Concentration of mercury was investigated in the flesh and shell of two species of benthic mollusc, Crassostrea gasar and Tympanotonus fuscatus and in water and sediment from Makoko Creek, adjacent to the Lagos Lagoon between January to September 2019. Values obtained for physicochemical parameters in Makoko Creek (water temperature- 28.92±0.1°C; pH- 7.73±0.02; salinity- 14.23±0.05 ppt; dissolved oxygen- 5.34±0.02 mg/l; biological oxygen demand- 7.780±0.1 mg/l and chemical oxygen demand- 12.34±0.02 mg/l) were within the acceptable levels for survival, metabolism and physiology of aquatic organism. The concentration of mercury followed decreasing order as sediment >water >flesh >shell across locations for both species. For all the tested samples of C. gasar and T. fuscatus, biowater accumulation factor in flesh and shell were higher than those of bio-sediment accumulation factor. The coefficients of variance (CV %) in shells were lower than those of the flesh for both investigated mollusc species. It was shown that mercury contents of flesh or shells of C. gasar and T. fuscatu are directly affected by those of water and bottom sediment. J. Bio-Sci. 29(1): 143-151, 2021 (June)

The main reasons which caused the water pollution in canals, especially in Khlong Prem Prachakorn, are untreated, and improperly treated household, accumulation from flood situation in Bangkok. Soil sediment accumulation in canal contain many types of organic compounds. However, contaminant that causes an increase health risk is the mostly concern. This research was performed to investigate the organic compounds in household wastewater removal under biodegradation, and adsorption mechanisms by using soil sediment taken from Khlong Prem Prachakorn, Bangkok, Thailand. For the adsorption experiment, inactivated sludge was used for determining adsorption capacity of soil sediment. The samples were slowly mixed at 30 rpm and taken at constant time intervals for the determination of biological oxygen demand (BOD), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction. The influent BOD, and COD concentration were found 63 mg/l, and 354 mg/l, respectively. The results indicated that the concentration of BOD, and COD were decreasing rapidly by both biodegradation and adsorption mechanisms within 12 h. In this research, the biological activity by microorganisms in soil sediment as an important role and helped to remove organic compound in household wastewater.

Research was held in the estuary of the river Bach Dang (Dongbay community, Rakhtay district, Hai Phong, Vietnam) in June, 2012 - May, 2013. Concentration of lead was studied in water, suspended solids and bottom sediment. Clam beach (natural breeding environment of Meretrix lyrata ) was inspected regularly, every month. Water samples were taken 6 times from the bottom layer 10 cm down the bottom, once per 3 hours in each of 12 investigated zones. Bottom sediment samples were taken at the depth 2 cm. The findings show that lead accumulates mainly in suspended solids (23.3 mg/kg) and in bottom sediment (14.31 mg/kg), in water it is in small quantities (0.003 mg/kg). Analysis of bottom sediment samples taken in different places showed that they have even leadcontent, lead is distributed uniformly, localization of contaminations is not found. The results obtained can be assumed as the basis for investigating lead accumulation and its excretion by clam Meretrix lyrata organisms in the natural habitat.

Abstract The purpose of the paper was to assess the changes in the concentration of selected metals in the bottom sediment and interstitial water of the River Chotla in northwest Poland. The research was conducted on the river section flowing through Zaspy Małe and a salmonid fish breeding farm. Samples of water and bottom sediment were taken in four control and measurement points, located above and below the village and on a backwater above the trouteries and below the fish breeding ponds. The pH and the concentration of the metals potassium, iron, calcium, manganese and zinc were determined in the water and sediment samples. The lowest concentrations of the metals were found in the samples collected above and below Zaspy Małe, while the highest concentrations of metals in the water and sediment were found in the samples taken in the backwater, above the fish breeding ponds. Exceptions were calcium and potassium, with the highest concentrations of metals in the water being found in the samples taken below the fish breeding ponds. The content of metals in sediments of the analysed section of the River Chotla was mainly determined by the content of organic matter, which varied as it is dependent on water accumulation processes and the operation of nearby fishery facilities. The slightly alkaline pH facilitated long-lasting accumulation of metals in sediments.

The long-term practice of regulatory standards for recoding of river bed evolutions and the transport mechanism of bottom riverbed-building sediments proves reliability of the adopted calculations for design and construction of underwater crossings of main pipelines through majority of medium and large rivers of Russia. However, in respect of the rivers which are «overloaded» with bottom sediments, the conventional calculation methods of parameters of the underwater pipeline trench, considering sediment accumulation, are insufficient and require additional solutions. This problem was identified during construction of the underwater crossing of the ESPO-II pipeline system across the Amur River and is associated with hydromorphological features, specifics of the water regime and significant flow rate of bottom sediments typical for this water body. This article presents an improved technology for developing an underwater trench by establishment of so-called false trenches in the areas with maximum specific flowrate of bottom sediment. Based on the example of construction of the underwater crossing of the reserve pipeline leg, the difficulties related to design and construction of a pipeline with significant amount of bottom sediment transport are considered, risks of construction under these conditions are analyzed, planning and implementation of a technical solution for establishment of false trenches for intercepting bottom sediment are described.

A wastewater treatment plant (WTP) in a super-intensive shrimp farm is used to reduce organic matters contained in super-intensive shrimp farm effluent. Through the WTP, the waste water from shrimp facilities can safely and harmlessly be released to the receiving environments. The aims of this study were to evaluate the design and performance of a WTP in reconditioning waste water released from a super-intensive shrimp farm prior to release to water bodies. The WTP was made of a series of sedimentation pond, two aeration ponds, and one reservoir or equalitation pond. The tilapia fish and seaweed, Gracilaria sp., were stocked in the equalitation pond where the seaweed was cultured using long line method; these organisms were used as bio-control. Water samples were collected fortnightly during 105 days of culturing duration from the WTP inlet, outlet of sedimentation pond or at inlet of the first aeration pond; outlet of the first aeration pond or inlet of the second aeration pond, outlet of the second aeration pond or inlet of equalitation pond and the outlet of equalitation pond. The measured variables were total suspended solid (TSS), total ammonia nitrogen (TAN), nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, total organic matters (TOM), and five days biological oxygen demand (BOD5). The evaluated technical performances of the plant were its size and volume; volume and retention time of effluent, efficiency of WTP performance and volume ratios of the WTP and total volume of shrimp pond. The results of the study indicated that the WTP was able to reduce concentrations of nutrients and solids in effluent by 53.1%-99.4% of efficiency. However, its capacity need to be increased due to reducing concentrations of TOM. The WTP was highly efficient in reducing the concentrations of TSS, TAN, nitrite, total N, and phosphate. The volume ratios between the plant and pond waters were 30:70 with minimum retention time five which days could be proposed for wastewater treatment pond for super-intensive shrimp ponds.

In the present study an attempt has been made to evaluate water quality and related density of Cladocerans for a period of one year, October 2015 to September 2016. Water quality parameters such as temperature, PH, total dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand, total alkalinity, total hardness, chlorides, phosphates, and nitrates are presented here to relate with the abundance of Cladocerans. The Cladoceran abundance reflects the eutrophic nature of the Chakki talab.
