Amomum tsaoko is a perennial herb belonging to Zingiberaceae. Its dried ripe fruit is an important food additive, spice and materia medicai in Southeast Asia. For hundreds of years of cultivation, morphological variations have existed. The essential oil is one of the major active products of the A. tsaoko fruit and seed. In this study, we collected 12 populations in Yunnan province, and the correlation analysis of compounds was focused on the essential oil of A. tsaoko seed and its fruit morphological characteristics, geographical conditions, and locality of growth. The results showed that the difference in morphological characteristics between populations is greater than the difference within the population. High altitude areas are beneficial for biomass accumulation. Another interesting finding is that selecting specific functional or odor type materials could reference the morphologies of A. tsaoko fruit and seed. Furthermore, the qualitative and quantitative analysis of compounds in essential oil could be used to distinguish the producing area of the A. tsaoko fruit. These results are crucial in realizing the determination of botanical origin and evaluating the quality of A. tsaoko fruit. Meanwhile, it makes clear that various other studies on this plant deserve more attention.

Numerous articles on Salvia officinalis L. have been published regarding the composition of their essential oil. The considerable variation found may be due to the quality of the plant material as well as to the methods used for analysis. A simple GC-MS method was developed and optimized in the QbD approach, for the determination of sage essential oils. The optimization of GC-MS analysis was performed using different mobile phase flows, injection volumes, split ratios and temperature programs. The optimized method proved to be simple and can be successfully applied for the determination of sage essential oils.

With the evolution of cultivation techniques, the world production of fruits and vegetables has been presenting a continuous growth. Despite the increase in production, a significant portion of the harvested products is mainly lost in the post-harvest due to several factors, such as inapropriate handling, transportation and conservation, lack of selection and classification, poorly sized packaging, among others. In general, the quality of fruits and vegetables is usually evaluated by the following parameters: size, shape, mass, color, firmness, ripeness, absence of bruises and pathologies. The objective of this work was to develop an application in Matlab to detect morphological characteristics (width, length, area, perimeter) of Mangifera indica L., ‘Tommy Atkins’ mangos from images, and using the same images, estimate its weigth. The images of the mangoes were acquired with a digital camera attached to an illuminated box and later processed in an application developed in Matlab. The images showed the morphological characteristics of the samples were obtained and an equation was determined to estimate their mass. The determination of the mass from the images had a 96% correlation with the actual mass measured with a scale and it was possible to obtain a reliable estimate of the masses of the mangoes from their images.

Abstract Preservation of milk is important as it relates to Capra aegagrus hircus (Alpine goat) milk DNA extraction. We examined the difference in concentration and quality of DNA resulting from the use of a preservation tablet (BronopolTM) versus a preservation solution by Norgen Biotek. When examining the concentration and quality of DNA in goat milk for studies using somatic cells from goat milk, it is ideal to use a substance that has a long-term preservation potential. The concentrations and quality of DNA obtained from goat milk was compared. Two separate trial samples of Alpine goat milk were obtained. The preservation tablet commonly known as B-14 or Bronopol™ was dissolved into one sample of milk. Another sample of goat milk without a tablet used a preservation solution from a Norgen Biotek. All DNA extraction methods followed the Norgen Biotek Corp. manufacturer's protocol. DNA quantity and quality was analyzed using a Thermo Scientific NanodropLite spectrophotometer. The study showed that the traditional Bronopol™ was a better method of preserving and maintaining the integrity of DNA in the somatic cells that are present in Alpine goat milk. This is based on the results obtained following determination of quantity and A260/A280 readings for quality assessment. Thus, the use of Bronopol™ is the preferred method of preserving goat milk for DNA extraction.

Now the increasing popularity is received by food semi-finished products from the bulk materials. With increase in volume of their production it is expedient to mix powdery materials in the mixers of continuous action. For the set working hours of the mixers of continuous action the movement of material in the device is considered to be casual stationary processes between which there is relationship of cause and effect. Key indicators for her assessment is the correlation coefficient, population mean and dispersion. Communication between entering and going out of the device signals is established by means of the equations of material balance, describing expenses of streams of bulk stochastic stationary functions X (t). Further, finding probabilistic characteristics of the entering and leaving signals, it is possible to judge "quality" of operation of the mixer or to select the required topology of streams in the hardware environment by comparison of the relations of their dispersions or mean square deviations. In this work the scheme of the movement of material streams in the mixer developed by us realizing a method of "consecutive dilution" is considered. By means of the system of the equations of the material balance displaying process of the movement of material in the mixers of continuous action of vibration type influence of recirculation on the smoothing properties of the device is considered. Values of size of the smoothing ability of S from recirculation coefficient ? and quantities of rounds of n are given. It is revealed that increase in the smoothing ability leads to increase of quantity of rounds, and respectively and dimensions of the mixers of continuous action of vibration type, therefore, it is expedient to use the mixer with quantity of rounds equal 6 and coefficient of recirculation equal 0.7 as at the same time the smoothing ability equal is enough 1753 for receiving qualitative ready mix at a ratio of components 1:50. By means of the correlation analysis it is possible to predict uniformity of a material stream at the device exit at the known values of the time spent in him of material, coefficients of recirculation and dispersion of an entrance signal.

