The use of short story as an essential component of second and foreign language teaching has recently been resurrected. Current studies also indicated that short story can facilitate effective learning of speaking. This study aimed at investigating whether short stories use was effective to develop students’ speaking in English as a foreign language (EFL) context. To achieve the aim, a pretest-posttest experiment design using two groups of experimental (n=30) and control (n=30) was conducted at SMPN 160 Jakarta. The control group was taught speaking using short stories, while the control group was taught speaking in the routine procedure of the English classes. The experiment occurred in six weeks, two forty-five-minutes-sessions per week. Data was collected using tests administering the interview technique. The results of the hypothesis test employing SPSS22.00demonstrated that short story use had a significant effect on the participants' speaking skills improvement. It was, therefore, recommended to use short story to help students develop their speaking performance. Keywords: EFL, short story, speaking skills

This study aimed to answer whether using chessboard technique in responding to short story develops student’s speaking skill or not. The method used in this study was one of the quasi-experimental designs: pretest-posttest non-equivalent comparison control group design. The population of the study was the eleventh-grade student at SMA N 12Palembang and the sample were taken from the population by using purposive sampling. The data were collected by using two instruments, test and questionnaire. The test wasgiven twice to the experimental and control group, as the pretest and the posttest. Thequestionnaire was distributed to the experimental group after conducting the treatment to get more information related to the problem of the study. To verify the hypothesis, thedata from pretest and posttest on the experimental and control group were analyzed byusing paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test. The result of the study showed that applying chessboard technique in responding to the short story develops student’s speaking skills. Some students (60%) in the experimental group achieve good category compared to only a few students (20%) in control group.

This study aims to describe the improvement of speech skills in responding to students' short stories through the application of the stick talking method. This study is based on learning to speak in response to the short story on the students in the category of low. The method used in this study is qualitative descriptive with a classroom action approach that describes speaking skills to respond to classical short stories and speaking skills in response to a short story through a talking stick method. in practive both two cycles consisting of the planning stage, the execution of the action, the observation, and the reflection. The subject of this study were samples dran bypurposive sampling technique of 30 students of class VII-C SMP Negeri 40 Medan. The results showed that students 'ability to respond to the students' short story increased after talking stick method was applied in the pre-cycles, the average score was 52.33 and the percentage of classical completeness was 20% After applying the method of talking stick ), the result of the students 'test scores on the first cycle obtained an average score of 69.5 and increased to 71.67 in the second cycle test.Based on the percentage of students' classical completeness in cycle I 66.67% increase in cycle II 76.67%. The research concluded that the application of talking stick method can improve the speaking skill in responding to the short story in the students of class VII-C SMP Negeri 40 Medan.

Speaking skill acquisition is a necessity for communication. However, speaking English as a foreign language is not as easy as speaking English as a first language since practice opportunities are limited. This study tried to find out a technique of reinforcement that can help students; who study English as a foreign language; develop their speaking skills. This study investigated the effect of using simulation strategy in developing EFL speaking skills, with the assistance of using a telegram channel "Oxford Bookworms Collection" for PDF books with an audio version, to stimulate pronunciation, intonation and enrich vocabulary. The researchers used a quantitative approach with an experimental design to conduct this study by involving 50 students divided into two groups. 25 students as a control group and 25 students as an experimental group; both groups were from level 3 who were learning Listening and Speaking-3 course, major English, at College of Science and Arts (Muhayil), King Khalid University. Pretest and posttest were used to collect data, results of the tests were analyzed using SPSS, Pearson correlation coefficient. The results revealed that using the simulation strategy helped the students of the experimental group to develop speaking skills and affected speaking micro-skills in terms of body language, fluency, pronunciation, intonation, grammar, and vocabulary usage positively. Moreover, students became motivated to speak spontaneously.

The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of task based language learning on developing speaking skills of secondary level learners. To achieve this objective, a task based instructional programme consisted of four units of textbook of grade IX was developed. The students of IX grade of Islamabad district were the population of the study. Two groups experimental and control were randomly taken in a natural setting from a randomly selected school of Islamabad district. Both groups were pre and post-tested to determine the difference in their mean scores. Both groups were administered a teacher made speaking skill test as pre-test before starting intervention of treatment. The experimental group got treatment, while control group was taught conventionally for 45 days. Same teacher made speaking skill test was administered to both experimental and control groups as post-test after 45 days. Two tailed t-test was applied at 0.05 levels. The results of the present study showed statistically significant differences between mean scores of the experimental group subjects in term of speaking skills as the post-test scores of experimental group were noticeably higher than the scores of control group. The results of the study support the effectiveness of TBLL as a foreign language. The present study recommends that Pakistani teachers should adopt TBLL approach which is pragmatic, instead of struggling with obsolete traditional methods in second language acquisition.

