Purpose: The purpose of this study was to review the evidence for addressing emotional resilience in the training of graduate students in communication sciences and disorders (CSD). As helping professionals, speech-language pathologists and audiologists face unique emotional challenges that can lead to burnout, compassion fatigue, and eventually possible career changes. At the same time, we also know that graduate students across the country, in all disciplines, are in the throes of a mental health crisis. Graduate students in CSD are, therefore, in need of targeted instruction on how to foster emotional resilience both to manage the stressors of graduate school and to ensure professional wellness and career longevity. Conclusions: While there is currently limited research evidence on how to effectively target emotional resilience for graduate students in CSD, existing research and guidance from studies in CSD and other helping professions can provide a framework to follow. The recent mental health challenges facing our nation, and graduate students more specifically, should be seen as both a call to action and an opportunity to elevate the depth of training provided beyond core knowledge and skills to include education on wellness, self-care, and emotional resilience to develop career-long habits.

Different elements in education should be taken into account in the development of education which affects learners' success. Educators are one of the main elements of any educational program, primarily in mainstream education, and there is considerable research recognizing this and the fact that educators have a significant effect on learners' success. Therefore, education can be enhanced simply by enhancing educators' effectiveness. Moreover, because of the importance of educators' factors, many researchers have emphasized educator attributes over the last 20 years. In an attempt to better explain the interaction between educator-related concepts in the setting of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), educator self-efficacy has a significant impact on the educators' everyday lives as well as on their learners and is regarded as an important factor in successful education and instruction. Furthermore, as one of the characteristics, teacher resilience is a multifaceted and developmental concept that has newly captured the interest of some scholars, specifically in the last 20 years, allowing educators not only to face difficult situations to survive but also to recover and prosper. To this end, the current review tries to emphasize these two significant factors in regulating learners' success. Corresponding to this review, some suggestions for further research are provided and pedagogical implications are proposed.

It is no secret that education systems across the country are experiencing a dramatic teacher shortage and that burnout and turnover rates for educational professionals is at an all-time high. In addition to every state suffering from a teacher shortage, teacher preparation programs have also seen critical decline in enrollment. Currently in the United States, teacher retention rates are extremely low nationally, with only 50% of new teachers remaining in classrooms after five years. While there are many external factors such as low starting salaries, lack of adequate resources, and negative working conditions that contribute to teacher mobility or people leaving the profession altogether. This chapter explores how fostering emotional resilience in novice educators can help to increase skilled coping strategies when faced with challenging situations, enhance career satisfaction, and translate into greater teacher retention.

Objectives: Many orphaned children in low- and middle-income countries live with family. Yet, their household composition and its stability are not well-characterized, nor is impact of stability on longer-term outcomes.Methods: We used the longitudinal, multi-country Positive Outcomes for Orphans cohort to describe adult family living with orphans. Stability was measured by changes in presence of six familial relations over time, and related to three outcomes: 1) incident abuse, 2) cognitive functioning, 3) emotional difficulties. Associations were estimated using generalized linear models fit with generalized estimating equations. For abuse, Poisson regression estimated risk ratios. For continuous scores of cognitive functioning and emotional difficulties, linear models estimated mean differences (MDs) with 95% confidence intervals.Results: Among 1,359 orphans, 53–61% reported living with their mother each year; 7–13% with father; nearly 60% reported ≥1 change in composition over follow-up. Compared to 0 changes, difficulties increased with 1 change [MD: 0.23 (−0.33, 0.79)], 2 changes [MD: 0.57 (0.00, 1.16)] and ≥3 changes [MD: 0.73 (0.18, 1.29)]. No associations were found with abuse or cognitive functioning.Conclusion: Orphan well-being may be improved through supports stabilizing household composition or targeting emotional resilience.

