Primary data from various stakeholders were collected to examine the issues and options in the production of high value crops in coastal region of Pakistan. During 2002, a list of betel leaf and muskmelon growers of Thatta District were developed and out of sampling frame, 160 growers were randomly selected. In the coastal area, growers are engaged in agriculture, fishing, and livestock activities. They keep camel, buffalo, and cattle mainly for milk, which is domestically consumed or sold at village level. The socio-economic conditions of growers living in coastal villages are very poor. Most of the male are unemployed or employed on daily wages. Women are engaged in fish processing industries as unskilled worker and earn a meager income. The analysis of betel leaf and muskmelon was carried out to examine the economic viability of these crops in the coastal region. Analysis shows that these crops have tremendous potential and have no competition in the existing crops in the region. The growers received high net return from betel leaf cultivation and reasonable income from muskmelon cultivation in the coastal region. The major issues for the development of high value crops in the region as identified were high initial cost, poor management operations, low input use, control of insectpests and diseases and lack of knowledge. The study was conducted in four betel leaf growing areas, namely Barisal, Chittagong, Rajshahi and Kustia district during 2013-14 to assess the cultivation practices, physical productivity, profitability, and to explore the constraints to betel leaf cultivation. The study has been designed to investigate the economics of betel leaf production considering intensive cultivated areas for recent information in Bangladesh. From each district, two upazilas were selected considering the concentration of betel leaf growers and easy access. Also from each upazila, two blocks and from each block 20 farmers were selected with the consultation of Upazila Agriculture Officer and Sub Assistant Agriculture Officer. The study revealed that betel leaf cultivation was profitable in the study areas, although BCR in the first and second years was below one which was due to high initial cost. The highest yield and gross return of betel leaf cultivation were in the fifth year. The benefit cost ratio was found highest in 6-10 year followed by 5th and 11-15 year. The benefit cost ratio at 12%, 15% and 20% rate of interest were 1.27, 1.25 and 1.21 respectively. Internal rate of return (IRR) was calculated 62% in current situation, IRR 37% was found by 10% decrease of return and 39% by 10% increase of cost. The problems like leaf rot disease, high price of boroj materials, low price of betel leaf, high price of oilcake, etc. were facing by the betel leaf farmers.Bangladesh J. Agril. This research investigates how indigenous knowledge helps to reduce disaster risks in the coastal areas of Bangladesh, specifically in the study area of Kutubdia, Cox’s Bazaar. The location of the coastal area of Bangladesh is funnel shaped which is regarded as one of the most vulnerable cyclone-prone regions in the world because of its location and physiography. Almost every year coastal people experiences this nature induced devastation and loses their lives and property. However, to cope with this type of natural calamity and minimize their loss, coastal people apply their inherited practical knowledge that has been aimed to explore by this research. To conduct this research three types of survey methods has been used: primary data were collected using Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) tools, Focus Group Discussion(FGD) and semi-structured questionnaire survey. First of all, the study explored interesting house construction practices, techniques and protection maneuvers those reflect the ideas of indigenous knowledge of coastal people as primitive adaptation strategies to the cyclone disaster. It has also been found that the other indigenous practices like early cyclone warning system from nature including animal behavior and weather condition. AbstractThe decline in fishermen's income was triggered by increased household needs while the income of fishermen's fate seemed to be unbearable. This is also experienced by Neyan in the Coastal Region of Mandolang District, Minahasa Regency. Their income continues to decline even more often they have no cost for their daily lives. They are in debt which is strangling their necks. They are increasingly desperate because there is no solution offered either from the government or from other relevant parties. Starting from the background, the problem is formulated as follows: 1. What causes the level of income of fishermen in the Coastal Zone of Mandolang District to decrease; 2. How do they increase their income. The research objectives are: 1. To describe and analyze what causes the level of income of fishermen in the Coastal Zone of Mandolang District to decrease; 2. To analyze how they increase their income. This research will be carried out in the Coastal Area of Mandolang District, Minahasa Regency in 2017 since it was signed a work contract with LPPM. The method in this study is purposive sampling method. Data sources are primary data and secondary data. Mereka terlbat utang yang semakin mencekik leher.  Mereka semakin putus asa karena belum ada jalan keluar yang ditawarkan baik dari pemerintah ataupun dari pihak-pihak terkait lainnya.  Bertitik tolak dari latar belakang tersebut maka masalah dirumuskan sebagai berikut: 1. Apa yang menyebabkan turunnya tingkat pendapatan nelayan di Wilayah Pesisir Kecamatan Mandolang; 2. Bagaimana cara mereka meningkatkan pendapatan mereka. Adapun tujuan penelitian adalah : 1. Untuk mengdeskripsikan dan menganalisis apa yang menyebabkan turunnya tingkat pendapatan nelayan di Wilayah Pesisir Kecamatan Mandolang; 2. Untuk menganalisis bagaimana cara mereka meningkatkan pendapatan mereka. Penelitian ini akan dilaksanakan di Wilayah Pesisir Kecamatan Mandolang Kabupaten Minahasa pada tahun 2017 sejak di tandatangani kontrak kerja dengan LPPM. Metode dalam penelitian ini adalah metode purposive sampling. Sumber data adalah data primer dan data sekunder. Introduction:The Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health (CADTH) Common Drug Review and pan-Canadian Oncology Drug Review programs incorporate perspectives and experiences from patients and family members who might be affected by the resulting funding recommendation. Perspectives are provided by patient groups who use different approaches to gather patient input.Methods:We analyzed a random sample of ninety-three patient input submissions, drawn from a sampling frame of 532 submissions given to CADTH between June 2010 and June 2016. We looked at how groups described their information gathering methods in the original submissions or the published Clinical Guidance Reports.Results:Approaches were categorized according to whether they involved primary (n = 86) or secondary data collection (n = 130) and further sub categorized according to how data was collected. Primary data included: personal experiences, as described by the submission's author (n = 16); surveys conducted specifically for the submission (n=34); and new interviews of patients and family members on disease and drug experiences (n = 36). Half (forty-seven of ninety-three) of the patient input submissions included experiences of one or more patients who had received the drug under review. Secondary data included: published literature (n = 31); existing surveys (n = 27); past conversations with patients and family members (n = 36); experiences of patient group staff interacting with patients and family members (n = 19); and advice from clinical experts (n = 17). Many patient input submissions (sixty-eight out of ninety-three) reported multiple approaches to collect data. Use of two approaches was most common (thirty-seven out of ninety-three) with five or six approaches used in three of ninety-three submissions.Conclusions:Despite resource and timing challenges, many patient groups gather primary data to share with CADTH and find individuals with experience of the drug under review.

