The future of distance education is certainly promising but frenetic as well. With the aid of technologies easily accessible to students and teachers alike the geographic barriers that once allowed only the few to engage in educational opportunities are now geographic bridges that promote distance learning where students and teachers from diverse latitudes and attitudes are able to engage in real time teaching and learning interactions. This teaching and learning environment is called “Viral Education,” where the process of education can be symmetrical or asymmetrical in the teaching and learning process as well as multi-task oriented in both product and idea development. This chapter looks at the future of distance education and provides a brief survey of emerging technologies that are just moments or months away from reality. In addition, this chapter explores the notion of customized education which is a continuation of democratic movements within and outside the classroom.

2020 was a truly revolutionary year in terms of education – from the paradigm of predominantly traditional education, we had to rapidly “step” into a distance format, regardless of our desire and readiness. In 2020 two tectonic shifts happened at once: the shift from synchronous offline classes (education) to synchronous online and then from synchronous formats to asynchronous and mixed. In addition to issues related to the technical support of the educational process, the issue related to the development of new professional and pedagogical principles and rules that would contribute to the highly moral behavior and activities of the teacher in creating a comfortable environment for all participants of distance learning process, emphasizing that ethical requirements must reflect the relationship between teachers and learners. We conducted a research aimed at revealing the principles and values the teachers consider crucial to follow when conducting online classes, the skills they think they need master in order to raise the level of their professional expertise, improve the effectiveness of teaching and learning processes, and make their students self-confident and independent. The results of the survey can be used in designing special courses devoted to professional or pedagogical ethics in online learning.

Institutions of higher education in Brazil are seriously behind in their development of approaches which make use of distance education techniques, in part due to widespread lack of credibility of these approaches both inside and outside academic communities, but even more so because of the highly centralized control over all aspects of higher education on the part of the country’s Ministry of Education. Despite the country’s capacity and need to do so, the rigid and pedagogically conservative attitude of this Ministry over the last three decades, combined with the equally intransigent and politically-motivated decisions of the National Congress, have discouraged practically all attempts by educational institutions, public and private, to invest significantly in the development of innovative and far-reaching initiatives employing distance learning methods. Hybridization, or the combination, in the same course, of face-to-face situations for learning with those carried out using distance learning techniques, represents in Brazil is not an option motivated by pedagogical choice, but rather the only avenue legally permitted in the field of formal, degree-granting higher education.

In this paper we examine the contributions of the “Calculadora para Otimização Linear” (Calculadora LOpt) to be inserted as a tool to support the teaching and learning process of the operational research discipline. The study involved a coordinating teacher, a student, two teachers who applied the questionnaire to students from different courses of two private higher education institutions in the state of Goiás in Brazil. A questionnaire was developed, which was applied in two graduation groups constituted of 81 participants. The analysis and interpretations of the data generated evidence that the use of software in solving linear optimization problems through the simplex method contributes significantly to the teaching and learning process of this discipline, since it facilitates problem solving and creates an interactive learning environment.

The face-to-face mode is always considered as the normal mode of teaching, and distance education is often understood as a remedy for the lack of material and human resources necessary to conduct training; but to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID19), the distance course system has been launched in different countries to ensure continuity of teaching during the period when courses are stopped. In order to shed light on the role of distance learning during the spread of the coronavirus and its effectiveness in successfully continuing the learning process, an investigation was carried out in the Moroccan context. This survey was launched as a questionnaire with 565 participants; they are students and teachers from primary, secondary, university and professional training. The objective is to answer several research questions concerning the current use of distance education during the COVID19 pandemic. The results of this survey are presented in this article as well as their analysis showing that solutions and alternatives must be adopted in order to improve the teaching and learning process in the event of a situation like COVID19.
