The study was conducted at the farm of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Gazipur during the period of November to December, 2010 to enhance the production of red amaranth (cv: BARI lal shak 1) through the determination of nutrient accumulations and their uptake by optimizing the appropriate levels of nitrogen (N) from urea. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) comprising six treatments with four replicate each. There were altogether six levels of N viz. N0 (0 kg N ha-1), N50 (50 kg N ha-1), N75 (75 kg N ha-1), N100 (100 kg N ha-1), N125 (125 kg N ha-1) and N150 (150 kg N ha-1), respectively. P, K and S were applied from TSP, MoP and gypsum @ 23, 17 and 4 kg ha-1, respectively. Results revealed that different levels of N significantly influenced the nutrient accumulation and their uptake by red amaranth. Highest nutrient contents in most of the cases were observed when N was applied @ 150 kg ha-1 which was identical with the treatment N100 and the lowest contents were found in N0 treatment. Nutrient uptake followed similar trend like nutrient accumulation. The over result suggests that N @ 150 kg N ha-1 can be applied to boost up the production of red amaranth cv: BARI lal shak 1 under the agro-climatic conditions of the study area. The study aimed to determine the effects of different levels of phosphorous and zinc fertilizers on the yield and nutrient uptake of maize (Zea mays L.) The experiments were  conducted in a factorial experiment under Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) to determine the effect of P and Zn applications on TZL white composite improved variety            of maize. Four levels of phosphorus (0, 10, 20 and 30 kg P ha-1) and three levels of zinc (0, 5 and 10kg Zn ha-1) were applied on experimental plots of 4.5m x 5m replicated thrice.  The results shows no significant differences in both the  years however, highest mean values of 2327.5 kg ha-1  and 2191.5 kg ha-1 was recorded at 20 kg P ha-1 and 10 kg Zn ha-1 Application of P and Zn at different rates increases their uptake in the stover with highest values of 22.57 mg -1 kg  and 7.8 mg -1 kg  in 2018  at 30 kg Pha-1 and 18.40 mg -1 kg  and 5.21 mg -1 kg  at 20 kg Pha-1  in 2019. While 26.54 mg -1 kg and 21.85 mg -1 kg in 2018 at 10 kg Znha-1 and 6.76 mg -1 kg and 5.27 mg -1 kg in 2019 with 0 kg Znha-1 respectively. It is therefore recommended the best results of the application of 30kg P ha-1 and 10 kg Zn ha -1 should be adopted for optimum yield of maize.

Potassium is the key element for mungbean (Vigna radiata L.) productivity. The study was carried out to understand the effects of potassium (K) on mungbean productivity, quality, nutrient content and nutrient uptake and how this element can help to manage soil fertility.Therefore, an experiment was conducted during two consecutive years 2016 and 2017. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design considering six treatments with thrice replicates. The treatments were T1 = Control, T2 = 30 kg K ha-1, T3= 40 kg K ha-1, T4= 50 kg K ha-1, T5= 60 kg K ha-1 and T6= 70 kg K ha-1 along with the blanket dose of N15P20S10Zn2B1.5 kg ha-1. Results revealed that application of different levels of potassium showed significant effects on the plant height, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod and thousand seed weight which were influenced to obtain higher yield of mungbean. The highest average seed yield (1476 kg ha-1) and highest yield increment (39.5%) of mungbean were produced from the treatment T5. Most of the cases the highest nutrient (N, P, K, S, Zn and B) content was obtained in T5 treatment.The highest K uptake by mungbean, maximum nodulation, the highest protein content in seed and maximum apparent K recovery efficiency (54.8%) were, however, recorded from the treatment receiving of 60kg K ha-1. It was concluded that proper use of K with other nutrients facilitated to improve the productivity and quality of mungbean and also K played a significant role in maintaining soil fertility.

This work aimed, to evaluate the structural behavior of Oxisols based on the least limiting water range (LLWR) and establish relations with corn crop. The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design with five treatments and four replications. Soil samples collected at the layer of 0-0.20 m depth in a Haplustox (LVd) and an Eutrustox (LVef) were used. The compaction treatments consisted of T0= no additional compaction; T1 and T2= two and four passes with a 4 t tractor, respectively; T3 and T4 = two and four passes with a 10 t tractor, respectively. The range of LLWR variation in the LVd was the lowest one and varied from 0.01 to 0.04 m3 m-3, whereas in the LVef varied from 0.03 to 0.13 m3 m-3 for the critical soil penetration resistance (PRc) of 2 MPa. It was observed that critical bulk density (BDc) values were 1.76 and 1.40 Mg m-3 in the LVd and the LVef, respectively. The highest frequency of bulk density (BC ≥ BDc) occurred from the T1 to T4 (LVd) and from the T2 to T4, however, a reduction in corn yield was not observed. The determination of the LLWR was efficient and complementary for identifying more favorable or more impeditive conditions to compaction in the LVef for the corn crop development in relation to the LVd.