Dependently on planting conditions caraway fruits contain 1–9% of essential oils consisting of about 30 compounds. Carvone and limonene account for the main portion, about 95%. To evaluate the quality of various registered caraway (Carum carvi L.) cultivars (Kepron, Prochan and Rekord) planted during 1998–2000, regarding the effect of sample grinding and preparation, plant treatment and time of harvest, the amounts of essential oil and the carvone/limonene ratio were determined. Both whole and ground caraway seeds were extracted. As obvious from the results, SFE is not suitable for the determination of essential oils in whole seeds since the results are lower in comparison with those of ground caraway. The way of grinding was also examined. Of the three mills used, a splintery mill VIPO seemed to be the most suitable. Further, the amount of essential oil was studied in caraway gathered at the beginning of maturation (sample A) and at full ripeness (sample B) of caraway seeds. It was found that the samples gathered at full ripeness (samples B) had more essential oil. It was also concluded that the use of the regulator Roundup Bioaktiv during caraway maturation to unite the ripening of achenes in the main umbel and the first-order umbels, and the use of fungicides (Alert S and Prelude 10) affected positively the amount of essential oil in caraway. Possibilities of SFE application for the essential oil determination in small samples gathered during breeding were investigated. The results were used as a one of the criteria during breeding. Classical way of the essential oil determination does not allow this option. An alternative method for the isolation and determination of essential oils – supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) – was investigated in this study.

Abstract In SPECT, the reconstructed images are strongly affected by poisson noise, poor spatial resolution and bad contrast due to the radioactivity disintegration and procedures acquisition. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to improve the traditional FBP reconstruction and to choose the most suitable technique for bone SPECT image denoising. The proposed approach is composed of two steps. The first one consists of denoising the acquired sinograms using successively eight currently used filters in nuclear medicine: Wiener, Metz, Hamming, Hann, Shepp-Logan, Parzen, Butterworth and Gaussian combined with Butterworth filters. The second step is a simultaneous reconstruction of the axial slices using a new 3D FBP algorithm for each filter. A comparative study of these filters is tested and evaluated on a dataset containing thirty one bone SPECT image. The results show that the difference between these filters is statistically significantly different from each other (p<0.05) and the 3D FBP with the combination between Butterworth and Gaussian provide the best performance. The selected method is compared to three denoising methods. These methods are tested on a Shepp Logan phantom and bone SPECT images. Experimental results show that the 3D FBP reconstruction with the pre-processing combination (Gaussian (Std=0.3) + Butterworth (fc=0.47, ordre=3)) filter is more accurate and robust compared to other methods. It provides the highest performance in term of contrast, SNR, CNR ensuring a shorter processing time. It accelerates the reconstruction, reduces noise and artifacts while preserving detailed features. This approach could be considered as a valuable candidate to enhance the quality of the reconstructed bone SPECT image.

Zhejiang and Sichuan are regarded as two genuine producing areas of Ophiopogonis radix in China. To study the difference in the quality of Ophiopogonis radix from these two places, the contents of three reported bioactive saponins, that is, ophiopogonins B, D, and D′, in tubers and fibrous roots ofOphiopogon japonicusfrom Cixi city of Zhejiang and Santai county of Sichuan were quantified using HPLC-ELSD method and compared. Ophiopogonin B and ophiopogonin D′ content in tubers of HMD were higher than those in radix of CMD, whereas ophiopogonin D in HMD was about twice lower than that of CMD. Three ophiopogonins were all detected in fibrous roots of both HMD and CMD. Their averaged content in fibrous roots of CMD was about twice higher than that in tubers of CMD. Ophiopogonin D in fibrous roots of CMD was about five times higher than that of HMD. Our biochemical assay revealed that fibrous roots and tubers of CMD can be of an important saponin source, especially for ophiopogonin D.
