Abstract. This paper analyzes the appraisal system of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre  movie review by Roger Ebert. This study aims at analyzing the evaluation given by the reviewer toward the movie. The data of this research are all clauses containing appraising items toward the movie. The data were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method and analytical frameworks suggested by Martin and White (2005) and Martin and Rose (2003) on appraisal system in systemic functional linguistics (SFL). Based on the analysis, the researcher found that the kind of appraising item mostly used by the reviewer is attitudinal lexis (35%) and the least used items are relational process (1%) and modality clause (1%). The attitude is mostly appreciation (59%), followed by affect (26%) and judgment (15%). For the engagement, the evaluations are classified as monogloss (99%) and heterogloss (1%). For the graduation, the evaluations are classified as down-scaled (76%) and up-scaled (24%). It can be concluded that the reviewer tends to use attitudinal lexis in his evaluation. The evaluations are mostly sourced from the reviewer himself. The reviewer tends to evaluate things more than people, and his evaluations are mostly to be negative toward the movie.Keywords: appraisal system; movie review; evaluation languageAbstrak. Data penelitian mencakup seluruh klausa dalam teks review yang dikaji yang memuat kata-kata appraisal terhadap film yang ditelaah. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif kualitatif dengan menggunakan kerangka analisis yang dikemukakan oleh Martin, Rose, dan White tentang sistem appraisal dalam linguistik sistemik fungsional (SFL). Hasil analisis menyatakan bahwa lebih banyak menggunakan attitudinal lexis (35%), dan sedikit menggunakan proses relasional (1%) dan klausa modalitas (1%). Jenis-jenis attitude yang digunakan adalah apresiasi (59%), afek (26%), dan judgement (15%). Dalam engagement, jenis evaluasi yang digunakan meliputi monogloss (99%) dan heterogloss (1%). Dalam graduation, evaluasi dilakukan secara down-scaled (76%) dan up-scaled (24%). Sumber evaluasi sebagian besar berasal dari penelaah (reviewer) sendiri. Sebagian besar materi yang dievaluasi adalah benda daripada orang, dan penilaian terhadap film ini cenderung negatif.        Kata kunci: sistem appraisal; teks telaah film; bahasa evaluatif

This study aims to analyze the function and realization of the meaning contained in the Poda ni Namonangon Ribut as an ancient script text contained in the Ulu Pungkut sub-district, Mandailing Natal district. This study uses a qualitative method with the documentation method in which the data is sourced from the Medan Archeology Agency. Data were analyzed using Systemic Functional Linguistics theory on Ideational Functions and to find metaphors of ideational meaning. The results of this study indicate the distribution of the relational process dominates from Participant, Cirmuntance. The realization of the meaning of the ideational function can be seen in the first, metaphor as a description of the community who want to have offspring, where the aim of Poda is ido napajadi boru "what makes a daughter". In the second, there is a metaphor that explains the word Na sundat realized with the words "Heavy Rain", "Divorce", "Birds perch", "ravine". In the third, shows that Poda has methafora like when the expectation is reached, it is the services of the writer "Shaman”. then when the writer has explained what the ingredients are. Social context of text that has a narrative and the author's conclusion about the solution to the problem of everyone who wants offspring in his family. The tradition of writing with the mandailing script (sumurat) became quite a tradition so that there are ancient texts in the traditional house became the animist beliefs and ideologies which can be seen in Bagas Godang.

This study revealed the result of the analysis of the relational process clauses found on the students’ descriptive essays at the CCU course. The study is aimed at scrutinizing the clauses of the relational process with their roles and lexical verbs realizing the relational process. The data analyzed for the accountable study were 21 descriptive essays. The method applied for the study was the descriptive qualitative one and Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) was used as the framework in analyzing the data. The study exposed 5 different roles of clauses as a result. The roles are properties or characteristics with the first place following definition, classification, composition, and function ones in a consecutive way. The study result also acknowledged that relational process clauses are mostly used for describing Properties. This role was realized by two types of relational process clauses –intensive and possessive relational process clauses operating on attributive relational process. However, the relational process occurring in possessive relational process clause was only realized by a single verb have. This indicates that the students have a limited linguistic knowledge which implicates on improving students’ writing descriptive skills. The paper titled Nominal Group as Qualifier to ‘Someone’ investigated types of qualifiers which are embedded to the head ‘someone’ in a nominal group. This research was conducted in the light of Systemic Functional Linguistics analysis. The data was analyzed, classified then described using descriptive qualitative method. This research produced four classifications of nominal group as qualifier, which were clauses, prepositional phrases, nominal groups, and linked independent element. The clause as qualifier is sub-classified into finite and non-finite clauses. Further sub-classification is conducted over finite clause into Full Relative Clause (FRC), Relative Clause with Preposition (RCP), and Contact Clause (CC). Further sub-classification over non-finite clause resulted in Operative Imperfective Non Finite Clause (OINFC), Receptive Imperfective Non Finite Clause (RINFC), and Operative Perfective Non Finite Clause (OPNFC). This research also found qualifiers which consisted of two or more linked non-embedding elements.

