This article examines the small-scaled, village-based, self-organised initiatives community-based conservation (CBC) of Bung Jagoi Heritage, Bau, Sarawak. The community self-organisation criteria are adopted in this study. The initiatives are developed through the CBC Projects under the Equator Initiative (EI) of the United Nation Development Programme (UNDP) which are considered successful by the EI. This article also investigates the impact of Bidayuh customary law or adat on the access and forest resources management in the communal forest of Bung Jagoi Heritage which utilised the Adat Bidayuh Order, 1994 and native customs as their guidelines for managing the access and forest resources. The level of participation among the villagers and the committee members is also assessed in this study based on the widely used participation typology developed by Jules N. Pretty. The data for this study is gathered through semi-structured interviews (SSIs) and observation. The findings of this study shows that the self-organisation in CBC of Bung Jagoi Heritage is initiated by a small number of Jagoi-Duyoh villagers due to some outsiders’ mysterious visits and concerns to conserve the forested land that also situate an ancestral village and its biodiversity as well as to develop the Bung Jagoi Heritage through the conservation activities. The success of this CBC self-organisation relies heavily on the involvement and commitment of the committee members, funding from the local and international donors, and leadership of the committee’s advisor in order for it to sustain and develop. The local community practices collectively known as the adat gives some impact on the access and forest resources through its communal tenure and traditional beliefs. The level of participation among the villagers can be categorised as ‘participation for material incentive’ while the level of participation among the committee member can be categorised as ‘self-mobilisation’.Key words: self-organisation, community-based conservation (CBC), customary law, adat, forest resources, participation, Bidayuh, Jagoi.

Abstract For holistic interventions and research on dementia, it is fundamental to understand care experiences from the perspectives of carers, care recipients, and care professionals. While research on care dyads and triads have highlighted the effects of communication and interactional aspects on care relationships, there is a lack of knowledge on how individual-contextual and relational factors shape the provision and receipt of care in terms of decision-making processes, resource allocation, and expectations of care outcomes. Thus, this paper sheds light on (i) how carers negotiate care provision with other important life domains such as employment, household/family roles and conflicts, as well as their own health problems, life goals, values, and aspirations for ageing; (ii) how older adults with dementia perceive support and those who provide it; (iii) the structural constraints faced by care professionals in delivering a team-based mode of dementia care; and, taken together, (iv) how community-based dementia care is impeded by barriers at the individual, relational, and institutional levels. Findings were derived from semi-structured interviews and observational data from fieldwork conducted with 20 persons with dementia (median age = 82), 20 of their carers (median age = 60), and 4 professional care providers. All respondents were clients and staff of a multidisciplinary and community-based dementia care system in Singapore. Our analysis indicates the impact of dementia care is strongly mediated by the interplay between institutional/familial contexts of care provision and the various ‘orientations’ to cognitive impairment and seeking support, which we characterised as ‘denial/acceptance’, ‘obligated’, ‘overprotective’, and ‘precariously vulnerable’.

This study focused on understanding the cultural immersion experience of students who participated in Study Abroad Programs (SAP) and Global Service Learning Programs (GSL). The study looked at how the immersion experience impacted the participants’ view of self and others upon re-entry into their local community. Specifically, we applied the perspective transformation theoretical framework to analyze the extent to which participation in cultural immersion programs transforms students’ perceptions of self and others. The analysis of the semi-structured interviews suggested that by engaging in intentional immersion and guided reflections, participants became aware of the need to reevaluate their perspectives, expectations, and assumptions about self and others. We also found that there were differences in the way participants experienced the cultural immersion process and the impact it had on cultural awareness and self-identity.

Community Based Forest Management (CBFM) is a system of state forest management that conducted Perhutani joinly with community forestry forest villages. CBFM include: drafting plans, utilization of forest resources, and protection of forest resources. CBFM regulated the rights and obligations of all stakeholders involved. Conflict of interest in the management of forest resources can lead to conflicts beetwen any stakeholders. This research aim to determine (1) history and sources of forest resources conflict in the Kalimendong village, (2) conflict resolution mechanism that were implemented based on the CBFM, (3) effectiveness CBFM as conflict resolution in forest resources management. The result of this study found that the conflict in Kalimendong village occured since 1998 that comes from the differences in perception, interest, and ownership beetwen the public and Perhutani. CBFM then can be conflict resolution of forest resources management, but CBFM can then generate a new conflict when the interests of stakeholder can not be accomodated. The analysis shows that characteristic of number of dependents has negatively correlation related to the effectiveness of CBFM as conflict resolution.<br />Keywords: conflict, CBFM, conflict resolution, forest resources

