Purpose- This research aims to examine the relationship between real earnings management (REM) and sticky Selling General and Administrative (SG&A) costs in the case of a developing economy. Design/Methodology- The study employed a purposive sampling method. Fifteen firms listed on Ghana stock exchange were selected for the study. Data from the period of 2005 to 20014 were collected. Findings- The study finds Ghanaian listed firm's SG&A cost to be sticky and also see these firms to manipulate earnings through REM. This study finds that REM through discretionary expenses and production cost increases sticky SG&A cost, whereas REM through cash flow reduces sticky SG&A cost. Overall, the results imply that REM exhibit sticky cost. Practical Implications- The study informs managers that cost is not only fixed or variable but also behaves asymmetrically. The understanding of this concept could help managers to implement strategies that will lower the cost of doing business. Also, since some managers deliberately make decisions that lead to real earnings management and sticky cost, we, therefore, believe that this research will be of importance to regulatory bodies, policymakers, investors, and other stakeholders.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to emphasize the relationship between managerial ability, earnings management, internal control quality and audit fees to establish whether or not there is a significant relationship between the variables of managerial ability, earnings management, internal control quality and the audit fees. Design/methodology/approach The study sample includes 190 listed companies on the Tehran Stock Exchange during 2009–2016. Research hypotheses were tested using the statistical methods of multivariable linear regression and data envelopment analysis pattern. Findings The obtained results indicate that there is a significant and direct relationship between managerial ability and internal control quality as well as real earnings management and internal control quality. Based on the results obtained from the second hypothesis, the authors could claim that there is an inverse and significant relationship managerial ability and audit fees. The third hypothesis also revealed that in companies with lower audit fees, there is a stronger relationship between managerial ability and internal control quality. The results of related tests show no significant relationship between accrual-based earnings management and internal control quality. Originality/value This paper is the first study in Iran whose main focus is on the relationship between managerial ability, earnings management, internal control quality and audit fees.

Abstract Research background: The literature on the subject matter emphasizes the lack of empirical research on the relationships between accrual-based earnings management (AEM) and real earnings management (REM), while studies conducted so far are characterized by highly ambiguous results. Purpose: The main aim of the paper is to present the results of empirical research on the relationships between the AEM and REM practices used to create financial results in industrial public companies listed on the WSE. Research methodology: The research sample concerns 72 listed companies whose shares were traded on the Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE) for a minimum 13 years in the adopted reference period of 2003–2017. The estimation of AEM and REM practices was made by using: the Jones model, the Kang-Sivaramakrishnan model and the Roychowdhury methodology. Results: The empirical results allowed showing the existence of a statistically significant, negative relationship between discretionary accruals and the abnormal level of an operational cash flow indicator, as well as between discretionary accruals and the total REM indicator. An in-depth cross-sectional analysis showed the existence of significantly differentiated relationships between the studied variables in individual branches of industry. Novelty: Research on the relationship between AEM and REM practices in the context of the Polish capital market has not been carried out so far, hence it can be considered a new research area in which there is a justified need to deepen theoretical and empirical research on the EM phenomenon.

This study aims to provide empirical evidence whether earnings management can influence the cost of equity capital and whether the company's life cycle can strengthen or weaken the relationship between earnings management and the cost of equity capital. Profit Management in this study was measured using a discretionary accrual proxy. The company's life cycle is measured using the company's cash flow pattern and the cost of equity capital measured using measurements from Ohlson's (1995) model modified by Utami (2005). This study is classified as causative research. The population in this study are manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange period of 2013 to 2017.By using purposive sampling method, there were 60 companies as the research’s sample. The type of data used is secondary data obtained from www.idx.co.id. The analysis used in this study is multiple linear regression analysis. The results of this study are that earnings management has no significant positive effect on the cost of equity capital and the company's life cycle is not able to strengthen or weaken the relationship of earnings management with the cost of equity capital.

This study investigates the relationship between corporate site visits (CSVs) and firms’ real earnings management. Using a unique dataset of site visits to Chinese firms listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange from 2009 to 2016, we find that such visits are negatively associated with firms’ real earnings management. The results are robust to using alternative CSV measures, controlling for alternative communication channels, and using the propensity score matching method. In cross-sectional analyses, we find that the negative association between site visits and real earnings management is stronger for more complex firms and firms with greater information asymmetry. In addition, we find that CSVs are negatively associated with both management and corporate misconduct but not with accrual-based earnings management or restatements.

This research purposely looks into earnings management and how it relates to firm performance. By attempt of gaining empirical results, we proxy firm performance by return on assets (ROA)and return on equity (ROE) as dependent variables. We respectively model discretionary accruals and abnormal cash flow from operations as independent variables supported by firm size, leverage, and liquidity as control variables. Panel analysis was adopted to test a sample of 14 non-financial listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange from 2008 to 2019. We find that firms use both accrual earnings and real earnings methods to manage earnings. Results further indicate firms employ the efficient concept of earnings management to facilitate positive firm performance. Our analysis shows that companies with future acquisition prospects can use earnings management to boost financial efficiency. Although we find evidence of a positive relationship between EM and firm performance, we encourage authorities and facilitators to implement rules requiring transparent financial information to mitigate misleading results and reduce managers discretion. Prospective investors must also perform an in depth review of financial records prior to investing. Finally, our research has added to the body of expertise on earnings management, which positively impacts firm performance. Abstract This research is aimed to examine the moderating effect of the cost of earnings management on the relationship between earnings management and future earnings. Research samples are manufacture companies listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange 2013-2015. The cost of accruals earnings management is auditor quality, while the costs of real earnings management are the market share and financial health. Based on the fixed effect regression test, auditor quality strengthens the positive effect of accruals earnings management on future performance, while market share and financial health weaken the negative effect of real earnings management on future earnings. It indicates that in the context of efficient contracting, high quality auditor provide better signal for earnings prediction compared to the low quality auditor. In addition, higher market share and higher financial health limit opportunistic real earnings management to reduce future earnings.

The population of this study is a manufacturing company listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange which amounted to 146 companies. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling and resulted in 420 units of analysis. This type of research is quantitative causality by performing hypothesis testing analysis is done by using multiple linear regression model. The findings of this research are tax avoidance will add to the risks that must be borne by investors thus increasing uncertainty over their investment. Investors consider that accrual profit management actions are opportunistic as risk-taking actions as well as real profit management actions. While on Capital Intensity, investors assume the information on the company’s fixed assets is not useful in making investment decisions. The conclusions that can be taken are tax avoidance, accrual profit management, and earnings management real positive to the cost of equity. However, capital intensity has a negative effect.
