Pictures use in an educational setting fits the idiom: old but gold. There have been plenty of studies revealing how good the use of pictures in the classrooms is. Pictures have been long known to have the ability to help motivate, demonstrate, and instruct the students during a learning process. This study is a sort of complement to the phenomenon as it focuses on researching the use of pictures in a classroom. Specifically, it aims at finding out the effectiveness of the use of picture cues in teaching writing. The study belongs to experimental research involving two groups of experiment and control. The eighth-grade students of a private junior high school in Central Java Indonesia are chosen as the subject of the research during 2017/2018 academic year. Employing a sample population technique, the study involves a total number of 56 students who are equally divided into 28 students as the experimental group and 28 students as the control group. The experimental group is taught using picture cues while the control group is taught without picture cues. Pre-test and post-test are used as techniques to collect the data. As for the data analysis technique, it’s done quantitatively applying both descriptive and inferential statistics. The result of the research shows that there is a significant difference in the students’ writing ability between those taught using picture cues and those who are not. This can be seen from the difference in the mean score between them. The result of the pre-test shows that at the beginning, both experimental and control groups have slightly different ability in writing with the mean scores 51.32 and 47.86 respectively. Meanwhile, the result of the post-test indicates an obvious difference between them in which the experimental group gains 65.75 as its mean score and the control group gets 59.14. Furthermore, the application of Independent t-test calculation results in a score of 0.000, which is lower than 0.05. This means that the use of picture cues is effective. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the use of picture cues is effective to teach writing to students.

This study deals with the investigation of the effect of using Total Physical Response Storytelling on Students’ Speaking Achievement. This study was conducted by using experimental research. The population of the study was the third grade of SMP N 22 Medan. There were seventy two students used as the sample out of the research taken from two classes and they were divided into two groups namely the experimental group and control group. The experimental group was taught by using Total Physical Response Storytelling while the control group taught without using Total Physical Response Storytelling. The instrument of collecting the data was an oral test. To obtain the result of the reliability of the test, the researcher used the Product Moment Formula. The result of the calculation showed that the reliability of the test was 0.63, which means that the reliability of the test is high. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The result of the analysis showed that tobserved is exceeded than ttable (3,692 > 1,994) at the level of significance of 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 70. The result of this study showed that the students’ speaking achievement taught by using Total Physical Response Storytelling is higher than those who taught without using Total Physical Response Storytelling.

Each group consists of five meeting. The material for the first meeting was about examination of pregnancy. The second meeting was about examination of Leopold. The third meeting was about baby’s care. The fourth meeting was about breast self-exam. And the last meeting was about infuse. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation and recording. The findings show that there was a significant effect between students who taught using CTL and who taught by using conventional teaching. The test result of experimental group after being analyzed was 0.023 < 0.05. The analysis was conducted the mean score of each category both pretest and posttestin experimental group was higher than control group. Therefore, it can be concluded that contextual teaching and learning can help teacher to teach the students easier and students are easier to understand the material.

ABSTRACT The objective of the study was to investigate the use of Three Fold of role play significantly affected students’ speaking competence. This study was conducted by using experimental design. The population was all students of grade XI of SMA PAB 8 SAENTIS with the total number of the students was 120 students. There were 60 students taken as the sample by using cluster random sampling. The students were divided into two groups namely  experimental and control groups. The experimental group was taught by using three fold model of role play while the control group was taught without using three fold of role play. The instrument for collecting data was in the form of oral test. The mean score of post test in experimental group (68,13) is higher than the control group (59,1). The score of experimental group showed that the students’ achievement increases significantly. Dealing the data above, it was found that the use of three fold model of role play affects students’ competence on speaking.   Keywords: three fold model, role play, narrative text, speaking

The study is concerning with experimental study which discussed the effect of planted question technique on students’ achievement in writing narrative text. It took place at SMP Pabaku Stabat. The subjects were the nineth grade students with the population of 132 students. 60 students were chosen as the sample and group into experimental and control group. Each group consisted of 30 students. The experimental group was taught with planted question technique while the control one was taught without planted question technique. A writing test was used to collect the data on the students’ writing ability. The data collected were analyzed by using t-test. The result of the data analysis showed that the t-observed was 6,53. It was higher that the value of t-table (tt) is 1,67 for 5% and 2,39 for 1%. This meant that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It can be concluded that there is effect of planted question technique on students’ achievement in writing narrative text of nineth grade of SMP Pabaku Stabat.

This study was aimed to find out the effect of  Team  Assisted Individualization (TAI) method on students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. It was conducted by using experimental research design. The population of this research was the first (X) grade students of SMA Al-Hidayah Medan. It consisted of  104 students with 3 parallel classes. Students were chosen as the sample by using random sampling technique. There were two randomized groups, namely experimental group and control group. Class X-1 with 36 students became the experimental group while class X-2 with 36 students became control group. The Experimental group was taught by using Team Assisted Individualization (TAI) method and the control group was taught without a treatment. The instrument which was used for collecting the data was writing test. The data was analyzed by using t-test formula. The result showed that the mean of score in post-test for experimental group ( 68.48) ) was higher than control group (66.53). The value of tobserved (2.94) is higher than the value of ttable (1.994) (a = 0.05 ) with the degree of freedom (df) = 70. So, alternative hypotheis (Ha) was accepted and the Team Assisted Individualization (TAI) method significantly affected students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. Keywords : Team-Assisted Indiividualization, Writing Descriptive Text