AbstractSowing dates and varieties affect the productivity of maize. A field experiment was conducted to find out the response of maize hybrids to sowing dates on growth and productivity of maize in spring season at Lamahi, Dang in 2019. The experiment was laid out in two factor factorial Randomized Complete Block Design with four replications. The treatment consisted of combination of three different sowing dates (February 1, February12 and February 23) and two maize varieties (Arun-2 i.e. OPV and hybrid Bioseed-9220).The result revealed that earlier planting on February 1 produced the highest yield (8265 Kg ha-1) which was significantly superior than latter planting of February 12(6099 kg ha-1)and February 23 (5934 kg ha-1).The higher yield in earlier planting was due to significantly higher no of kernel per ear, non-significant but higher number of cob per unit area, thousand grain weight. Similarly, Bioseed 9220 produced higher yield (7798 kg ha-1) compared to Arun-2 (5,734 kg ha-1). The higher yield of hybrid Bioseed 9220 was because of higher number of cob per unit area harvested and more number of kernel per cob. Therefore, earlier planting with hybrid maize is recommended in spring season of Dang and locations with similar climatic conditions for higher productivity of maize.

Background: Nutritional security overrides food security and the present day agriculture focusses more on sustainable and regenerative agriculture in which use of organic inputs assumes prime significance. The search for viable alternatives to the chemical sources of nutrients demands production of the organic nutrient inputs in large quantities. Organic nutrition is expensive on account of the low nutrient contents and large quantum needed and hence unless produced in situ, turn out to be highly expensive. Organic wastes in the form of crop residues are available in plenty in agricultural fields. Tree leaf litter is another biowaste considered as menace under off farm situations. Rapid resource recycling techniques offer immense potential for the safe disposal of the litter and conversion to quality manures. In this background an experiment was conducted to assess the efficacy of litter composts as nitrogen sources in vegetable cow pea (Vigna unguiculata subsp. unguiculata) in terms of the agronomic efficiencies and nutrient uptake. Methods: The field experiment was conducted in College of Agriculture, Vellayani, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala Agricultural University during December 2018 to March 2019 in randomized block design with three replications. The treatments included the compost of the two tree species litter prepared by composting with different decomposer organisms and additives and enriched with the biofertilizer, PGPR Mix I. Result: The results of the experiment revealed the highest vegetable yields (7.80 t ha-1) in the treatment involving mango leaf litter composted with glyricidia leaves and earthworms on par with Kerala Agricultural University package of practices recommendation for cowpea and it was 2.7 times that in absolute control. The total nutrient uptake was the highest with mango litter co-composted with poultry manure as nutrient input. Agronomy efficiency indices, in terms of nitrogen were significantly superior for the treatments including mango litter composts and hence prove a suitable nutrient input in vegetable cowpea cultivation.

Determination of competitive relationships among plant species requires appropriate experimental designs and method of analysis. The hypothesis of this research was that two species growing in coexistence show different growth and development due to their relative competitiveness. This research aims to measure the relative competitiveness of wheat crop compared to Alexandergrass by the interpretation of plant density and proportional effects using replacement series experiments. Monocultures were cultivated in densities of 1, 3, 5, 10 and 15 plants per pot and analyzed by regression of dry mass data. Mixture experiment was cultivated in wheat:Alexandergrass proportions of 0:6, 1:5, 2:4, 3:3, 4:2, 5:1 and 6:0 plants per pot and analyzed by graphical interpretation of growth and production characteristics. Both experiments were carried out in randomized complete block design with four replicates. Alexandergrass was more sensitive to intraspecific competition than wheat. Alexandergrass was lightly more competitive than wheat. Number and weight of spikes and number of tillers were the wheat characteristics more affected by Alexandergrass interference.

Maize hybrids have different levels of tolerance to the herbicide nicosulfuron, depending on the dose, the environment, the phenological stage of the plant and the timing of nitrogen fertilization, and phytotoxic effects can occur without proper management. There is also limited information on the selectivity of current genetically modified hybrids for other recommended herbicides, such as tembotrione. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of herbicides (tembotrione and nicosulfuron) and the timing of nitrogen fertilization on the yield of maize hybrids. The experimental design was a randomized block design, in a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement, with 4 replicates. The treatments consisted of four treatments [weeding; nicosulfuron + atrazine (20 and 32 + 1250 g ha-1 ai) and tembotrione + atrazine (75.6 + 1250 g ha-1 ai)] and two nitrogen fertilization times (0 and 7 days after application). Maize hybrids P30F53 Leptra, DKB 230PRO3 and KWS 9004PRO2 were assessed in two growing seasons (1st and 2nd harvest) during the 2016/2017 growing season. The percentages of weed control; phytotoxicity at 7, 14 and 21 days after application (DAA); plant height; number of rows per ear; and yield at harvest were evaluated. All herbicides were more effective in controlling weeds at the 1st harvest because of favourable climatic conditions. Nitrogen fertilization can be carried out on the same day as the application of the herbicides nicosulfuron and tembotrione with no reduction in yield for the hybrids P30F53 Leptra, DKB 230PRO3 and KWS 9004PRO2.

