Figurative language is part of the semantic aspect in language that employs various figures in a language. The study discussed an analysis of the figurative languages in the Selena Gomez song. The study aimed at finding out the kind and the meaning of figurative languages in her song “Lose You to Love Me”. The source of the data was taken from the lyrics of Selena Gomez’s song. Her song was classified as a pop song released on 23rd October 2019. In this analysis, the descriptive qualitative model was used with a pure structuralism approach, such as hyperbole, irony, paradox, personification, repetition, and simile. Then the types of figurative language were classified and analyzed. The result showed that six kinds of figurative languages were found: hyperbole 33.3%, Irony 11.1%, paradox 22.3%, personification 11.1%, repetition 11.1%, and simile 11.1%. The figurative language dominant is hyperbole since song lyrics are distorted by adding original meanings to explicit words. Instead, song lyrics contain a comparative meaning between denotative interpretation and connotative meaning. In addition, this song provides the essence of the song on aesthetic principles and colors.

AbstractThis research is entitled An Analysis of Figurative Language in Taylor Swift's song lyrics it aims to know the types of figurative language that are used in Taylor swift lyrics and describe the contextual meaning of the figurative language used in Taylor's lyrics. The research data is obtained from two songs from one albumof Taylor Swift. The album titled Red with three songs taken entitles Red and 22. This research uses descriptive qualitative method in observation and library research in collecting data of this research. Figurative language found consists of simile, metaphor, hyperbole, paradox, irony and personification. In this research, these findingsshow that hyperbole is the most dominant in Taylor Swift’s song and based on the contextual meaning of overall song lyrics of Taylor Swift tell about conflict, pain heart and deeply treachery.Keywords: song, lyric, figurative language, contextual meaning

The objectives of this study are: 1) to find out the meaning of metaphorical symbols in Linkin Park’s song lyrics; 2) to find out the contribution of Linkin Park’s song lyrics to teaching poetry. In this study, the writer applies the descriptive qualitative approach in this study to analyze implicit meaning of metaphorical symbols used in Linkin Park’s song lyrics. Besides that, the writer wants to describe its contribution to teaching poetry. The finding show that the writer found 38 metaphorical symbols in the five Linkin Park’s song lyric. It consists of 4 symbols in the Numb, 14 symbols in Hands Held High, 5 symbols in What I’ve done, 5 symbols in New Divide, 10 symbols in Final Masquerade. Through using those song lyrics, the students can learn the figurative languages which can be found in those song lyrics, especially metaphorical symbols. The students can understand the meaning of the metaphorical symbols which can enrich their vocabulary through learn the examples of implicit meaning analysis in this study. So they are able to choose and combine the appropriate dictions. Finally, they will be able to create a good poetry which has deep and beautiful meaning. The writer suggests that the teachers should use an appropriate and interesting learning source in teaching writing and appreciating poetry. Song lyrics in Linkin Park consist of a lot of words, phrases, and sentences with the figurative language, especially metaphorical symbols which has implicit and deep meaning. Through delivering those songs lyrics, the students will get the inspiration and motivation in writing and appreciating poetry.

The meaning is the meaning or intent of a wordthat summed. Values mean something that has a quality angle,song is a composition of the tone or voice. The researchmethod used is descriptive qualitative. This research wasconducted in Humbang Hasundutan and research was startedin December 2015 to February 2016. The study populationwas not there. While the sample is Haholongi Song Ma SidoliDompak Sinaga work as much as one song and DompakSinaga. The results of this study indicate that the meaning ofthe song lyric Haholongi Ma Sidoli were lovers who are notdestined for a brotherly relationship (match). The values onthe song lyric Haholongi Ma Sidoli is: enjoyment value, thevalue of patience, the value of love, psychiatric tilapia, thevalue of life.

Language is a tool of communication used by people anywhere and every time. Now days people commonly find a figurative language in daily life, for example in a lyric of song. Figurative language is a way to express an idea in implicit way. This research is trying to analyze the figurative languages which exist in the lyric of song “A Whole New World” and trying to find out its meaning by analyzing its contextual meaning. This is a descriptive qualitative research. The data instrument is the song lyric which taken from Genius website. The result showed that this song consist of some figurative languages, such as alliteration, simile, personification, metaphor, and hyperbole. Furthermore, the most figurative language used in the lyric is metaphor. It is highly relatable with the imaginative theme of the song itself. The contextual meaning of each figurative language is also explained based on the situation of the lyric.

Individuals use language as a means of communication everywhere and at all times. In today's world, figurative language is often encountered in everyday life, such as in song lyrics. Figurative language is a way of describing something without saying it directly. This research aims to investigate the figurative languages found in the lyrics of the song "Grenade" by analyzing their context and attempting to decipher their meaning. The data tool is song lyrics found on the internet, and the research approach is descriptive qualitative analysis. The results revealed that this album employs figurative language such as metaphor, hyperbole, and repetition. Furthermore, the most figurative words used in the lyrics is hyperbole. This research aims to identify and classify; analytic, paradoxical, and synthetic sentences which are logical types of sentences in the song lyric of  ABC by The Jackson 5 and The Hard Way by The Kinks in order to get the virtue of meanings of the lyrics.  The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative by analyzing and comparing the data by using Kant’s containment concept. The data used in this research are lyrics from the songs ABC 5 and The Hard Way. The research findings obtained: one analytic sentence in ABC, one paradoxical sentence in The Hard Way and twenty two synthetic sentences in both lyrics. The data indicate that there are more synthetic sentences rather than analytical and paradoxical sentences in the songs. In conclusion, the synthetic sentences used on the song lyrics are more fabricated for the virtue of meanings on the song lyrics than analytic and paradoxical sentences. Therefore, the listeners can express their emotions freely by song lyrics using synthetic sentences.

