Studies focused on limnology and quality of water bodies are essential to produce data that support the planning and management, diagnose the current situation and propose measures to minimize the possible negative impacts on water resources. The Tereza Botas creek drains the town of Poconé-MT, situated in the Pantanal border. In this sense, the objective of this study was to verify the variations in limnological characteristics along the longitudinal gradient and evaluate the water quality of the Tereza Botas watershed, identifying the impacts from anthropogenic activities of this important Pantanal watershed. Four sampling points along the longitudinal gradient of the water stream have been defined, and physical, chemical and microbiological variables were analyzed. The results indicated that the changes in limnological and water quality derive from the riparian vegetation removal, erosion and discharge of sewage in natura. In addition, high density of E. coli was observed in most of the sampled points, demonstrating that the lack of proper sanitation as well as the presence of rudimentary cesspit are negatively affecting water quality in the headwaters region.

Landuse alteration is one of the primary causes of global environmental change. Changes in the landuse usually occurred regionally and globally over last few decades and will carry on in the future as well. These activities are highly influenced by anthropogenic activities and have more serious consequences on the quality of water and air. In the present study relationship between land use impact on water and air quality have been reviewed.

The urbanization process through which large urban centers have been passing has drastically affected the availability and especially the quality of water. The Cachoeirinha Invernada Watershed (CIW), located in the municipality of Guarulhos (State of São Paulo, Brazil), includes areas with different land use classes. This paper aims to correlate the spatial and temporal effects of land use and land cover on the water quality of the Cachoeirinha Invernada Watershed. In a period of 12 months and at six sampling points along the watershed, the physicochemical parameters temperature (T), pH, turbidity (TU), total solids (TS), electrical conductivity (EC), total phosphorus (TP), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), as well as microbiological analysis (E. coli) were measured. Water quality was assessed using a modified version (WQIM) of the Water Quality Index (WQI) and the Trophic State Index (TSI). The areas surrounded by urban development presented a marked worsening in water quality, with the downstream point most affected and ranked as ‘POOR’. From the evaluated parameters, what contributed most to water quality degradation of the Cachoeirinha Invernada Watershed (CIW) was E. coli, followed by BOD, and TP, all parameters related to the presence of sewage in the water. The need for the construction of sewerage and waste treatment, protection and recovery of riparian forests, and environmental education regarding waste disposal are necessary to significantly improve the environmental quality of the Cachoeirinha Invernada Watershed.

The quality of water is crucial for the qualification of river beaches. The Cávado River watershed (Northern Portugal) contains five river beaches with a regular and specific mandatory monitorization. The main subject of this research is the evaluation of spatial and temporal water microbiological and physicochemical parameters to assess the water quality improvement and consequently watershed management. The results of monitoring surface water, considering microbiological parameters from the five river beaches (2015/19), and physicochemical parameters from three water points along the Cávado River (2018/19) were considered. The river beaches located upstream of the town of Braga has an “excellent” and “good” quality, while the river beach located downstream shows a lower water quality. The physicochemical water results indicated that there is a progressive degradation of water quality from upstream to downstream of the river, which is associated with the influence of domestic and industrial activities. To improve water quality, continuous monitoring will be necessary, with the implementation of adequate awareness-raising programs and strategic water quality management by the population and local agents.

Purpose: to assess the quality of water in water bodies of the Volga-Akhtuba floodplain from an ecological viewpoint, taking into account the modern regulatory framework in the field of environmental protection. Materials and Methods. To assess the quality of natural waters from an ecological viewpoint, a complex indicator calculated by basic analyte markers that characterize typical negative impacts was used. The following hydrochemical indicators were taken as analyte markers: pH, mineralization (dry residue), suspended solids of natural origin, total iron, total manganese, ammonium (N), nitrites (N), nitrates (N), phosphates (PO4), chemical oxygen demand (COD). Results. The ecological state of water bodies was determined by hydro-chemical indicators of surface waters and bottom sediments using the example of such representative objects as water bodies on the territory of the Volga-Akhtuba floodplain: lakes Peschanoe, Varyuzhka, Zhestkovo, erik Chayka, lakes Beshenoe, Chubatoe, Yamy, erik Shumrovatyy, lake Shirokogorloe. In accordance with the provisions of GOST R 58556-2019 “Assessment of water quality in water bodies from an ecological point of view”, the quality of water from an ecological viewpoint, the degree of quality disturbance and changes in the state of aquatic ecosystems under anthropogenic load have been determined. Conclusions. Petroleum products have been recorded in the water bodies of the Volga-Akhtuba floodplain (lake Varyuzhka, erik Shumrovatyy). The analysis of hydrochemical indicators of water quality and bottom sediments shows that currently the overall level of pollution of the considered water bodies does not reach critical levels of permissible values.

