The present paper is based on a field research on the evolution of a saga of family entrepreneurs in Spain, with four generations involved. From the modest beginnings of a canned tomato factory, longer than a century ago, the case explains its transformation up to the current reality of being recognized as the largest blackberry European producer, named ‘Agrícola El Bosque’. Through the personal experience of its main characters, the case displays the very different stages through which this entrepreneurial family has traveled, especially the keys to the successful development of ‘Agrícola El Bosque’, including the last major project that has promoted, based on a process of cooperation with other berries producers in the area. This commercial alliance, branded as 'Plus Berries', leads us to reflect on the future of the growth model followed until now by this family business. On the foundations of this case, some lessons can be extracted and shed light on particular aspects of the scientific literature on family business management, as well as on how entrepreneurial spirit can be fed and flourish at the heat of the development and consolidation of a cluster of companies in an industry.

The sale of a family business often gives rise to emotions that can still haunt families years after the sale. However, some families—serial business families—combine generations of experience and succeed in turning it into a positive experience by re-creating a new family business venture. The objectives of this research are to demonstrate that serial business families constitute a global phenomenon and to identify patterns in how and why they re-create businesses. The compilation and analysis of in-depth interviews with nine serial business families from around the world show that they follow a three-stage process and that the original business, in terms of family, ownership, business, and governance, has a strong influence on what is re-created and how it is re-created. The fresh motivation and the strong commitment of serial business families, combined with renewed entrepreneurial spirit, could serve as an inspiration for all families in business to reconsider their strategic agendas in the context of the new economy.

Intensive manual labor enterprises in the developed world face challenges competing with products imported from countries where manufacturing costs are low. This reduces the volume of domestic production and leads to rapid loss of knowledge and experience in production processes. This study focuses on the Israeli footwear industry as a case study. Qualitative methodologies were applied, including in-depth interviews and field observations. A literature review on previous research, and contemporary trends was conducted. The field research examines challenges along the value chain in small factories. It finds that mass production paradigms impose a decentralized process between designers and manufacturers and therefore do not leverage local potential into a sustainable competitive advantage for small factories. The proposed solution is a digital and technological platform for small manufacturing plants. The platform mediates and designs the connections between production, technology, and design and enables the creation of a joint R&D system.