Abstract The objective of this study was to determinate the effects of narasin on carcass characteristics of lambs fed a diet containing different levels. Forty-four lambs were allotted in a randomized complete block design, defined by initial body weight (BW), in a 2x2 factorial arrangement. The first factor was forage (coastcross hay) inclusion (10 or 20%, DM basis) and the second factor was narasin (0 or 13 ppm). The experimental diets were isonitrogenous (17.4%, DM basis). The experiment lasted 112 days. At the end of the experiment, the lambs were slaughtered to evaluate the carcass characteristics and meat composition. Data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure of SAS and the LSMEANS option was used to obtain the means. The effects were considered significant when P < 0.05. There was no interaction between forage levels and narasin inclusion. The experimental diets did not affect the slaughter BW (54.8 ± 1.6 kg), hot carcass weight (29.3 ± 0.96 kg), dressing percentage (53.5 ± 0.67%) and LM area (18.8 ± 0.89 cm2). The inclusion of narasin increased 12th-rib fat (2.10 vs 2.75 mm; P < 0.01) and BW thickness (16.9 vs 20.2 mm; P < 0.01). The inclusion of 20% of hay decreased BW thickness (19.21 vs 17.9 mm; P = 0.03). The experimental diets did not affect the moisture (74.2 ± 0.53%) and ash content in meat (1.27 ± 0.04%). Narasin inclusion increased the fat (2.81 vs 3.62%; P < 0.01) and decreased the CP (21.3 vs 20.7%; P = 0.02) in meat composition. The inclusion of 10% of hay increased the fat in meat (3.5 vs 2.9%; P = 0.03), however, did not affect the CP content. In conclusion, the narasin inclusion and levels of hay improve the carcass characteristics and change the meat composition.

Aims: To introduce brachiaria grasses in Meru and Embu Counties to increase the range of fodder/forage varieties available to smallholders through the use of climate-smart brachiaria grasses for increased income. The project also aimed at identifying the best brachiaria varieties suitable for the target Agro-Ecological ones through evaluation by the farmers and yield assessment. Study Design:  Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) Place and Duration of Study: The study was carried out in Embu and Meru Counties during the short rains of 2015. Methodology: Three varieties of brachiaria were introduced in the short rains of 2015 in KALRO Embu, Geeto Igoji in Meru, and Embu County. These were Brachiaria decumbense -Cultivar Basilisk, Brachiaria brizantha- Cultivar BRS Piata and Brachiaria brizantha- Cultivar Toledo. Plots of 5x5m were planted and replicated three times using Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) to increase the range of fodder/forage varieties available to smallholder and assess the yield and acceptability of the different brachiaria grasses varieties. The three varieties were planted in the mega demonstration sites. The grass performance was analyzed through pairwise ranking and the grass with the best attributes was selected. Yield data was also collected. Results: After ranking, the results indicated that the rate of growth and the amount of biomass as the most important attributes followed by the animals' response after feeding and the rate of rejuvenation after harvesting respectively. Using the attributes, the group members concluded that Brachiaria decumbense- Cultivar basilisk was the best followed by brachiaria brizantha- Cultivar piata and finally brachiaria brizantha- Cultivar Toledo. Conclusion: In conclusion, based on the attributes, the best brachiaria varieties for use in Embu and Meru Countries are Brachiaria decumbense –Cultivar Basilisk and Brachiaria brizantha- Cultivar Toledo. Based on yield, Brachiaria brizantha- Cultivar Toledo is the best in Embu County while Brachiaria brizantha- Cultivar Basilisk is the best in Meru County.

Peanut (Arachis hypogaea)  is commonly grown during the dry season and most farmers used the native variety. Growth retardants such as paclobutrazol (PBZ) was found to increase yield of some important crops. A study was conducted to determine the effect of different levels of paclobutrazol on the peanut yield of Asha and Farmers’ variety during the wet season. The experimental area was laid out using Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) factorial. Treatments were replicated thrice. Data were analyzed by Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and  the Honest Significant Difference (HSD) test was used to compare treatment means. The increasing level of PBZ increased the number of pods of Asha by 29.97% while the most number of seeds was obtained from farmers’ variety. Applied PBZ Asha at 150mg/L recorded the highest shelling percentage that is 16.19% higher when compared to the untreated. Paclobutrazol application significantly increased seed yield of Asha and farmers’ variety by 43.34% and 20.86% at 150mg/L and 75mg/L, respectively. The increase in yield was due to the observed reduction in plant height and stem growth which possibly enhanced assimilate partitioning to pods. Asha applied with PBZ at 150mg/L obtained the highest seed yield of 4.2 tons/ha. Keywords— Agriculture, yield, peanut, paclobutrazol, experimental design, Pampanga, Philippines