The research is about the material processes that apply in English clause of Life Insurance. The data are taken from the brochure of Life Insurance in five different companies. They are analyzed based on the theories of systemic functional linguistics focusing on the material process. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The conclusions of the research are the lexical verbs describe the type of material processes in Life Insurance brochures there are offer, receive, protect, provide, customize, request, access, earn, allow, decrease, increase, lock, change, add, choose, take, pay, buy, build, work, help, and give. Then the role of the participant involved that are actor, goal, and recipient.

Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) is a study of language which views language as two characteristics, systemic and functional. With using SFL, the researchers try to analyze the tale’s story of Sabai Nan Aluih. The research aim is to identify the interpersonal meaning realized in that story and to reveal the speech function of language use in that story. The research design of this analysis is descriptive qualitative research. The object of this research is the interpersonal meaning analysis of clauses as exchange in the tale of Sabai Nan Aluih. The data of this research is the clauses as exchange in the story of Sabai Nan Aluih. The source of data which is used in this research is the documentation of the data research paper. The researchers use document analysis from the story of Sabai Nan Aluih as collecting data. The data is analyzed by using description method. In the interpersonal analysis, declarative mood dominates almost the story, it is about 91 %. And, the data analysis of speech function is found in the story of Sabai Nan Aluih, statement, question and command, in where statement is domination from the story about 94%. The objective of the research is to investigate the use of transitivity process in students' descriptive text and to find out the most dominant process of transitivity used. The data analyzed were 46 clauses taken from descriptive text written by six students of tenth grade of senior high school. In this research, the writers used descriptive qualitative method. The result of the research showed that there were 4 types of processes that occurred in the data, they were: material process (8, 70%), mental process (17, 39%), relational process (45, 65%), and existential process (28, 26%). While, behavioral and verbal process were not found. The most dominant process found was relational process. It implies that students were aware how descriptive text should be written, since one of language features in descriptive text is using clauses with relational process.

