The COVID-19 pandemic has made it necessary for medical personnel to protect themselves from aerosol-producing procedures, especially during airway management. The tracheal intubation process has a significant risk based on the spreading of aerosol, especially when the medical service provider is very close to the airway of the patient. We have developed a novel conservation tent that provides a barrier for healthcare professionals and patients. Through a simulation study, the relationship between the use of the protection tent during intubation and the contamination of medical personnel before and after the movement of the protection tent was explored. A series of experiments in this article provide a theoretical basis for the verification of spray morphology during gas curing and droplet intubation. This inexpensive and simple method for using transparent cloth in the intubation of patients with unknown COVID-19 status can be applied by frontline medical personnel as an additional precautionary measure.

<p>Continuity of midwifery care has demonstrated some beneficial outcomes for mothers and their babies with no evidence of poorer outcomes. Much of the evidence to support this claim is sourced from research conducted with women described as ‘low risk’. The model of midwifery in New Zealand, which is based on continuity of midwifery carer, has the potential for midwives to continue care even when significant risk has been identified. This care would be provided in collaboration with and support from medical personnel and hospital-based midwives. There is no research that has specifically examined the outcomes for women with complex needs, also called ‘high risk’, who have been provided continuity of midwifery carer. Given the increased incidence of morbidity in the childbearing population it is important to examine this issue in some depth. This small piece of research begins this, by looking at how women with complex needs and who have had continuity of midwifery care have experienced this care.  The aim of this research therefore is to provide a comprehensive description of how women with complexities experience continuity of midwifery care across the maternity episode. A qualitative descriptive study was conducted in one part of New Zealand. Three women, all with varying types of complexity were interviewed. The interviews were transcribed, and the transcripts were analysed thematically. There were four themes: the relationship was everything; knowing what was happening was important; power was managed and balanced; and extra care was needed. The three women had the same needs and experiences of continuity as did low risk women described in the literature. However, another aspect, not previously reported, was that the women thought that the midwives spent a lot more time with them than they otherwise would have needed to. They were grateful for this.</p>

Background: The role of intubation is practiced in most respectful universities for many medical students, especially the paramedic and anesthesia students through controlled anesthesia simulation labs. Aim: The study aims to evaluate the learning outcomes of various types of intubation for paramedic and anesthesia students before and after studying two courses of airway management in the department of clinical technology. Methods: A model for measuring, comparing, and analyzing the fields of knowledge about skills and experiences obtained by the students is prepared. Students are enrolled from the emergency medical service and the anesthesia department of clinical sciences at the Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences at Umm Al-Qura University in Makkah Al-Mukarramah. Results: Psychomotor skills were the most important domain among students in EMS department, followed by airway compromise knowledge, intention or attitude, and effective communication.

BACKGROUND Serious public health problems, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, can cause an infodemic. Sources of information that may cause an infodemic include Internet searches and social networking services; YouTube, which consists of content created and uploaded by individuals, is one such source. OBJECTIVE To survey the relationship between YouTube regarding COVID-19 and Internet searches in Japan. METHODS We used Google Trends to survey the relationship between YouTube regarding COVID-19 and Internet searches in Japan. YouTube searches were performed on March 6, 2020 (before the state of emergency), April 14 (during the state of emergency), and May 27 (after the state of emergency was lifted), with 136, 113, and 140 sample videos evaluated, respectively. The Google Trends search was conducted from January 22nd to May 23rd, 2020. The main outcome measures were: (1) The characteristics of each video and (2) uploaded video and Google Trends. RESULTS Of the videos evaluated over the three periods, the total number of videos after removing duplicates was 331. Content related to COVID-19 was present in 23.3% of videos, content related to preventing the spread of infection in 20.5%, content related to treatment in 2.1%, and the other category represented 54.1% of videos. Only 9.1% of the videos were uploaded by healthcare professionals. In the periods before and after the state of emergency, with 7 April as the point of reference, there were 2.9 per day and 2.4 per day uploads before and after the state of emergency, respectively. Regarding Google Trends, before and after the state of emergency, there were 29.5 per day and 54.9 per day total searches, respectively. There were more videos of content related to COVID-19 in March than in April or May (p = .03, p = .03). CONCLUSIONS The information on COVID-19 did not indicate a relationship between the number of YouTube uploads and the number of Internet searches. Most of the videos on COVID-19 were created and uploaded by individuals. Therefore, people need to take great care when obtaining information from YouTube before or early in a pandemic, during which time scientific evidence is scarce.

