This study investigated environmental and socio-economic impacts of brick fields at Bagatipara upazila of Natore district, Bangladesh. A questionnaire survey was conducted at selected community members living at or near brick field areas with aim to assess impacts of brick fields on air, water, soil, vegetation as well as socio-economic conditions. Findings of this study were based on randomly selected respondents’ perception on change of any resource or condition. Crop loss, decreased soil fertility and subsequent reductions in crop production were reported. Trees around brickfields were dusted badly and water quality of nearby water bodies deteriorated because of emerged dust and ash from brick fields. Noticeable negative impacts on aquaculture were found. Except few, majority of the respondents were suffering from various diseases like eye irritation, skin diseases and respiratory problems. Despite creating work opportunities for local people, brick fields of the study area adversely affected environment and social economy.J. Environ. Sci. & Natural Resources, 9(2): 31-34 2016

Surface water supplies are gradually becoming short in arid and semi-arid regions of the world. Thus, assessment of groundwater quality for crop use appears to be very essential for management and utilization of precious natural water resources. This study reports the water quality of 52 hand pumps and one tubewell located in the most remote areas of desert region, viz. Islamkot and Mithi talukas of district Tharparkar. The water samples were collected during April 2016 (just before the start of rainy season). The water samples were analyzed for EC (Electrical Conductivity), pH, CO32-, HCO3-, Cl-, Ca2+, Mg2+ and Na+ concentration. The SAR (Sodium Adsorption Ratio) and RSC (Residual Sodium Carbonates) were estimated using their respective formula. The categorization of water samples based on their soluble salt content clearly revealed that the water bodies of majority (65%) of areas were hazardous, while 25% areas were marginal. Thus, only 11% water samples of the area under study had useable irrigation water. Because of SAR and RSC the majority (89 and 77%, respectively) of water samples were found to be free from the sodicity hazard. The study concluded that salinity, and not sodicity was the major threat to the area under irrigation with these water bodies. It is, therefore, suggested that the salinity tolerant crops and their genotypes may be used in this area to sustain crop production.

Management of solid wastes is a grave concern because of its associated significant negative impacts on quality of the environs. Accretion and putrefaction of solid wastes have potent hazardous effects on biotic and abiotic factors of the environment including human beings. Unmanaged solid wastes especially organic in nature add efficient quantity of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. For dealing with wastes purely organic in nature, there is a need of an adequate waste management technology to reduce the quantity of organic waste being disposed of traditionally. Composting is an environmentally sound and sustainable approach to manage biodegradable fractions of solid waste. It has received considerable attention in the last few decades because of its potential of redressing the environmental pollution concerns associated with other waste disposal methods. This chapter is aimed to review supremacy of composting over other waste disposal methods.

The main economic activity in the Jiu Valley is mining, which provides to the society an important content of mineral raw  materials required for the development and progress, representing  the main activity in producing the value chain. The majority of the  mining activities and other economic activities deployed along the  basin of the East Jiu generates both negative environmental impacts (more or less serious) and positive impacts such as those  related to employment, staff training, creating infrastructures etc. In  the most cases, the negative impacts of the human activities can  be much improved up to a point or even eliminated through the  remedial measures, particularly through environmental rehabilitation of the affected areas. But if a watercourse is strongly  affected by sediments generated by the human activity still on the  top side, the pollution will be  intensifed much more on the bottom  side with signifiant changes on the aquatic ecosystems and with an  impossibility of consumption and the use of the water resources by  the riparian population. The main objective of this paper consists of the identification and the description of all human activities  presented along the East Jiu and the analayses of the negative  influence exerted on the river water quality. To compare the water  quality of the East Jiu and monitoring its variations in time, it was  used the method water quality index (WQI), having the straight  purpose of aggregating individual indicators (expressed in physical units) in a unique water quality index.

Studies focused on limnology and quality of water bodies are essential to produce data that support the planning and management, diagnose the current situation and propose measures to minimize the possible negative impacts on water resources. The Tereza Botas creek drains the town of Poconé-MT, situated in the Pantanal border. In this sense, the objective of this study was to verify the variations in limnological characteristics along the longitudinal gradient and evaluate the water quality of the Tereza Botas watershed, identifying the impacts from anthropogenic activities of this important Pantanal watershed. Four sampling points along the longitudinal gradient of the water stream have been defined, and physical, chemical and microbiological variables were analyzed. The results indicated that the changes in limnological and water quality derive from the riparian vegetation removal, erosion and discharge of sewage in natura. In addition, high density of E. coli was observed in most of the sampled points, demonstrating that the lack of proper sanitation as well as the presence of rudimentary cesspit are negatively affecting water quality in the headwaters region.

Dr. João Penido dam is the main reservoir for water supply of Juiz de Fora (MG). The forms of land use and occupation have produced negative impacts on the aquatic ecosystem. The general objective of this study was to assess the anthropogenic impact on water quality of the watershed. To this was done to characterize the quality of its waters and the parameters measured were compared with CONAMA Resolution 357/2005. It was also calculated the Water Quality Index (WQI) and the Trophic State Index (TSI). The monitoring tool has proved essential in actions involving preservation of the watershed.

