This paper focuses on the development of an explicit finite difference numerical method for approximating the solution of the inhomogeneous fourth-order Euler–Bernoulli beam bending equation with velocity-dependent damping and second moment of area, mass and elastic modulus distribution varying with distance along the beam. We verify the method by comparing its predictions with an exact analytical solution of the homogeneous equation, we use the generalised Richardson extrapolation to show that the method is grid convergent and we extend the application of the Lax–Richtmyer stability criteria to higher-order schemes to ensure that it is numerically stable. Finally, we present three sets of computational experiments. The first set simulates the behaviour of the un-loaded beam and is validated against the analytic solution. The second set simulates the time-dependent dynamic behaviour of a damped beam of varying stiffness and mass distributions under arbitrary externally applied loading in an aeroelastic analysis setting by approximating the inhomogeneous equation using the finite difference method derived here. We compare the third set of simulations of the steady-state deflection with the results of static beam bending experiments conducted at Cranfield University. Overall, we developed an accurate, stable and convergent numerical framework for solving the inhomogeneous Euler–Bernoulli equation over a wide range of boundary conditions. Aircraft manufacturers are starting to consider configurations with increased wing aspect ratios and reduced structural weight which lead to more slender and flexible designs. Aeroelastic analysis now plays a central role in the design process. Efficient computational tools for the prediction of the deformation of wings under external loads are in demand and this has motivated the work carried out in this paper.

This paper deals with stability analysis of clamped rectangular orthotropic thin plates subjected to uniformly distributed shear load around the edges. Due to the nature of this problem, it is impossible to present mathematically exact analytical solution for the governing differential equations. Consequently, all existing studies in the literature have been performed by means of different numerical approaches. Here, a closed-form approach is presented for simple and fast prediction of the critical buckling load of clamped narrow rectangular orthotropic thin plates. Next, a practical modification factor is proposed to extend the validity of the obtained results for a wide range of plate aspect ratios. To demonstrate the efficiency and reliability of the proposed closed-form formulas, an accurate computational code is developed based on the classical plate theory (CPT) by means of differential quadrature method (DQM) for comparison purposes. Moreover, several finite element (FE) simulations are performed via ANSYS software. It is shown that simplicity, high accuracy, and rapid prediction of the critical load for different values of the plate aspect ratio and for a wide range of effective geometric and mechanical parameters are the main advantages of the proposed closed-form formulas over other existing studies in the literature for the same problem.

A multiscale model that enables quantitative understanding and prediction of the size effect on scattering properties of micro- and nanostructures is crucial for the design of LED surface textures optimized for high light extraction efficiency (LEE). In this paper, a hybrid process for combining full-wave finite-difference time-domain simulation and a ray-tracing technique based on a bidirectional scattering distribution function model is proposed. We apply this method to study the influence of different pattern sizes of a patterned sapphire substrate on GaN-based LED light extraction from the microscale to the nanoscale. The results show that near-wavelength–scaled patterns with strong diffraction are not expected to enhance LEE. By contrast, microscaled patterns with optical diffusion behavior have the highest LEE at a specific aspect ratio, and subwavelength-scaled patterns that have antireflection properties show marked enhancement of LEE for a wide range of aspect ratios.

This publication presents the results of complex parametrical strength investigations of typical wings for regional aircrafts obtained by means of the new version of the four-level algorithm (FLA) with the modified module responsible for the analysis of aerodynamic loading. This version of FLA, as well as a base one, is focused on significant decreasing time and labor input of a complex strength analysis of airframes by using simultaneously different principles of decomposition. The base version includes four-level decomposition of airframe and decomposition of strength tasks. The new one realizes additional decomposition of alternative variants of load cases during the process of determination of critical load cases. Such an algorithm is very suitable for strength analysis and designing airframes of regional aircrafts having a wide range of aerodynamic concepts. Results of validation of the new version of FLA for a high-aspect-ratio wing obtained in this work confirmed high performance of the algorithm in decreasing time and labor input of strength analysis of airframes at the preliminary stages of designing. During parametrical design investigation, some interesting results for strut-braced wings having high aspect ratios were obtained.

Developments in high-speed electronic computers have greatly influenced the progress in fluid film lubrication over the past ten years. Static and dynamic oil film parameters have been computed for a wide range of finite geometries, for hydrostatic and hydrodynamic bearings lubricated by compressible and incompressible lubricants. These are either sufficient in themselves or else act as a yardstick against which approximate formulas may be tested. Much use has been made of iterative finite difference schemes, which are particularly well suited to digital computers, and these methods are now more fully understood. Other methods of solution include direct inversion of finite difference matrices and solution by expression of the pressure by some infinite series, a finite number of terms of which give adequate representation. Besides the increase in design data available, there has been substantial progress through a re-examination of the effects of modifying some of the assumptions inherent in most of the available solutions of the Reynolds equation. These include the assumption of constant lubricant viscosity, of rigid surfaces and of laminar flow. Major progress has been witnessed in two fields. The interaction of the lubricant film with elastic boundaries has been shown to be of prime importance in highly loaded contacts such as gears. This has led to the development of the special topic of elastohydrodynamic lubrication theory. The applicability of gas bearings in such growing industries as computers, space vehicles and nuclear reactors has resulted in great activity and progress in this field.

