Background: Vitamin and mineral supplementation is common practice in both human and animal health, But indiscriminate, overdose and long term used may cause toxicity. The research work was designed to evaluate the effect of iron (Fe) &vitamin B12 (Vit-B12) on body weight, hematological parameters: Total Erythrocyte Count (TEC), Hemoglobin (Hb) and Total Leukocyte Count (TLC), and biochemical parameters: serum creatinine (SC), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels in mice. Methods: One-month old 20 female Swiss Albino mice (Rattus norvegicus) having 19.52±0.54 g body weight were divided into four equal groups (n=5). After acclimatization, the mice of group A was treated with Fe@ 0.2 mg/kg body weight (bwt) in pellet, group B was treated with Vit-B12 @ 5 mg/kg bwt, group C was treated with combination of Fe and Vit-B12 and group D was fed with standard pellet and was considered as control. Results: The result showed significant (P<0.05) increase in body weight of treatment groups compared to the control group. The values of TEC, Hb and TLC in the treated groups were increased significantly (P<0.05). ALT, AST and SC values were decreased significantly (P<0.05) in the treated groups compared to the control group. Conclusions: It is concluded that administration of Fe and Vit-B12 significantly (P<0.05) increased body weight and hematological (TEC, Hb, and TLC) parameters however biochemical parameters (ALT and AST) were decreased significantly (P<0.05). In addition, combination of Fe&Vit-B12 showed better effects compared to their single uses.

Background: Ciprofloxacin is a common and widely used antibiotic in both human and animal health, But indiscriminate, overdose and long term used may cause toxicity The research work was designed to examine the changes in hematological parameters: Total Erythrocyte count (TEC), Hemoglobin (Hb), Total Leukocyte Count (TLC) and Differential Leukocyte Count (DLC) and biochemical parameters: Total Cholesterol (T), Triglyceride (TG), High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) and Serum Creatinine (SC) in mice treated with ciprofloxacin and its interaction with vitamin C. Methods: A total of 20 male Swiss Albino mice aging one month and weighing of 22.5±2.3 gm were taken, and were allotted into four equal groups (n=5). After acclimatization, Group D was kept as control and was fed with normal mice pellet and water only. Mice of group A, B, and C were maintained as treatment groups and fed with ciprofloxacin (Ciprocin® )@ 2 mg/kg body weight (bwt), 1 mg/kg bwt and 0.5 mg/kg bwt in normal saline orally respectively throughout the experimental period of 14 days. Besides 2 mg Vitamin C @ 2mg /kg bwt was supplied in water for all the treated mice. Results: The results indicated that the values of RBC and Hb in the treated groups were decreased significantly (P<0.01) as compared to the control group. White blood cell (WBC) counts in group B and C were almost similar to those of control group, whereas it was lowered significantly (P<0.05) in group A. However, lymphocyte, monocyte levels significantly (P<0.01) increased in all the treated groups as compared to the control, whereas neutrophil and eosinophil counts in group B and C were lowered (P<0.01) as compared to the control. The TG values were recorded as lower (P<0.01) in group C than in group A. Cholesterol level was found highest (P<0.01) in control mice (group D) as compared to treated groups A, B and C. HDL was decreased and SC was increased significantly (P<0.01) in the treated groups as compared to the control group. Conclusions: It could be concluded that treatment mice with vitamin C concomitantly with ciprofloxacin not exert restoring effect significantly on hematological parameters of TEC and Hb but exert effect significantly on total WBC count, lymphocyte, monocyte and lipid profile.

