This study explores the combined effect of NaCl and gypsum on the strength of the CaO-activated ground-granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) binder system. In the CaO-activated GGBFS system, the incorporation of NaCl without gypsum did not improve the strength of the system. However, with the presence of gypsum, the use of NaCl yielded significantly greater strength than the use of either gypsum or NaCl alone. The presence of NaCl largely increases the solubility of gypsum in a solution, leading to a higher concentration of sulfate ions, which is essential for generating more and faster formations of ettringite in a fresh mixture of paste. The significant strength enhancement of gypsum was likely due to the accelerated and increased formation of ettringite, accompanied by more efficient filling of pores in the system.

This study investigates the characteristics of alkali-activated slag cement using aluminium sulphate (ALS) as an activator. The alkalis NaOH and Na2SiO3 were used as additional activators (denoted by alkali) at 5% and 10% of the weight of the ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS). Three types of activators were considered. The first was when ALS was used alone. For the second, ALS and 5% alkali were used together. The third was when ALS and 10% alkali were used. ALS was used at concentrations of 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, and 10% based on binder weight. Experimental results show that when ALS was used as a sole activator, the activity of GGBFS was low and its strength was below 1 MPa. However, compressive strength was improved when 5% or 10% alkali and ALS were used at the same time. This was effective at improving mechanical and microstructural performance when used with an additional activator capable of forming a more alkaline environment than using ALS as a sole activator.

Energy saving in building technology is among the most critical problems in the world. Thus it is a need to develop sustainable alternatives to conventional concrete utilizing more environmental friendly materials. One of the possibilities to work out is the massive usage of industrial wastes like ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) to turn them to useful environmental friendly and technologically advantageous cementitious materials. In this study, ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) is used to produce of alkali activated slag (AAS) mortar with the effect of alkaline activator concentration. Alkali activated slag (AAS) mortar is accelerated using alkaline solution of sodium silicate mixed with sodium hydroxide. The fixed ratio of sodium silicate to sodium hydroxide is 1.7 and the concentration of sodium hydroxide is varied from 6M to 12M. Concentration of 10M NaOH promotes the best properties of mortar by achieving the greatest compressive strength. Substitution of mineral admixture also influences strength performance of AAS mortars. The mortar with 20% calcium carbonate demonstrates the maximum compressive strength. The used of alkaline activation system is the best method to prepare industrial byproduct concrete. Moreover, alkali activated product itself gains superior properties which lead to the system become the most interesting method to produce sustainable concrete.


Ternary blended Self Compacting Concrete (SCC) made with rice husk ash (RHA) and GGBFS (ground granulated blast furnace slag) has developed as a substitute to normal concrete. It has advantages such as less cement usage, energy usage, cost and for other ecological and socio-economic benefits. The current work quantifies the 3, 7 and 28-days cementitious efficiency for various percentages of RHA and GGBFS combination in SCC. The usage of GGBFS in M20 and M40 SCC reduces workability but increases compressive and tensile strength when compared with OPC based SCC. The optimum GGBFS is found to be 30% for low and medium strength levels of SCC. For M20 and M40, 30% GGBFS reduces workability slightly but still within desired limits. So after various trial mixes it was found that 27% GGBFS by weight of OPC and 3% RHA by weight of GGBFS quantity can be admixed to OPC SCC to achieve similar strength and workability and also better rate of strength regain in early days of hardening. In M20 and M40 grades of SCC, 3% RHA by weight of GGBFS quantity is replaced. Due to addition of GGBFS to SCC will enhance the later age compressive strength but early age compressive strength decreases while the desired workability is controlled using SP appropriately. This is true for all grades of GGBFS based SCC. In M20 GGBFS based SCC, the strength gain at 3 days is nearly 9% but the compressive strength at 28 days increased by 31%. In M40, GGBFS based SCC, the strength gain at 3 days is nearly 14% but the compressive strength at 28 days increased by 21%. RHA is added as replacement of cement to improve the early age strength of SCC. RHA addition to concrete as cement replacement may help to improve strength marginally but impacts the workability drastically so SP should be used controllably to attain the desired workability. In M20 GGBFS+RHA based SCC, the compressive strength enhancement at 3 days is 21% and the compressive strength at 28 days increased by 46%. In M40, GGBFS+RHA based SCC, the compressive strength enhancement at 3 days is 20% and at 28 days increased by 34%. Similarly tensile strength in all grades of GGBFS and RHA admixed SCC increases by around 15 to 34% in M20 grade and 9 to 36% in M40 grade SCC mix. So it can be concluded that RHA and GGBS combination principally yields early strength which is not possible in SCC mixes primary made with fly ash.

