The article examines uncertainty as an integral part of the existence of supply chain in the VUCA-world, describes the uncertainties that affect supply chain. It is determined that for effective management it is important to distinguish between types of uncertainty: ignorance, uncertainty and risk, their essence and features of manifestation are considered. In the case of pandemic challenges, the levels of threats and risks become more complicated and increase, which makes the process of making adequate management decisions difficult, can lead to negative consequences of the functioning of supply chain. Uncertainty factors that need to be constantly taken into account in ensuring the viability and efficiency of supply chain are analyzed. In addition, the factors that can significantly affect the number of "failures" in the system - force majeure, natural disasters, political, financial crises, terrorism, piracy, various emergencies. It is established that the effectiveness of management decisions to increase the stability of supply chain will depend on activities to minimize the impact of subjectivity and objectivity of uncertainty of both internal and external environment, types of uncertainty and system elements that will shape the reliability and stability of supply chains. Under such conditions, managers will be able to make decisions that will maintain the required level of flexibility and adaptability of the system. In order to find ways to increase the level of reliability and stability of supply chains in difficult pandemic conditions, elements of stability are established, it is proposed to consider the reliability of supply chain through the probability of "failure" of the system within different components of supply chain infrastructure and flow processes. To meet the requirements of VUCA-world supply chain needs to use innovative approaches, diversity, build transparent information flows through trust throughout the supply chain, build an effective corporate culture that will include emotional resilience to constant challenges, social responsibility, continuous training and retraining, courage in making non-standard decisions.

In the packaging industry, disruptions occurring in the supply chain can impact all the segments and have huge consequences on the operations conducted by the distributors. We are witnesses of an unprecedented crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. It has influenced all layers of the society and forced us to make changes and adjustments to our every-day routine, regulations, economy. Disruptions can undermine the stability of the supply chain, causing business losses. Therefore, identifying the impact of different disruptions on the supply chain is crucial. Here, a timely and quick reaction is of great importance. The current pandemic has caused many disruptions in the industry and has impacted all parts of the supply chains in ways that have not been yet recorded, therefore making it even harder for the companies to respond to new challenges. The changes have not skipped the packaging industry, forcing the manufacturers to rethink their strategies and the consumers to change their views of a safe and reliable product. With the economic expansion, the demand for flexible packaging and has been growing. There are many advantages to flexible packaging. Besides the fact that it creates less environmental impact, it also requires fewer resources compared to traditional packaging production. Disruptions in the supply chains of the flexible packaging industry are one of the major economic concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic, and therefore the topic of this paper. Since the companies in the industry are in desperate need for a new approach regarding risk management and building business resilience, some strategies for overcoming the challenges of the crisis on the flexible packaging market have been presented here.

The constraints imposed by the pandemic COVID-19 increased the risks of the disruption of supply chains, bringing new challenges to companies. These effects were felt more intensely in less-developed countries, which are highly dependent on imports of products and raw materials. This study aims to assess the impact of supply chain resilience in a less-developed country (Guinea-Bissau) using complex adaptive system theory. We used a qualitative methodology through multiple case studies. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with four companies. The semi-structured script contains questions about supply chain disruptions, vulnerabilities and resilience. The main results show that the companies in Guinea-Bissau, due to their dependence on the outside world and the absence of formal, larger and more diversified supply chains, suffered serious consequences with the disruption imposed by the pandemic. It was also concluded that the more resilient the supply chain, the fewer the impacts of crisis events and that the resilience of companies at this level depends on their obtaining competitive advantages over their competitors. The main practical implications of this study are the need to formalize the supply chain, diversify the supply of services and products of companies dependent on the exterior, adopt metrics that allow for the early detection of situations of supply chain disruption, effectively manage stocks and promote proactive crisis resolution strategies. Studies on the impact of resilience on supply chains in crises are scarce, especially on companies located in underdeveloped countries.

Health crises have an impact on supply chains, mainly by disrupting their regular activities. In this research, the authors have analyzed the impact that the Covid-19 pandemic has made on business relationships between supply chain partners in the automotive industry and their suppliers, which are mostly from territories where the initial outbreak of the SARS COV 2 virus occurred. The analysis shows that in some cases, there is a strong dependency between the pandemic and production levels. Being dependent prevents supply chains from maintaining stability and causes system vulnerabilities. The authors conclude their work with a thesis on the pronounced impact of the current pandemic on automotive supply chain activities. For the analysis to be complete, it is necessary to monitor changes in production levels further, since data for the current year still does not provide a realistic insight into all the consequences at the supply chain level.

PurposeThis study explores the countermeasures taken by retailers to mitigate the effects of COVID-19 on supply chain disruptions.Design/methodology/approachThis research uses a multiple case study approach and undertakes 36 semi-structured interviews with senior management of the four largest retailers of the United Arab Emirates. The respondents were designated at different positions such as Vice President, Director and Project Manager.FindingsResults reveal that retailers are employing six countermeasures to mitigate the effects of COVID-19 on supply chains. Particularly, retailers are securing required demand, preserving cash flows, redirecting inventory, adding capacity to their distribution centres, becoming more flexible with their direct or third-party logistics provider and finally widening delivery options for their suppliers to mitigate the impact of COVID-19.Research limitations/implicationsThis study has some limitations. First, the results of this study cannot be generalized to a broader population as it attempts to build an initial theory. Second, this study uses a cross-sectional approach to explore the countermeasures employed by retailing firms to mitigate the effects of COVID-19.Originality/valueA notable weakness in a supply chain disruption literature is an unfulfilled need for research examining the strategies employed by retailers to respond to/address the challenges posed by COVID-19. Our study fills this gap.

