In the era of information explosion, it is impossible for anyone to keep himself up-to-date with the literature by reading alone. Moreover there is vast amount of un-useful information added each day in the literature. Someone has to remain up-to-date with the valid and usable new information. Since its inception, journal club has been used as a useful meeting with the purposes of staying abreast of scientific publications and to judge their usability. In this article the concept of journal club and its practices were reviewed. The journal club has been proved to be a versatile program for its adaptable and multidirectional format to help the participants to develop many essential skills. It is now used as an academic program and is incorporated into curriculum in many institutes. Critical appraisal journal club models are most widely used to accomplish defined learning objectives. Evidence based journal club is one step ahead, through which practitioners judge the evidences and weigh its usability to bring a change in practice. Each institute should have defined journal club objectives for the development of students learning capability and also to develop and cultivate more skilled faculty. The practice of journal club can be adjusted and formatted according to the set goal of the organizing authority and the learning objectives of the participants. Abstract Aim Much of medical education has been abruptly forced online during the COVID-19 pandemic. Traditional journal clubs thrive on group interaction and debate. The aim of this project is to assess whether an online surgical journal club could replicate this experience and learning. Method A fortnightly, chat-based online surgical journal club with national reach was re-launched under SCALPEL (Manchester Medical School’s surgical society) with defined learning objectives, inclusion of studies from different surgical sub-specialities and a proforma to aid critical appraisal. Anonymous feedback forms were sent to participants to assess confidence in critically appraising the literature before and after attendance, and differences in means were analysed using paired t-test. Results 32 feedback forms from participants, the majority of whom were final year medical students (34.4%) were analysed. 28.1% had previously attended a journal club. 65.6% of attendees had prior involvement in a research project which led to a publication for 18.8%, while 59.4% were interested in applying for the Academic Foundation Programme (AFP). The self-reported confidence of participants to identify the study design, interpret the results and statistical analyses; and scrutinise the strengths and weaknesses of a study increased by 12.2%, 14.7% and 15.9% respectively (p = <0.001). Furthermore, 96.9% of attendees stated they would attend another online journal club in the future, with 59.4% favouring an online format. Conclusions Online surgical journal clubs are effective and are here to stay following the conclusion of social distancing. They have the advantage of further outreach and may encourage greater participation than traditional journal clubs.

Scientific publications enable results and ideas to be transmitted throughout the scientific community. The number and type of journal publications also have become the primary criteria used in evaluating career advancement. Our analysis suggests that publication practices have changed considerably in the life sciences over the past thirty years. More experimental data is now required for publication, and the average time required for graduate students to publish their first paper has increased and is approaching the desirable duration of Ph.D. training. Since publication is generally a requirement for career progression, schemes to reduce the time of graduate student and postdoctoral training may be difficult to implement without also considering new mechanisms for accelerating communication of their work. The increasing time to publication also delays potential catalytic effects that ensue when many scientists have access to new information. The time has come for life scientists, funding agencies, and publishers to discuss how to communicate new findings in a way that best serves the interests of the public and the scientific community.

AIMS AND METHODIn response to frequent cancellations, we recently changed the format of our journal club. We invited a statistician to attend and each meeting focused specifically on critical appraisal and statistical analysis. Active learning principles were used where every participant critically appraised an aspect of the paper presented at each meeting. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the impact of the new format on attendance and satisfaction levels. Attendance and satisfaction levels were measured in the 3 months before and the 3 months after the new format was introduced.RESULTSAverage attendance increased from 10 to 15, with two psychologists and two trainees who did not work in the hospital starting to attend regularly. Satisfaction levels also increased significantly with respect to academic interest, enjoyment, usefulness and overall satisfaction.CONCLUSIONCombining statistical expertise with principles of active learning has led to increased satisfaction levels among participants in our journal club.

BACKGROUND Due to Covid-19 lockdown initiated by the Government, the teaching was transformed to an online sphere. Reflection from students was quite essential for advancement in newer platforms. Thus, perception of various online teachinglearning methods among medical students were assessed. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study conducted among phase-1 MBBS students of Government Medical College, Thrissur. This study was done to analyse medical student’s perceptions on four methods of online classes which included live online lectures, assignments, sending PowerPoint presentations and pre-recorded videos. All statistical data was analysed using SPSS software version 16. Continuous variables was expressed as mean ± standard deviation. Difference between the groups were analysed by simple ANOVA but the subgroup analysis in each variable was done by post hoc analysis with Bonferroni test. The level of significance was kept at 5%. RESULTS When different variables were analysed by anova, it was found out that emphasizing important aspects of topics, describing the contents in a logical sequence and interaction was significantly better in live online lectures. Coverage of learning objectives and description of concepts was significantly better in narrative PowerPoint presentation. Likewise, it significantly helped them to prepare notes for examination. Live online lectures effectively used audio-visual aids and it has aroused interest in the subject. Live online lecture was found to be the best single method as compared to the other three when all ten variables were analysed conjointly. CONCLUSIONS The preferred method for online teaching for phase-1 medical students was online lectures when all variables were analysed. Important aspects of topics were emphasized, the contents were discovered in a logical sequence, the audio-visuals were used effectively, and interest was aroused in topics through live online lectures. All the learning objectives were covered and described very clearly and note preparation was easy in PowerPoint presentation.
