ObjectiveMalignant breast cancer is the leading cause of death by cancer in young women. The study aimed to determine if breast cancer mortality among young women has increased between the period from 1996 to 2017 in Brazil.MethodsA time-series analysis of breast cancer mortality rate in young women (20–39 years old) was carried out. Mortality data, from 1996 to 2017, were collected from the Mortality Information System of the Health Ministry, and demographic data, from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. Trends in mortality were performed by Joinpoint Regression, the spatial distribution of the mortality rate was done with the QGIZ Software version 2.18, and Spearman’s correlation coefficient was used to correlate the mortality rates with the Human Development Index.ResultsThere was an increase in breast cancer mortality rates in young women in the majority of Brazilian states, with an upward trend in all regions. The correlation with the Municipal Human Development Index, income, and education had a significant impact on the mortality rate for women from 30–39 years old in both time frames evaluated and for women from 20–29 years old, only from 1996 to 2000.ConclusionThe data obtained in the study, showed that even though the breast cancer mortality rate of young women is lower than women over 40 years old, it has been increasing in all regions of Brazil, mostly for women from 30–39 years old, suggesting that this group should be included in screening programs.

Abstract Background Breast cancer is the fifth most common cause of death from cancer in women worldwide. In Brazil, mortality rates are increasing. Therefore, the aim of this study is to analyze breast cancer mortality between 2000 and 2018 in Mato Grosso, a Brazilian state in Legal Amazon. Methods Ecological study analyzing temporal trends. Data were extracted from the Mortality Information System. The selected variables were: sex (female), cause of death (C-50, in the 10th revision of the International Classification of Diseases - ICD 10), age (less than 50 years-old, equal or older than 50 years-old) and year of death (2000-2018). Resident population data were obtained from the Ministry of Health's database (DATASUS) for calculation of breast cancer annual mortality rates. Temporal trends were estimated using linear regression. All analyses were done in the STATA 14.0. Results Between 2000 and 2018, 2,276 deaths from breast cancer were registered in women. Of these, 756 (33.2%) in the youngest age group and 1,520 (66.8%) in the oldest age group. A statistically significant increase in breast cancer mortality was found for both age groups (p < 0.001). In the annual mortality rates analysis, women in the youngest age group had the lowest rate in 2003 (1.98 deaths/100,000 women) and the highest rate in 2018 (7.88 deaths/100,000 women). The oldest age group had the lowest mortality rate in 2000 (21.48 death/100,000 women) and the highest rate in 2017 (47.09 deaths/100,000). The mean mortality rate was 5.69 for the youngest age group and 33.19 for the oldest age group. The annual percentage of change was 33.31 for the youngest group and 62.49 for the oldest group. Conclusions There is a statistically significant increase in female breast cancer mortality rate in Mato Grosso, one of the Brazilian states in Legal Amazon. It is imperative to invest in breast cancer screening to enable the reduction of the mortality rate of the disease. Key messages Our study presents information of breast cancer in a state from Legal Amazon that has increased death rates by the years 2000 to 2018. Besides breast cancer is relevant in Brazil, this is the first analysis from this specific data, potential to support improvement in disease control.

Abstract PurposeBreast cancer is the second leading cause of female cancer mortality in the United States and breast cancer mortality in Asian Americans (AA) is rising by 1.5% per year. However, aggregated AA breast cancer death rates may mask important mortality differences in major AA groups.Population & Setting11,388 AA and 473,927 non-Hispanic White (NHW) females based on the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Vital Statistics System database 2003-2017.MethodsAge-adjusted mortality rates (AAMR) were used to estimate trends in breast cancer mortality in Asian Indians, Chinese, Filipinas, Japanese, Koreans, Vietnamese, and non-Hispanic Whites from 2003–2017, with attention to annual percentage change (APC) and proportional mortality rates (PMR).ResultsFrom 2003-2017, breast cancer deaths comprised 14.4% in NHWs, 13.7% in aggregate AAs, 19.8% in Asian Indians, and 18.6% of all cancer deaths in Filipinas. While NHW breast cancer mortality rate significantly decreased (APC -2.1; CI -2.6, -1.6; p < 0.001) from 2003 to 2017, aggregate AA mortality rates were unchanged (APC 3.07; CI -0.37, 7.8; p = 0.071). However, when disaggregated, breast cancer mortality in Filipina (APC 1.9; CI 0.8, 3.0; p < 0.002), Chinese (APC 2.1; CI 1.3, 3.0; p < 0.001), and Korean (APC 2.6; CI 1.0, 4.1; p = 0.004) women significantly increased. Breast cancer mortality rates in Japanese women decreased (APC -1.9; CI -5.9, 2.1; p = 0.3).ConclusionWhile the proportion of women dying from breast cancer were similar in NHWs and aggregate Asians, when disaggregated, Filipina, Korean, and Chinese women had increased mortality rates over the past 15 years. During this time, breast cancer mortality in NHW and Japanese women decreased. Understanding disaggregated breast cancer mortality rates in Asians may improve culturally-tailored outreach, prevention, and treatment strategies to reduce cancer deaths from this critical disease.

