A crossbreeding experiment between Hilly, a locally adapted chicken type in Bangladesh and Fayoumi, an egg type light chicken breed was carried out to evaluate phenotypic performances and to estimate genetic parameters for body weight and egg production at sexual maturity. Results show the mean hatch weight of Hilly♂ × Fayoumi♀ (H♂×F♀) crosses was 35±0.1 gm. In this study, H♂×F♀ crossbred showed a heavier body weight (1551± 32.0 gm/bird) at 20 weeks in comparison with other indigenous chicken genotypes in Bangladesh. The highest body weight gain was found in 8-10 weeks of age. H♂×F♀ crossbred hens exhibited sexual maturity at an average age of 147.5±1.6 days with an average body weight of 1350± 16.8 gm/bird. The mean weight of eggs at sexual maturity was 33.7±0.5 gm/egg. The estimates of heritability for body weight were ranged from 0.15 to 0.26. We observed a positive genetic correlation between weight at sexual maturity (WSM) and egg weight at sexual maturity (EWSM), meaning that hens with high weight at sexual maturity would produce heavier eggs.Asian J. A longitudinal study was carried out to investigate the influence of two different rearing systems of young kids on their development to sexual maturity. Kids born to small ruminant lentiviruses-infected (SRLV) female goats were split into two groups: the immediately-after-birth weaned group and the unweaned group. Kids’ body weight (BWT) was measured before the first consumption of colostrum, and then at the age of one week, and one, two, four, and seven months. The relationship between the rearing system and BWT at each age was investigated using mixed linear models adjusted for potential confounders. The mean BWT of kids of the immediately-after-birth weaned group was significantly lower at the age of one week, one month, and two months, and then the difference became insignificant. The mean daily body weight gain (DWG) was significantly lower in the immediately-after-birth weaned group during the whole first month of life, but then DWG in both groups became equal. Crude mortality rate did not differ significantly between groups. This study shows that weaning kids immediately after birth does not appear to have any negative impact on kids’ development except transient growth retardation, which is fully compensated until they reach sexual maturity.

 Four dietary treatments differing in protein levels were compared to ascertain the protein requirement of laying Japanese quail in a semi-arid environment. One hundred and twenty quails were randomly assigned to four treatments (TI — 22%CR T2 — 20%CP T3 — 18%CP and T4 - I6%CP) in a completely randomized block design Each treatment was replicated thrice with ten quails each. Feed intake, body weight gain, hen day egg production, feed conversion ratio FCR), egg quality and hematological constituents were the response criteria. The study lasted seven weeks. Feed and water were provided ad libitum throughout the experimental period No significant (P> 0.05) effect of dietary protein was observed for feed intake, average body weight gain, hen-day egg production, F CR, dressing percentage and hematological parameters. Average body weight was significantly (P<0,05) enhanced by high dietary protein. Egg weight and Haugh unit were significantly (P<0. 05) better for the groups fed the higher protein levels (20 and 22% CP). Hen-day egg production, albumen index, specific gravity, shell weight and percent shell were not affected (P>0.05) by dietary protein levels. The costs of producing l kg egg in the treatment groups were ₦25926, ₦21007, ₦252.44 and ₦1263./10 for T1, T2, T3 and T4, respectively. It was concluded that about 20%CP is required in the diets of laying Japanese quail under a semi-arid environment of Nigeria.

Data on the Ife Breed of the indigenous chicken and the Apollo, an imported commercial egg strain were analysed for effect of breed, time and generation of hatch, body weight at various ages, and age at sexual maturity on egg weight and rate of egg production to eight months. There were highly significant generation and breed differences, with a mean of 116 eggs for the Ife Breed compared to 106 for the Apollo over two generations. Other factors that significantly affected egg production were body weight and age at sexual maturity, and mature egg weight. Mean pullet year egg weight showed breed and hatch differences and were significantly affected by body weight and age at sexual maturity. Mean egg weight for the Ife Breed was 32.3 compared to 48.7 for the Apollo.