Abstract This study is entitled Figurative Language in The Song Lyrics of 5 Seconds of Summer and One Direction’s Albums. This study is aimed to identify figurative language and explain the meaning of those types of figurative language found in the song lyrics of 5 Seconds of Summer’s album entitled “Sounds Good Feels Good” and One Direction’s album entitled “Midnight Memories”. The data were collected using the documentation research method. After the required data were collected, they were analyzed using qualitative method. The analysis of the data were presented in a descriptive way to give clear explanation. The findings show that in 5 Seconds of Summer’s album five types of figurative language found in the data; they are: personification, irony, simile, metaphor and hyperbole. While from One Direction’s album four types of figurative language were found; they are: personification, simile, metaphor and hyperbole. There were two types of meaning found in the data; they are: conceptual meaning and connotative meaning. It can be concluded that in the rock band’s album Sounds Good Feels Good irony was found; however, in pop band’s album Midnight Memories irony was not found. Both in those two albums conceptual meaning was more frequently used.

Figurative language can appear in various types and the meaning may not be determined by its components. This study aims to identify and analyze the meaning of figurative language found in the song lyrics “Passenger's album all the little lights”. There are two theories used in this study. The first is the theory of figurative language proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger, and the second is the theory of meaning by Leech as the supporting theory. The data in this study were directly taken from Passenger’s fourth album. The album consists of twelve songs. They were collected by documentation method and note taking technique. The collected data were analyzed  using qualitative and descriptive method. This study applied informal method to present the analysis. The result of this study shows that there are nine types of figurative language found in song lyrics. They were allusion, simile, metaphor, irony, personification, hyperbole, dead metaphor, metonymy, and paradox. Most of the figurative expressions found in those songs were similes. Four out of seven types of meaning used in those lyrics in order to understand the figurative meaning in the song lyrics; they were connotative meaning, conceptual meaning, affective meaning, and collocative meaning. All the songs which are analyzed have the main theme about life and love.

The research deals with figurative language, aimed to identify the types and interpret the ideas or messages implicitly or explicitly expressed with theoretical based proposed by Kennedy and Giola (2005) that figurative language is an expression of comparison that relies not on its literal meaning, but rather on its connotations. Figurative language is also commonly used in song lyrics and this is referred to as the object of the research, that is the song lyrics taken Evanescence’s album Anywhere but Home. This album consists of five songs:  Everybody’s Fool, Going under, Haunted, Taking over Me and Thoughtless. Qualitative content analysis as the use of replicable and valid method for making specific inferences from text to other states or properties of its source under Descriptive Qualitative Approach, pioneered by Krippendorff (2000) is applied here. The results show that Hyperbole, Repetition, Personification, Metaphor, Erotesis, Merism, referring to Kosasih’s category of figurative language are found in the song album with various meanings. Abstrak: Alih kode adalah gejala peralihan pemakaian bahasa karena berubahnya situasi, Campur kode dapat terjadi saat seorang penutur mencampur dua bahasa atau ragam bahasa tanpa ada situasi atau keadaan berbahasa yang menuntut percampuran tersebut. Alih kode dan campur kode tidak hanya terjadi dalam percakapan, namun juga terdapat dalam bentuk lagu. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan wujud alih kode dan campur kode dalam lirik lagu “yuna ito” pada album heart. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Analisis dilakukan dengan membaca dan memahami teks lirik lagu serta melakukan reduksi data dan mengklarifikasi data berupa wujud alih kode dan campur kode. Dalam penelitian ini ditemukan dua data yaitu data alih kode dan campur kode. Data alih kode yang ditemukan adalah wujud alih kode antar kalimat terdapat 9 data, wujud alih kode dalam kalimat terdapat 8 data, dan wujud alih kode tag sebanyak 2 data. Adapun wujud campur kode ditemukan data sebagai berikut, penyisipan unsur berwujud kata berupa 7 data, penyisipan unsur berwujud frasa sebanyak 10 data, penyisipan unsur berwujud klausa sebanyak 12 data, penyisipan unsur berwujud perulangan kata sebanyak 4 data, penyisipan unsur berwujud baster sebanyak 14 data.Kata kunci: Sosiolinguistik, Alih kode, Campur kode, Lirik lagu Abstract: Code switching is a symptom of language switching due to changing situations. Code mixing can occur when a speaker mixes two languages or varieties of languages without any situation or language condition that demands such mixing. Code switching and code mixing not only occur in conversation, but also in the form of songs. This study aims to describe the form of code switching and code mixing in the lyrics of the song "yuna ito" on the album heart. The research method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The analysis was carried out by reading and understanding the song lyric text as well as doing data reduction and clarifying the data in the form of code switching and code mixing. In this study, two data were found, namely code switching and code mixing data. The code transfer data found were the form of code switching between sentences, there were 9 data, the form of code switching in a sentence contained 8 data, and the form of code switching was 2 data. As for the form of code mixing, the data were found as follows, insertion of word elements in the form of 7 data, insertion of phrase tangible elements as much as 10 data, insertion of clause tangible elements as many as 12 data, insertion of word repetitive tangible elements as many as 4 data, insertion of baster tangible elements as many as 14 data.