AbstractThe study investigates the contribution of authentic material on developing speaking skills in EFL classrooms. Three groups of students were formed. All studied English at the High School. Participants were assigned to groups at random. No significant differences in speaking skills could be established between the groups prior to the experiment. The control group listened to authentic audio tracks in English and discussed their contents, watched authentic English movies and did exercises based on these tasks for developing speaking skills. The first experimental group spent part of the time on theoretical explanation of, and practical exercises with, English prosody by an instructor. The second experimental group instead spent part of the time on English prosody instruction. The total instruction time was the same for all three groups, i.e. 20 hours. Students then took a posttest in speaking skills. The results showed that the second experimental group performed better than the other groups in developing speaking skills. These results have pedagogical implications for curriculum designers and all who are involved in EFL classrooms.Key words: English as a Foreign Language (EFL), Authentic Material, Speaking Skill

Abstract Many factors make quality education or not. These factors include the professionalism of educators, educational inputs both in the form of student input and facilities (infrastructure input), learning process, environment and others. This paper attempts to confirm the process of improving students' speaking skills on English subjects through cooperative learning of Jigsaw models on students in X Class of MIA SMA Negeri 2 DKI Jakarta. The subjects were 108 students studying speaking English The subjects then were randomly assigned into experimental group and control group The experiment lasted for nine weeks started with pre-test in the beginning and ended with a post - test in the last meeting. During the treatment, the teacher applied planning, drafting, revising and editing stages in learning. The result shows Learning outcomes in students, especially speaking skills in students in SMA Negeri 2 DKI Jakarta has increased. This is evident through the experiments on cycles I and II both for class 10 Mipa 1, from the mean of 70.9167 to 84.2778. class 10 Mipa 2, from the average 71.8056 to 86.2222 and for class 10 Mipa 3 from the average 70.5833 to the average 84.2222 so that the total increase during applying the Jigsaw type cooperative learning model from the initial value. This study was conducted as an attempt to discover the effect of applying Demonstration Method on students’ achievement in speaking skill. It was an experimental research. The subject was students of Grade XII, Vocational High School (Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan: SMK), which consisted of 79 students. The research was divided into two groups: experimental and control groups. The instrument used to collect the data was speaking test. To obtain the reliability of the test, the writer applied Kuder Richardson 21 formula. The result of the reliability was 0.7, and it was found that the test was reliable. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The analysis showed that the scores of the students in the experimental group were significantly higher than the scores of the students in the control group at the level of significant m = 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 77, t-observed value 8.9 > t-table value 1.99. The findings indicate that using Demonstration Method significantly affected the students’ achievement in speaking skill. So, English teachers are suggested to use Demonstration Method in order to improve students’ achievement in speaking skill.

       The present study aims at investigating the effect of applying group work technique on developing non-English major students' attitude towards learning English as a foreign language .Two null hypotheses have been formulated; the first hypothesis states that there is no statistically significant difference between the experimental and control group in their attitude towards learning EFL after the experiment. The second one states that there is no statistically significant difference in (pre-post questionnaire) of the experimental group students' attitude towards learning EFL. To achieve the aim of the study, and verify its hypothesis, the researcher has applied eight week experiment. A sample of 62 students has been chosen and divided into experimental and control groups. It has been chosen randomly from the second year students in the Basic Education College/ Department of History/Academic year (2017-2018).        The attitude questionnaire for both groups was applied before and after the experiment. After processing the results statistically, it was found that there is a statistically significant difference in favor of the experimental group. Having used the t-test formula, it was found that there is statistically significant development in the experimental group students' attitude towards learning EFL, which in turn indicates that the use of GWT is more effective than the traditional method.  Conclusion and recommendations were drawn.

This study aimed to identify the effect of using thinking aloud strategy to improve speaking skill among learners of Arabic language in Malaysia. To achieve the objectives of the study, several Arabic language learners from University Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) in Malaysia have been chosen to participate in this study. The study sample consists of (30) students, they are then divided into two groups; the first experimental group consists of (15) students studied the Arabic language using the thinking aloud strategy, and the control group consists of (15) students studied using traditional method of teaching. A test has been used in this study; the test speaking skills (pre and post). This paper presents experimental results about the use of the Critical Literacy Approach (CLA) in literary appreciation using Indonesian short stories. The purpose of the study is to find better teaching strategies to improve students’ critical thinking skills and critical awareness to comprehend the conditions of the world, including social relationships involving disproportionate power relations. This study uses the randomized pretest-posttest control group design (RPPCGD), which is a randomized design by giving pretest and posttest to the experimental group (CLA) and control group (expository). The effect of both teaching strategies is calculated through the difference between the pretest and posttest of both groups. This research involved 170 students in the Department of Indonesian Language and Literature Education of an education university in Indonesia. The results are presented in the form of analytical descriptions of paired samples test and paired samples correlations of each group. The results show that students who did a short story analysis with CLA had significantly increased critical thinking skills and critical awareness compared to students of expository strategy. The average posttest of the experimental group is 80.33, which is considerably higher than the control group, with an average of 76.13. The average increase in skills (posttest-pretest) of the experimental group is 38.71 points, and the control groups have an average increase of 31.19 points. Therefore, it is clear that the teaching of literary appreciation using Indonesian short stories with CLA is effective. The use of CLA strategies in increasing students’ critical thinking skills and critical awareness through literary appreciation of Indonesian short stories shows positive results. The results of this study can contribute to the field of learning design with new ideas to improve critical thinking skills and critical awareness of Indonesian students through effective short story analysis or fictional prose analysis.
