The ginger essential oil/β-cyclodextrin (GEO/β-CD) composite, ginger essential oil/β-cyclodextrin/chitosan (GEO/β-CD/CTS) particles and ginger essential oil/β-cyclodextrin/chitosan (GEO/β-CD/CTS) microsphere were prepared with the methods of inclusion, ionic gelation and spray drying. Their properties were studied by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermo-gravimetry analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that the particle size of GEO/β-CD composite was smaller than that of β-CD and GEO/β-CD/CTS particles were loose and porous, while the microsphere obtained by spray drying had certain cohesiveness and small particle size. Besides, results also indicated that β-CD/CTS could modify properties and improve the thermal stability of GEO, which would improve its application value in food and medical industries.

Highly crystallized and microsized particles of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 spinels with different morphologies have been successfully synthesized using polystyrene (PS) as the sacrificial template, and were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical measurement. The spinels obtained at 700°C possess abundant porosity with about 200 nm in diameter, while the spinels calcined at 900°C exhibit a well-defined polyhedral morphology with particle size ranged from 0.2 to 2 μm. The materials prepared at 900°C display an excellent cycling performance due probably to better crystallinity and small particle size.

Nanosized barium ferrite spinel particles were prepared with the aid of ultrasound radiation by a precursor approach. A precursor was got by sonicating an aqueous solution of BaCl2, Fe (NO3)3·9H2O and urea firstly. Nanosized BaFe2O4 particles with a size of ca.40nm were prepared after the precursor was heated at 950 °C for 15 h. The nanosized barium ferrite particles and the precursor were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, FT-IR and differential scanning calorimetry.

Pyrrole and m-toluidine copolymer (P(PY/MT)) / montmorillonite (MMT) Composites were prepared by in situ chemical polymerization of pyrrole with m-toluidine monomer in the presence of montmorillonite. The structural, morphological and thermal properties of these composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). X-ray diffraction result for P(PY/MT)-MMT illuminated the intercalation of P(PY/MT) copolymer between the clay layers. The FT-IR result showed the successful incorporation of montmorillonite clay in the prepared P(PY/MT)/MMT composite. The higher thermal stability of high MMT content rate might be attributed to its higher chain compactness due to the interfacial interaction between the P(PY/MT) and the clay.

Spray drying method was used to prepare cocrystals of hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20) and cyclotetramethylene tetranitramine (HMX). Raw materials and cocrystals were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, Raman spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Impact and friction sensitivity of cocrystals were tested and analyzed. Results show that, after preparation by spray drying method, microparticles were spherical in shape and 0.5–5 µm in size. Particles formed aggregates of numerous tiny plate-like cocrystals, whereas CL-20/HMX cocrystals had thicknesses of below 100 nm. Cocrystals were formed by C–H⋯O bonding between –NO2 (CL-20) and –CH2– (HMX). Nanococrystal explosives exhibited drop height of 47.3 cm, and friction demonstrated explosion probability of 64%. Compared with raw HMX, cocrystals displayed significantly reduced mechanical sensitivity.

Rutin is a flavonol glycoside, which has been reported to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory,  antithrombotic, antineoplastic, inhibit ultraviolet radiation-induced cutaneous oxidative stress  and inflammation. The oral bioavailability of Rutin is very low. Phyto-phospholipid complex (phytosomes) is helpful in enhancing oral bioavailability and transdermal permeation of Rutin. Rutin phytosomes were prepared by using phosphatidylcholine (PC) and cholesterol by solvent evaporation and spray drying method. The physicochemical properties of phytosomes were  evaluated using particle size analyses, polydispersity index, Zeta potential, encapsulation efficiency, furrier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Phytosomes with the rutin: PC: cholesterol molar ratios of 1:1:0.2 were prepared by spray drying showed the lowest particle size (266.4 nm), the highest encapsulation efficiency (95.61%). Results of the FT-IR, DSC and XRD studies confirmed the  phyto-phospholipid complex formation.

Nanoparticle-stacked 1,1-diamino-2,2-dinitroethylene (FOX-7) microspheres were successfully prepared by spray-drying, and rod-shaped FOX-7 was obtained by the solvent/nonsolvent method for comparison. The microstructure features of samples were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the thermal properties were also investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). From the SEM analysis, the particle size of the rod-shaped FOX-7 is about 10 μm, whereas FOX-7 microspheres having a particle size ranging from 1 to 5 μm are formed by stacking nanoparticles with size of 100-250 nm. The crystal form of the samples prepared by the two methods did not change. The thermal performance test results showed that the rd-shaped FOX-7 had no significant change compared with the raw FOX-7, while the nanoparticle-stacked FOX-7 microspheres had higher thermal stability.

Poly (m-toluidine)(PMT) / montmorillonite (MMT) Composites with thermal stability were synthesized by in situ chemical polymerization of m-toluidine monomer in the presence of montmorillonite. The PMT /MMT composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Ludwigite ore is a typical low-grade boron ore accounting for 58.5% boron resource of China, which is mainly composed of magnetite, lizardite and szaibelyite. During soda-ash roasting of ludwigite ore, the presence of lizardite hinders the selective activation of boron. In this work, lizardite and szaibelyite were prepared and their soda-ash roasting behaviors were investigated using thermogravimetric-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS) analyses, in order to shed light on the soda-ash activation of boron within ludwigite ore. Thermodynamics of Na2CO3-MgSiO3-Mg2SiO4-Mg2B2O5 via FactSage show that the formation of Na2MgSiO4 was preferential for the reaction between Na2CO3 and MgSiO3/Mg2SiO4. While, regarding the reaction between Na2CO3 and Mg2B2O5, the formation of NaBO2 was foremost. Raising temperature was beneficial for the soda-ash roasting of lizardite and szaibelyite. At a temperature lower than the melting of sodium carbonate (851 °C), the soda-ash roasting of szaibelyite was faster than that of lizardite. Moreover, the melting of sodium carbonate accelerated the reaction between lizardite with sodium carbonate.