<p>The effects of Oxyclozanide (Tremacid®) on some clinical (body weight) and haematological parameters (TEC, Hb, PCV, ESR and TLC) were determined in this study. Among 55 cattle, 10 were selected, which were suffering from fascioliasis and divided randomly into two groups. Each group was consisting of five cattle. One was treated with Tremacid® @ (15 mg/kg body weight). Other was kept as an infected control group. Before trials with Tremacid® initial body weight, EPG of liver fluke and hematological parameters were examined. During the experimental period the faecal samples, clinical and hematological parameters were examined on 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th days for the determination of effects of Tremacid®. A significant reduction of EPG count was found on 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th day of Tremacid® (61.87%, 71.22%, 76.98% and 84.53%) in a treated cattle group. The EPG of an untreated control group was significantly (p&lt;0.01) increased about 3.97%, 7.64%, 11.04% and 64.89% respectively. Total TEC was increased after treatment with Tremacid® and decreased in an untreated control group significantly (p&lt;0.01), Likewise, after treatment with Tremacid® Hb content and PCV were increased, and ESR was decreased. Total leukocyte count (TLC) was decreased and the body weight was increased after Tremacid® treatment in the group A. On the other hand, Hb content PCV and body weight was decreased significantly (p&lt;0.01) in the group B.</p>

The present research work was undertaken to study the effect of multi enzymes and vitamin AD3E on body weight and hematological parameter (TEC, Hb Concentration and ESR) in growing broilers fed with enzyme and vitamin AD3E with normal broiler ration. 20 broiler chickens of 10 (ten) days old “Hubbard Classic” were taken for study. The chicks were divided randomly into four groups with five chicks in each group. Group A designated as control group and was given normal broiler ration and rest of the groups were given enzyme and vitamin preparation. Group B was given enzyme only, group C was given vitamin only and group D was given both enzyme and vitamin as per schedule. It was observed that enzyme and vitamin AD3E preparation enhanced the growth rate of broilers. On the final day of experiment the body weight was significantly increased (P<0.01) in the treated groups in comparison to that of control group, TEC, Hb concentration and ESR values were significantly (P<0.01) increased in all treated  groups than the control group and among the treated groups vitamin AD3E showed lowest performance.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/pa.v22i1-2.16471 Progress. The effect of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum, Linn., @100mg/kg bwt.), jute (Corchorus capsularis, Linn., @100 mg/kg bwt.) and Levavet® (levamisole, @ 7.5 mg/kg bwt.) against natural gastrointestinal nematodes were studied in cattle. Their effect on hematological parameters (TEC, Hb, PCV and TLC), biochemical parameters (ALT and AST) and clinical parameter (body weight) were also observed. Twenty four (24) naturally parasitized cattle of BAU Dairy Farm, Mymensingh were randomly divided into four groups, each consisting of six (6) cattle. Water extract of leaves of tobacco and jute were administered orally to the cattle of group A and B, respectively. Cattle of group C were treated with Levavet® orally. Cattle of group D was kept as infected control group. Fecal samples, body weight, hematological and biochemical parameters were examined before treatment and on 3rd, 10th, 17th and 28th day. A significant (p<0.01) reduction of EPG count was found following administration of tobacco (34.32-51.26%), jute (8.80-27.76%) and Levavet®(89.31-100%) in cattle. The EPG count of the control group (D) were significantly (p<0.01) increased up to the last day of experimental period. After treatment with tobacco, jute and Levavet®, total erythrocyte count (TEC), hemoglobin (Hb) content and packed cell volume (PCV) were gradually increased significantly (p<0.01 and p<0.05) in cattle. Conversely, the total leukocyte count (TLC) were decreased significantly (p<0.01 and p<0.05) in treated cattle. The alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) level were not significantly changed in the cattle. The body weight was increased significantly (p<0.01 and p<0.05) in tobacco, jute and Levavet® treated cattle whereas decreased in control group. It is found that water extracts of tobacco leaves were moderately effective and jute leaves were relatively less effective against mixed gastrointestinal nematode infections in cattle.