A number of new seed entrepreneurs were established in Kenya, however, the majority of them fail to achieve the required business growth and competiveness. As a result, they remain small and producing less quantities of seed compared to the few large seed companies in the same market. This study evaluated the influence of product quality on organizational performance of seed maize companies in Kenya. The study adopted a cross-sectional survey research design to collect data from the target population which comprised of seed maize companies in Kenya. The sampling frame of the study was the registered seed maize companies at the Seed Trade Association of Kenya which was the unit of analysis while the respondents were the managerial employees within the seed companies and key seed experts in Kenya. Primary data was obtained by administering questionnaires to four employees within each seed company. The four employees were randomly selected from the production, marketing, finance and warehousing departments. The key seed experts were selected through snow balling and judgment technique. Interviews were conducted with the selected seed experts. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS software. Factor analysis was done to establish the appropriateness of the questionnaire constructs. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used. Inferential statistics included the use of bivariate analysis and the study used the Pearson correlation coefficient. The study also ran a multiple regression model in order to establish the effect of product quality on organizational performance of seed maize companies. Results indicated that the original source of seed can affect product credibility and sales, seed certification standards influenced product credibility and sales, characteristics of seed varieties affect product performance and use of hotlines to report seed failure influences the credibility of the seed and the distributor. The study concludes that managers can increase profitability by putting in place appropriate quality management systems (QMS) and product quality standardization of seeds produced to ensure high quality seed. The study recommends that the management of seed companies should ensure they embark on improving the product quality of seeds produced so as to meet customer requirements and enhance the firm’s performance. This can be achieved by implementing appropriate QMS, securing contracts with large farmers who have irrigation facilities to guarantee adequate seed fields isolation, high productivity and quality seed production.

We investigate trends in regional cost competitiveness in China's four regions (Coastal, Northeast, Interior and West) over the past thirty-five years. We find that the Coastal region lost its initial cost competitiveness as its higher relative labour productivity (RLP) was offset by rapidly rising relative nominal labour costs (RNLC) due to rising wages. The Northeastern region still has cost advantages in the traditional Manufacturing sector. The Interior and West regions improved their competitiveness in most industries due to low RNLCs. There is convergence of relative unit labour cost (RULC) in all industries before 1995, but only in Finance after 1995. However there is convergence in RLP in five industries in 1978–95 and 1995–2009, offering prospects for robust growth for China into the future.