The relative economic weight (REW) of a trait is the additional gain/loss from a unit change in the trait relative to other traits in an individual. They are used to calculate aggregate economic values for purposes of genetic improvement in animals. The present study was designed to evaluate the bio-economic variables of growth and 16 weeks egg production parameters: egg number (EN16) egg weight (EWT16) body weight at first egg (BWTFE), body weight at 16 week of lay (BWTE16), cost of feed, and revenue from eggs and chicken carcass, 16 feed conversion ratio (FCR ), and body weight gain (BWG16) in the Nigerian indigenous chicken, and to determine the economic weights (EW) and REW of EN16, EWT16 and BWTE16 for G0, G1, and G2 generations. A total of 250 pullets (20 week old, point of lay) from a population of heavy body weight local chickens were used for the study. The birds were housed individually in cages, fed optimally on layers mash (G and G : 100g/bird/day; G : 0 1 2 125g/bird/day) and given water ad libitum. Data included EN , EWT , BWTE , BWTFE, 16 16 16 and prices of feed, eggs and spent hens, FCR , and BWG . Data on EN , EWT , BWTE , 16 16 16 16 16 and BWTFE were compared across generations using ANOVAand with other variables were used to generate the EW of the traits. The EW were then standardized relative to that of BWTE . Results showed that EW and REW of EN , EWT , and BWTE were 7.47 and 3.15, 16 16 16 16 13.67 and 5.77 and -2.37 and -1.00, respectively in G ; 13.07 and 3.82, 23.69 and 6.93, and - 0 3.42 and -1.00, respectively in G ; 16.80 and 2.89, 30.75 and 5.28 and -5.82 and -1.00, 1 respectively in G generation. Thus EN and EWT enhanced while BWTE depressed the 2 16 16 16 worth of the hen as a layer. EWT was more important than EN and both were more 16 16 important than BWTE economically. Therefore, EWT and EN are the major bio-economic 16 variables of the local hen as an egg chicken.

An immunomodulator is a natural body defence mechanism due to the stimulation of objects/ environments, both specific and non-specific by means of cellular and humoraldefence. The objective of the study was to prove the immunomodulation ability of broiler chickens up to age 35 days that dietary fed various wheat pollard based rations. The design used in the study was a complete randomized design with six treatments and three replications. The treatment of broiler rats consisted of BR-IAJ (T0), control feed with wheat pollard base (T1), control feed with wheat pollard base plus probiotic (T2), wheat pollard based feed steamed (T3), fermented wheat pollard based feed 40% (T4 ) and fermented wheat pollard based feed 60% (T5). The rations used contained 20,5-22,5% protein with 2900-3100 Kcal metabolic energy. Lohman MB 202 Platinum from PT. Japfa Comfeed used in research with average day old chick (DOC) weight of 36,39 + 2,45 g. Parameters observed included body weight, feed intake, feed conversion ratio (FCR), relative weights of liver organ, thymus, lymph and bursa fabricius. The results showed that wheat pollard-based rations had a significant effect (p <0,05) on the relative weight of liver organ, body weight, FCR and ration consumption, but did not affect the relative weights of spleen organ, thymus and bursa fabricius. The mean relative weight of consecutive liver as follows: 2,47 g (T0), 2,83 g (T1), 3,40 g (T2), 2,99 g (T3), 3,15 g (T4) and 3,06 g (T5). The average body weight, consumption and FCR rations were as follows: 1415,24 g; 136,45 g/day; 2,03 (T0), 775,04 g; 125,19 g/day; 3,40 (T1), 813,17 g; 129,86 g / day; 3,36 (T2), 792,89 g; 128,14 g /day; 3,54 (T3), 892,91 g; 138,33 g /day; 3,27 (T4), 969,56 g; 155,52 g/day; 3,37 (T5). The conclusion of the study was that the ration with the addition of wheat pollard 60% was able to provide an increase in body weight gain and the best immunomodulation seen from the aspect of the proportion of immunomodulating organs to the growth of broiler chickens.

The present study was carried out in six indigenous ecotypes of two divisions of Karnataka to assess association of twenty microsatellite regions of thirteen chicken autosomes with age, body weight and egg weight at sexual maturity and Forty week egg production. The general molecular technique protocols were adopted wherever required in PCR, electrophoresis, gel staining and reading. The analysis revealed significant difference (p<0.05) among genotypes combined across ecotypes for nineteen microsatellite loci for body weight at sexual maturity. The analysis revealed significant difference (P<0.05) among genotypes combined across ecotypes for eighteen microsatellite loci for EWSM. The posthoc dunnet's test conducted in one of the microsatellite region ADL0020 genotypes after excluding genotypes with only one bird at 0.05 level of significance revealed that a particular genotype A was significantly different from two of the genotypes C and D, indicating the important role of the corresponding alleles of these genotypes in influencing the Body weight at sexual maturity. The validity of using thus identified markers or alleles need further authentication by research in other populations and further proof by expression studies.

