Tef (Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter) is an annual small grain, panicle bearing, C4 cereal crop native to Ethiopia, where it is a major staple food. The objectives of the present study were to characterize the responses of two tef genotypes to escalating phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) levels and to determine an optimum range for P and K at which tef performance is maximized. Two experiments were carried out in the Gilat Research Station, each testing two different genotypes of tef (405B and 406W), one experiment in pots in controlled conditions, and the other in the field. In both experiments, the highest grain yield increased until 6 mg L−1 P, and declined at 12 mg L−1 P. The decline was precipitous and significant in the pot experiment, and gradual and statistically insignificant in the field experiment. In the pots experiment, the grain yield increased until 40 mg L−1 K, with no significant decrease thereafter. The effect of K concentration was only seen in the grain yield and not in the size of the other plant organs. In the field experiment, grain yield was highest at 80 mg L−1 K, but it was not statistically different from 40 mg L−1. The effect of K on growth was only apparent at maturity and not at flowering.

SummaryEight amounts of nitrogen ranging from 0 to 210 kg N/ha were applied to two tall and one semi-dwarf variety of winter wheat in the spring of 1975 and 1976. The tall varieties were Cappelle-Desprez and Maris Huntsman; the semi-dwarf variety was Maris Fundin in 1975 and Hobbit in 1976. Interactions between varieties and nitrogen were few and small compared with the main effects. All varieties produced their maximum grain yields with 180 kg N/ha. The yield of the semi-dwarf varieties, but not the others, decreased slightly with more nitrogen.Cappelle-Desprez yielded less grain than the other varieties in both years. In 1975 the yields of Maris Fundin and Maris Huntsman were similar and in 1976 Hobbit yielded more than Maris Huntsman. The varieties had similar numbers of ears at maturity and similar patterns of tillering. The semi-dwarf varieties had most grains per spikelet, and hence grains per ear, and Cappelle-Desprez had least. The semi-dwarf varieties had the smallest grains. The semi-dwarf varieties had less straw than the other varieties and hence the largest ratios of grain to total above-ground dry weight. The decrease in dry weight of stem and leaves between anthesis and maturity was similar for all varieties. In 1975 the efficiency of the top two leaves plus top internode in producing grain was the same for all varieties, but in 1976 Hobbit was more efficient than the other two. There were some small differences between varieties in nutrient uptake that were not related to differences in growth. Maris Fundin tended to have a greater phosphorus and potassium content than the tall varieties. Hobbit contained slightly less nitrogen than the tall varieties at maturity, and had a smaller concentration of nitrogen in the grain.Applying 210 kg N/ha doubled grain yield in 1975. Applying nitrogen resulted in a largeincrease in number of ears and a small increase in number of grains per ear due to the development of more fertile spikelets per ear. Nitrogen decreased dry weight per grain, especially of the semi-dwarf varieties. With extra nitrogen, straw dry weight at maturity, shoot dry weight atanthesis and leaf area were all increased relatively more than grain yield, and stems lost moredry weight between anthesis and maturity than without nitrogen. The year 1976 was exceptionallydry and nitrogen had only small effects in that it affected neither straw dry weight nor numberof ears but slightly increased grain yield by increasing the number of spikelets and number of grains per spikelet. It also increased leaf area proportionately to grain yield. In 1975 nitrogen increased evaporation of water from the crop before anthesis but decreased it after anthesis, even though it continued to increase the extraction of water from below 90 cm.

A field experiment was conducted at the farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during November 2009 to March 2010 to study the response of three lentil varieties (viz., BARI Masur-1, BARI Masur-2 and BARI Masur-3) to Rhizobium inoculations to yield. There were three Rhizobium inoculants (Rhizobium strain BINA L4, Rhizobium strain TAL 640, and mixed culture) with uninoculated control and urea @ 50 kg ha-1. Phosphorus and potassium @ 26 kg P ha-1from TSP and 33 kg K ha-1 from MP were used as basal. It was observed that Rhizobium inoculation alone increased plant height, grain yield and crop residues yield of plant significantly compared to uninoculated control. Local inoculants BINA L4 performed better than the exotic culture TAL 640 in respect of yield. 50 kg urea ha-1 also recorded better results than control but not superior to any of the inoculation treatments. The highest seed (1,565 kg ha-1) and crop residue yields (3,303 kg ha-1) were recorded from the lentil variety BARIMasur-3 inoculated with mixed culture.Bangladesh Agron. J. 2014, 17(1): 41-46

