Background: Perceptions of individuals and society about the elderly are reflected in the services provided to them.  These reflections might be revealed   in various fields such as health care services and sufficient job opportunities, or they could be revealed in the issue of discrimination against the elderly, which is a problem emerging in advanced ages.Objective: This study aims to identify the relationship between nursing and elderly care program students’ attitudes towards ageism.Methods: This study, which is descriptive and relational method, was conducted between November and December, 2016. The participants were 220 students. The data were collected through a questionnaire, and the Ageism Attitude Scale, and were analyzed using t-test, two-way multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA).  Findings: Results show that the students generally had positive attitudes towards ageism. Nursing department students received significantly higher scores in the Limiting the Elderly Person’s Life sub-dimension and Ageism Attitude Scale in comparison to Elderly Care Program students.  3rd year nursing department students had higher scores in the Ageism Attitudes Scale in comparison to 1st and 2nd year nursing department students and students in the Elderly Care Program. “Positive Discrimination towards the Elderly” sub-dimension and the “Ageism Attitudes Scale” total scores were found to be significantly higher in nursing department students according to the variable of desire to work in a geriatric service in the future. (p<0.05).Conclusion: This study found that students had positive attitudes towards ageism, and nursing students’ Ageism Attitudes Scale mean scores were higher than those of elderly care program students. More comprehensive studies are needed in order to improve students’ attitudes towards elderly people.

The determination of nursing students’ attitudes toward elderly discrimination and their opinions about home care is important in that it will affect the quality of care provided to elderly individuals in their homes by the students in the future. For this reason, the aim of this study was to determine relationship between nursing students’ attitudes toward elderly discrimination and their opinions about home care services. This descriptive study was conducted with a total of 318 students from a university nursing faculty during the fall semester of the 2016-2017 academic year. Data for the study were collected using the Home Care Services Evaluation Questionnaire and the Ageism Attitude Scale. It was found that there was a positively significant but weak relationship between the students’ age discrimination scale total score and the positive discrimination subdimension score, and their opinions about home care services ( p < .001). Students’ attitudes toward elderly discrimination were found to make a statistically significant contribution to their opinions about home care services. It was ascertained that students’ attitudes toward elderly discrimination affected their opinions about home care services. It is recommended that geriatric nursing and home care nursing lectures be included in the nursing education curriculum, awareness of the importance of the concept of old age and elderly care be increased by establishing internship fields for students in institutions that provide home care for the elderly, and positive attitudes toward the elderly be promoted.

Background: Nursing positions for older students can affect the quality of care provided to them. The values, perceptions, and beliefs of health care nurses towards the elderly are considered among the underlying causes of prejudice against the elderly.Objective: This study aimed to study the effect of intervention program on the attitudes of students towards Ageism.Methodology: The study was conducted at the Faculty of Nursing -MansouraUniversity using semi-experimental design with prior evaluation of the other to conduct this study. A total number of 110 nursing students attendingMansouraUniversity were included in the study. A self-administered questionnaire and the educational background on aging and care of the elderly using the attitude of Kogan towards the elderly scale were used. A structured educational intervention with gerontology content for students was designed and implemented to raise students ' knowledge, and improve their attitudes toward the ageism. The study was conducted from February 2016 to May 2016.Results: There was a statistically significant difference in total score of negative attitude scale items before and after implementation of gerontology nursing course.Conclusion & recommendation: The educational intervention with gerontology content is valuable in humanizing nursing students' negative attitude toward the ageism. Nurse educators strengthen gerontological content in the nursing curriculum and provide tailored nursing education to reduce ageism among professional nurses as well as dissemination of educational intervention with gerontology content to other nursing students in all specialties inEgypt for further confirmation of the findings.

In education, computers and calculators historically have been associated with mathematics and the sciences, and are frequently incorporated into these areas of the curriculum. This may have serious implications for females because of the long history of reported sex differences in achievement and attitudes in mathematics and related disciplines. This study of sixty high school students examines the relationship between mathematics performance and students' attitudes toward technology (computers and calculators), and whether the relationship is similar for males and females. A practice form of the General Educational Development (GED) test was used to measure mathematics performance. Students' attitudes toward computers were assessed by the Computer Attitude Scale, and attitudes toward calculators were assessed by a 4-item measure developed by the authors. In general, students with more positive attitudes toward computers and calculators were found to perform better than students with more negative attitudes.

