Micronutrient status is thought to impact on psychological mood due to the role of nutrients in brain structure and function. The aim of the current study was to investigate the association of vitamin C status with mood state in a sample of male tertiary students. We measured fasting plasma vitamin C levels as an indicator of vitamin C status, and subjective mood was determined using the Profile of Mood States (POMS) questionnaire. One hundred and thirty-nine male students aged 18 to 35 years were recruited from local tertiary institutes in Christchurch, New Zealand. The average plasma vitamin C concentration was 58.2 ± 18.6 (SD) µmol/L and the average total mood disturbance score was 25.5 ± 26.6 (possible score −32 to 200 measuring low to high mood disturbance, respectively). Plasma vitamin C concentration was inversely correlated with total mood disturbance as assessed by POMS (r = −0.181, p < 0.05). Examination of the individual POMS subscales also showed inverse associations of vitamin C status with depression, confusion, and anger. These findings suggest that high vitamin C status may be associated with improved overall mood in young adult males.

AbstractEnhanced intakes of fruit and vegetables have been associated with improved psychological well-being. We investigated the potential mood-enhancing effects of kiwifruit, a fruit rich in vitamin C and a number of other important micronutrients. Young adult males (n 35) were supplemented with either half or two kiwifruit/d for 6 weeks. Profile of Mood States questionnaires were completed at baseline and following the intervention. No effect on overall mood was observed in the half a kiwifruit/d group; however, a 35 % (P = 0·06) trend towards a decrease in total mood disturbance and a 32 % (P = 0·063) trend towards a decrease in depression were observed in the two kiwifruit/d group. Subgroup analysis indicated that participants with higher baseline mood disturbance exhibited a significant 38 % (P = 0·029) decrease in total mood disturbance, as well as a 38 % (P = 0·048) decrease in fatigue, 31 % (P = 0·024) increase in vigour and a 34 % (P = 0·075) trend towards a decrease in depression, following supplementation with two kiwifruit/d. There was no effect of two kiwifruit/d on the mood scores of participants with lower baseline mood disturbance. Dietary intakes and body status of specific micronutrients indicated a significant increase in the participants' vitamin C intakes and corresponding plasma levels of the vitamin. The results indicate that enhanced intake of kiwifruit by individuals with moderate mood disturbance can improve overall mood.

Abstract Introduction The prevalence of mood disorders such as depression is higher in individuals with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Previous studies have found no significant correlation between the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) and measures of mood and have only included participants who met diagnostic criteria for OSA. The current analysis sought to determine whether mood correlated with AHI in individuals with any AHI values including those that did not meet diagnostic criteria for OSA. Methods 31 volunteers were studied (BMI=29.2±1.0 kg/m2, mean±SE), free from medication and without psychiatric illness or chronic medical conditions with the exception of untreated OSA, uncomplicated hypertension (BP&lt;160/100), or obesity. Following 1-3 weeks of an 8h habitual at home sleep schedule, participants completed the POMS-Brief questionnaire (POMS-B) to assess mood after undergoing overnight polysomnography to determine AHI. Total mood disturbance (TMD) scores were calculated by adding the scores on the POMS-B for each mood state subscale and subtracting the score for vigor-activity. Results The average AHI was 15.3±3.1 (range of 1.1-74.1) events per hour. The average POMS-B TMD score was 21±1.5 (range of 4-46). There was a significant correlation between the POMS-B TMD score and AHI (p=0.037, r2=0.14). This result was also seen in only those individuals with AHI scores &gt;5 (p=0.002, r2=0.4). Conclusion In this sample, individuals with higher AHI values displayed higher TMD scores. These results differ from previous data that showed no significant correlation between AHI and TMD. This is the first analysis to demonstrate a correlation between TMD and AHI while including individuals who didn’t meet diagnostic criteria for OSA. However, the relationship between AHI and TMD was also significant in those with AHI&gt;5. More data on these measures with larger sample sizes and a more equal representation of AHI values should be gathered to provide additional evidence for this relationship. Serum ferritin, serum vitamin B12, erythrocyte folate, plasma vitamin C and plasma 25-hydroxycholecalciferol levels were measured in 208 men and 197 women, >75 years old and living in the community, in order to assess micronutrient status. Anthropometric measurements (height, weight, demispan and mid-upper arm circumference) were made and a 114-item questionnaire covering a wide range of health and diet-related topics was administered by an interviewer. Only 4% of subjects had a BMI <20, but the prevalence of marginal deficiency of the micronutrients ranged from 7% for Fe to 47% for vitamin D. There was no association between low micronutrient status (defined as being in the lowest third of the distribution of micronutrient status) and having BMI or mid-upper arm circumference in the lowest third of the distribution for any of the nutrients. Leaving food on the plate was strongly associated with both low Fe status and low vitamin D status. Having breakfast cereal less than once per week was strongly associated with low folate status, while having fresh fruit juice less than once per week, having had less than two portions of fruits and vegetables the previous day and believing that food is not important for health were strongly associated with low vitamin C status. Low vitamin D status was strongly associated with a wide range of general health and disability measures. Having a weekly household income of less than £150 was associated with low status of Fe, folate, vitamin C and vitamin D.

