News websites are a digital extension of newspapers whose purpose is to meet the needs of their visitors in terms of news and information. In these sites, the time a reader remains consuming content is important because a large part of its income is obtained from advertising guidelines. In the present study, it was evaluated how the type of reading device, the presence of multimedia content and the length of the articles, affect the permanence of the readers in the site. Using a sample of paid subscribers from a business news web portal, three experiments were conducted under different approaches: online, where all users went through different news articles, online, where the news article was the same for all the subjects and an offline made in a reading laboratory. From the analysis of variance, it was determined that the reading device and the presence of multimedia content can influence the time a user stays on the website. In addition, in the local experiment, it was observed that readers feel more comfortable consuming content on devices with larger screens

Abstract. User comments on news websites are frequently uncivil and are not supported by reasoned argumentation. These characteristics can have negative effects on the perceived quality of the commented-on journalistic content, yet to date, it remains unclear how such effects occur. We propose three mechanisms that assume that the effect of user comments depends on how deliberately and elaborately the quality of the commented-on news item is judged. We conducted an experiment ( N = 633) in which we varied the level of civility and reasoning in the comments accompanying a news article and the brand of the news website on which it was presented. The results showed that a lack of reasoning in the comments decreased the perceived quality of the news item irrespective of brand awareness, but only with high elaboration during judgment. Incivility in the comments decreased the perceived quality of the journalistic content, but only with low elaboration, and only with an unknown news brand. We discuss different psychological mechanisms that can explain this pattern of effects.

This study finds some publicly available data, such as the comments posted to the news stories and online survey results, could be an alternative data source for researchers to analyze news websites when the Web server log data are not available.

Past studies in Sarcasm Detection mostly make use of Twitter datasets collected using hashtag-based supervision but such datasets are noisy in terms of labels and language. To overcome the limitations related to noise in Twitter datasets, this News Headlines dataset for Sarcasm Detection is collected from two news website. TheOnion aims at producing sarcastic versions of current events and we collected all the headlines from News in Brief and News in Photos categories (which are sarcastic). We collect real (and non-sarcastic) news headlines from Huff Post. Sarcasm Detection on social media platform. The dataset is collected from two news websites, theonion.com and huffingtonpost.com. Since news headlines are written by professionals in a formal manner, there are no spelling mistakes and informal usage. This reduces the sparsity and also increases the chance of finding pre-trained embeddings. Furthermore, since the sole purpose of TheOnion is to publish sarcastic news, we get high-quality labels with much less noise as compared to Twitter datasets. Unlike tweets that reply to other tweets, the news headlines obtained are self-contained.

This interdisciplinary research aims to examine the effects of photos used in Arabic news websites on both comprehension and recall among readers. The dual-coding theory was used as a theoretical framework. The research used an experimental design of two groups to test the effects of photos on comprehension and recall of the news content included in two news websites created specifically for the experiment. Two groups of 80 university students have participated voluntarily in the experiment. The results indicated that the use of photos in the news website has increased significantly the levels of both comprehension and recall among respondents.

This study explores the occupational preferences of 150 kindergarten and elementary school children living in urban, semi-urban and rural areas in Greece and the stereotypes that emerge from the choices they made when they were asked to make a drawing of ‘what they would like to be when they grow up’ and then to justify that choice. The statistical analysis of the data confirmed the findings made in previous studies: The analysis of variance showed that (a) the stereotypical representation of gender is more frequent among girls, (b) gender affects the choice of gender-typed occupations, as indicated by the boys’ more frequent choice of ‘traditionally masculine occupations’, (c) the educational background of the father affects children’s stereotyped choices, and (d) media and family influence is more frequent among younger children. Finally, the children’s justifications showed that, for the majority of the sample, their choice of occupation expresses a specific feeling, for a smaller percentage this choice expresses a certain playfulness, while for only a few does their choice express the desire for further knowledge and profit.

The paper presents the experimental results regarding the hysteretic behavior of elastomeric systems made in conformity with the European Standards SR EN 1337-3 and SR EN 15129. It is also mentioned that the hysteretic damping was determined by experimentally raising the hysteresis loop in a low-cycle harmonic regime, with a kinematic exterior excitation defined by a harmonic displacement law. In this context, it is mentioned that the area of the hysteretic loops was determined instrumentally (in analogical representation of the signals) as well as under digital form, through a sampling of the physical signal, which allows a high precision of the determination.

It may be useful to outline the progress made in the field of inertial navigation for civil transports made since the last meeting of the Institute held to discuss the subject. After experimental evaluation work, mainly in the U.S.A. but also in this country, the first production equipment made specifically for civil use was the Sperry SGN 10 equipment made for Pan American Airways and first fitted in 1965.