Purpose Information security is an essential element in all business activities. The damage to businesses from information security breaches has become pervasive. The scope of information security has widened as information has become a critical supply chain asset, making it more important to protect the organization’s data. Today’s global supply chains rely upon the speedy and robust dissemination of information among supply chain partners. Hence, processing of accurate supply chain information is quintessential to ensure the robustness and performance of supply chains. An effective information security management (ISM) is deemed to ensure the robustness of supply chains. The purpose of the paper is to examine the impact of information security initiatives on supply chain robustness and performance. Design/methodology/approach Based on extant literature, a research model was developed and validated using a questionnaire survey instrument administered among information systems/information technology managers. Data collected were analyzed using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Further, to test the hypotheses and to fit the theoretical model, Structural equation modeling techniques were used. Findings Results of this study indicated that information security initiatives are positively associated with supply chain robustness and performance. These initiatives are likely to enhance the robustness and performance of the supply chains. Originality/value With the advancements in internet technologies and capabilities as well as considering the dynamic environment of supply chains, this study is relevant in terms of the capability that an organization needs to acquire with regards to ISM. Benefiting from the resource dependency theory, information security initiatives could be considered as a critical resource having an influence on the internal and external environment of supply chains.

As the domestic businesses expand, many are making the choice to use foreign products, labor, and services to aid in their production. Global supply chains are minimizing the costs of the production process but are also creating vulnerabilities to home countries. As the global economy changes, the competitiveness between countries grows. Competitiveness can affect everything from a country’s economy to how a firm conducts international business. Addressing the need to find a method to increase the United States competitiveness in the world economy by improving the use of global supply chains would help to make domestic firms more successful in the global economy. Studying how companies position themselves abroad is important to providing insight into how to become more competitive. Worldwide companies are diversifying by moving more of their supply chain to international locations. This is providing them with many benefits such as better markets for products, lower costs, and more advanced technologies. As a result, the competitive strategy of companies is to increase production and decrease costs through the most efficient global supply chain. Maximizing the potential of domestic firms’ global supply chains is one of the most effective ways to increase U.S. competitiveness. If more big businesses in the United States are willing to participate on the global level, then the US will be able to improve their competitiveness.

Today, mobile IoT (m-IoT) connectivity is one of the significant enablers of Supply Chain 4.0 with its capabilities of secure connectivity over large areas at low cost and with low device complexity. The purpose of this chapter is to shed light on the evolution of m-IoT paradigm within context of supply chain management. The potential of LTE, 4G, and future 5G technologies and the impact of m-IoT enabling technologies, LTE-M, and NB-IoT on digital transformation of SCM are investigated through commercial deployments; current status and future directions are discussed in terms of supply chain efficiency and supply chain visibility. Accordingly, this chapter first outlines the technical architecture and features of NB-IoT and LTE-M technologies and then explores how m-IoT connectivity is creating value for supply chains through commercial deployment examples. Exploration of m-IoT potential on supply chain operations will ensure new insights and opportunities for further advancement and evolution of IoT paradigm as a means of productivity.

As the practices of offshoring and outsourcing force the supply chain networks to keep on expanding geographically in the globalised environment, the logistics processes are becoming more exposed to risk and disruptions. Thus, modern supply chains seem to be more vulnerable than ever. It is clear that efficient logistics risk and security management emerges as an issue of pivotal importance in such competitive, demanding and stochastic environment and is thus vital for the viability and profitability of a company. In this context, this chapter focuses on a set of stochastic quantitative models that study the impact of one or more supply chain disruptions on optimal determination of single period inventory control policies. The purpose of this research is to provide a critical review of state-of-the-art methodologies to be used as a starting point for further research efforts.

PurposeInformation distortion results in demand variance amplification in upstream supply chain members, known as the bullwhip effect, and inventory inaccuracy in the inventory records. As inventory inaccuracy contributes to the bullwhip effect, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of inventory inaccuracy on the bullwhip effect in radio-frequency identification (RFID)-enabled supply chains and, in this context, to evaluate supply chain performance because of the RFID technology.Design/methodology/approachA simulation modeling method based on hierarchical timed colored petri nets is presented to model inventory management in multi-stage serial supply chains subject to inventory inaccuracy for various traditional and information sharing configurations in the presence and absence of RFID. Validation of the method is done by comparing results obtained for the bullwhip effect with published literature results.FindingsThe bullwhip effect is increased in RFID-enabled multi-stage serial supply chains subject to inventory inaccuracy. The information sharing supply chain is more sensitive to the impact of inventory inaccuracy.Research limitations/implicationsInformation sharing involves collaboration in market demand and inventory inaccuracy, whereas RFID is implemented by all echelons. To obtain the full benefits of RFID adoption and collaboration, different collaboration strategies should be investigated.Originality/valueColored petri nets simulation modeling of the inventory management process is a novel approach to study supply chain dynamics. In the context of inventory errors, information on RFID impact on the dynamic behavior of multi-stage serial supply chains is provided.