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/pa.v19i1.17108 Progress. The present study was undertaken to find out the efficacy of vitamin E and/or vitamin C against mercury (Hg) induced toxicity in mice. Sixty mice were randomly divided into 5 equal groups (n=12). One group of mice (Group A) was kept as control and each of rest four groups (B, C, D and E) were fed with mercuric chloride (HgCl2) in drinking water @ 65 mg/L. In addition to HgCl2 alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) @ 100 mg/L, ascorbic acid (vitamin C) @ 250 mg/L and combination of vitamin E and vitamin C at same dose were given to the mice of groups C, D and E respectively. All treatments were continued for 28 consecutive days. Four mice of each group were sacrificed on day 1, 14 and 28 and efficacy of vitamin E and vitamin C against Hg induced toxicity were evaluated by observing toxic signs, body weight, hemato-biochemical parameters and postmortem lesions. Mild (++) toxic signs as evident by reduced feed and water intake, salivation, vomiting, excitement, muscle tremor, ataxia, restlessness, incordination and ruffled hair coat were observed from 2nd week (group B) and from 3rd week (group C and D) by intoxication with HgCl2. Significant (P<0.01) reduction of body weight (18.38%) and hematological parameters i.e. TEC (19.88%), TLC (27.89%), Hb content (34.09%) and PCV (9.15%) were observed at day 28 in HgCl2 induced intoxicated mice (group B). At identical period in same group biochemical parameters i.e. AST (46.99%) and ALT (58.72%) increased significantly (p<0.01). Pinpoint hemorrhages throughout the liver and highly (++++) congested kidney was also observed at post mortem (group B). All the parameters i.e. toxic signs, body weight, hemato-biochemical and post mortem lesions were found to be slight (+) or mild (++) and/or improved in rest three groups of mice following treatment with vitamin E, vitamin C and combination of vitamin E and vitamin C. The present study reveals that vitamin E and C have a protective role against Hg poisoning. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of ivermectin, levamisole HCl and albendazole against gastrointestinal nematodes in naturally infected goats of government goat development farm, Sylhet, Bangladesh. The study included 52 black Bengal breed of which 30 were naturally infected and randomly selected 20 on the basis of their weight and egg count. Twenty black Bengal goats of 12-13 month old irrespective of sex infested with gastrointestinal nematodes were selected for this experiment and randomly divided into four equal groups (group A, B, C and D) where each group consisted of 5 goats and goats of group D were kept as control group. One injectable ivermectin (200?gkg-1 body weight, S/C) preparations (Techno Drugs Ltd. Bangladesh) and two solid levamisole HCl, albendazole (7.5 mgkg-1 body weight, orally) preparations (The ACME Laboratories Ltd. and Square Pharmaceuticals Ltd. Bangladesh) were used for positive control of gastrointestinal nematodes as group A, B and C. Goats of group D was kept as control without giving any treatment. Before trials (day 0), total egg count, blood samples and initial body weight were recorded. During the study period the fecal and blood samples were collected directly from rectum and examined on 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th day using McMaster fecal egg counting method. Body weight was recorded on day 28 following the treatments. The results of the comparative efficacies of different anthelmintic of ivermectin was 86.75%, followed by levamisole HCl 85.07% and albendazole 92.81%. McMaster fecal egg counting method discloses the percentage of Haemonchus spp. (15.38%), with Trichostrongylus spp, Strongyloides spp., and Cooperia spp. also present. After treatment with ivermectin, levamisole HCl and albendazole, Total Erythrocyte Count (TEC), Hemoglobin (Hb) content and Packed Cell Volume (PCV) were increased significantly (p<0.01 and p>0.05) in goats but Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) and Total Leukocyte Count (TLC) were decreased significantly (p<0.05 and p>0.01) in all treated goat and body weight was increased significantly (p<0.01) on day 28.International Journal of Natural Sciences (2015), 5(1) 26-34

Background. Herbal medication is a worldwide and ancient practice, mostly in developing countries, where a large part of the population is involved in this practice. Hence, studies must be conducted to evaluate their safety and efficiency to avoid or prevent toxicological risks due to their usage. In Togo, Carissa spinarum is a medicinal plant belonging to Apocynaceae family, used as an aphrodisiac or to heal some ailments including malaria, sickle cell anemia, hypertension, pain, and asthma. Notwithstanding its several ethnomedicinal benefits, just a few toxicological data associated with its chronic use are available. Objective. Therefore, this study aims to assess the toxicity of an ethanolic root extract of Carissa spinarum in Wistar rats. Methods. The 90-day oral toxicity process following OECD TG 408 guidelines is used. Male Wistar rats received Carissa spinarum root hydroethanolic extract at 500 and 1000 mg/kg for 90 days by oral gavage. Body weight changes, hematological and blood biochemical parameters, organ weight changes, malondialdehyde as a lipoperoxidation marker expressed according to tissue proteins, and histopathology of vital organs were assessed. Results. No signs of toxicity or mortality were observed during the 90 days experiment. Hematological parameters have not shown any treatment-related abnormalities. According to biochemical parameters, an increase in the chloride ion level was observed at 1000 mg/kg p < 0.01 . There was no significant difference between the treated groups and the control group concerning the malondialdehyde concentration, body weight, and organ relative weight. No changes in necropsy and histopathology of vital organs associated with extract treatment were observed. Conclusion. The results indicated that an ethanolic root extract of Carissa spinarum does not cause adverse effects, which can lead to Wistar rats’ death after 90-day oral administration at 500 and 1000 mg.

