How to achieve business model innovation (BMI) has always been a focus topic in the field of entrepreneurship. Based on cognitive theory, this study takes new ventures as the research object to build a theoretical model to explore the impact of entrepreneurial cognition on BMI choice, its intermediary mechanism, and boundary conditions. We test our framework with a sample of 242 questionnaires; the empirical research results show that entrepreneurial configuration cognition, willing cognition, and ability cognition indirectly affect the BMI of new ventures. Strategic sensitivity (SSE) mediated the relationship between entrepreneurial cognition and BMI; knowledge diversity positively moderates the relationship between SSE and BMI. Machine learning algorithm research has found three prediction models for BMI of new ventures. By constructing a theoretical analysis framework of BMI from the perspective of cognition, the results deepen the relevant research on BMI of new ventures, clarify the source of unique characteristics and capabilities of entrepreneurs, provide a new research perspective for analyzing the impact mechanism of entrepreneurial cognition on BMI, enrich the research results in the field of “situation-cognition behavior,” and further clarify the important role of knowledge in the development of new ventures.

Purpose This paper aims to take International SPOrt (ISPO) as a typical case to study how exhibition organizers can reshape their relationship with users through business model innovation to answer the question that how enterprises can help the exhibition industry to upgrade and develop through business model innovation in the internet environment. Design/methodology/approach Faced with the development of internet technology, the impact of online platforms, the relationship between exhibition organizers and their customers are facing unprecedented challenges. On the basis of the literature review, this study analyzed the innovation of exhibitors’ business model from three modules: value proposition, revenue logic and cost base and how to reshape their interaction with users through innovation. This study systematically analyzed the innovation of the ISPO business model and the process of reshaping its relationship with users and dynamic interaction with a single case study method. Findings The main conclusions are as follows: the starting point of reshaping the relationship between exhibition organizer and users in the internet era is to re-understand the needs of customers, the key point of reshaping the relationship is to further cultivate the industrial value and the sustainability of the relationship lies in the customer life cycle management. Originality/value From the perspective of exhibition organizers filling the gap of case study in the field of the exhibition. In the area of the exhibition, previous studies rarely started from the perspective of exhibition organizers, but, this paper discusses the interaction between exhibition organizers, exhibitors and visitors from this perspective in this study.

This paper proposed a research model exploring the link among strategic flexibility, innovation openness, business model innovation, and introduced two moderating roles into this model. The result shows that innovation openness plays a partly mediating role between strategic flexibility and business model innovation. Collaborator ties negatively moderating the relationship between resource flexibility and innovation openness, positively moderating the relationship between coordination flexibility and innovation openness; The moderating effect of competitor ties is the same. In addition, the results of three interaction shows that the relationship between resource flexibility and innovation openness is negatively moderated by high collaborator ties and high competitor ties, while positively moderated by high collaborator ties and high competitor ties. It’s suggested that enterprises effectively integrate the relationship between internal resources with external competitors and cooperators according to their own strategic flexibility characteristics, embedded open innovation activities in business.

Purpose The paper aims to study the relationship between executives’ perceptions of environmental threats and innovation strategies and investigate the moderating effect of contextual factor (i.e. organizational slack) on such relations. It proposes a dualistic relationship between executives’ perceptions of environmental threats and innovation strategies, in which different perceptions of environmental threats will lead to corresponding innovation strategies, and dyadic organizational slack can promote such processes. Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on a survey with 163 valid questionnaires, which were all completed by executives. Hierarchical ordinary least-squares regression analysis is used to test the hypotheses proposed in this paper. Findings The paper provides empirical insights about that executives tend to choose exploratory innovation when they perceive environmental changes as likely loss threats, yet adopt exploitative innovation when perceiving control-reducing threats. Furthermore, unabsorbed slack (e.g. financial redundancy) positively moderates both relationships, while absorbed slack (e.g. operational redundancy) merely positively influences the relationship between the perception of control-reducing threats and exploitative innovation. Originality/value The paper bridges the gap between organizational innovation and cognitive theory by proposing a dualistic relationship between executives’ perceptions of environmental threats and innovation strategies. The paper further enriches innovation studies by jointly considering both subjective and objective influence factors of innovation and argues that organizational slack can moderate such dualistic relationship.

The aim of the study is to investigate the impact of business model innovation (BMI) on firm performance. The sample of the study consisted of 120 managers from Alban Al-youm Company in Jordan, a leading dairy company. Data were collected using a questionnaire administered to managers. Eighty-seven questionnaires were retrieved valid for the purpose of data analysis. BMI was measured using three components: value creation, value proposition and value capture innovations while company performance was assessed via self-rated questions about operational measures of performance. The results accepted the hypotheses that all dimensions of BMI had significant effects on company performance. That being so, the study contributed to the literature on BMI on company performance in the absence of such studies that use samples for Arab countries, particularly, from Jordan in one of the most vital industries, which is a dairy industry.