Leachate is a liquid generated by mixing of water with organic and inorganic material found in landfills. This liquid accumulates at the bottom of the landfill and has the potential to percolate through the soil to enter groundwater or other water bodies. Leachate contains various contaminants and toxins that can significantly diminish the quality of water it enters, which can become hazardous to humans and the environment. In this article, the water quality of two towns: Egg Harbor and Middle Township, New Jersey were analyzed and compared. Egg Harbor Township has a landfill located within the town, while the closest landfill to Middle Township is approximately 10 miles away. Water supply for both towns comes from the same aquifer, known as the Kirkwood-Cohansey water table system. The water quality results from community wells within Egg Harbor Township were compared to those of Middle Township. Water quality data for this study is from New Jersey American Water database. Based on the results, the water quality of Egg Harbor Township varies significantly from Middle Township. The levels of contaminants in Egg Harbor Township are much higher compared to Middle Township. Therefore, it can be concluded that communities near landfills, even well monitored and managed ones, are prone to have poorer water quality than those farther away from the landfill.

Sanitary-microbiological and hydrochemical research of rivers flowing into Baikal in the area of Lystvyanka settlement was carried out from 2014 to 2015. It was found out that water quality in the mouths of such rivers as Bolshaya Cheremshanka, Malaya Cheremshanka and Kamenushka fell out of the standards of normative technological document in Russia, as well as abroad (US and Europe) based on such indicators as thermotolerant coliform bacteria (TCB), thermotolerant E. coli, enterococci. The quality of water in the mouths of B. Cheremshanka, M. Cheremshanka, Kamenushka rivers was far from standards of the above mentioned (Russia) by hydrochemical indices such as phosphates (PO43-). In June 2015, the standard by TCB group was exceeded more than 10 times in coastal water of Lake Baikal near B. Cheremshanka River mouth. Thus, the water quality sampled from the river mouths in comparison to river waters sampled above settlement was significantly poor. Moreover, in July 2015 when the number of tourists was maximal, high gradient between amount of fecal bacteria in river mouths compared to the water samples from the upstreams on background stations was found. To stop local damage of the ecosystem in Lystvyanka area the construction of wastewater treatment station here is urgent and reasonable.

The research on Escherichia coli (E. coli) and bacterial pathogens within catfish culture in Buluh Cina Village has been done in August 2015. This study aimed to analyze the quality  of the river water, the abundance of E.coli in the water stream and pathogenic bacteria in catfish and to correlate the quality of the water with an abundance of E. coli and the prevalence of pathogenic bacteria. The location of the study is three observation stations with sampling conducted by three replications. The water quality parameters under investigation were temperature, brightness, pH, DO, Nitrate, Nitrite, Ammonia, Phosphate, TSS and BOD while the indicator for microbiological contamination  is done by testing the abundance  of E. coli in the river water as well as the pathogenic bacteria in catfish. The results  of water quality measurements and testing of E. coli indicate the water quality is still good  with the standard required under Regulation No 82/2001 except ammonia, phosphates, nitrites and E. coli. Ammonia has exceeded the threshold value with the  average  from 0.018 to 0.059 mg/L, the phosphate on the average value of 4,921 to 9,804 mg/L, nitrite  in the average value from 0.015 to 0.068 mg/L and the abundance of E. coli on the value of the average 4,200-5,500 cfu / 100 ml. While the results of testing on pathogenic bacteria found in catfish are Aeromonas sp, Pseudomonas sp, Pasteurella sp and  Edwardsiella sp. The highest prevalence of pathogenic bacteria obtained in Aeromonas sp is equal to 29.63%. In the statistical test toward  chemical parameters of water  measured affects  the abundance of E. coli by 94%. The most significant variable on the water quality parameters affecting the abundance of E. coli is the temperature, TSS, pH, and DO with a correlation coefficient 0.5.

The hydro geochemical features of Neyyar River for a period of one year from May 2015 to April 2016 were analyzed. Six sampling sites were fixed considering physiography and present landuse pattern of the river basin. The residents in the drainage basin are primarily responsible for framing a better landuse and thereby maintain a good water and sediment regime. Geospatial pattern of the present landuse of the study area indicated that the sustainability of this river ecosystem is in danger due to unscientific landuse practices, which is reflected in the river quality as well. The parameters such as hydrogen ion concentration, electrical conductivity, chloride, Biological Oxygen Demand, total hardness and sulphate of river water and Organic Carbon of river bed sediments were analyzed in this study. The overall analysis shows that the highland areas are characterized by better quality of water together with low organic carbon, which is mainly due to better landuse and minimal reclamation. The midland and lowland areas are characterized by poor quality of water with high organic carbon, which is due to high anthropogenic activities and maximum pollutants associated with the region together with the alteration in landuse from a traditional eco-friendly pattern to a severely polluted current pattern.