A field experiment was conducted at Horticultural Research Station, Assam Agricultural University, Kahikuchi, Guwahati during 2009 to 2016 for evaluation of the performance of black pepper varieties/hybrids grown as mixed crop in 16 years old block of arecanut garden (Variety-Kahikuchi Local). Varieties such as, Panniyur-2, , Panniyur-4, Panniyur-5, Sreekara, Subhakara, Panchami, Pournami, PLD-2, Chumala, Karimunda and hybrids such as Panniyur-1 and Panniyur-3 were grown in three replications. Among the varieties /hybrids, Karimunda, Panniyur-5, Sreekara, Subhakara and Panchami produced higher number of laterals with more spread at six years age compared to the other varieties. Panniyur-5 recorded significantly higher number of spikes (210.3) followed by Karimunda (186.2); whereas the lowest was recorded in Panniyur-2 (62.8). The spike length was the highest in Panniyur-1 (16.4 cm), but was on par with Panniyur-1 and Subhakara. Sreekara recorded the lowest spike length of 10.2 cm. Three years mean dry berry yield indicated that , the yield was significantly higher with Panniyur-5 (1.25 kg/vine) followed by Panniyur-1 (1.15 kg/vine) and Subhakara (1.12 kg/vine) which differed significantly over the other varieties. Variety PLD-2 recorded higher oleoresin content (13.84%) and was on par with Panchami and Pournami. Piperine content was the highest in Panniyur-2 (4.65%) followed by Panniyur-1 (4.26%). Due to the mixed cropping of black pepper in arecanut garden, an improvement in the arecanut yield was observed (2.21 kg chali/palm/year) during 2015-16 compared to the arecanut monocrop (1.96 kg chali/palm/year) during 2009-2010.

ABSTRACT The evolution of the reduction in Asian soybean rust (caused by Phakopsora pachyrhizi) control by site-specific fungicides has been reported season after season. In a field experiment, the effect of prothioconazole solo and added to multisite mancozeb was evaluated for rust control. Treatments were evaluated in a factorial design of four prothioconazole doses and three mancozeb doses. In a set of treatments, three applications were performed in one soybean cycle and four applications in another one. The first applications were performed at GS V8, 11 days before rust detection, with 2.56% leaflet incidence, while the other applications were at 12 to 14-day interval. Rust severity was quantified, control was calculated in relation to the unsprayed treatment, and soybean grain yield was estimated as kg/ha. Fifty-one to 61% control was obtained with three sprayings and 68% to 70% control with four sprayings of prothioconazole alone. Over 80% control was obtained with at least 0.3 L/ha prothioconazole + 2.0 kg/ha mancozeb, corresponding to 75 g a.i./ha prothioconazole + 1500 g a.i./ha mancozeb. Reduction in P. pachyrhizi control by the use of the site-specific fungicide alone was confirmed, while the addition of mancozeb can recover the efficacy of the site-specific fungicide.

The low average grain yield (0.7 ton ha−1) of tef in Ethiopia is mainly attributed to low soil fertility, and inappropriate tillage and weeds control practices. Despite this, limited scientific information has been documented so far on their interaction effects on tef crop productivity in northern Ethiopia. The objective of this study was to assess the separate and interaction effects of tillage, fertilizer, and weed control practices on tef yield and yield components in the conditions of northern Ethiopia. A two-year study (2008-2009) was conducted using split-split-plot design with three replications. In the main plot, three tillage treatments: conventional tillage (6 times tillage passes) (T1), four times tillage passes (T2), and reduced tillage (single tillage pass at sowing) (T3) were applied. The fertilizer treatments in the subplots were: no fertilizer (F1); 23 kg N ha−1 (F2); 23 kg N ha−1 and 10 kg P ha−1 (F3); 23 kg N ha−1 and 2.5 ton manure ha−1 (F4); and 2.5 ton manure ha−1 (F5). The sub-subplot weed control treatments included farmer weed control practice or hand weeding (W1); 2,4 D at 0.75 kg ha−1 at five-leaf stage; 2,4 D at 0.75 kg ha−1 at six-leaf stage; 2,4 D at 1.5 kg ha−1 at five-leaf stage; and 2,4 D at 1.5 kg ha−1 at six-leaf stage. This study showed that the separate and interaction effects of tillage, fertilizer, and weed control practices significantly affected tef crop yield and yield components in both crop seasons. T2 increased tef yield by >42% over the other tillage and F3 increased yield by >21% over the other fertilizer treatments. Grain yield increased by >23% due to W1. This study thus suggested that promising treatments such as T2, F3, and W1 should be demonstrated at on-farm fields in order to evaluate their performance at farmers’ conditions.

ABSTRACT Weeds are among the main constraints to high grain yield on hexaploid oat (Avena sativa), but there are few herbicides registered for weed control on this cereal crop. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the impact of the iodosulfuron-methyl on grain yield of elite oat cultivars and investigate the mechanism of oat tolerance to this herbicide. A field experiment conducted in 2012 demonstrated there was no difference on grain yield between cultivars URS Guará and URS Guria, when iodosulfuron-methyl was used up to 4.5 g ha-1. Likewise, experiments from 2013 have demonstrated that iodosulfuron-methyl, at 5 g ha-1, did not affect the oat grain yield of the genotype UFRGS 14, but affected it on the cultivars URS Guará and URS Guria. In 2014, the oat grain yield of five cultivars, including URS Guará, URS Guria and UFRGS 14 was reduced by iodosulfuron-methyl even at only 2.5 g ha-1. The activity of the ALS enzyme, extracted from oat plants, was sensitive to iodosulfuron-methyl. The increment of the iodosulfuron-methyl effect on oat plants treated with herbicide-detoxification inhibitors (malathion + chlorpyrifos), or the reduction of the herbicide efficacy in plants sprayed with the stimulator of detoxification (mefenpyr-diethyl), suggest that iodosulfuron-methyl degradation is the mechanism involved on its selectivity to oat plants.

