Electric Vehicles (EVs) play a significant role in the reduction of CO2 emissions and other health-threatening air pollutants Accordingly, several research studies are introduced owing to replacing conventional gasoline-powered vehicles with battery-powered EVs. However, the ultra-fast charging (UFC) of the battery pack or the rapid recharging of the battery requires specific demands, including both: the EV battery and the influence on the power grid. In this regard, advanced power electronics technologies are emerging significantly to replace the currently existing gas station infrastructures with the EV charging stations to move from conventional charging (range of hours) to UFC (range of minutes). Among these power electronics conversion systems, the DC-DC conversion stage plays an essential role in supplying energy to the EV via charging the EV’s battery. Accordingly, this paper aims to present possible architectures of connecting multiple Dual Active Bridge (DAB) units as the DC-DC stage of the EV fast charger and study their Small-Signal Modeling (SSM) and their control scheme. These are, namely, Input-Series Output-Series (ISOS), Input-Series Output-Parallel (ISOP), Input-Parallel Output-Parallel (IPOP), and Input-Parallel Output-Series (IPOS). The control scheme for each system is studied through controlling the output filter inductor current such that the current profile is based on Reflex Charging (RC). The main contribution of this paper can be highlighted in providing generalized SSM as well as providing a generalized control approach for the Input-Series Input-Parallel Output-Series Output-Parallel (ISIP-OSOP) connection. The generalized model is verified with three different architectures. The control strategy for each architecture is studied to ensure equal power sharing, where simulation results are provided to elucidate the presented concept considering a three-module ISOS, IPOP, ISOP, and IPOS DC-DC converters.

This paper presents an optimal control scheme for an islanded microgrid (MG), which performs reactive power-sharing and voltage regulation. Two-fold objectives are achieved, i.e., the load estimation strategy, firstly, approximates the MG’s impedance and transmits this information through a communication link. Based on approximated impedance information, an optimal regulator is then constructed to send optimal control commands to respective local power controllers of each distributed generation unit. An optimal regulator is a constraints optimized problem, mainly responsible to restore the buses’ voltage magnitudes and realize power-sharing proportionally. The important aspect of this control approach is that the voltage magnitude information is only required to be transferred to each inverter’s controller. In parallel, a secondary control layer for frequency restoration is implemented to minimize the system frequency deviations. The MATLAB/Simulink and experimental results obtained under load disturbances show the effectiveness for optimizing the voltage and power. Modeling and analysis are also verified through stability analysis using system-wide mathematical small-signal models.

There has been wide interest in the control scheme of the electromagnetic levitation system due to its disadvantages of nonlinearity and open-loop uncertainty. A typical coil-ball levitation system is used in research. The forces of the ball are analyzed and a dynamic model of the whole electromagnetic levitation system is established. Based on the nonlinear state-space model, the coil-ball system is linearized and then a LQR control approach is proposed. Simulation results show that, compared with conventional pole assignment scheme, the electromagnetic levitation system under the proposed control approach gets a better performance, including smaller overshot and faster response.

In this study, the problem of proportional power sharing consensus in a DC microgrid (MG) consisting of distributed generators (DGs) is discussed. Presently, MGs face challenges involving the intermittent nature of DGs and load power fluctuations. To address these challenges, three different control schemes are proposed. The first consensus-based control algorithm is introduced to address proportional power sharing in the presence of variations in the DGs rate, i.e., power capacity. Secondly, in regards to load power fluctuations, a control scheme is designed to enable the DGs to compute their individual proportional power share in a distributed manner. Eventually, a comprehensive real-time control approach is developed through which the DGs cooperatively maintain the required power load and achieve the updated proportional share simultaneously. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches simulations results for a simple network of DGs are presented.

Background: With the growing popularity of various group communication applications such as file transfer, multimedia events, distance learning, email distribution, multiparty video conferencing and teleconferencing, multicasting seems to be a useful tool for efficient multipoint data distribution. An efficient communication technique depends on the various parameters like processing speed, buffer storage, and amount of data flow between the nodes. If data exceeds beyond the capacity of a link or node, then it introduces congestion in the network. A series of multicast congestion control algorithms have been developed, but due to the heterogeneous network environment, these approaches do not respond nor reduce congestion quickly whenever network behavior changes. Objective: Multicasting is a robust and efficient one-to-many (1: M) group transmission (communication) technique to reduced communication cost, bandwidth consumption, processing time and delays with similar reliability (dependability) as of regular unicast. This patent presents a novel and comprehensive congestion control method known as integrated multicast congestion control approach (ICMA) to reduce packet loss. Methods: The proposed mechanism is based on leave-join and flow control mechanism along with proportional integrated and derivate (PID) controller to reduce packet loss, depending on the congestion status. In the proposed approach, Proportional integrated and derivate controller computes expected incoming rate at each router and feedback this rate to upstream routers of the multicast network to stabilize their local buffer occupancy. Results: Simulation results on NS-2 exhibit the immense performance of the proposed approach in terms of delay, throughput, bandwidth utilization, and packet loss than other existing methods. Conclusion: The proposed congestion control scheme provides better bandwidth utilization and throughput than other existing approaches. Moreover, we have discussed existing congestion control schemes with their research gaps. In the future, we are planning to explore the fairness and quality of service issue in multicast communication.

Currently, high-performance power conversion requirements are of increasing interest in microgrid applications. In fact, isolated bidirectional dc-dc converters are widely used in modern dc distribution systems. The dual active bridge (DAB) dc-dc converter is identified as one of the most promising converter topology for the mentioned applications, due to its benefits of high power density, electrical isolation, bidirectional power flow, zero-voltage switching, and symmetrical structure. This study presents a power management control scheme in order to ensure the power balance of a dc microgrid in stand-alone operation, where the renewable energy source (RES) and the battery energy storage (BES) unit are interfaced by DAB converters. The power management algorithm, as introduced in this work, selects the proper operation of the RES system and BES system, based on load/generation power and state-of-charge of the battery conditions. Moreover, a nonlinear robust control strategy is proposed when the DAB converters are in voltage-mode-control in order to enhance the dynamic performance and robustness of the common dc-bus voltage, in addition to overcoming the instability problems that are caused by constant power loads and the dynamic interactions of power electronic converters. The simulation platform is developed in MATLAB/Simulink, where a photovoltaic system and battery system are selected as the typical RES and BES, respectively. Assessments on the performance of the proposed control scheme are conducted. Comparisons with the other control method are also provided.

A hysteretic operator is proposed to set up an expanded input space so as to transform the multi-valued mapping of hysteresis to a one-to-one mapping so that the neural networks can be applied to model of the behavior of hysteresis. Based on the proposed neural modeling strategy for hysteresis, a pseudo control scheme is developed to handle the control of nonlinear dynamic systems with hysteresis. A neural estimator is constructed to predict the system residual so that it avoids constructing the inverse model of hysteresis. Thus, the control strategy can be used for the case where the output of hysteresis is unmeasurable directly. Then, the corresponding adaptive control strategy is presented. The application of the novel modeling approach to hysteresis in a piezoelectric actuator is illustrated. Then a numerical example of using the proposed control strategy for a nonlinear system with hysteresis is presented.

In this paper, an improved load sharing control scheme is presented, which is able to improve the transient response and power sharing accuracy of parallel-connected inverters used in microgrid. It also shows how the improved droop method can be easily adapted to account for the operation of parallel-connected inverters, providing good performance under the variation and disturbance of loads, as well as achieving good steady-state objectives and transient performance. Two DSP-based single-phase Microgrid inverters are designed and implemented. Simulation and experimental results are all reported, confirming the validity of the proposed control technique.