Faced with the SARS-CoV-2pandemic, we decided to investigate if recovery from this large exogenous global shock depended on both emotional and economic recovery. We piloted a survey from May 2020 – August 2020 to examine how exposure to this global pandemic shaped economic outlook, and we documented the innate emotional styles of respondents. We then sought to answer two questions. Do the emotional style dimensions have anything to do with economic recovery? And are wages and emotional dimensions associated with economic outlook? With these questions in mind, we estimated two structural equation models. We jointly estimated all six emotional dimensions for the first question and assessed their impact on economic outlook. We estimated a structural model with a Mincer-wage equation and emotional outlook, resilience, and attention equations for the second question. We found that emotional outlook was positively and significantly correlated with economic outlook. We also found that wages, emotional- outlook, resilience, and attention were correlated with returning to behavior-normal, meaning once the public health crisis abates, fear will cease to restrict mobility in all sectors. We found pessimism over returning to business-normal, patronizing businesses that are significantly affected by the pandemic could have a dampening effect on economic recovery. However, this could be offset by the positive correlations between emotional outlook on economic outlook and returning to behavior-normal, both of which could boost economic recovery. From a public policy standpoint fostering a positive emotional outlook and encouraging emotional resilience could be the mojo needed for faster economic recovery.

ObjectivesWe aimed to ascertain the prevalence of perceived loneliness among older adults following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and to examine factors contributing to the perception of loneliness.DesignCross-sectional and longitudinal data from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study cohort.SettingThe ARIC Study cohort, a prospective cohort that recruited (1987–1989) participants from four distinct communities in the USA.Participants2984 ARIC cohort members.Primary and secondary outcomesPerceived loneliness assessed using the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) UCLA three-item Loneliness Scale telephone interviews conducted May–October 2020 and prior to March 2020.ResultsOf the total 5037 participants alive in 2020, 2984 (56.2%) responded to the UCLA three-item questionnaire (mean age 82.6 (SD 4.6) years, 586 (19.6%) black participants, 1081 (36.2%) men), of which 66 (2.2%) reported having had a COVID-19 infection during the observation period. The proportion of participants reporting feeling lonely was 56.3% (n=1680). Among participants with repeat measures of loneliness (n=516), 35.2% (n=182) reported feeling more lonely following pandemic onset. Self-rated health and emotional resilience were strongly associated with self-perceived loneliness. The burden of COVID-19 infections, concern about the pandemic and decreased self-reported physical activity were greater among black as compared with white participants and among those with an educational attainment of less than high school as compared with high school or more.ConclusionFindings from this study document the increase in perceived loneliness among older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic in the USA.

The present article focuses on highlighting the theoretical aspects of the topic and the interest shown towards the novelty and infl uence of these concepts – emotional hearing, emotional retrieval and emotional sensitivity, taking into account the peculiarities of each. The psychological research of many scholars have shown that appropriate perception of the emotional state of the speaker’s voice is an important component of man’s relationship with the world around him. The greater the lability of the emotional system, the higher the relationship of emotional hearing with emotional retrieval and emotional sensitivity, and the understanding that they are dependent on emotional susceptibility, which occurs in the forms of emotional reaction, emotional rigidity, and emotional resilience, which depend on the person’s interests, beliefs, goals, relationships, spiritual will.

(1) Background: Self-esteem plays an important role in developing emotional resilience and wellbeing in children. Yet, there has been little related research on Cognitive Behavioral Group Therapy on this topic. Our aims were to assess the effect of the Child Self-Esteem CBT (CSE-CBT) protocol on children’s self-esteem in grades five and six; to assess the effect of the CSE-CBT protocol on the therapeutic process; and to explore the feasibility of delivering the CSE-CBT protocol in a school setting. (2) Methods: Eighty elementary school children in grades five and six, divided into four intervention and four control groups, attended 12 structured sessions using the CSE-CBT protocol, led by specially trained teachers. The children completed questionnaires to assess their self-esteem at the beginning and at the end of the study, and answered weekly questionnaires that assessed therapeutic process. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to analyze the data. (3) Results: The CSE-CBT protocol had a significant effect on improving children’s self-esteem over the course of the study, regardless of the children’s working alliance with the teacher leading the group. (4) Conclusions: The findings suggest that the CSE-CBT protocol has the potential to benefit children’s self-esteem and indicate that school teachers can be trained to administer the CBT-protocol.

Well-behaved children might seem well, but may actually harbor self-doubt, a strong sense of guilt, and a weak ego identity which will bring them problems emotionally and socially in their later life. This creative work, Golden, was created to raise a discussion on this issue by trying to answer how children may end up developing these traits, what the effects are, and how to recover. To answer this, Erik Erikson’s 8 stages of psychosocial development is used as the base for this coming-of-age drama musical screenplay. It follows the story of an obedient daughter, Annisa. Connected with the theory, Annisa ended with the dystonic “guilt” in the play age stage because of how her mother raised her. Thus, in adolescent stage she lacks emotional resilience in an initiative-based environment.