<p>In many developing countries, Community-Based Tourism (CBT) is regarded as a sustainable tourism development tool as well as a catalyst for rural community development through the involvement of local people and the improvement of the standard of living. To extend the involvement of the local community in CBT, homestay tourism is a form of operation unit and its concept aims to facilitate individual household social-cultural and economic benefit from CBT directly. Although homestays are widely regarded as providing better livelihoods directly to the homestay operators, it is not clear to what extent homestay operations actually contribute to the sustainable livelihood of homestay operators when considering the wider livelihood implications. This research seeks to explore this gap by analysing homestay operators through the lens of Sustainable Livelihood theory (Scoones, 1998). This research adopts a post-positivist paradigm with qualitative methodology. Taking a case study approach, semi-structured interviews and observations were employed to collect primary data from community leaders, heads and deputy heads of the tourist guides, and homestay operators themselves.  Results of the study found that although homestay tourism was initially established by the government. The study also found the main characteristics of the homestay operation are in a small size with a limitation of bedrooms, and a few family members involved in hosting tourists, which are husband, wife, and an adult child. All of these people are unpaid labour but receive benefits from the sharing of food and shelter. The study also uncovered that cash-based income, gender empowerment enhancement, and environmental enhancement were the positive impacts of homestay tourism on the livelihoods of the homestay operators, and these positive livelihood outcomes were in line with the original sustainable livelihood framework. In addition, cultural revitalisation was found as an emerged indicator of the sustainable livelihood outcomes, which was used to extend the revised framework. However, the study discovered that opportunity costs, culture shock, and conflict with villagers were negative implications affecting sustainable livelihood outcomes of the homestay operators. The revised Sustainable Livelihood Framework (SLF) suggests that if these negative implications are mitigated, the overall livelihood outcomes will be even greater. The results of this study are expected to provide a deeper understanding of how the impacts of homestay tourism on the sustainable livelihood of the homestay operators.</p>

The main objective of this article is to compare the current operation of elected local action group with the concept of learning regions. This comparison is built on detailed knowledge and understanding of the operation of local action group Podbrnensko citizens’ association (Podbrnensko CA) and learning regions in general. The following is assumed: the understanding of community-based processes from the perspective of residents, the important stakeholders who influence the operation of communities or locations. The operation of local action groups is in line with the current concept led by local community development (community led local development, CLLD), which uses elements of the LEADER method. In this method the solution of development problems comes primarily from the inside, not from the outside of the studied territory. The methods used for the collection of empirical data were mostly observation and interviews with all partners involved in LAG (31 people), all mayors in LAG (29 people) and 176 people from region, i.e. methods, which result in so called deep data. Between the primary techniques applied in the research are: participant observation, unstructured or semi-structured interviews and public debates.

Abstract: The formulations of the problems and the purposes of this research were about the learning process of empowerment of local communities and the impact of learning about local community in improving critical and creative thinking of students at SMAN 2 Cianjur. Data and information collection techniques used were the interview, observation, and record of the experience. The findings of this study were: (1) The students of SMAN 2 Cianjur conducted three stages of empowerment, namely the planning stage by dividing the class into nine groups of experts along with their respective duties, the implementation stage consisting of the presentation and demonstration of the student’s innovations, and the last one, that is, the assessment stage carried out by various assessors. (2) local community-based empowerment was considered to be appropriate to increase students' critical and creative thinking. Then, the publication by students was also as a concrete action that through the use of electronics we can improve the productivity and the marketing of the local communities in order to remain sustainable and adaptive in accordance with the current developments. Keywords: critical and creative thinking, empowerment,  local community  Abstrak. Rumusan masalah dan tujuan penelitian ini adalah tentang proses pembelajaran pemberdayaan masyarakat lokal dan dampak pembelajaran masyarakat lokal dalam meningkatkan berpikir kritis dan kreatif siswa SMAN 2 Cianjur. Teknik pengumpulan data dan informasi menggunakan wawancara, observasi, dan catatan pengalaman. Temuan penelitian ini adalah: (1) Siswa SMAN 2 Cianjur melaksanakan tiga tahap proses pemberdayaan masyarakat,  yaitu tahap perencanaan dengan membagi kelas menjadi sembilan kelompok ahli beserta tugasnya masing-masing, tahap pelaksanaan yang terdiri dari presentasi dan demonstrasi inovasi siswa, dan yang terakhir, yaitu tahap penilaian yang dilakukan oleh berbagai penilai. (2) Pemberdayaan masyarakat berbasis lokal dianggap tepat untuk meningkatkan pemikiran kritis dan kreatif siswa. Selain itu, publikasi yang dilakukan oleh siswa juga merupakan tindakan nyata,  di mana melalui penggunaan media elektronik produktivitas dan pengenalan terhadap masyarakat lokal dapat ditingkatkan untuk menjaga agar tetap lestari dan adaptif sesuai dengan perkembangan saat ini. Kata Kunci: berpikir kritis dan kreatif, pemberdayaan,  masyarakat lokal