Traditional annular seal models are based on bulk flow theory. While these methods are computationally efficient and can predict dynamic properties fairly well for short seals, they lack accuracy in cases of seals with complex geometry or with large aspect ratios (above 1.0). In this paper, the linearized rotordynamic coefficients for a seal with large aspect ratio are calculated by means of a three dimensional CFD analysis performed to predict the fluid-induced forces acting on the rotor. For comparison, the dynamic coefficients were also calculated using two other codes: one developed on the bulk flow method and one based on finite difference method. These two sets of dynamic coefficients were compared with those obtained from CFD. Results show a reasonable correlation for the direct stiffness estimates, with largest value predicted by CFD. In terms of cross-coupled stiffness, which is known to be directly related to cross-coupled forces that contribute to rotor instability, the CFD predicts also the highest value; however a much larger discrepancy can be observed for this term (73% higher than value predicted by finite difference method and 79% higher than bulk flow code prediction). Similar large differences in predictions one can see in the estimates for damping and direct mass coefficients, where highest values are predicted by the bulk flow method. These large variations in damping and mass coefficients, and most importantly the large difference in the cross-coupled stiffness predictions, may be attributed to the large difference in seal geometry (i.e. the large aspect ratio AR>1.0 of this seal model vs. the short seal configuration the bulk flow code is usually calibrated for, using an empirical friction factor).

We present a new method for correcting the amplitudes of arrivals in an acoustic finite-difference simulation for elastic effects. In this method, we selectively compute an estimate of the error incurred when the acoustic wave equation is used to approximate the behavior of the elastic wave equation. This error estimate is used to generate an effective source field in a second acoustic simulation. The result of this second simulation is then applied as a correction to the original acoustic simulation. The overall cost is approximately twice that of an acoustic simulation but substantially less than the cost of an elastic simulation. Because both simulations are acoustic, no S-waves are generated, so dispersed converted waves are avoided. We tested the characteristics of the method on a simple synthetic model designed to simulate propagation through a strong acoustic impedance contrast representative of sedimentary geology. It corrected amplitudes to high accuracy for reflected arrivals over a wide range of incidence angles. We also evaluated results from simulations on more complex models that demonstrated that the method was applicable in realistic sedimentary models containing a wide range of seismic contrasts. However, its accuracy was reduced for wide-angle reflections from very high impedance contrasts such as a shallow top-salt interface. We examined the influence of modeling at coarse grid resolutions, in which converted S-waves in the equivalent elastic simulation are dispersed. These results provide some validation for the accuracy of the method when applied using finite-difference grids designed for acoustic modeling. The method appears to offer a cost-effective means of modeling elastic amplitudes for P-wave arrivals in a useful range of velocity models. It has several potential applications in imaging and inversion.

The large-diameter monopiles are the most preferred foundation used in offshore wind farms. However, the influence of pile diameter and aspect ratio on the lateral bearing behavior of monopiles in sand with different relative densities has not been systematically studied. This study presents a series of well-calibrated finite-element (FE) analyses using an advanced state dependent constitutive model. The FE model was first validated against the centrifuge tests on the large-diameter monopiles. Parametric studies were performed on rigid piles with different diameters (D = 4–10 m) and aspect ratios (L/D = 3–7.5) under a wide range of loading heights (e = 5–100 m) in sands with different relative densities (Dr = 40%, 65%, 80%). The API and PISA p-y models were systematically compared and evaluated against the FE simulation results. The numerical results revealed a rigid rotation failure mechanism of the rigid pile, which is independent of pile diameter and aspect ratio. The computed soil pressure coefficient (K = p/Dσ′v) of different diameter piles at same rotation is a function of z/L (z is depth) rather than z/D. The force–moment diagrams at different deflections were quantified in sands of different relative density. Based on the observed pile–soil interaction mechanism, a simple design model was proposed to calculate the combined capacity of rigid piles.

Abstract Turbulent magnetically flows occur in a wide range of material processing systems involving electrically conducting melts. This paper presents a parallel higher order scheme for the direct numerical simulation of turbulent magnetically driven flows in induction channels. The numerical method is based on the higher order finite difference algorithm, which enjoys the spectral accuracy while minimizing the computational intensity. This, coupled with the parallel computing strategy, provides a very useful means to simulate turbulent flows. The higher order finite difference formulation of magnetically driven flow problems is described in this paper. The details of the parallel algorithm and its implementation for the simulations on parallel machines are discussed. The accuracy and numerical performance of the higher order finite difference scheme are assessed in comparison with the spectral method. The examples of turbulent magnetically driven flows in induction channels and pressure gradient driven flows in regular channels are given, and the computed results are compared with experimental measurements wherever possible.

Laser microprocessing is a very attractive option for a growing number of industrial applications due to its intrinsic characteristics, such as high flexibility and process control and also capabilities for noncontact processing of a wide range of materials. However, there are some constrains that limit the applications of this technology, i.e., taper angles on sidewalls, edge quality, geometrical accuracy, and achievable aspect ratios of produced structures. To address these process limitations, a new method for two-side laser processing is proposed in this research. The method is described with a special focus on key enabling technologies for achieving high accuracy and repeatability in two-side laser drilling. The pilot implementation of the proposed processing configuration and technologies is discussed together with an in situ, on-machine inspection procedure to verify the achievable positional and geometrical accuracy. It is demonstrated that alignment accuracy better than 10 μm is achievable using this pilot two-side laser processing platform. In addition, the morphology of holes with circular and square cross sections produced with one-side laser drilling and the proposed method was compared in regard to achievable aspect ratios and holes' dimensional and geometrical accuracy and thus to make conclusions about its capabilities.