This study focused on the relationship between normal and abbreviated training sessions for young competitive swimmers and acute changes in mood. Several potential moderators of the relationship between exercise and mood also were examined. 25 girls and 23 boys, swimmers between the ages of 12 and 25 years, completed a shortened version of the Profile of Mood States before and after normal-distance and taper practices. An hypothesized interaction between distance training and acute changes in scores on Total Mood Disturbance was significant. During normal-distance practices, scores on Mood Disturbance increased from pre- to postpractice. Analyses of the individual subscales indicated that swimmers' scores increased for Fatigue and decreased for Vigor. In abbreviated practice sessions, athlete's scores on Total Mood Disturbance showed no change from pre- to postpractice. The specific subscales, however, showed positive changes for Depression, Confusion, and Tension. The mood changes related to practice distance were not influenced by the possible moderating factors of expectancy or performance times. Thus, even for highly trained competitive swimmers, exercising at or near maximal physical capability is associated with few positive changes in mood scores. Shorter-distance swims that do not tax endurance are preferable, if mood enhancement is a goal.

Background: Specific mood states were examined during the CrossFit Open, a consecutive 5-week fitness competition involving five separate CrossFit® workouts, to determine whether the unique design or strenuous workouts of the competition resulted in acute and/or chronic mood state alterations. Methods: Participants (n = 8) completed the Profile of Mood States (POMS) questionnaire one-week prior to the competition (baseline), prior to (PRE), immediately post (IP), 30-min post- (30P) and 60-min post-workout (60P) each week. Tension, depression, anger, confusion, fatigue and vigor were derived from the POMS, as was Total Mood Disturbance (TMD) and an Energy Index (EI). Results: Workout intensity exceeded 93% HRmax each week. No differences were observed between baseline and PRE-workout mood states across weeks, indicating little effect of the unique competition design. Significant (week x time) interactions were observed for TMD (p = 0.037), EI (p = 0.038) and fatigue (p = 0.005). Acute mood state fluctuations were consistent across each week, where mood states improved to and beyond PRE values 60-min post-workout. Conclusions: In competitors, the differences in workout design between each week did not influence mood states. This may be related to adaptation to this style of training, while the acute mood state alterations are likely due to the workout intensity.