BACKGROUND During the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, a variety of machine learning models were developed to predict different aspects of the disease, such as long-term causes, organ dysfunction or ICU mortality. The number of training datasets used has increased significantly over time. However, these data now come from different waves of the pandemic, not always addressing the same therapeutic approaches over time as well as changing outcomes between two waves. The impact of these changes on model development has not yet been studied. OBJECTIVE The aim of the investigation was to examine the predictive performance of several models trained with data from one wave predicting the second wave´s data and the impact of a pooling of these data sets. Finally, a method for comparison of different datasets for heterogeneity is introduced. METHODS We used two datasets from wave one and two to develop several predictive models for mortality of the patients. Four classification algorithms were used: logistic regression (LR), support vector machine (SVM), random forest classifier (RF) and AdaBoost classifier (ADA). We also performed a mutual prediction on the data of that wave which was not used for training. Then, we compared the performance of models when a pooled dataset from two waves was used. The populations from the different waves were checked for heterogeneity using a convex hull analysis. RESULTS 63 patients from wave one (03-06/2020) and 54 from wave two (08/2020-01/2021) were evaluated. For both waves separately, we found models reaching sufficient accuracies up to 0.79 AUROC (95%-CI 0.76-0.81) for SVM on the first wave and up 0.88 AUROC (95%-CI 0.86-0.89) for RF on the second wave. After the pooling of the data, the AUROC decreased relevantly. In the mutual prediction, models trained on second wave´s data showed, when applied on first wave´s data, a good prediction for non-survivors but an insufficient classification for survivors. The opposite situation (training: first wave, test: second wave) revealed the inverse behaviour with models correctly classifying survivors and incorrectly predicting non-survivors. The convex hull analysis for the first and second wave populations showed a more inhomogeneous distribution of underlying data when compared to randomly selected sets of patients of the same size. CONCLUSIONS Our work demonstrates that a larger dataset is not a universal solution to all machine learning problems in clinical settings. Rather, it shows that inhomogeneous data used to develop models can lead to serious problems. With the convex hull analysis, we offer a solution for this problem. The outcome of such an analysis can raise concerns if the pooling of different datasets would cause inhomogeneous patterns preventing a better predictive performance.

PurposeTo better understand factors that lead to business model innovation (BMI) in organizations, this study argues that inclusive leadership is the primary source that motivates employee engagement in boundary-spanning activities, which fosters BMI by generating and integrating employee knowledge through boundary-spanning exploration.Design/methodology/approachThis paper analyzes the relationships between inclusive leadership, boundary-spanning exploration and BMI to discover how they influence each other. This is achieved by a survey of more than 30 enterprises in Zhejiang Province, China. The survey data are analyzed using SPSS.FindingsInclusive leaders who display characteristics of openness, accessibility and availability have a positive effect on BMI and boundary-spanning exploration; openness and accessibility have more significant positive effect on BMI and boundary-spanning exploration.Research limitations/implicationsBecause this study covers only in Zhejiang Province, in China, the findings may not be easily generalizable to other contexts. Other factors, such as organizational structure and contextual characteristics, could also be added as antecedents in a future investigation. Moreover, the scales could be revised more suitable for China in the future.Practical implicationsThe empirical findings can be used as guidelines for firms seeking to take advantage of inclusive leadership and to help firms motivate their employees to engage in boundary-spanning exploration to acquire, generate and integrate knowledge from diverse sources to promote BMI.Originality/valueThis study provides insights that will be of value by adding to the theoretical foundation of our understanding of the antecedents to firms' BMI. This study argues that employees' boundary-spanning exploration is important to BMI as well. Inclusive leadership is crucial to stimulate boundary-spanning exploration by employees. Therefore, how to encourage inclusive leadership in firms is well worth examining.

Purpose Unlike the previous studies that examined the direct relationship between media attention on entrepreneurship (MAE) and entrepreneurship participation, this paper aims to examine the mediated link through entrepreneurial intention. Design/methodology/approach The cognitive theory of media provides the foundation for predictions that primary outcome of MAE is the entrepreneurial intention which in turn affects the different types of entrepreneurship participation (early-stage startup activities, new product development [NPD] activities and informal investment activities). The test of the hypothesized model relies on panel data for 2010–2015 on 40 developing and developed countries taken from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor report of 2015. Findings MAE has an indirect effect on two types of entrepreneurship participation (early-stage startup activities and informal investment activities) via entrepreneurial intention, whereas there is no direct or indirect effect of MAE on NPD activities. The findings also suggest when the entrepreneurial intention is added as a mediator in the model; the direct effect of MAE on early-stage entrepreneurial activities becomes insignificant. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study in its nature which established the relationship between MAE and entrepreneurial intention. In addition, this study also explained the mediation mechanism between the relationship of MAE and entrepreneurship participation by using the panel data.

This chapter utilizes cognitive theory to explain how entrepreneurial passion influences the speed of new venture's technology commercialization and explore the roles of cognitive bias (illusion of control and risk propensity) played in this process. The results show that both entrepreneurial passion and cognitive bias positively impact on the speed of technology commercialization. The authors also find that illusion of control and risk propensity play a partial mediating role in the relationship between entrepreneurial passion and the speed of technology commercialization. This conclusion can make up for the gap of existing theoretical research.

This paper introduces IoT categories used to build smart enterprises and discusses how Fortune 500 companies may use various IoT applications to innovate their business models. The authors' analysis reveals that there is a significant relationship between the type of IoT applications and the IoT adoption rate and there is also a significant relationship between the type of business model innovation and the IoT adoption rate. Finally, five implementation strategies for smart enterprise development are discussed.