Abstract Background It is estimated by the year 2050, 80% of the global elderly population will be from the low-and middle income countries. Elderly care requires health workers with skills associated with an understanding of the biological, psychological, social and cultural theories related to aging. Nurses with better knowledge, skills and positive attitudes towards elderly care are highly needed and critically important for better healthcare and wellbeing of the elderly population. Therefore the objective of this study was to assess the level of knowledge and attitude of nursing students towards elderly care in Zanzibar Island. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in Zanzibar involving three out of five nursing training institutions. Participants were selected by systematic random sampling. Facts on Aging Quiz 2 and Kogan’s Attitudes Toward Old People scale were used to assess the level of knowledge and attitude towards elderly care among the students respectively. Simple and multivariable logistic regressions were applied to determine the predictors of knowledge and attitude among the participants. Results A total of 393 students participated in this study. Only 17% (69) of the participants had good level of knowledge and about 67.9% (267) had positive attitude towards elderly care. Living in an extended family and with an elderly person at home were both associated with good level of knowledge and positive attitude towards elderly care. Furthermore, living in a rural area (adjusted odds ratio = 2.23; 95% confidence interval: 1.22, 4.10) and studying at public institution (adjusted odds ratio = 2.59; 95% confidence interval: 1.41, 4.63) were associated with positive attitude towards elderly care. Conclusion This study has shown that the majority of nursing students in Zanzibar have positive attitude but poor level of knowledge towards elderly care. The current findings have demonstrated that past experience with an elderly person can help in influencing good knowledge and shaping positive attitudes towards elderly care. Low level of knowledge shown in the study suggests for further research on adequacy of nursing curriculum and/or its implementation.

Background: Studies show as people age, demand for health care services rises. One of the most important factors that significantly affect the quality of elderly care is the attitude towards older adults. Objective: The current study aimed to assess the attitude of medical sciences students towards older adults in Iran. Methods: A cross-sectional design study using a multistage proportional random sampling method was employed to obtain a sample of 583 Iranian medical sciences students in 2017. The data were measured using the Kogan's Attitudes Towards Older People Scale (KAOPS). The SPSS 23.0 for Windows (IBM SPSS Statistics 23.0) was used to analyze the data. Results: Out of the 583 respondents, around 44% were female and a little more than one-fourth was medical students. The mean age was 21.98 (SD=3.63) years. The mean score of the attitude towards the elderly was found to be 56.90 (SD=8.04). Aging health students scored a more positive attitude towards elderly people than other medical sciences students. Results of the bivariate analyses revealed that field of study (F (7, 575) = 2.66, P<0.01), participating in gerontology and geriatrics research (t (581) =2.80, p<0.01), and attending in gerontology and geriatrics congress (t (581) =1.96, p<0.05) significantly associated with attitude toward older adults. Conclusions: The findings from the current study show that Iranian medical sciences students have moderate positive attitudes towards older adults and vary by students’ field of study and their research activity in gerontology and geriatrics field. Therefore, effective interventions for enhancing the attitudes of medical sciences students towards older adults should be developed and implemented.

This survey tested the null hypothesis that teachers’ and students’ attitudes towards reading and writing do not simultaneously predict students’ achievement in the English language. The researcher utilized a sample of 38 teachers and 492 senior secondary school students from 12 schools in Benue State, Nigeria, for the study. The researcher developed and utilized the English Language Students’ Attitude Scale (ELSAS), English Language Teachers’ Attitude Scale (ELTAS), and Reading and Writing Achievement Test (RWAT) for data collection. An estimate of internal consistency was obtained through Cronbach’s Alpha and Kuder Richardson’s reliability methods and found to be 0.76 for ELSAS, 0.68 for ELTAS, and 0.81 for RWAT. Data analysis was by multiple regression statistics. The findings revealed that both English language teachers and students have a positive attitude towards reading and writing (F3, 492 = 0.160, p0.05) implying that teachers and students’ attitudes towards reading and writing jointly predicted students’ achievement in the English language in senior secondary schools. To conclude, learning would be facilitated if both teachers and students hold positive attitudes towards reading and writing, and this, in turn, could impact the students’ achievement in the English language. It was recommended that teachers should plan reading and writing instruction that can help students develop positive attitudes to these skills and parents should help in the development of these skills at home.

Abstract Reforms of the public sector, conducted in the spirit of NPM since the 1990s, are frequently studied by Western and Eastern scholars. The research shows national variations in how the NPM idea was translated and adapted into a country’s context and regulations. Care for the elderly is an interesting example of reforms conducted in the spirit of NPM, because it relates to welfare and health care and to the competences of provincial and local authorities in most European countries. This paper addresses the following questions: What do we know about the reforms conducted in the spirit of NPM and its practical implication within the field of care for the elderly during 1990 - 2010? What kind of knowledge about care for the elderly is still missing and should be developed in the future ? Th is paper conducts comparative research on what is known about the effects of the Swedish and the Polish reforms regarding care for the elderly. It argues that most literature points to negative effects, but also to the fact that there are still gaps in our knowledge about the effects of reforms concerning elderly care, especially regarding its organization. Hence, despite all the research done, we do not know what kind of social and health-care services for seniors represent the best practices for the future.

Objectives: This study examines dental hygiene students’ knowledge of and attitudes and behavior toward elderly individuals. As the population of elderly people increases, the need for dental services for this group increases as well. Methods: A frequency analysis, correlation analysis, and one-way ANOVA were conducted using SPSS 25.0. Results: Participants had various levels of knowledge and differing attitudes and behavior toward elderly patients; subjects who were interested in older people had more positive attitudes toward the elderly, as did younger, less experienced participants and those who work with older people. Conclusions: Future studies should use additional measurement tools and include different groups of participants to improve understanding of dental hygiene students’ attitudes towards the elderly.
