This study investigates the response of standing passengers on public transport who experience balance perturbations during non-collision incidents. The objective of the study was to analyse the effects of the perturbation characteristics on the initial responses of the passengers and their ability to maintain their balance. Sled tests were conducted on healthy volunteers aged 33.8 ± 9.2 years (13 males, 11 females) standing on a moving platform, facilitating measurements of the initial muscle activity and stepping response of the volunteers. The volunteers were exposed to five different perturbation profiles representing typical braking and accelerating manoeuvres of a public transport bus in the forward and backward direction. The sequence of muscle activations in lower-extremity muscles was consistent for the perturbation pulses applied. For the three acceleration pulses combining two magnitudes for acceleration (1.5 and 3.0 m/s2) and jerk (5.6 and 11.3 m/s3), the shortest muscle onset and stepping times for the passengers to recover their balance were observed with the higher jerk value, while the profile with the higher acceleration magnitude and longer duration induced more recovery steps and a higher rate of safety-harness deployment. The tendency for a shorter response time was observed for the female volunteers. For the two braking pulses (1.0 and 2.5 m/s2), only the lower magnitude pulse allowed balance recovery without compensatory stepping. The results obtained provide a reference dataset for human body modelling, the development of virtual test protocols, and operational limits for improving the safety of public transportation vehicles and users.

Abstract Background This paper provides insight into the opportunity offered by shared autonomous vehicles (SAVs) to improve urban populations’ spatial equity in accessibility. It provides a concrete implementation model for SAVs set to improve equity in accessibility and highlights the need of regulation in order for SAVs to help overcome identified spatial mismatches. Methodology Through the formulation of linear regression models, the relationship between land-use and transportation accessibility (by car and public transport) and socio-economic well-being indicators is tested on district-level in four European cities: Paris, Berlin, London and Vienna. Accessibility data is used to analyse access to points of interest within given timespans by both car and public transport. To measure equity in socio-economic well-being, three district-level proxies are introduced: yearly income, unemployment rate and educational attainment. Results In the cities of Paris, London and Vienna, as well as partially in Berlin, positive effects of educational attainment on accessibility are evidenced. Further, positive effects on accessibility by yearly income are found in Paris and London. Additionally, negative effects of an increased unemployment rate on accessibility are observed in Paris and Vienna. Through the comparison between accessibility by car and public transportation in the districts of the four cities, the potential for SAVs is evidenced. Lastly, on the basis of the findings a ‘SAV identification matrix’ is created, visualizing the underserved districts in each of the four cities and the need of equity enhancing policy for the introduction of SAVs is emphasized.

This study analysed the landing performance and muscle activity of athletes in forefoot strike (FFS) and rearfoot strike (RFS) patterns. Ten male college participants were asked to perform two foot strikes patterns, each at a running speed of 6 km/h. Three inertial sensors and five EMG sensors as well as one 24 G accelerometer were synchronised to acquire joint kinematics parameters as well as muscle activation, respectively. In both the FFS and RFS patterns, according to the intraclass correlation coefficient, excellent reliability was found for landing performance and muscle activation. Paired t tests indicated significantly higher ankle plantar flexion in the FFS pattern. Moreover, biceps femoris (BF) and gastrocnemius medialis (GM) activation increased in the pre-stance phase of the FFS compared with that of RFS. The FFS pattern had significantly decreased tibialis anterior (TA) muscle activity compared with the RFS pattern during the pre-stance phase. The results demonstrated that the ankle strategy focused on controlling the foot strike pattern. The influence of the FFS pattern on muscle activity likely indicates that an athlete can increase both BF and GM muscles activity. Altered landing strategy in cases of FFS pattern may contribute both to the running efficiency and muscle activation of the lower extremity. Therefore, neuromuscular training and education are required to enable activation in dynamic running tasks.

This comparative study analyzes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on motorized mobility in eight large cities of five Latin American countries. Public institutions and private organizations have made public data available for a better understanding of the contagion process of the pandemic, its impact, and the effectiveness of the implemented health control measures. In this research, data from the IDB Invest Dashboard were used for traffic congestion as well as data from the Moovit© public transport platform. For the daily cases of COVID-19 contagion, those published by Johns Hopkins Hospital University were used. The analysis period corresponds from 9 March to 30 September 2020, approximately seven months. For each city, a descriptive statistical analysis of the loss and subsequent recovery of motorized mobility was carried out, evaluated in terms of traffic congestion and urban transport through the corresponding regression models. The recovery of traffic congestion occurs earlier and faster than that of urban transport since the latter depends on the control measures imposed in each city. Public transportation does not appear to have been a determining factor in the spread of the pandemic in Latin American cities.

To mitigate car traffic problems, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) issued a document that provides guidelines for sustainable development and the promotion of public transport. The efficiency of the policies and strategies needs to be evaluated to improve the performance of public transportation networks. To assess the performance of a public transport network, it is first necessary to select evaluation criteria. Based on existing indicators, this research proposes a public transport criteria matrix that includes the basic public transport infrastructure level, public transport service level, economic benefit level, and sustainable development level. A public transport criteria matrix AHP model is established to assess the performance of public transport networks. The established model selects appropriate evaluation criteria based on existing performance standards. It is applied to study the Stonnington, Bayswater, and Cockburn public transport network, representing a series of land use and transport policy backgrounds. The local public transport authorities can apply the established transport criteria matrix AHP model to monitor the performance of a public transport network and provide guidance for its improvement.