The experiment was carried out to determine the efficacy of Ivermectin (Ivomec® S/C Formulation) against gastrointestinal nematodiasis and ectoparasites including stephanofilaria on crossbred cattle, to determine the effect of drug on certain hematological parameters like hemoglobin (Hb) content, packed cell volume (PCV) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR)in crossbred cattle and to determine the effect of the drug on live weight. A total of 100 cattle were selected randomly and examined for presence of both endo and ectoparasites including stephanofilaria. Gastrointestinal nematodiasis were detected by examination of fecal samples and ectoparasites as well as stephanofilaria were detected by physical examination. Out of 100 cattle, 20 were found to suffer from both endo and ectoparasites. These 20 cattle were selected finally for the research work. Then these cattle were divided into two groups, group A (treated group, n=15) and group B (control group, n=5). Ivermectin was injected subcutaneously to the cattle of group A @ 200µm/kg body weight (1ml/50 kg body weight). The therapeutic efficacy of the drug against gastrointestinal nematodiasis was determined by investigation of fecal egg count reduction and the efficacy was 100% against the common nematodes in crossbred cattle on day 7, 14, 21 and 28 of post treatment period. Ticks within a markable area (25 square inches) were counted on day 0 and lice infestation was marked as infected on day 0. Ivermectin showed 100% effectiveness at the 7, 14, 21 and 28 day of post treatment period against both tick and lice infestation. The efficacy of the drug against stephanofilariasis (humpsore) was determined by reduction of diameter of the sore on the day 14, 42 and 56 of post treatment period. All the sores were completely healed up by the 56 days. During the study of hematological parameters it was seen that Hb and PCV were increased whereas ESR values were decreased on post treatment days. In this study the mean live weight of the cattle of treated group was increased after treatment with ivermectin and increased body weight was 5.13% on the 28th day of post treatment period. From the above findings it may be concluded that ivermectin was 100% effective against gastrointestinal nematodes common in crossbred cattle. Effectiveness of the drug against external parasites was 100%. In this study hematological parameters were changed significantly after treatment with ivermectin, body weight of animal treated with ivermectin was increased and no adverse effect of the drug was found in this study.

The effect of arsenic trioxide along with tannic acid, di-sodium hydrogen phosphate (DSHP), alum and effects of sand-charcoal-iron-filter (SCIF)-bed filtrated water along with alum on body weight and some hematological parameters were carried out on a total of 30 (01 month old) adult Newzealand white rabbits. The Rabbits were randomly divided in to 6 equal groups (A,B,C,D,E & F) at the ratio of three males and two females in each group, rats of group A was kept as control without giving any treatment, rabbits of group B received arsenic trioxide@100 ppm, group C received arsenic trioxide @ 100 ppm plus tannic acid @100 ppm, group D received arsenic trioxide @ 100 ppm plus di-sodium hydrogen phosphate @100 ppm, group E received arsenic trioxide @100 ppm plus alum @100 ppm orally daily for 60 days in all cases and group F received alum @100 ppm in SCIF-bed filtrated water orally daily for 60 days. The result showed that body weight gain of control group (A) per week per rabbit was found to increase but in treated group B (arsenic trioxide@100ppm orally daily) the mean body weight of group B were decreased gradually and significant (P<0.05) decrease in body weight was observed at 40 days of feeding and at day 60 it was highly significant (P<0.01). Rabbits of group C, D and E were apparently normal and mild body weight reductions were observed which was statistically insignificant. No body weight loss was observed in rabbit of group F. TEC, Hb and PCV were slightly reduced in group C, D, E and F but highly significant (P< 0.01) reduction of TEC, Hb and PCV were observed in group B. ESR values were slightly increased in group C, D, E and F but highly significant (P< 0.01) increased of ESR value was observed in group B. Leukocytosis was observed in rabbits of group B. In this study, it was concluded that treatment with arsenic oxide at low doses has harmful effects on experimental animals including hematological alterations.Asian J. Med. Biol. Res. Sunflower oil contain high concentrations of essential polyunsaturated fat with antioxidant vitamin E. The study was carried out on Swiss Albino healthy mice to evaluate the effects of additional supplementation of sunflower oil in feed on body weight, hematological parameters (total erythrocyte count and hemoglobin concentration) and biochemical parameters (total serum cholesterol, triglycerides, high density lipoproteins, low density lipoprotein and serum creatine). A total of 20, three-weeks old mice were randomly divided into two equal groups ( n=10) as A and B. Group A was considered as control (standard poultry pellet) and group B was supplemented with sunflower oil (5 mL/kg feed) respectively in addition to standard poultry pellet for 50 days. At the end of experimental trial, the mice were sacrificed for analysis of hemato-biochemical parameters. Body weight was significantly (P<0.05) higher in sunflower oil supplemented group compared to control. The total erythrocyte count and hemoglobin concentration were increased significantly (P<0.05) in group B compared to control group A. The total serum cholesterol, HDL and LDL values increased significantly (P<0.05) whereas the triglycerides concentration decreased significantly (P<0.05) in sunflower oil treated group compared to control group. On the other hand serum creatinine value showed non-significant trend to increase (P<0.2). These results suggest that sunflower oil may have beneficial effects to maintain healthy life style.