Introduction: Ageing is associated with several physical, psychological and behavioral changes. These changes are closely related with global health and functional capacity in the elderly. Mood disturbances are common among the elderly and may significantly increase apathy, resulting in decreased habitual physical activity levels. Materials and Methods: The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the mood state and functional motor capacities of elderly women engaged in a public physical activity program in Brazil and compare them with physically inactive elderly. Thirty elderly women were included in the study and categorized into two groups: physically active group, composed of participants enrolled on a public physical activity program (n = 16, 69±5 years) and physically inactive group (n = 14, 68±4 years). Total mood disturbance was assessed using the Profile of Mood States, whereas functional motor capacity was evaluated with the Sitting and Rising test. Independent t test and Mann-Whitney U] were used to compare groups. Results: The physically active group had lower total mood disturbance (p=0.02), confusion (p<0.01), tension (p<0.01), hostility (p=0.05) and fatigue (p=0.01) compared to the physically inactive group. There were no group differences regarding vigor, depression and sitting and rising performance (p>0.05). Conclusion: Lack of difference in functional motor capacity between the physically active and inactive elderly may be explained by the absence of exercise systematization in these programs.

Abstract Objectives The study investigated the effects of blueberry consumption for 8 weeks on subjective mood states in men with type 2 diabetes. Methods In a double-blind, parallel randomized controlled trial, 37 men who are U.S. veterans (mean baseline characteristics: 67 years, range: 51–74 years; body mass index (BMI), 34 kg/m2, range: 26–44 kg/m2) were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 intervention groups. The interventions were either 22 g of freeze-dried blueberries (equivalent to 1 cup fresh blueberries) or 22 g of a placebo (matched in energy and carbohydrate content to the blueberries). The Profile of Mood States (POMS) was assessed twice using POMS 2 65-item questionnaire at the beginning (week 0) and at the end of the study (week 8). Increases in Vigor-Activity and Friendliness scores indicate a positive mood state. Increases in Total Mood Disturbance, Anger-Hostility, Confusion-Bewilderment, Depression-Dejection, Fatigue-Inertia, and Tension-Anxiety scores indicate a negative mood state. Results Vigor-Activity, Friendliness, Total Mood Disturbance, Anger-Hostility, Confusion-Bewilderment, Depression-Dejection, Fatigue-Inertia and Tension-Anxiety scores were not significantly different after 8 weeks of consumption of blueberries compared with the placebo. Total Mood Disturbance (38.7 ± 1.8 vs. 41.1 ± 2.5, respectively; P = 0.034) and Confusion-Bewilderment (37.3 ± 2.1 vs. 41.6 ± 3.0, respectively; P = 0.044) scores were significantly lower for those consuming blueberries for 8 weeks compared with the placebo in subgroup analysis of men with lower baseline Total Mood Disturbance scores (&lt;45). Conclusions Consumption of 22 g freeze-dried blueberries for 8 weeks may beneficially affect some mood states in men with type 2 diabetes. Atherosclerosis is a pro-oxidative and pro-inflammatory disease state, which is the underlying cause of most cardiovascular events, estimated to affect 5.2% of the Australian population. Diet, and specifically vitamin C, through its antioxidant properties can play a role in impeding the development and progression of atherosclerosis. This systematic review conducted comprehensive searches in Medline, Emcare, Scopus, PubMed, and Cochrane using key search terms for vitamin C, plasma vitamin C, supplementation, and cardiovascular disease (CVD). The results demonstrated that vitamin C supplementation resulted in a significant increase in vitamin C levels in populations with or without CVD, except for one study on the CVD population. It was also seen that the healthy population baseline and post-intervention vitamin C levels were high compared to the CVD population. However, further research is indicated for CVD population groups with varying baseline vitamin C levels, such as low baseline vitamin C, within a more representative elderly cohort in order to formulate and update vitamin C repletion guidelines.

AbstractThere are limited proven therapeutic options for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. We underwent an observational study with the aim of measure plasma vitamin C levels in a population of critically ill COVID-19 adult patients who met ARDS criteria according to the Berlin definition. This epidemiological study brings to light that up to 82% had low Vitamin C values. Notwithstanding the limitation that this is a single-center study, it nevertheless shows an important issue. Given the potential role of vitamin C in sepsis and ARDS, there is gathering interest of whether supplementation could be beneficial in COVID-19.
