A liquid suspension consisting of a mixture of H2O, D2O, and polystyrene latex microspheres was used to study the effects of multiple scattering on the near-infrared (800–1600 nm) spectrum of a pure absorber (H2O) in a turbid medium. This simple experimental model enabled us to isolate and explain the spectral distortions introduced by variations in the optical pathlength of scattered photons. We observe the following: (1) Reflectance spectra measured with the detector positioned close to and far from the point of illumination have distinctly different sensitivities to background scattering variations. Within a certain range of detector positions, the use of spectral derivatives to correct for multiplicative scattering effects is most effective. (2) The wavelength dependence of the scattering background of the log(1/ R) spectrum depends not only on particle size but also on the separation between the source and detector probes. And (3) the ratio of the magnitudes of the spectral peaks caused by absorption within the background medium and absorption within the scattering particles decreases as multiple scattering increases. We explain these observations in the context of photon-diffusion theory and point out their significance with respect to the design of diffuse-reflectance spectrometers. Photon diffusion theory proves to be valuable for interpretation of diffuse spectra, but it fails to account for spectral distortions introduced by low-order backscattering at close source–detector separations.

Abstract The article presents the developed methods for diagnosing and analysing signals from injection systems of marine engines. As a source signal, the authors use elastic waves of acoustic emission. The essential fact in the case here considered is that the high frequency of signal from working elements of the injection system comes from a close source directly related to the change of the working parameters of the element (system). Characteristically for elastic waves of acoustic emission, low frequencies (e.g. those from other sources, such as machines in the engine room) are in this case attenuated. Therefore, the proper selection of the method for the analysis allows us accurately diagnose the injection system of a working engine.

The description of the inhomogeneity of the cosmic ray spectrum in the region of 10 TV, which is observed in experimental data, in terms of isotropic diffusion from a single close source is considered. It is shown that such a description is possible, and the area of possible localization of the source in space and time and its energy are found. The method of penalty functions is used to account for the data on the spectrum of all particles.

To chapter concerns emerging cybernetics, which is the school of “meaning to lead” and is particularly associated with the idea of dominations and controls. This chapter initially anatomizes the sociology of software cybernetics into two broad movements—free/libre and open source software (FLOSS) and proprietary close source software (PCSS)—to argue a good software governance approach. This chapter discusses (a) in what matters and (b) for what reasons software governance of Turkey has locked into the ecosystems of PCSS and, in particular, considers causes, effects, and potential outcomes of not utilizing FLOSS in the state of Turkey. The government has continuously stated that there are no compulsory national or international conventions(s) and settlement(s) with the ecosystems of PCSS and that there is no vendor lock-in concern. Nevertheless, the chapter principally argues that Turkey has taken a pragmatic decision-making process of software in the emerging cybernetics that leads and contributes to techno-social externality of PCSS hegemonic stability.

A system with property-close source-separation of thirteen different solid household waste fractions in a residential area in southern Sweden, including the implementation of new systems for source-separation of food waste, waste electric and electronic equipment, hazardous waste and fat, oils and grease was monitored over a 2-year period. Continuous weighing of disposed waste and repeated waste composting analyses were used to investigate recycling behaviour of households in the area and to monitor the composition of disposed waste. Results show that 34% of the total amount of generated waste was currently diverted to material recycling. The removal of recyclables from residual waste could be significantly increased, as more than 80% of all waste in the area (bulky waste excluded) was either covered by the Producer Responsibility Ordinances on packaging and newspaper or constitutes food waste suitable for biogas production. Food waste still represented almost 30% of all residual waste in the study area and was thus the fraction with the greatest potential (on weight basis) for increased source-separation.