Abstract Background Pediatrics residents perform a limited number of some procedures in the clinical setting and may benefit from procedure simulation workshops. Objective To examine (1) the number and types of procedures performed by pediatrics residents in the clinical setting, (2) the relationship between the number of procedures performed and self-reported procedural confidence and competence, and (3) the effect of a procedure simulation workshop on self-reported procedural confidence and competence. Methods Pediatrics residents at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford attended a half-day procedure workshop, rotating between 6 procedure simulation stations: vascular access, airway management, bladder catheterization, chest tube placement, lumbar puncture, and umbilical lines. Residents completed a survey immediately before and after the workshop to self-assess procedural confidence and competence. Results Seventy-two residents participated in a procedure workshop. The average number of procedures performed increased significantly from intern to junior to senior year. A positive correlation was found between number of procedures performed and preworkshop confidence (P &lt; .001, R2  =  0.86) and competence (P &lt; .001, R2  =  0.88). For each procedure assessed, completion of the procedure simulation workshop resulted in a statistically significant (P &lt; .001) increase in self-perceived confidence (14%–131%; average, 48%) and competence (12%–119%; average, 50%). Statistically significant (P &lt; .05) increases remained when results for interns, juniors, and seniors were examined separately. Conclusion Procedure simulation workshops improve resident self-reported procedural confidence and competence, particularly for procedures that are least performed.

Background: In our previous study regarding infection prevention after COVID-19, many Japanese citizen respondents had not received education/training on infection prevention. However, a total of 47.7% (n = 143) of these respondents wanted to receive education from healthcare professionals regarding the methods and effects of infection prevention. Therefore, changes in recognition of the roles of Japanese pharmacists before and after COVID-19 were investigated. Methods: We conducted a survey to determine whether recognition of Japanese pharmacists’ roles, especially their role in public health in the community, changed after COVID-19. Results: A total of 93.9% (n = 307) of the pharmacist respondents showed an increased awareness of infection prevention. Before COVID-19, the hospital pharmacists (67.2%; n = 80) were more aware of infection prevention than were pharmacy pharmacists (51.7%; n = 74) and drugstore pharmacists (47.7%; n = 31). The number of pharmacists who felt that the role of pharmacists in the community had changed after the pandemic increased, but the numbers of community pharmacy pharmacists (51.8%; n = 74) and drugstore pharmacists (55.4%; n = 36) were found to be slightly higher than those of hospital pharmacists (47.9%; n = 57). Conclusions: In a society in which swift responses and changes are required, for individuals to work as medical personnel their ability to respond while always being aware of the needs of society is required now more than ever.

AbstractMost listeners possess sophisticated knowledge about the music around them without being aware of it or its intricacies. Previous research shows that we develop such knowledge through exposure. This knowledge can then be assessed using behavioral and neurophysiological measures. It remains unknown however, which neurophysiological measures accompany the development of musical long-term knowledge. In this series of experiments, we first identified a potential ERP marker of musical long-term knowledge by comparing EEG activity following musically unexpected and expected tones within the context of known music (n = 30). We then validated the marker by showing that it does not differentiate between such tones within the context of unknown music (n = 34). In a third experiment, we exposed participants to unknown music (n = 40) and compared EEG data before and after exposure to explore effects of time. Although listeners’ behavior indicated musical long-term knowledge, we did not find any effects of time on the ERP marker. Instead, the relationship between behavioral and EEG data suggests musical long-term knowledge may have formed before we could confirm its presence through behavioral measures. Listeners are thus not only knowledgeable about music but seem to also be incredibly fast music learners.

This experiment investigated the relationship between mental rotation and sport training. Undergraduate university students (n = 62) completed the Mental Rotation Test ( Vandenberg & Kuse, 1978 ), before and after a 10-month training in two different sports, which either involved extensive mental rotation ability (wrestling group) or did not (running group). Both groups showed comparable results in the pretest, but the wrestling group outperformed the running group in the posttest. As expected from previous studies, males outperformed women in the pretest and the posttest. Besides, self-reported data gathered after both sessions indicated an increase in adaptive strategies following training in wrestling, but not subsequent to training in running. These findings demonstrate the significant effect of training in particular sports on mental rotation performance, thus showing consistency with the notion of cognitive plasticity induced from motor training involving manipulation of spatial representations. They are discussed within an embodied cognition framework.

In Uruguay, Lacanian ideas arrived in the 1960s, into a context of Kleinian hegemony. Adopting a discursive approach, this study researched the initial reception of these ideas and its effects on clinical practices. We gathered a corpus of discursive data from clinical cases and theoretical-doctrinal articles (from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s). In order to examine the effects of Lacanian ideas, we analysed the difference in the way of interpreting the clinical material before and after Lacan's reception. The results of this research illuminate some epistemological problems of psychoanalysis, especially the relationship between theory and clinical practice.