Background: Female breast cancer is known as one of the top five cancers in terms of mortality. Regarding contradictory reports about the mortality trend of this cancer and its association with the socio-economic status of the world countries, we aimed at assessing the global trend of female breast cancer mortality rate and investigate the relationship between its mortality rate and development status. Methods: The breast cancer Age Standardized Mortality Rate (ASMR) per 100,000 and Human Development Index (HDI) for 179 world countries were extracted, respectively from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017 study and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) database, for the period 1990 to 2017. The marginal modeling methodology was employed to analyze the global trend of ASMR and examine the relationship between ASMR and HDI. Results: The results showed a slightly constant curve for the global trend of breast cancer ASMR from 1990 to 2017 (around 17 per 100,000). Moreover, it was indicated that the ASMR is strongly related to development status. While countries with higher levels of HDI have experienced a declining trend of breast cancer mortality rate, countries with lower HDI levels experienced an ascending trend at this period. Conclusions: In general, the findings showed that mortality due to breast cancer is still a major health problem in total world countries. Hence, more efforts should be made to screen the patients in the early stages of the disease and promote the level of care, especially in countries with lower levels of economic development.

Objective: to analyze female breast cancer mortality trends in Brazil and its regions. Methods: female breast cancer mortality in Brazil and its regions was analyzed using mortality data from the Ministry of Health's Mortality Information System and the National Cancer Institute between 1991 and 2010. The variables analyzed were. proportional mortality from female breast cancer in relation to total deaths in women, mortality rates of the five primary locations of the neoplasms most common in women, and mortality rates for female breast cancer: Linear regression models were estimated to analyze mortality trends: Results: a growth in proportional mortality due to female breast cancer in Brazil and its regions was observed: In relation to the mortality rates for the five primary types of cancer, breast cancer persisted in first place in Brazil and its regions, except the North region, where cervical cancer was the most frequent: Rising female breast cancer mortality rates were observed for Brazil (p = 0.017), Northeastern (p < 0.001), North (p < 0.001) and the Mid-West (p = 0.001), regions, and declining rates for the Southeast region (p = 0.047), and stable rates for the South region. Conclusion: the results emphasize the importance of the disease in terms of public health in the country, reinforcing the need for early detection and appropriate treatment.

Abstract Background Brain cancer is a rare and deadly malignancy with a low survival rate. The present study aims to evaluate the epidemiology of brain cancer and its relationship with the human development index (HDI) worldwide. Methods This is an ecological study. The data on cancer incidence and cancer mortality was extracted from the World Bank for Cancer in 2018 (GLOBOCAN 2018). The incidence, mortality rate, and brain cancer distribution maps were drawn for different countries. We used correlation and regression tests to examine the association of incidence and mortality rates of brain cancer with HDI. The statistical analysis was carried out by Stata-14 and a significance level of 0.05 was considered. Results According to the results of Global Cancer Registry in 2018, there were 18,078,957 registered cases of cancer in both sexes, of which 29,681 were related to brain cancer. The highest incidence (102,260 cases, 34.4%) and mortality (77,815 cases, 32.3%) belonged to very high HDI regions. Results showed that incidence (r = 0.690, P < 0.0001) and mortality rates (r = 0.629, P < 0.001) of brain cancer are significantly correlated with HDI. We also observed a positive correlation between brain cancer incidence and Gross National Income (GNI) (r = 0.346, P < 0.001), Mean Years of Schooling (MYS) (r = 0.64, P < 0.001), TABLE (LEB) (r = 0.66, P < 0.001) and Expected Years of Schooling (EYS) (r = 0.667, P < 0.001). Results also revealed that mortality rate was significantly correlated with GNI (r = 0.28, P < 0.01), MYS (r = 0.591, P < 0.01), LEB (r = 0.624, P < 0.01), and EYS (r = 0.605, P < 0.01). Conclusion The results of the study showed that the incidence and mortality of brain cancer in countries with higher HDI levels is higher than countries with lower HDI levels, so attention to risk factors and action to reduce it in countries with higher HDI levels in controlling this cancer in this Countries are effective.