Sayangnya, kebanyakan dari mereka kurang memahami secara mendalam makna mars Unipdu. Makna mendalam dari mars Unipdu dapat diketahui dengan menggunakan pendekatan Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL).Penelitian menggunakan teknik trianggulasi data. Tujuan dari penelitian ini yaitu untuk lebih mengetahui tujuan dan makna mars Unipdu secara implisit. Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan bahwa proses transitivitas dominasi proses perilaku 5 data atau 72%. Proses ini terdiri dari 1 data atau 14% proses perilaku verbal dan 4 data atau 58% proses perilaku mental. Proses ini menunjukkan bahwa Universitas Pesantren Tinggi Darul Ulum (Unipdu) Jombang membina, mewujudkan, dakwah dan mencetak insan,  tidak hanya sekedar bicara tetapi juga memberi contoh yang baik. Selanjutnya, proses mental terdiri dari 1 data atau 14%. Proses ini menunjukkan bahwa harapan untuk mendapatkan ridlo Allah menjadi jantung untuk mencetak insan yang bertakwa. Sementara itu, proses relasional identifikasi terdapat juga 1 data atau 14%. Hal ini mengindifikasikan bahwa Pancaran sinar Darul Ulum itu mempunyai pengaruh dalam pengembangan ilmu agama, intelektualitas, dan pengetahuan. Secara umum Universitas Pesantren Tinggi Darul Ulum (Unipdu) mempunyai peranan aktif dalam mencetak insan yang bertakwa.Kata Kunci: Lagu mars Unipdu, proses transitivitas, insan  AbstractThe song of mars Unipdu is the song for unipdu loyalis and students. Unfortunately, Most of them lack of understanding the deep meaning of mars Unipdu. The deep meaning of mars Unipdu can be known by using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) approach.This research used data trianggulation techniques. The purpose of this study was to know more the aim and meaning of Unipdu mars implicitly. The result of this study showed that the transitivity processes are dominated by behavioural process, 5 data or 72%. It contained 1 data or 14% for verbal behavioural process and 4 data or 58% for mental behavioural processes. This processes indicated that Universitas Pesantren Tinggi Darul Ulum (Unipdu) Jombang educated, actualized, and created students, It was not only by saying but also giving good behaviors. Then, mental process consisted of 1 data or 14%. This process showed that the hopes to have Allah’s “ridlo” became a heart for creating “takwa’ students. Meanwhile, Identifying relational process had 1 data or 14%. It indicated that rays of Darul Ulum had effects in developing of religions, intellectualities, and knowledges.Generally, Universitas Pesantren Tinggi Darul Ulum (Unipdu) Jombang had active roles in creating “takwa” students. This research examined the interpersonal meaning realized in the lyrics of Adele’s album 21. The objectives of this research are to describe the meaning of Adele’s song based on interpersonal meaning by analyzing on the mood system of Adele’s song and to describe how Adele’s song effect the listeners through interpersonal meaning by analyzing on modality. The design of the research was descriptive qualitative. The main source of data in this research were the lyrics in the Adele’s album 21. There were three song lyrics that the researcher analyzed in this research. The results of data analysis there are 144 data in three Adele song lyrics. The data itself is realized by system of mood that divided into 100 data of declarative, 27 data of interrogative and 17 data of imperative. The result of analysis shows that Adele mostly used declarative. Adele used declarative in every song lyrics because Adele wanted to share her story to the listener by delivering her songs. The content of song lyrics are about her love story. Besides that, based on data that has been analyzed through modality, the researcher found 67 data in Adele’s songs. The data itself divided into 1 data of usuality, 55 data of obligation and 11 data of inclination. In Adele’s song, Adele mostly uses obligation. Obligation occurs when someone has ask to do something for others. It means Adele uses obligation to ask the listeners to know something. Adele uses obligation to effect the listener. Obligation used to Adele to express through song lyrics to the listeners for her wishes she has ask to her couple. Adele wants listeners to know that her love story is complicated.

As a popular manga series, Attack on Titan has various characters giving certain impression among the fandom. Two of them are Erwin Smith and Levi Ackerman. Erwin is known as an integrated and influencing commander meanwhile Levi is the humanity's strongest soldier who is also recognized as one of Erwin's closest subordinates. Their togetherness presents questions from the manga fans whether there is special relationship between them. Some fans accepted. However, there are not a few fans refused. Using systemic functional linguistics approach, the researchers try to reveal the happening tendency considering the clauses expressed by these two characters. Doing descriptive qualitative research, tenor analysis is done in the level of grammar. The researchers use criterion-based purposive sampling to get relevant data and process them from domain, taxonomy, componential, up to getting cultural theme analysis. The discussion shows complex interpersonal relationship because of considering the linguistic data findings along with their impacts towards the built social indication. This research gives new perspective for language study towards debatable thing between factions carrying particular ideology.

Four suicide notes written by three famous people, Jiah Khan, Kevin Carter, and Virginia Woolf, were analyzed in this study. Systemic Functional Linguistics theory especially about transitivity proposed by Halliday is used to see the ideational meaning of all four suicide notes by identifying the elements of the clauses. This study was conducted with a qualitative method assisted by a descriptive statistical method to see the spread and functions of the elements of transitivity in the suicide notes. To analyze the text based on the theory of transitivity, the text is divided into clauses based on the type of process, then each element of the existing process, participant, and circumstantial element is calculated. The results show that out of 170 total processes found, the material process (42.94%) is the most dominant process, followed by the mental process (28.82%), the relational process (19.41%), the verbal process (5.29%), the behavioral process (2.94%), and the existential process (0.59%). Just like the process type, from the two types of participants (who are directly involved and obliquely involved) that exist, actor (22.88%) and scope (15.36%) which are the participants of the material process are the most dominant participants. While the existent (0.31%) which is the participant of the existential process, has the lowest occurrence frequency. For the circumstantial element, location which consists of place and time is the most dominant circumstantial element. The location accounts for 44% of the circumstantial elements in all four suicide notes. Furthermore, Jiah Khan’s suicide note with the material process as the most dominant process describes the unpleasant behavior she experienced, which then leads to betrayal, sacrifice, self-destruction, loss, and loneliness. Whereas Kevin Carter’s suicide note with the relational process of attributive as the most dominant process describes regret, pressure, and despair. Then both Virginia Woolf’s suicide notes show how she blamed herself for what happened although it has different dominant processes between the first suicide note and the second suicide note.
