Key performance indicators (KPIs) are commonly used in the wind industry to support decision-making and to prioritize the work throughout a wind turbine portfolio. Still, there is little knowledge of the uncertainties of KPIs. This article intends to shed some light on the uncertainty and reliability of KPIs in general and performance KPIs in particular. For this purpose, different uncertainty causes are discussed, and three data handling related uncertainty causes are analyzed in detail for five KPIs. A local sensitivity analysis is followed by a more detailed analysis of the related uncertainties. The work bases on different sets of operational data, which are manipulated in a large number of experiments to carry out an empirical uncertainty analysis. The results show that changes in the data resolution, data availability, as well as missing inputs, can cause considerable uncertainties. These uncertainties can be reduced or even mitigated by simple measures in many cases. This article provides a comprehensive list of statements and recommendations to estimate the relevance of data handling related KPI uncertainties in the day-to-day work as well as approaches to correct KPIs for systematic deviations and simple steps to avoid pitfalls.

Purpose Managing efficiently educational Big Data, produced by Virtual Learning Environments, is becoming a compelling necessity, especially for those universities providing distance learning. This paper aims to propose a possible framework to compute efficiently key performance indicators, summarizing the trends of students’ academic careers, by using educational Big Data. Design/methodology/approach The framework is designed and implemented in a distributed fashion. The parallel computation of the indicators through Map and Reduce nodes is carefully described, together with the workflow of data, from the educational sources to a NoSQL database and to the learning analytics engine. Findings This framework was tested at eCampus University, an Italian distance learning institution, and it was able to significantly reduce the amount of time needed to compute key performance indicators. Moreover, by implementing a proper data representation dashboard, it resulted in a useful help and support for educational decisions and performance analyses and for revealing possible criticalities. Originality/value The framework proposed integrates for the first time, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, a set of modules, designed and implemented in a distributed fashion, to compute key performance indicators for distance learning institutions. It can be used to analyze the dropouts and the outcomes of students and, therefore, to evaluate the performances of universities, which can, in turn, propose effective improvements toward enhancing the overall e-learning scenario.

Pondok Pesantren  (Islamic Boarding School) is one of the oldest pedagogical institutions in Indonesia. Pondok Pesantren Assyafiiyah is one of Islamic BoardingSchools located in the area of Madura. To be a productive Islamic Boarding School (i.e.a boarding school which fits the need of pesantren), Assyafiiyah Islamic Boarding School needs to measure the performance of the employee. In this case, it is known as Board Performance which involves human resources, strategy, and performance. To produce a superior educational institution, the implementation of Human Resource Scorecard method that has a positive and significant effect on the institution of Assyafiiyah Islamic Boarding School is very necessary. It is used as an analysis of human resource performance. It is expected that this kind performance measurement system (i.e. Human Resource Scorecard) is able to provide the best solution in improving employee performance. Try Out is given and conducted on the institution to measure the performance system achievemet of its human resources. Therefore, the Key Performance Indicators which does not reach the target can be discovered. In other words, such kind of Try Out can be used to analyze the necessary refinement and improvement of the Key Performance Indicators previously mentioned. Based on the status quo, there are two major problems in this research: 1) how is the mapping of Human Resourse Scorecard?; and 2) what are the factors influencing the optimalization of Board Performance in Assyafiiyah Islamic Boarding School through Human Resource Scorecard?

Noise is the most frequent reason for complaints about environmental conditions in the workplace. It is associated with individual health and well-being and decreased productivity and performance. This study identified a set of acoustic strategies for open-plan workplaces and examined a case study applying those to four open-plan offices in the United States. The set of measures was defined based on a literature review and a focus group interview with 17 experts. A total of four topics were identified as key performance indicators of proper acoustic environments in the open-plan workplaces. A total of 19 items were then developed within these 4 topics as the protocols for planning acoustic strategies for workplace health and well-being. In the case study, the level of acoustic performance for workplace health and well-being was highest in the Dallas office (27.5 points out of a total of potential 40.0) followed by the Minneapolis office (26.0). Both offices outperformed the other offices in achieving space planning principles to control noises and occupant noise control in open spaces for acoustical privacy. A further examination on the relationships between acoustic strategies and other health and well-being key performance indicators in these offices suggests that guidance to increase occupants’ auditory comfort, well-being, and performance should be sought by designers in a holistic and integrative way.

This project simulates the flow of pilgrims when they travel from Arafat to Muzdalifah. The system includes the roads network that connects Arafat to Muzdalifah, which is represented as a queuing system with different queue measurements that simulate reality. The system also includes different types of transportation, such as small and large buses and trains, all of which are represented as objects with different size and colors. All system objects carry specifications as their corresponding source system objects, and these specifications are based on data collected by the Ministry of Hajj. The primary objective of the system is to answer “what if” questions to support decision making to optimize Hajj traffic, which can be achieved by manipulating the system’s variables and then by observing the key performance indicators of the system. The system presents the experimental results as visual feedback alongside written reports with statistics and illustrations.

The importance of performance based benchmarking has become a necessity in a modern construction company and presents a constant challenge for the construction industry. The aim of this paper is to elaborate significance, role and types of Key Performance Indicators (KPI) in the construction industry and show how different management perspectives perceive the indicators. A literature review was carried out in order to generate a listing of KPIs, used among academe and the industry. Afterwards, using surveys and semi‐structured interviews, the data was gathered from more than 30 South‐East European construction companies. Results were analyzed, producing a final set of 37 indicators. This study identified a low level of awareness of KPI models and performance management processes among the companies. Furthermore, the analysis showed a substantial difference in perception of KPIs among investors, consultants and contractors, which consequently led to a compiling list of KPIs. The top ten KPI's are: Quality, Cost, Number of investor interferences, Changes in project support, Time increase, Client satisfaction, Employees’ satisfaction, Innovation and learning, Time and Identification of client's interest. The paper concludes with final remarks and guidelines for the implementation of KPIs in practice. AbstractTo sustain competitiveness in contemporary, fast-paced markets, organizations increasingly focus on innovating their business models to enhance current value propositions or to explore novel sources of value creation. However, business model innovation is a complex task, characterized by shifting characteristics in terms of uncertainty, data availability and its impact on decision making. To cope with such challenges, business model evaluation is advocated to make sense of novel business models and to support decision making. Key performance indicators (KPIs) are frequently used in business model evaluation to structure the performance assessment of these models and to evaluate their strategic implications, in turn aiding business model decision making. However, given the shifting characteristics of the innovation process, the application and effectiveness of KPIs depend significantly on how such KPIs are defined. The techniques proposed in the existing literature typically generate or use quantitatively oriented KPIs, which are not well-suited for the early phases of the business model innovation process. Therefore, following a design science research methodology, we have developed a novel method for defining business model KPIs, taking into account the characteristics of the innovation process, offering holistic support toward decision making. Building on theory on linguistic summarization, we use a set of structured templates to define qualitative KPIs that are suitable to support early-phase decision making. In addition, we show how these KPIs can be gradually quantified to support later phases of the innovation process. We have evaluated our method by applying it in two real-life business cases, interviewing 13 industry experts to assess its utility.