This article presents the influence of the properties of the materials in the geopolymeric mixture, ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) + wheat straw ash (WSA) + uncalcined red mud (RMu), and ground granulated blast furnace slag + wheat straw ash + calcined red mud (RMc), over the microstructure and mechanical properties of the synthesised geopolymers. The activation solutions used were a NaOH solution with 8M concentration, and a solution realised from 50%wt NaOH and 50%wt Na2SiO3. The samples were analysed: from the microstructural point of view through SEM microscopy; the chemical composition was determined through EDX analysis; and the compressive strength tests was done for samples tested at 7 and 28 days, respectively. The SEM micrographies of the geopolymers have highlighted a complex structure and an variable compressive strength. Compressive strength varied from 24 MPa in the case of the same recipe obtained from 70% of GGBFS + 25% WSA +5% RMu, alkaline activated with NaOH 8M (7 days testing) to 85 MPa in the case of the recipe but replacing RMu with RMc with calcined red mud, alkaline activated with the 50%wt NaOH and 50%wt Na2SiO3 solution (28 days testing). This variation in the sense of the rise in compressive strength can be attributed to the difference in reactivity of the materials used in the recipes, the curing period, the geopolymers structure, and the presence of a lower or higher rate of pores, as well as the alkalinity and the nature of the activation solutions used.

This work aims to investigate the effect of additional flue gas desulfurization gypsum (FGDG) on the properties of calcium sulfoaluminate cement (CSAC) blended with ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS). The hydration rate, setting time, mechanical strength, pore structure and hydration products of the CSAC-GGBFS mixture containing FGDG were investigated systematically. The results show that the addition of FGDG promotes the hydration of the CSAC-GGBFS mixture and improves its mechanical strength; however, the FGDG content should not exceed 6%.

To improve the application of low-quality aggregates in structural concrete, this study investigated the effect of multi-purpose mineral admixtures, such as fly ash and ground granulated blast-furnace slag, on the performance of concrete. Accordingly, the primary performance of low-quality recycled aggregate concrete could be improved by varying the replacement ratio of the recycled aggregate and using appropriate mineral admixtures such as fly ash and ground granulated blast-furnace slag. The results show the potential for the use of low-quality aggregate in structural concrete.

AbstractThis work aimed to evaluate the role of the addition of blast furnace slag for the formation of reaction products and the strength development of volcanic ash-based phosphate geopolymer. Volcanic ash was replaced by 4 and 6 wt% of ground granulated blast furnace slag to accelerate the reaction kinetics. Then, the influence of boric acid for controlling the setting and kinetics reactions was also evaluated. The results demonstrated that the competition between the dissolution of boric acid and volcanic ash-slag particles is the main process controlling the setting and kinetics reaction. The addition of slag has significantly accelerated the initial and final setting times, whereas the addition of boric acid was beneficial for delaying the setting times. Consequently, it also enhanced the flowability of the paste. The compressive strength increased significantly with the addition of slag, and the optimum replaced rate was 4 wt% which resulted in 28 d strength of 27 MPa. Beyond that percentage, the strength was reduced because of the flash setting of the binder which does not allow a subsequent dissolution of the particles and their precipitation. The binders formed with the addition of slag and/or boric acid are beneficial for the improvement of the water stability of the volcanic ash-based phosphate geopolymer.
