Cherry fruits have a short harvesting season and a limited shelf life of only a few days. Therefore, it is necessary to develop modern storage technologies that would allow to extend their consumption period. The purpose of the study was to determine the storage efficiency of cherry fruits, pre-treated with polysaccharide compositions, by the Harrington method. For research, the fruits of Alpha and Pamyat Artemenka cherries varieties, sprayed with a solution of salicylic acid; solution of chitosan with salicylic acid, dried, removed from the trees at the consumer stage of maturity, each variety and type of processing, put in boxes №5 for storage at a temperature of 1±0.5 °C and relative humidity of 95±1 %. Physicochemical and organoleptic parameters were determined in the fruits during storage. The generalized Harrington function was used to summarize the results of the research. According to the generalized response, cherry fruits of the Alpha and Pamyat Artemenka varieties are better preserved after pre-treatment with a solution of salicylic acid with chitosan (D = 0.95 and 0.97). They were slightly inferior to cherry fruits treated with a solution of salicylic acid with a generalized response rate of 0.86 and 0.77. Cherry fruits pre-treated with a solution of salicylic acid with chitosan were stored for up to 30 days whereas the untreated ones (control) were stored for only 15 days (D = 0.63 and 0.49). Since the indicators of the generalized response were higher in the fruits of Alpha cherries, compared with the Pamyat Artemenka, Alpha cherry fruits can be considered more suitable for storage. Thus, the use of the generalized Harrington desirability function made it possible to objectively assess the cherries for suitability for storage. Treatment with a solution of salicylic acid with chitosan was the best for processing cherry fruits before storage. Key words: cherry fruits, Harrington method, salicylic acid, chitosan, storage.

Cherry fruits have a short shelf life due to the period of their storage. Therefore, to extend it, a search for new storage technologies is underway. The purpose of the research carried out during 2016-2019 at the experimental pomology station named after L.P. Simirenko IS NAAN, was the determination of the organoleptic and physical characteristics of fresh cherry fruits before and after storage when processed with polysaccharide compositions. Studies have shown that the weight of cherry varieties Zhadana, Chance, Optimist and In Memoriam Artemenko are large, their weight ranges from 5.2 to 4.8 g. The color of cherry fruits, experimental varieties, determined by the light transmittance did not indicate a significant difference within the variety. The sugar-acid index of cherry fruits prevailed in cherry fruits of Elegant and Alpha varieties, taking values above 5. Cherry fruits had a good organoleptic evaluation. Among all the experimental varieties, the fruits of the Elegant cherry variety were distinguished by their excellent tasting evaluation, appearance and gloss. According to the studied physical and organoleptic parameters and the cluster analysis, the Griot Podbelsky variety (control) was more universal. According to the group of indicators, the fruits of cherry varieties: Alpha, Optimist and Zhadana differed from Elegant and Chance. The smallest changes, compared to the control, in the fruits of cherries varieties Alpha and Optimist. After storage of cherry fruits treated with chitosan with salicylic acid compared to untreated fruits, the taste of the fruit did not deteriorate. Fruits treated with a solution of salicylic acid with chitosan or sodium alginate had an excellent tasting score. The prospect of further research is to establish the effect of polysaccharide compositions based on chitosan and sodium alginate and organoleptic characteristics of cherries of different varieties after storage.

Aims: To evaluate the efficacy, side effects of laser 532-nm Nd:YAG picosecond in treating solar lentigo and ephelides at HCMC hospital of dermato-venereology. Objectives and Method: Prospective - descriptive study. There were 43 patients dealing with solar lentigo and ephelides treated with laser 532-nm Nd:YAG picosecond. Each patient went through 3 treatments with one month interval, three months follow up for delayed side effects and recurrent. Evaluating the treatment by MI, VLCS, self-patient evaluation with 5 grades scale. Evaluating side effects of the treatment by 5 grade Wong-Baker scale. Collected data were analysed with SPSS.20.0. Results: Based on MI at the end of the study, the effectiveness of the treatment gained 81.4% good, 16.3% average and 2.3% bad. Self-patient evaluation revealed 76.7% good, 20.9% average and 2.3% bad. VLCS of post-treatment reduced 7.44 ± 2.14 unit compares with of pre-treatment. Recently after treatment, 100% patients had erythema and mild pain in 5 grade Wong-Baker scale, 20.9% had mild edema, 2.3% had post imflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Two ephelides cases recurred 3 months after treatment (4.6%). Conclusions: Laser 523-nm Nd:YAG picosecond has high efficacy and less side effects in treating solar lentigo and ephelides. Water consumption (WC) by 39.5 animal units (AU) of grazing cattle was studied at a central Alberta site in summer. Average WC AU−1 was estimated at 48.9 L d−1. WC increased by 0.68 L AU−1 (P < 0.01) for each percentage decrease in relative humidity, increased by 0.81 L AU−1 (P < 0.02) for each degree Celsius increase in maximum daily temperature, and increased by 0.15 L AU−1 (P < 0.06) as cattle grew and the season progressed. Relative humidity is shown to be an important determinant of WC in grazing cattle. Key words: Water consumption, animal unit, temperature, humidity, grazing cattle