Jatiluhur Reservoir is one of the largest reservoirs in West Java which has many functions, one of which is for aquaculture with the KJA system. But along with the development of KJA activity in the Jatiluhur Reservoir it has become one of the factors causing the decline in water quality of the Jatiluhur Reservoir. Therefore the Purwakarta Regency government made a program called Operation Jatiluhur Jernih Lake through the Decree of the Regent of Purwakarta No.523.31.05 / Kep.286-DLH / 2017.  This program had a purpose to curb a number of cageculture in Jatiluhur Dam. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of the program as an effort to save the condition of reservoir water and to analyze the impact of the program to the sosio-economic condition of the farmer. The methode that used in this study was quantitavie methode based on the effectivity value from the quisioner and the qualitative method by analyzing data from interview. the results of this study indicate that the Jatiluhur Lake Operations program is running quite effectively with the acquisition of a score of 60.37%, which means this program has a pretty good value in efforts to save the water conditions of the Jatiluhur reservoir. But on the other hand this program has a significant impact, especially on the socio-economic conditions of farmers such as decreasing income levels, rising potential for unemployment, increasing levels of difficulty in fulfilling the needs of life, and also reducing the supply of fish in the Jatiluhur Reservoir

Abstract Illegal mining and inappropriate use of agrochemicals have exacerbated surface water pollution in Ghana. The quality of water has changed, and knowledge of their current condition is important for formulating policies to conserve the country's water bodies. This study assessed the quality of surface waters in Ghana's Pra River Basin. A survey of 344 local farmers randomly sampled was conducted and a physicochemical analysis of 33 water samples collected from 25 rivers in the basin. Boreholes are the main source of drinking water for 85% of farmers, and they assessed water quality by its appearance. Rainwater provides over 50% of the water needed by the respondents for domestic use. River water was mainly used for crop production and only secondarily for domestic use. At more than 80% of the sampled sites, pH, Fe and P were above the WHO recommended values, while Pb was exceeded at 30% of the sites. Cu, Hg, As and Fe were above permissible levels for irrigation, especially near the mining areas. The poor quality of river water makes it unusable despite its availability. A more effective and efficient land-use policy focusing on buffer zone protection is recommended to minimise water quality degradation in the basin.

Purpose: to assess the quality of water in water bodies of the Volga-Akhtuba floodplain from an ecological viewpoint, taking into account the modern regulatory framework in the field of environmental protection. Materials and Methods. To assess the quality of natural waters from an ecological viewpoint, a complex indicator calculated by basic analyte markers that characterize typical negative impacts was used. The following hydrochemical indicators were taken as analyte markers: pH, mineralization (dry residue), suspended solids of natural origin, total iron, total manganese, ammonium (N), nitrites (N), nitrates (N), phosphates (PO4), chemical oxygen demand (COD). Results. The ecological state of water bodies was determined by hydro-chemical indicators of surface waters and bottom sediments using the example of such representative objects as water bodies on the territory of the Volga-Akhtuba floodplain: lakes Peschanoe, Varyuzhka, Zhestkovo, erik Chayka, lakes Beshenoe, Chubatoe, Yamy, erik Shumrovatyy, lake Shirokogorloe. In accordance with the provisions of GOST R 58556-2019 “Assessment of water quality in water bodies from an ecological point of view”, the quality of water from an ecological viewpoint, the degree of quality disturbance and changes in the state of aquatic ecosystems under anthropogenic load have been determined. Conclusions. Petroleum products have been recorded in the water bodies of the Volga-Akhtuba floodplain (lake Varyuzhka, erik Shumrovatyy). The analysis of hydrochemical indicators of water quality and bottom sediments shows that currently the overall level of pollution of the considered water bodies does not reach critical levels of permissible values.

The size of the fly population at the time of Salted Catfish production (SC) is one of theimportant problems that will have an impact on the health and deterioration of fish quality, as well ashaving an impact on socio-economic conditions. Flies are mechanical vectors for the transmission ofdiseases carried through microorganisms Staphylococcus aureus (S.aureus). To deal with this problemproducers use chemical insecticides which are sometimes used at inappropriate dosages, so that they willadversely affect human health and the environment. therefore it is used by Fragrant Pandan Leaves(FPL) which have chemicals as poisons for vectors and safe for humans. This study aims to identify thecontamination of S.aureus bacteria in SC from Penyasawan Village, to analyze the effectiveness of FPLextracts in reducing the number of flies in the process of drying the SC on product acceptance. Usingexperimental research methods, with RAL, it was carried out at the UPTD laboratory for fish diseasesand the water quality of the Kampar Regency Fisheries Service. Data were analyzed using the One-WayANOVA statistical test. The results showed that, for the most part Salted Catfish from PenyasawanVillage is identified contamination of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Pandan Wangi Leaf Extract caneffectively reduce the density of flies that perch during drying of Salted Catfish with the highestconcentration having the greatest resistance to the flies of flies. Salted Catfish soaked in Pandan Wangileaves are in demand by consumers

Understanding water quality used for irrigation and its potential negative impacts on crop growth are important for optimization of crop production. The study involved the assessment of hydro-chemical properties and chemical indices of Owiwi river for irrigation of vegetables from the measured quality parameters and analyzed for important quality indices following standard test procedures. The study revealed that pH of water was acidic in nature resulting in low residual sodium carbonate (RSC) values showing dominance of dissolved CO3, attributed to dissolution of limestone dominant in the study area. The water was regarded as permissible water based on electrical conductivity (EC) and total dissolved solids (TDS), implying non detrimental salinity hazard in the soils. Excessive Na content (> 250 MMg/L) in water reduces the permeability thereby influencing availability of water for the plant usage, obviously associated with low EC and sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) observed in the river water. The excess hardness resulting from high content of calcium and magnesium ions derived from limestone and chalk is undesirable mostly for esthetic reasons like plumbing of irrigation systems. Generally, the water can be classified as good for irrigation of vegetable on the bases of PI, MAR, % Na, SAR and % yield. Keywords: Hydro-chemical, permeability, soil, limestone, yield.