Currently, the trends in urban public transport have been changing over the years in developing countries for mobilization and accessibility development. Urban public transportation systems are the most popular in Selangor State, including big cities such as the Klang Valley Region. Objective measures of spatial pattern and hotspots have been used to understand how urban public transport development relate to open access. This method relies on specific spatial information and available web-based tool that shows the pattern primarily based on given vicinity and statistics connectivity. To date, several studies have finished tested in developed countries. In this study, we use Geographic Information Systems to analyse and consider hotspots identification precisely and efficaciously. Therefore, in this paper, we focus on two types of point sample evaluations – Gi* hot spot and point density analysis evaluation as statistical operations. Public rail transport was evaluated as a validation to describe the percentage of distribution of open access. The final result, GIS mapping capabilities to show that GIS's technology offers to the variation of urban public transport relate to public services, is to create maps and spatial interpretations.

Abstract Background: For many people public transport is the only mode of travel, and it can be challenging to keep the necessary distances in such a restricted space. The exact role of public transportation and risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission is not known. Methods: Participants (n=121 374) were untested adult Norwegian residents recruited through social media who in the spring of 2020 completed a baseline questionnaire on demographics and use of public transport. Incident cases (n=1069) had a positive SARS-CoV-2 polymerase chain reaction test registered at the Norwegian Messaging System for Infectious Diseases by January 27, 2021. We investigated the association between use of public transport and SARS-CoV-2 using logistic regression. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) adjusted for age, calendar time, gender, municipality, smoking, income level, fitness and underlying medical conditions were estimated. Frequency of use of public transport was reported for 2 week-periods. Results: Before lockdown, those who tested positive on SARS-CoV-2 were more likely to have used public transport 1-3 times (OR =1.28, CI 1.09-1.51), 4-10 times (OR=1.49, CI 1.26-1.77) and ≥11 times (OR=1.50, CI 1.27-1.78, p for trend<0.0001) than those who had not tested positive. Conclusion: Use of public transport was positively associated with contracting SARS-CoV-2 both before and after lockdown.

ResumenEl objeto del estudio analiza las implicaciones de la liberización del transporte público en el desarrollo de las nuevas centralidades urbanas de la capital del Perú. Centralidades que emergieron en aquella ciudad popular autoconstruida, en donde la red de transporte público, basada en las denominadas “combis”, fue determinante en su evolución. De esta manera se reconsidera el trascendente significado de la relación recíproca entre la movilidad y la estructuración urbana. Vinculando el proceso de crecimiento urbano disperso, la estructuración vial, los conglomerados productivos, y las características de la movilidad en el tiempo; y de como estos, han contribuido a configurar la morfología y dinámica urbana de la ciudad, entendiendo desde este enfoque, el modelo urbano en Lima entre finales del siglo XX y principios del siglo XXI. La investigación utiliza un método principalmente cuantitativo para demostrar la relación entre movilidad y estructuración urbana, y de cómo esta proporción está relacionada con la concentración económica. Para ello se ha desarrollado un modelo de conectividad y accesibilidad hacia y desde las centralidades estudiadas. In this way the transcendent meaning of the reciprocal relationship between mobility and urban structuring is reconsidered. Linking the process of dispersed urban growth, road structuring, productive conglomerates, and the characteristics of mobility over time; and how these have contributed to shape the urban morphology and dynamics of the city, understanding from this approach the urban model in Lima between the end of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first century. The research uses a mainly quantitative method to demonstrate the relationship between mobility and urban structuring, and how this proportion is related to economic concentration. For this, a model of connectivity and accessibility has been developed to and from the centralities studied. In this way the mobility-transport component is taken as a conditioner in the urban and territorial processes, that in contrast to the centralities associated to suburban motorway nodes of highly motorized societies, in Lima, is the system of public transportation "combis" Is who reinforces these centralities. ResumenEl transporte público y el desplazamiento a pie en las ciudades son elementos clave para el desarrollo sostenible. Distintas ciudades han optado por la implementación de sistemas de transporte público masivo para mejorar la movilidad y promover un desarrollo sostenible. Diversos autores han hablado de la importancia de la marcha a pie como parte de los viajes en transporte público. Los radios de cobertura de las estaciones de metro en distintas ocasiones podrían considerar un aumento del desplazamiento a pie. La investigación se centra en aumentar la caminabilidad alrededor de las estaciones de metro en Quito, de manera que, el caminar puede cumplir una función de co-modalidad para el transporte público. A partir del análisis de la accesibilidad, la densidad y la diversidad de usos se propone una metodología que permite demostrar la validez de las variables seleccionadas para fomentar la caminabilidad en un punto de conexión con transporte público en un entorno urbano en su mayor parte consolidado.AbstractPublic transportation and pedestrian movement in cities are key elements for sustainable development. Different cities have opted for the implementation of massive public transport systems to improve mobility and promote sustainable development. Several authors have talked about the importance of pedestrian movement as part of public transport trips. The investigation focuses on increasing the walkability around the stations of metro in Quito in order to promote walking as a function of co-modality for public transport. A methodology is proposed to demonstrate the validity of the selected variables to promote walkability at a point of connection with public transport in an urban environment for the most part consolidated.

Public transport coverage fails to keep pace with urbanization and urban expansion, which makes the “last kilometer" problem of residents’ travel increasingly prominent”. However, the practice has proved that microcirculation public transportation plays an important role in expanding the coverage of public transportation and promoting the integration of public transportation. Therefore, this paper takes a city bus community as an example. Firstly, it analyses the bus travel demand of commuters connecting to the subway station during the early workday rush hours on basis of IC Big Data, obtains candidate stations of microcirculation bus lines through K-means clustering. Secondly, it establishes the model, the target of which is to minimize  the cost residents' travel and bus operation, under the limited condition of walking distance, passenger number, station spacing and departure frequency. Finally, the genetic algorithm is used to find the optimal solution of the model, so it’s no doubt that the most feasible circular bus route is obtained. The results have positive significance for promoting the construction and operation of public transport integration and promoting the convenience and efficiency of public transport travel.