The cracked heel is one of popular problems occurred within thai society. In this study, stick-formed preparation (ST) was developed for portability and convenient to use. The formula contained natural oil, coconut oil (C) or rice bran oil (R), for moisturizing purpose. It was found that 10% R giving a suitable hardness for ST. After addition of 5% salicylic acid (SA) in ST, its hardness was decrease. The modification of formula was performed to obtain a suitable hardness. The ability of moisture retaining (MR) from ST and commercial cream (CO) were evaluated at 32°C for 24 hr with 50% relative humidity, the result was shown that ST giving better MR than CO (P=0.0028). After 4 cycles of freeze-thaw stability study, the ST hardness was not significantly change (P>0.05). However, the amount of SA in ST from dissolution with Paddle over Disc method using acetate buffer pH 5.5 at 32°C was lower than in CO.

Abstract Background: MDS with del 5q are characterized by profound anemia, which until the recent introduction of lenalidomide (N Engl J Med2005; 352: 549–57, J Clin Oncol2005;16S:5), was considered generally unresponsive to available treatments. In order to reevaluate the outcome of those patients in the pre-lenalidomide era, we analyzed response of anemia in MDS with del 5q treated with EPO ± G-CSF and thalidomide in previous GFM trials. Patients: MDS with del 5q included in 419 MDS treated with EPO or Darbepoetin (DAR) ± G-CSF by GFM centers (including 3 successive GFM trials: Blood2004; 104: 321–7; Blood2005;106 suppl 1: 712a; Br J Haematol2006;133: 513–9 and submitted to ASH 2006), and in 134 MDS treated with thalidomide in two successive GFM trials (Br J Haematol2005; 131: 609–18, and submitted to ASH 2006). Patients received at least 30,000 U/w of EPO or 300 mg/w of DAR and doses ranging from 50 to 800 mg/d of Thalidomide during at least 12 weeks. Results: 48 MDS with del 5q received EPO (or DAR) ± G-CSF, including 30 pts with del 5q alone, 9 with one and 9 with >1 additional cytogenetic abn; 21/48 had marrow blasts ≥5% (7 had >10%). 17 had the “5q- syndrome” according to WHO. Median pre-treatment EPO level was 287 UI/L (range 12–5,665), i.e. significantly more than in non del 5q cases (median 68, p<0.001). 22/48 pts (46%) had erythroid response, including 15 major and 7 minor (11 responses after EPO or DAR alone and 11 after EPO or DAR + G-CSF) vs. 64% in pts without del 5q (p=0.01) (p= 0.066 after adjustment for marrow blasts). The response rate was 52%, 55%, 22% and 33%, respectively in del 5q pts with the 5q- syndrome, one additional cytogenetic abn, >1 additional cytogenetic abn, and marrow blasts ≥5%. Response duration was significantly shorter in MDS with del 5q than in other MDS (mean 12 vs. 24 months, p=0.019) and in pts with 5q- syndrome vs. other MDS with marrow blasts <5% (mean 11vs. 24months, p=0.025). 20 pts with del 5q were treated with thalidomide. 6/20 had an erythroid response (30 %, including 3 major and 3 minor responses) vs. 29% of other MDS (p=NS) Conclusion: MDS with del 5q with ≤1 additional cytogenetic abn and no excess of marrow blasts may have erythroid response to EPO ± G-CSF but responses are generally very short, while response rates to thalidomide are low. Those results are clearly inferior to results obtained with lenalidomide in MDS with del 5q.

17026 Background: SCLC is an aggressive malignancy, but has shown high response rate to CT. Performance status (PS) has been recognized as one of the main prognostic factors in SCLC. Sudden and toxic deaths after CT were found to correlate with poor PS. There are few data about risk-benefit ratio of CT in PS 3 and 4 patients, although it has been often used. This study was performed to assess the clinical and laboratorial factors and the outcome of poor PS SCLC patients that received CT in our institution. Methods: A retrospective review was performed at INCA’s tumor registry for SCLC cases diagnosed between January 2001 and December 2004. Patients with pre-treatment ECOG PS 3 and 4 that received CT were selected for analysis. Results: Thirty of 107 SCLC patients (28%) were eligible (73.3% PS 3/ 26.7% PS 4). The median patient age was 64 years and 73.3% were male. Extensive- disease was observed in 83% of these patients. At the first cycle, 21 patients (70%) had to be hospitalized to receive CT and 5 of them (24%) required respiratory support. There were 10 deaths (33.3%) after the first cycle of CT. The median response rate was 77.8% and median overall survival was 2.8 months (138 days for PS 3 and 5 days for PS 4). In this series, there was a statistically significant correlation of PS 4, high serum LDH, hospitalization to start treatment and respiratory support with worse survival. Conclusions: Despite good response rate, poor PS patients, especially PS 4, had high risk of early CT related mortality and had dismal survival. Further studies are required to determine how to best treat these high-risk patients, in particular PS 4 patients, to minimize the early treatment related mortality and to give them the best form of palliation and prolongation of life.