The purpose of the study was to assess how budgets influences performance of research projects of public universities in Coast region, Kenya. The study used a pragmatism paradigm. A descriptive survey and correlation research design were adopted. A targeted population of 1110 academic and non-academic employees for the two universities were used for this study. A sample of 285; consisting of 173 from Technical University of Mombasa and 112 from Pwani University was employed through proportionate and simple random sampling to obtain a representative sample. Primary data collection was done by use of interview guide and open and close ended questionnaires. A pilot test was conducted at University of Nairobi main campus as it would provide a representation of the study to test data collections tools reliability and validity. Data analysis was by inferential and descriptive statistics; mean, frequencies, percentages and standard deviation. Shapiro-Wilk Test was employed to establish whether data was normally distributed or not and adjustments were made to make the data normal. Durbin Watson method was also used to test autocorrelation of the variables. The findings established that budget influences performance of research projects with a composite mean of 3.93 and standard deviation of 0.747. Budget had a positive strong correlation at 0.89. The data also established a positive relationship amongst budget on performance of research projects in public universities. Further studies can be done on other monitoring and evaluation tools to ascertain which is most appropriate for monitoring and evaluation tool. Further studies should be conducted in other parastatals.

This research was carried out to assess the impact of cyclone on livelihood pattern in Pirojpur district, Bangladesh during January to June, 2017. The study was both qualitative and quantitative type. The primary data were collected using randomly sampling method (42+42+42=126 respondents) from Tushkhali, Bhitabaria and Pattashi villages of Pirojpur district. The secondary data were collected from different journals, articles, books, official documents, thesis papers and also daily newspapers etc. From the study it was observed that monthly income of  middle (4001-8000 tk) and high (8001-above tk) income groups ware decreased by 5% and 0.92% respectively while low income people (1-4000 tk) was increased due to decrease of production after Sidr. On the other hand, expenditure ability of low and middle income groups was decreased. Sidr has created a great impact on human health, livestock, fisheries, food habit, crop production and occupation pattern of the affected people. Respondent’s houses were damaged partially (66.78%), 33.22% completely and cultivated land 28.57 % completely by Sidr in study area. Respondents of the study area said that the production of rice (8%), chili (12%), and vegetables (11%) were reduced due to saline water entrance into the crop field after Sidr. Affected people were migrated (temporary 23.10%, local 25% and internal 26.10%) from Pirojpur to Dhaka (53%), Pirojpur to other places (47%) on the post Sidr due to loss of houses, shelters, cultivated land and lack of job opportunity. Among all factors of temporary migration, water logging was the first reason of migrating people of the study area.

The majority of soybean supply is fulfilled by importation and the import of soybean tends to increase. The dependency of Indonesia on imported soybean indeed becomes a serious issue in maintaining food security and local production of soybean is low and quite decreasing. The low domestic soybean production might be caused by the inappropriate used of inputs. Many cases found in the field are the inefficient uses of input factors. The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors influencing the soybean production and to analyze the optimal level of input use in soybean production. The study was conducted in the Sukahurip Village, Pangatikan Sub-District, Garut District, West Java in July 2018. The research method used was a survey method. The data used consisted of primary and secondary data. Primary data were obtained from samples of soybean farmers and samples of farmers were taken by a simple random sampling. The data were analyzed by Cobb Douglass`s Production function (to analyze factors affecting soybean production) and the NPM that was equal to BKM formula was used to determine the optimal level of inputs use. Factors influencing soybean production are land and seeds. Land use, seeds, and ZA fertilizer have not been used efficiently because of the limited land use and the use of substandard inputs. The addition of inputs to the optimal level is 1.36 hectares of land use and 52.7 kg of seeds that will maximize the profits. Keywords: efficiency, input, optimal, production, soybean

Demak Regency is one of the regencies in the coastal region north of Central Java, which has a abrasion. The coastal area of Surodadi, Sayung Subdistrict, Demak Regency is one of the areas that experienced severe abrasion. The purpose of this study is to analyze the coastal dynamics that occur and design appropriate conservation and rehabilitation systems to reduce the impact of abrasion and coastal protection. This study uses primary data carried out at 2016. The analyzes carried out were wind, wave, tidal analysis, shoreline changes and analysis of recommendation structures. The protection scenorio plan uses two alternative structures namely breakwater and seawall. Analysis using a breakwater indicates that the results of sedimentation due to the structure are unsatisfactory. After 10 years, the breakwater produces ± 100 m sedimentation from the initial coastline. The modeling results show that the seawall can prevent further abrasion in the study site even if it does not cause sedimentation (except on the coastline that juts into the mainland).
