A cube is one of the most fundamental shapes we can draw and can observe from a drawing. The two visualization methods most commonly applied in mathematics textbooks and education are the axonometric and the perspective representations. However, what we see in the drawing is really a cube or only a general cuboid (i.e., a polyhedron with different edge lengths). In this experimental study, 153 first-year ( 19–20-year-old) students, two-thirds of them being female, were asked to interactively adjust a cuboid figure until they believe what they see is really a cube. We were interested in how coherently people, who are actually students of arts studies and engineering with advanced spatial perception skills in most cases, evaluate these drawings. What we have experienced is that for most people there is a common visual understanding of seeing a cube (and not a general cuboid). Moreover, this common sense is surprisingly close to the conventions applied in axonometric drawings, and to the theoretical, geometric solution in the case of three-point perspective drawings, which is the most realistic visualization method.

The aim of this article is to offer a new approach of perception regarding the position of a distant object. It is also a tribute to John Stewart who accompanied the first stages of this research. Having already examined the difficulties surrounding questions of the perception of exteriority within the framework of enactive approaches, we will proceed in two stages. The first stage will consist of an attempt to explain distal perception in terms of individual sensorimotor invariants. This poses the problem but fails to solve it. The second stage will propose a new pathway to account for spatial perception; a pathway that does not deny the initial intuitions of the autopoietic enactive approaches, but one which radically changes the conception of cognition by considering, from the perceptual stage, the need to take into account interindividual interactions. The protocol of an original experimental study will characterize this new approach considering the perceptual experience of objects at a distance, in exteriority, in a space of possibilities without parting from the domain of interaction. To do this, we have to work at the limits of the perceptual crossing, that is, at the moment when the perceptual reciprocity between different subjects begins to disappear.

The frequency of turbulent macroinstability occurrence was measured in liquids agitated in a cylindrical baffled vessel. As it has been proved by preceding experimental results of the authors, the stochastic quantity with frequency of occurrence of 10-1 to 100 s-1 is concerned. By suitable choosing the viscosity of liquids and frequency of impeller revolutins, the region of Reynolds mixing numbers was covered from the pure laminar up to fully developed turbulent regime. In addition to the equipment making it possible to record automatically the macroinstability occurrence, also the visualization method and videorecording were employed. It enabled us to describe in more detail the form of entire flow field in the agitated system and its behaviour in connection with the macroinstability occurrence. It follows from the experiments made that under turbulent regime of flow of agitated liquids the frequency of turbulent macroinstability occurrence is the same as the frequency of the primary circulation of agitated liquid.

Regularities of high-rise construction (implemented projects and developments) in Saint Petersburg and the Saint Petersburg agglomeration since the foundation of the city in 1703 till the 1950s are considered. Based on these regularities, a single spatially developed system of vertical dominants is formed. High-rise construction in the city and its suburbs started in the 1710s and continues up to the present time. In the considered decades (1703–1950s), high-rise construction mostly performed urban-planning functions (with vertical and symbolic dominants), relying on patterns of the visual perception of man-made landscapes under development. Since the 1710s, the construction of vertical dominants (mainly temples, spires of towers, lighthouses, etc.) of five ranks (depending on the altitude range and in relation to the background development) was conducted in territories of the entire agglomeration. These dominants were arranged in landscapes of the city and suburbs with almost mathematically precise accuracy and according to special regulations. Such dominants obtained particular descriptive and silhouette characteristics in accordance with the conditions of spatial perception. In some periods of city development, attempts were made to create monuments (symbolic dominants) of specific height and include those in the spatial system of high-rise dominants as significant elements of the city silhouette.

Design reviews are typically used for three types of design activities: (1) identifying errors, (2) assessing the impact of the errors, and (3) suggesting solutions for the errors. This experimental study focuses on understanding the second issue as it relates to the number of errors considered, the existence of controls, and the level of domain familiarity of the assessor. A set of design failures and associated controls developed for a completed industry sponsored project is used as the experimental design problem. Nondomain generalists (students from an undergraduate psychology class), domain generalists (first year engineering students), and domain specialists (graduate mechanical engineering students) are provided a set of failure modes and asked to provide their own opinion or confidence on whether the system would still successfully achieve the stated objectives. The confidence level for all domain populations decreased significantly as the number of design errors increased (largest p-value = 0.0793), and this decrease in confidence is more significant as the number of design errors increases. The impact on confidence is lower when solutions (controls) are provided to prevent the errors (largest p-value = 0.0334) as the confidence decreased faster for domain general engineers as compared to domain specialists (p = < 0.0001). The domain specialists showed higher confidence in making decisions than domain generalists and nondomain generalists as the design errors increase.

The experimental design was conducted to investigate the use of Microsoft Mathematics, free software made by Microsoft Corporation, in teaching and learning Calculus. This paper reports results from experimental study details on implementation of Microsoft Mathematics in Calculus, students’ achievement and the effects of the use of Microsoft Mathematics on students’ attitudes in relation to such experience. Two classes of the students from the first year student in Universitas Serang Raya were participated in the study. Recurrent loops in the visual cortex play a critical role in visual perception, which is likely not mediated by purely feed-forward pathways. However, the development of recurrent loops is poorly understood. The role of recurrent processing has been studied using visual backward masking, a perceptual phenomenon in which a visual stimulus is rendered invisible by a following mask, possibly because of the disruption of recurrent processing. Anatomical studies have reported that recurrent pathways are immature in early infancy. This raises the possibility that younger infants process visual information mainly in a feed-forward manner, and thus, they might be able to perceive visual stimuli that adults cannot see because of backward masking. Here, we show that infants under 7 mo of age are immune to visual backward masking and that masked stimuli remain visible to younger infants while older infants cannot perceive them. These results suggest that recurrent processing is immature in infants under 7 mo and that they are able to perceive objects even without recurrent processing. Our findings indicate that the algorithm for visual perception drastically changes in the second half of the first year of life.

AbstractDuring autoscopic phenomena, people perceive a double of themselves in extrapersonal space. Such clinical allocentric self-experiences often co-occur with auditory hallucinations, yet experimental setups to induce similar illusions in healthy participants have been limited to visual doubles. We investigated whether feeling the presence of an auditory double could be provoked in healthy participants and how it might affect spatial aspects of bodily self-consciousness. We recorded the own versus another person’s voice while walking around in the room using binaural headphones from an egocentric and an allocentric perspective. In comparison to listening to their own moving voice egocentrically, when listening to themselves allocentrically, participants reported a strong feeling of a presence with a similarly high degree of self-identification, suggesting a successful induction of the feeling of an acoustic doppelganger. When pointing to the source of the own voice participants localized it closer to themselves than when listening to another person’s voice, suggesting a change in spatial perception. Interestingly, the opposite pattern was found in participants that had previous hallucinatory experiences. These findings show that listening to one’s own voice allocentrically can manipulate bodily self-consciousness and self-related spatial perception. This paradigm enables the experimental study of the relationship between auditory vocal hallucinations and bodily self-consciousness, bridging important clinical phenomena and experimental knowledge.
