Ordered and patterned micro/nanostructure arrays have emerged as powerful platforms for optoelectronic devices due to their unique ordered-dependent optical properties. Among various structures, grating structure is widely applied because of its simple fabrication process, easy adjusting of size and morph, and efficient light trapping. Herein, we summarized recent developments of light management with grating structures in optoelectronic devices. Typical mechanisms about the grating structures in optoelectronic devices have been reviewed. Moreover, the applications of grating structures in various optoelectronic devices have been presented. Meanwhile, the remaining bottlenecks and perspectives for future development have been discussed.

AbstractTopological insulators (TIs) possess exciting nonlinear optical properties due to presence of metallic surface states with the Dirac fermions and are predicted as a promising material for broadspectral phodotection ranging from UV (ultraviolet) to deep IR (infrared) or terahertz range. The recent experimental reports demonstrating nonlinear optical properties are mostly carried out on non-flexible substrates and there is a huge demand for the fabrication of high performing flexible optoelectronic devices using new exotic materials due to their potential applications in wearable devices, communications, sensors, imaging etc. Here first time we integrate the thin films of TIs (Bi2Te3) with the flexible PET (polyethylene terephthalate) substrate and report the strong light absorption properties in these devices. Owing to small band gap material, evolving bulk and gapless surface state conduction, we observe high responsivity and detectivity at NIR (near infrared) wavelengths (39 A/W, 6.1 × 108 Jones for 1064 nm and 58 A/W, 6.1 × 108 Jones for 1550 nm). TIs based flexible devices show that photocurrent is linearly dependent on the incident laser power and applied bias voltage. Devices also show very fast response and decay times. Thus we believe that the superior optoelectronic properties reported here pave the way for making TIs based flexible optoelectronic devices.

The service life of rails would be remarkably reduced owing to the increase of axle load, which can induce the occurrence of damages such as cracks, collapse, fat edges, etc. Laser cladding, which can enhance the mechanical properties of the rail by creating a coating, has received great attention in the area of the rails due to the attractive advantages such as low input heat, small heat-affected zone, and small deformation. In this paper, recent developments in the microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of a cladded layer on the rail are reviewed. The method of process optimization for enhancing the properties of a cladded layer are discussed. Finally, the trend of future development is forecasted.

AbstractAn efficient utilization of the sun spectrum is a key issue in the field of thin-film silicon solar cell technology. Therefore, different strategies for enhanced light absorption were presented in the last years. In order to achieve a better understanding of light scattering at nanotextured interfaces the optical properties of a large variety of samples were studied. The angle resolved scattering behavior was analyzed by means of a developed ray tracing model. As an alternative to randomly textured substrates, the influence of periodically textured substrates on the light propagation in solar cells was experimentally and numerically studied with respect to improved light in-coupling and light trapping. Based on a deeper understanding a new tandem cell structure with a diffractive element between the top and bottom cell was developed. Finally, the influence of metallic nanoparticles on the cell performance was studied.

Graphene transparent conductive electrodes are highly attractive for photodetector (PD) applications due to their excellent electrical and optical properties. The emergence of graphene/semiconductor hybrid heterostructures provides a platform useful for fabricating high-performance optoelectronic devices, thereby overcoming the inherent limitations of graphene. Here, we review the studies of PDs based on graphene/semiconductor hybrid heterostructures, including device physics/design, performance, and process technologies for the optimization of PDs. In the last section, existing technologies and future challenges for PD applications of graphene/semiconductor hybrid heterostructures are discussed.

Photoluminescence (PL) measurements were performed on p-Cd0.96Zn0.04Te single crystals to investigate the dependence of the excitons on temperature. The activation energies and the longitudinal acoustic parameters of the excitons were determined from the temperature dependence of the PL spectra and were in reasonable agreement with the theoretical calculations. These results can help improve understanding for the application of p-CdxZn1–xTe single crystals in optoelectronic devices.

Abstract Silver nanowires (AgNWs) have attracted attentions form both academia and industry due to their outstanding electronic and optical properties. The AgNW-based devices for various uses were invented in recent years. It is well known that the sizes of AgNWs have a crucial effect on the performance of AgNW-based devices. However, how to synthesize AgNWs with controlled sizes is still unsolved. Researchers reported many methods to synthesize AgNWs with different sizes in the past decade. However, a review that focuses on the synthetic methods of AgNWs is very rare. The aim of this review is to summarize the recent developments that have been achieved with AgNWs, and many procedure details and results and discussions will be provided for practical use.