Pakistan has a treasure of historic cores as part of various cities that date back to Pre-Mughal, Mughal and post Mughal periods. Even those that were developed during the 19th century British rule have areas that are valuable as representative of a shared heritage with colonies of Britain. Since many historic cores have become part of the cities, these historic cores are seriously threatened. Unesco World Heritage List includes many major historical monuments and sites of Pakistan but it is yet to list any historical town in Pakistan .The local legislation also does not list any historical town. In spite of their value most historical areas are deteriorated and many parts of this significant heritage have been lost over the years. Community based conservation promotes the idea that the key to success of long term conservation lies in community engagement bringing the benefits of historical conservation to the local community. However, although community based conservation is practiced commonly world wide, it is not always successful. This paper tries to answer the following questions: 1. Is community based conservation an effective tool in Pakistan for conservation of urban areas? 2. What are the factors that contribute to the success or failure of such conservation exercises? 3. What part does a project design and local community character play in the success or failure of an urban conservation project. A multi sited case study method has been used to conservation project both similarities and differences related to review heritage conservation. Each site has been analysed for its unique local context and each project has been reviewed different project design which speaks about the multi layered challenges of heritage conservation. The three cases presented here offer valuable lessons for the design and implementation of area conservation programs in Pakistan. One lesson is the need to put all values embedded in urban heritage into play, as they are the drivers that mobilize a diverse set of stakeholders. These values include socio cultural and social justice, historic, artistic, educational and economic factors that can mobilize community, Government, Elite, Philanthropist and Entrepreneurs. The premise of analysis here is that the more the variety of values the more sustainable the conservation. The methodology used is literature review from secondary sources i.e. books, articles, academic papers and discussions with colleagues. The conclusion points towards the fact that In Pakistan community based conservation may not be the only solution to area conservation because only few groups can value it, like academia, groups from civil society and some government departments and communities at large need more motivation and awareness to become the major participant of urban area conservation exercises. The role of elite and private sector is also very insignificant. Any external agency can help only in advisory and financial capacity, but means to generate funds locally should be there. The status of urban area conservation is described by an academic conservationist Prof. Dr. Anila Naeem form the Department of Architecture and Planning, NED University o Engineering and Technology in 2009 as follows: “In Pakistan urban area conservation is not an established professional field and designation of historic centers is altogether a very new idea. Thus, conserving urban heritage areas may take many shapes and meanings and conservation of urban areas is more complex than conservation of individual buildings or archaeological remains. Since 1950, the need for global economy related to natural disasters has increased 14 fold. The natural disaster that occured in 2018, put Indonesia into the country with the highest number of victims in the world, which was caused by three rare phenomena. This study discusses about the Desa Tangguh Bencana program as a strategic step for community-based disaster risk reduction in the Pandeglang Regency, which is one of the areas that has the impact of damage and casualties from the tsunami phenomenon in the Sunda Strait. This study aims to obtain information about the activity steps and communication strategies of the program which refers to the concept of disaster mitigation according to George D. Haddow and Kim S. Haddow in 2014. The research method uses a descriptive qualitative approach with an interpretive paradigm. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and other supporting documents, which were analyzed using the Miles & Huberman method and tested for credibility by triangulation of sources. The results showed that community participation in this program is the main key as a planning initiator to the implementing activities. These disaster risk reduction efforts are carried out by identifying community risks, determining action plans, funding, involving opinion leaders as parties raised by the community, forming messages, to the communication channel mechanism.

Abstract Living Life to the Full 55+ (LLTTF) was an 8-week, 12-hour, community educational program based on CBT principles. The program aim was to teach participant skills and techniques to cope effectively with life stress. Participants self-referred to the program by responding to advertisements or were otherwise referred to the program by local community centres. Following the promising results of the pilot study, a follow-up empirical study was conducted to assess the impact of the program on clinical measures and other notable measures over time. Study participants (N = 514) were recruited at partner sites hosting the program. Demographic and other data was collected to assess the impact of the program. Measures collected to assess the impact of the program were the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (WEMWBS), and a brief measure of loneliness/social connectedness. Participant data was collected pre/post-intervention, and at post-course follow-up periods (3/6/9-months). Preliminary repeated-measures ANOVA analyses found statistically significant changes in depression, anxiety, mental well-being, and loneliness scores, from pre- to post-intervention. Participant’ depression, anxiety, and loneliness scores significantly reduced from pre- to post-course. Participants also experienced a significant improvement in mental well-being from pre- to post-course. Observed decreases in loneliness and depression did not significantly change from post-course to any of the follow-up periods. Results suggest the viability of a nonclinical program for addressing depression and loneliness in older individuals, and have implications for community-based strategies attempting to address mental health issues in older Canadians
