The fuel flow in the diesel engine nozzle has a vital impact on the fuel atomization and spray, and the fuel mass flux affects the internal flow of the nozzle. The visual experimental platform for a transparent nozzle was built to obtain the image of fuel flow in a nozzle with a small sac combining the back-light imaging technology and a high-speed framing camera. A two-phase three-component numerical model, based on the OpenFOAM solver, was calculated to quantitatively analyze gas ingestion and cavitation in the nozzle. The results indicate that at the end of injection (EOI), fuel cavitation and external air backflow (gas ingestion) occur successively in the nozzle, and both phenomena first appear in the orifice and then transition to the sac. Cavitation collapse is the major factor of gas ingestion, and the total amount of gas ingestion and cavitation mainly depends on the sac. The outflow of fuel largely depends on the total amount of cavitation and the inertial outflow of fuel at the EOI. The type of cavitation in the nozzle mainly presents annular and bulk cavitation, the former primarily exists in the sac, while the latter is established within the orifice. Therefore, larger mass flows will contribute to stronger cavitation and gas ingestion.

The fuel flow characteristics in diesel nozzle orifice are key factors to the atomization of fuel near the nozzle orifice. In the paper, two-phase flow model is used to simulate the complex flow features in nozzle orifice, and to study the influences of the relative position of nozzles orifice axis and nozzle axis, and inclination angle of nozzle hole on the internal flow feature.

Abstract In this work the performance of a valveless pulsejet with two different fuels and several fuel mass flows was numerically estimated. Results for pressures, velocities, traction and pollutant formation are presented. Even though this type of engine has many advantages over the conventional types, it still has many problems for application in civil aviation due to noise levels. Although having a very simple construction, operation is not completely understood, so studies continue to be made in order to have a better knowledge of the physics behind operation. For engine sizing, was performed a calculation procedure based on data of existing engines and equations reported in the literature. The pulsejet operation was then simulated using ANSYS Fluent 16.2. Simulations were 2D transient, three different fuel flows were analysed: 0.04 kg/s, 0.06 kg/s and 0.1 kg/s and two fuels used: propane and methane. For propane an additional case was defined, being the fuel mass flow of 0.12 kg/s. The results obtained are similar for the two fuels, the variables have the same behaviour with the variation of the fuel flow except for the operating frequency.

The article describes main provisions and relations for calculating short-circuit currents and phase currents in a three-phase traction transformer with a star-triangle-11 connection of windings, which feeds two single-phase loads in AC traction networks with a nominal voltage of 25 kilovolts. These transformers provide power to the enterprises of the agro-industrial complex located along the railway line. (Research purpose) The research purpose is in substantiating theoretical equations for digital intelligent relay protection in two-phase short circuits. (Materials and methods) It was found that since the sum of instantaneous currents in each phase is zero, each phase of the transformer works independently. We found that this significantly simplifies the task of analyzing processes with a two-phase short circuit. In this case, the problem of calculating short-circuit currents in the traction network can be simplified by reducing it to the calculation of an ordinary electric circuit with three unknown currents. (Results and discussion) The article describes equations for calculating short-circuit resistances for one phase of the transformer when connecting the secondary winding as a star or a triangle. The currents in the phases of the transformer winding at short circuit for the star-triangle-11 and star-star-with-ground schemes are compared. It was found that when calculating short-circuit currents, there is no need to convert the secondary winding of the traction transformer from a triangle to a star. (Conclusions) It was found that the results of the research can be used in the transition of relay protection systems from electromagnetic relays to modern high-speed digital devices, which will increase the operational reliability of power supply systems for traction and non-traction power consumers.

A study conducted on the high-speed diesel engine (bore/stroke: 79.5/95.5 mm; 66 kW) running with microalgae oil (MAO100) and diesel fuel (D100) showed that, based on Wibe parameters (m and φz), the difference in numerical values of combustion characteristics was ~10% and, in turn, resulted in close energy efficiency indicators (ηi) for both fuels and the possibility to enhance the NOx-smoke opacity trade-off. A comparative analysis by mathematical modeling of energy and traction characteristics for the universal multi-purpose diesel engine CAT 3512B HB-SC (1200 kW, 1800 min−1) confirmed the earlier assumption: at the regimes of external speed characteristics, the difference in Pme and ηi for MAO100 and D100 did not exceeded 0.7–2.0% and 2–4%, respectively. With the refinement and development of the interim concept, the model led to the prognostic evaluation of the suitability of MAO100 as fuel for the FPT Industrial Cursor 13 engine (353 kW, 6-cylinders, common-rail) family. For the selected value of the indicated efficiency ηi = 0.48–0.49, two different combinations of φz and m parameters (φz = 60–70 degCA, m = 0.5 and φz = 60 degCA, m = 1) may be practically realized to achieve the desirable level of maximum combustion pressure Pmax = 130–150 bar (at α~2.0). When switching from diesel to MAO100, it is expected that the ηi will drop by 2–3%, however, an existing reserve in Pmax that comprises 5–7% will open up room for further optimization of energy efficiency and emission indicators.

The traditional method for hydrodynamic journal bearing analysis usually applies the lubrication theory based on the Reynolds equation and suitable empirical modifications to cover turbulence, heat transfer, and cavitation. In cases of complex bearing geometries for steam and heavy-duty gas turbines this approach has its obvious restrictions in regard to detail flow recirculation, mixing, mass balance, and filling level phenomena. These limitations could be circumvented by applying a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach resting closer to the fundamental physical laws. The present contribution reports about the state of the art of such a fully three-dimensional multiphase-flow CFD approach including cavitation and air entrainment for high-speed turbo-machinery journal bearings. It has been developed and validated using experimental data. Due to the high ambient shear rates in bearings, the multiphase-flow model for journal bearings requires substantial modifications in comparison to common two-phase flow simulations. Based on experimental data, it is found, that particular cavitation phenomena are essential for the understanding of steam and heavy-duty type gas turbine journal bearings.

This paper presents an experimental investigation on a modified airlift pump. Experiments were undertaken as a function of air-water flow rate for two submergence ratios (ε=0.58 and 0.74), and two different riser geometries (i) straight pipe with a constant inner diameter of 19 mm and (ii) enlarged pipe with a sudden expanded diameter of 19 to 32 mm. These transparent vertical pipes, of 1 m length, were submerged in a transparent rectangular tank (0.45×0.45×1.1 m3). The compressed air was injected into the vertical pipe to lift the water from the reservoir. The flow map regime is established for both configurations and compared with previous studies. The two phase air-water flow structure at the expansion region is experimentally characterized. Pipeline geometry is found to have a significant influence on the output water flow rate. Using high speed photography and electrical conductivity probes, new flow regimes, such as “slug to churn” and “annular to churn” flow, are observed and their influence on the output water flow rate and efficiency are discussed. These experimental results provide fundamental insights into the physics of modified airlift pump.