The study was aimed at investigating the productive and reproductive performances of the rural chicken in Bangladesh. A total of 200 indigenous chickens in the villages of Sherpur district in Bangladesh was used in this study to collect the data on body weight at hatch (BWH), body weight at sexual maturity (BWS), body weight gain up to sexual maturity (BSBG), body weight gain from sexual maturity to one year of age (BYSG), body weight at one year of age (BWY), age at sexual maturity (AGSX), eggs per clutch (EGC), clutches per year (CLY), hatchability (HATCH) and survivability (SURV). The data showed that cap headed (CH) chickens were good meat producer (1027.14±25.32g meat at one year of age), and Non-Descript Deshi (ND) chickens were good egg producer with 12.03±0.11 eggs per clutch and 4.15±0.07 clutches per year, respectively. The effects of village, sex and type of birds on AGSX of indigenous chickens were significant but, only the effects of chicken type on EGC were significant (P<0.01). At present study, most of growth and reproductive traits found positively correlated and this might be suggestive that selection for one trait would affect the other positively. These results could be used as a guideline for planning, conservation and improvement of indigenous chickens of Bangladesh.Bang. J. Anim. Sci. 2017. 46 (2): 121-127

The objective of the research was to evaluate to effect of feeding mengkudu on performances of broilers. The research design used was completely randomized design. One hundred broilers were distributed into five treatments. The treatments were different levels of mengkudu meal (0, 0.75%, 1.5%, 2.25 % and 3%). The observed measured were feed consumption, average body weight (gain) and feed conversion. Results showed that feeding mengkudu (Morinda Citrifolia L.)  no effect significant (P>0.05) on feed consumption, average body weight and feed conversion.  In conclusion, feeding mengkudu meal up to 3% (in diet) does not negatively affect feed consumption, average body weight, and feed conversion.

Two trials were conducted to determine feed color effects on broiler performance. A completely randomized design was used. Trial 1 included four treatments: control (complete broiler starter diet), red, green, and blue; and Trial 2 included four treatments: control, orange, yellow, and purple. Each trial had 4 treatments with 4 replicates (60 birds/treatment) fed to 240 male Cobb 500 broilers during a 21 d grow out. Data were analyzed using the GLM procedure. In Trial 1, there were no treatment effects on average body weight, body weight gain, and feed consumption (p > 0.05). Adjusted feed conversion for control (1.23) was less than red (1.27; p = 0.001) and green (1.26; p = 0.009), with blue (1.25; p = 0.056) tending to be different during the experimental period. In Trial 2, there were no treatment effects on average body weight, feed consumption, and adjusted feed conversion during this study (p > 0.05). Body weight gain between d 1 to 14 for purple (490.78 g/bird) was more than orange (467 g/bird; p = 0.013) and yellow (461 g/bird; p= 0.004), with control (474 g/bird; p = 0.052) tending to be different. Results indicate that these feed colors had some, albeit limited, influence on broiler performance parameters.

Four unrelated pure strains of White Leghorns including a grandparent strain from industry and 12 two-strain, 24 three-strain, 24 four-strain and 12 F2 strain crosses produced contemporaneously were used to examine the role of dominance and epistasis in heterosis. A control strain and a commercial strain were also included. For egg weight, the heterosis observed closely approximated that expected due to dominance alone. For sexual maturity and body weight, dominance was the major component of heterosis, but epistasis made a significant contribution — additive by additive (A × A) genetic effects for sexual maturity and 140-d body weight, and parental epistasis for mature body weight. Both dominance and epistasis played a significant role in heterosis for egg production traits. A × A, dominance by dominance (D × D) and additive by dominance (A × D) epistasis were all important for hen-housed egg production and hen-housed egg yield. For hen-day rate of egg production, A × A epistasis was significant only early in the laying year (to 273 d), A × D and D × D were significant to 385 d and in the full year (to 497 d); however, none (A × A, A × D and D × D) was significant near the end of lay (386–497 d). Overall heterosis estimates for full year egg production measured as hen-housed egg production to 497 d or hen-day rate from housing to 497 d clearly showed that on average two-strain crosses were superior to three-strain crosses which were superior to four-strain crosses which in turn exceeded the F2 crosses. Nevertheless, several three-strain crosses had performance for egg production that was equal to or better than the two-strain cross with the highest egg production. Thus, in commerce, where the level of egg production is of great economic importance, the testing and use of a specific three-way cross combination will usually result in a better commercial product.