Teff is a staple and well adapted crop in Ethiopia. Weed competition and control have major effects on yields and economic returns of the crop in the country. Among the weed management methods, development and use of weed competitive teff varieties remain the cheapest and most sustainable weed management option. Ten teff varieties were tested for their weed competitive ability in two locations. Treatments were applied using a split plot design with three blocks at each location for two consecutive seasons. Hand weeding and non-weeded treatments were applied to whole plot treatments with teff varieties assigned as split plots within the whole plot. The main objective was to determine relative competitive ability among teff varieties. Results showed that teff varieties showed significant variation in their weed competitive abilities. The varieties ‘Kora’ and ‘DZ-Cr-387’ significantly reduced weed density, dry weight, and cover more than the other teff varieties. They also had the lowest yield losses with a loss of 6% in biomass yield and 18% in grain yield recorded from ‘Kora’ and a loss of 17% in biomass yield and 21% in grain yield recorded from ‘DZ-Cr-387’. Therefore, they showed the highest weed competitive ability compared to the other varieties.

SUMMARYData were obtained on 3028 lambs born during five successive years from 1961 to 1966 at Ras El-Hekma Desert Research Station in the Western Coastal Egyptian Desert. Breed groups involved in the study were Hungarian Merino, Syrian Awassi, native Barki sheep, and nine of their crosses. The characters studied were birth weight, weaning and yearling weights, pre- and post-weaning average daily gain and yearling greasy fleece weight. The effects of breed group, year of birth, sex, age of dam and type of birth on these characters were investigated.The results obtained showed that Barki lambs excelled Merino lambs in all the traits related to body growth. Merino lambs, on the other hand, excelled Barkis in fleece weight. Barki lambs also excelled Awassi lambs in all traits except birth and weaning weights. In all characters except pre-weaning gain, the first cross of Merino and Barki (½M½B) was markedly superior to all the other crosses and pure breeds. The two third-crosses, ⅜ M ⅝ B and ⅝ M ⅜ B, were similar to each other in their productive traits and were slightly inferior to the first cross. The two back-crosses, ¼M¾B and ¾M¼B, were markedly different from each other, the former being better than the latter. The three-eighths Merino group is suggested for developing a new strain of sheep for the semi-arid regions. The effects of the environmental factors on the six characters studied were all highly significant except for the effect of sex on fleece weight and the effects of age of dam and type of birth on growth from weaning to yearling ages. The most important factor affecting the different traits was year of birth. Type of birth and age of dam were important sources of variation only for the characters studied till weaning age, but became of little importance thereafter. The effect of sex was pronounced only on yearling weight.

Abstract A field experiment was carried out in Samawa desert (70 km west of Samawa city, Al-Muthanna governorate), during the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 agricultural seasons, to study the response of three Iraqi cultivars of wheat (Tamooz2, Ibaa99, Abu Ghraib3) to three planting dates (November 15, 1st December and December 15) under Samawa desert conditions. The results showed the superiority of Tamooz2 cultivar in all traits of the yield components, it gave the highest averages of grain yield, which amounted 5.75 and 5.89 tons/ha−1, weight of 1000 grains, which amounted 29.79 and 31.06 gm, and the number of grains per spike, which amounted 73.02 and 73.76 for the 2019 and 2019-2020 seasons, respectively. The date of December 15th also surpassed in the traits of grain yield, weight of 1000 grains, number of spike grains, and the highest grain yield reached 5.62 and 5.58 tons/ha−1 for the two seasons 2018-2019 and 2019-2020, respectively, and the combination (Tamooz 2 x December 15) gave superiority over the other combinations in terms of grain yield which amounted 6.05 tons ha−1 (2018-2019 season) and Ibaa99 × December 1 gave the highest grian yield about 6.10 tons ha-1 (2019-2020 season).

A field experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Station, Malnoor, University of Agricultural Sciences, Raichur on vertisols during kharif seasons of 2010-11 and 2011-12 to study the productive potential of pigeonpea genotypes in different planting geometry under protective irrigation. The experiment consisted of three genotypes (BSMR-736, TS-3R and Laksmi) and seven planting geometry ( 90 x 20 cm, 120 x20 cm, 120 x 60 cm, 120 x 90 cm, 150 x 20 cm, 150 x 60 cm and 150 x 90 cm). The experiment was conducted in split plot design with three replications. Results revealed that among three genotypes tested, BSMR-736 (1667 kg/ha) recorded significantly higher grain yield over Laksmi (1369 kg/ha) and TS-3R (823 kg/ha). With respect to planting geometry, 90 x 20 cm, 120x20 cm and 150x20 cm recorded the highest grain yield, net returns and B:C irrespective of the genotypes. The interaction between genotypes and planting geometry showed that the genotype BSMR-736 planted at 150X20 cm recorded the highest grain yield (2322 kg/ha), net returns (Rs. 64421/ha) and B:C (4.37).