Background In Iran, trends in breast cancer incidence and mortality have generally been monitored at national level. The purpose of this study is to examine province-level disparities in age-standardised breast cancer incidence versus mortality from 2000 to 2010 and their association with socioeconomic status. Methods In this study, data from Iran’s national cancer and death registry systems, and covariates from census and household expenditure surveys were used. We estimated the age-standardised incidence and mortality rates in women aged more than 30 years for all 31 provinces in the consecutive time intervals 2000–2003, 2004–2007 and 2008–2010 using a Bayesian spatial model. Results Mean age-standardised breast cancer incidence across provinces increased over time from 15.0 per 100,000 people (95% credible interval 12.0,18.3) in 2000–2003 to 39.6 (34.5,45.1) in 2008–2010. The mean breast cancer mortality rate declined from 10.9 (8.3,13.8) to 9.9 (7.5,12.5) deaths per 100,000 people in the same period. When grouped by wealth index quintiles, provinces in the highest quintile had higher levels of incidence and mortality. In the wealthiest quintile, reductions in mortality over time were larger than those observed among provinces in the poorest quintile. Relative breast cancer mortality decreased by 16.7% in the highest quintile compared to 10.8% in the lowest quintile. Conclusions Breast cancer incidence has increased over time, with lower incidence in the poorest provinces likely driven by underdiagnoses or late-stage diagnosis. Although the reported mortality rate is still higher in wealthier provinces, the larger decline over time in these provinces indicates a possible future reversal, with the most deprived provinces having higher mortality rates. Ongoing analysis of incidence and mortality at sub-national level is crucial in addressing inequalities in healthcare systems and public health both in Iran and elsewhere.

Abstract Pancreatic cancer mortality is greatest in countries with a high and very high Human Development Index (HDI). The aim was to evaluate the pancreatic cancer mortality rates and trends related to HDI in Brazil by state. An ecological study was conducted on pancreatic cancer mortality in Brazilian states between 1979 and 2019. Age-standardized mortality rates (ASMR) and Annual Average Percent Change (AAPC) were calculated. Pearson´s correlation test was applied to compare rates over the 3 decades from 1986-2015 to verify correlation between change in HDI from 1991 to 2010. A total of 209,425 deaths from pancreatic cancer were reported in Brazil from 1979 to 2019. In men, ASMRs ranged from 2.9/100,000 in 1979 to 6.1/100,000 in 2019, with AAPC of 1.5% per year, and in women, ASMR ranged from 2.1/100,000 in 1979 to 4.7/100,000 in 2019, with AAPC of 1.9% per year. Mortality rates and trends increase with higher % of HDI improvement with a correlation between ASMRs and HDI above r>0.80. The mortality trends in pancreatic cancer were uneven increase in Brazil, there was an upward trend in mortality in both genders, but higher among women. Pancreatic cancer mortality trends were higher in those states where there was greatest increase in HDI, regions as North and Northeast. However, mortality rates remain higher in South, Southeast and Central-West of Brazil.

AbstractEmerging economy countries in epidemiological transition have been especially challenged in the fight against cancer. This was an ecological study that aimed to describe the temporal trend of cancer mortality in a Brazilian northeastern state with a medium Human Development Index using official Brazilian mortality data from 1980 to 2018. We calculated the mortality crude rate (CR) and age-standardized rate (ASR) based on official population counts and estimates. The Joinpoint Regression Program, National Cancer Institute, USA, was used to calculate time trends of cancer mortality. There were 34,214 deaths from cancer, excluding nonmelanoma skin cancer, in Sergipe. The overall cancer mortality ASR was 70.1 and 57.9 per 100,000 men and women, respectively. For the last five years, the leading causes of cancer deaths were prostate (21.3), trachea, bronchus and lung (11.7), stomach (6.5), oral cavity (5.4) and liver and intrahepatic bile ducts (5.1) in males and breast (13.8), trachea, bronchus and lung (6.6), cervix (6.4), colon/rectum (5.8) and central nervous system (3.6) in females. In addition, there was a significant reduction in deaths from ill-defined causes in the series. Our results show that although there has been an increase in cancer mortality rates associated with Western lifestyles, such as prostate, breast and colon/rectum, high rates of cancer related to poverty and infections, such as stomach and cervix, still persist in Sergipe.
