This study conducted wind tunnel tests with consecutive deflection angle changes on a three-dimensional (3D) wing with a control surface to procure aerodynamic data by sweeping the deflection angle. Configuration changes of a wind tunnel test model, such as changing the deflection angle of control surfaces, are usually performed manually with the ventilation suspended. Hence, the number of configurations that can be implemented within a confined test period is restricted; the aerodynamic data gained are discrete values. To accomplish continuous angular modulation would dramatically improve the ability by sweeping through the aerodynamic data in wind tunnel tests, enhancing the test system as a tool for discussing complex physical phenomena. Thus, this study created a compact remote feedback control system using optical measurement to continuously obtain high-precision aerodynamic data without stopping the wind tunnel, eliminating human operation. In particular, this study targets a 3D wing wind tunnel model with a control surface, which is more challenging to fabricate, miniaturizing the system in a model. The system consequently attained consecutive aerodynamic data multiple times under numerous configurations, which had been impracticable to reach in the past, within a wind tunnel test period of several days, thereby dramatically increasing the testing capability. The reproducibility was quantitatively verified by comparing the multiple data for the identical configurations. Furthermore, the reliability was demonstrated using discrete data obtained by conventional stepwise deflection angle adjustments. Eventually, the system was able to grasp physical phenomena involving hysteresis.

Liujiaxia Bridge is a truss stiffening girder suspension bridge which span is 536m, and it is the narrowest suspension bridge with the same scale, so the problems of flutter stability are prominent. Results of wind tunnel test show that its critical velocity cannot meet the requirements without any aerodynamic measures. Based on above considerations, seven kinds of aerodynamic measures are proposed, respectively wind tunnel tests are conducted. The results show that the program, in which the upper central stable board is 1.12m high and the under central stable board is 1.28m high, can meet the requirements. The results of this study provide some references to solving the problem of wind-resistant stability of narrow deck suspension bridge.

It is crucial measuring position and attitude of model to gain the precise and accurate data in wind tunnel tests. The model displacement videogrammetric measurement (MDVM) system and its key techniques such as the exterior orientation with big rotation angles and large-overlap, mark points, image processing and calibration based on the known distances are therefore presented. The practice example in Asia's largest (2.4m) transonic wind tunnel has demonstrated the MDVM system and its key techniques are correct and feasible, and they have application value.

We have developed a remote and precise feedback control system using optical measurement technology to alter the angle of a flap, which is part of a wind tunnel test model, automatically and to earn the aerodynamic data efficiently. To rectify the wasteful circumstance that Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)’s low-turbulence wind tunnel stops ventilation every time to switch model configurations, we repaired hardware for remote operation and generated software for feedback control. As a result, we have accomplished a system that dramatically advances the efficiency of wind tunnel tests. Moreover, the system was able to consider the deformation of the model through optical measurement; the system controlled flap angles with errors less than the minimum resolution of optical measurement equipment. Consequently, we successfully grasped the nonlinearity of three aerodynamic coefficients C L , C D , and C M p that was impossible so far.

Abstract Assessing the aerodynamic characteristics of long-span bridges is fundamental for their design. Depending on the terrain complexity and local wind conditions, episodes of large angles of attack (AoA) of 15° may be observed. However, such large AoAs ( above 10°) are often overlooked in the design process. This paper studies the aerodynamics properties of a flow around a single-box girder for a wide range of AoAs, from –20° to 20°, using numerical simulations. The simulations are based on a 2D unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) approach using the k − ω SST turbulence model with a Reynolds number of 1.6 × 105. Numerically obtained aerodynamic static coefficients were compared to wind tunnel test data. The CFD results were generally in good agreement with the wind tunnel tests, especially for small AoAs and positive AoAs. More discrepancies were observed for large negative AoA, likely due to the limitation of modelling 3D railings with 2D simulations. The simulated velocity deficit downstream of the deck was consistent with the one measured in full-scale using short-range Doppler wind lidar instruments. Finally, the Strouhal number from the CFD simulations were in agreement with the value obtained from the full-scale data.

Dielectric elastomers (DEs) are lightweight and high-power, making them ideal for power control in a planetary exploration spacecraft. In this chapter, we will discuss the control of an exploration airplane exploring the surface of Mars using DEs. This airplane requires lightweight and powerful actuators to fly in the rare Martian atmosphere. DEs are a possible candidate for use as actuator controlling the airplane since they have high power, and high efficiency. A structural model of a wing having a control surface, a DE, and a linkage was built and a wind tunnel test of a control surface actuation using a DE actuator was carried out.

Conductors with sector-shaped ice are susceptible to galloping. To prevent and control galloping, it is necessary to study the conductor aerodynamic characteristics. Wind tunnel tests were performed to study the influence of two shape parameters (ice thickness and ice angle) of a conductor with sector-shaped ice on the aerodynamic characteristics considering the roughness of the surface. In addition, the unstable areas for galloping are discussed according to Den Hartog theory and Nigol theory. The results show that with increasing ice thickness, the aerodynamic coefficient curves fluctuate more strongly, and galloping tends to occur; with increasing ice angle, the unstable area becomes larger according to Nigol theory, and the increasing drag coefficient will suppress the unstable areas according to Den Hartog theory. With the increasing two shape parameters, the most affected ranges of the aerodynamic coefficient curves are 150–180∘.

Despite the fact that the wind tunnel tests have been carried out on iced transmission lines subjected to wind load, it is not practical to do wind tunnel tests due to its high cost. This paper describes a detailed numerical simulation method that can be used to instead of wind tunnel tests. Based on the galloping mechanism of iced transmission lines, the aerodynamic test was simulated with the typical crescent super-large thickness iced four bundled conductors. One of the results highlighted in this study is that the wind angle of attack had significant influence on the aerodynamics of iced conductors. The Den-Hartog and O.Nigol coefficient were calculated to determine galloping of iced transmission lines, comparing with the reference of wind tunnel test in the Zhejiang university, the range of the wind angle of attack to the bundled conductor which can lead to gallop is larger than single wire, but the absolute value of amplitude is less than the single conductor, split conductor is more likely to gallop than single conductor.

Flutter is a dynamic instability problem represents the interaction among aerodynamic forces and structural stiffness during flight. The study was conducted to investigate whether deflecting the control surface will affect the flutter speed and the flutter frequency. A wind tunnel test was performed using a flat plate wing made of composite material. It was found that by deflecting the control surface at 45°, the wing entered flutter state at wind speed of 28.1 m/s instead of 33.4 m/s. In addition, the flutter frequency also reduced from 224.52 Hz to 198.96 Hz. It was concluded that by deflecting the control surface, the wing experienced flutter at lower speed and frequency.

Flutter is a dynamic instability problem represents the interaction among structural, aerodynamic, elastic and inertial forces and occurred when the energy is continuously transformed by the surrounding fluids to a flying structure in the form of kinetic energy. The study was conducted to investigate the relationship of the control surface deflection angle to the flutter speed and the flutter frequency. A wind tunnel test was performed using a flat plate wing made of composite material. It was found that by deflecting the control surface up to 45°, the flutter speed reduced almost linearly from 35.6 m/s to 22.7 m/s. The flutter frequency greatly reduced from 48 Hz without the control surface deflected to 34 Hz with the control surface deflected at 15°. After 15° deflection up to 45°, the flutter frequency reduced almost linearly.

By means of wind tunnel tests on the sectional models of Chaotianmen Yangtze River Bridge, some important results are obtained, including the aerostatic force coefficients with the changing of attack angles, and eight flutter derivatives for the bridge deck. The wind-resistant behavior of the bridge is evaluated.
