Neglected and underutilized species (NUS) offer largely unexplored opportunities for providing nutritious plant food, while making agro-ecosystems more diverse and resilient to climate change. The aim of this work was to explore the potential of two typical Mediterranean underutilized species, purslane and borage, as novel vegetable product (microgreens). Micro-scale production of edible plants is spreading due to the simplicity of their management, rapid cycle, harvest index, and phytochemical value of the edible product. Microgreens, therefore, represent an opportunity to link NUS, nutrition, and agricultural and dietary diversification. By analyzing yield, antioxidants activities, mineral composition, and main phenolic acids and flavonoids, our work indicated that the two species provide interesting results when compared with those reported for crops and horticultural species. Specifically, purslane should be considered highly nutritional due to the amount of phenolic compounds and ascorbic acid, and to potential good β-carotene bioavailability. Borage microgreens have a very high fresh yield and a more composite and balanced phenolic profile. In conclusion, our work provided evidence for implementing new ways to expand the NUS market-chains and for developing added-value food products.

Camu-camu (Myrciaria dubia (Kunth) McVaugh) is a fruit economically relevant to the Amazon region, mostly consumed in the form of processed pulp. Our aim was to perform an unprecedented comparative study on the chemical composition and bioactivities of the camu-camu pulp and industrial bio-residues (peel and seed), and then the most promising fruit part was further explored as a functionalized ingredient in yogurt. A total of twenty-three phenolic compounds were identified, with myricetin-O-pentoside and cyanindin-3-O-glucoside being the main compounds in peels, followed by p-coumaroyl hexoside in the pulp, and ellagic acid in the seeds. The peel displayed the richest phenolic profile among samples, as well as the most significant antibacterial (MICs = 0.625–10 mg/mL) and anti-proliferative (GI50 = 180 µg/mL against HeLa cells) activities. For this reason, it was selected to be introduced in a food system (yogurt). Taken together, our results suggest the possibility of using the camu-camu peel as a source of food additives.

AbstractA Th-rich mineral of the crandallite group has been investigated from the weathering profile of the Schugorsk bauxite deposit, Timan, Russia. It occurs within thin (up to 0.5 mm) organic-rich veinlets together with ‘leucoxene’ in the form of small shapeless grains which vary in size from 1—2 mm to 60—70 mm. Rare grains disseminated among boehmite crystals were also found. Microprobe analyses determined that the ThO2 content can be as high as 18 wt.%. The mineral composition is intermediate between crandallite CaAl3H(PO4)2(OH)6, goyazite SrAl3H(PO4)2(OH)6, Th-crandallite and svanbergite SrAl3PO4SO4(OH)6 in the beudantite group.Comparatively high contents of Fe and Si and a very high positive Th and Fe content correlation (r = +0.98) suggest that the formula of the hypothetical Th-bearing end-member is ThFe3(PO4,SiO4)2(OH)6 with Th and Si substituting for REE and Prespectively (woodhouseite-type substitution). Another possible substitution is Th4+ + Ca2+ ⇋ 2REE3+ (florencite-type). A deficiency of cations in the X site can be explained by either the presence of carbon, undetectable by microprobe, in the crystal lattice or a lack of X-site cations due to radiation damage induced by Th. Some excess of cations in the B site (Al and Fe3+) can be explained by the presence of very small boehmite and hematite inclusions on the crandallite grain surfaces. Th-rich crandallite may be the result of alteration of an unidentified silicate mineral from the parent rock with a composition close to the simplified formula Fe2+ThSiO4(OH)2.

<p>Making the transition to ultra-long bridge design life requires a paradigm shift in the way bridge maintenance is considered. In order to achieve a very long service life, the maintenance program must be carefully planned and strictly executed throughout the structure’s life. A bridge’s bearings and expansion joints experience the full effects of traffic and the environment throughout that service life, and can act as ideal “smart” components</p><p>– incorporating integrated sensors in order to continuously monitor the components’ own performance, and the structure’s overall performance, over time. Installation and testing of such sensors in factory conditions allows very high quality control, which cannot easily be matched on site. So-called “wear elements”, such as the sliding surface materials in bearings and expansion joints, will need to be replaced a number of times during a long service life, even when using the highest-quality materials available. Recognizing this fact, and incorporating monitoring systems that can track the deterioration of such elements and provide advance warnings for the owner, can result in efficient life-cycle planning of bridge maintenance, vital for major transport infrastructure. Recent developments and added value of such “smart” technologies are discussed.</p>

Teluk Kenidai Village is located in Tambang District, Kampar Regency, Riau Province. Teluk Kenidai Village has the potential for natural tourism in the form of beaches, which are one of the alternative tourist destinations for the community. The activities carried out are playing various kinds of rides and swimming on the banks of the Kampar River. The visitors to the island of love in Kenidai Bay are the largest visitors of all tourist objects in Kampar Regency. The existence of the island of love tourism can develop the community's economy by providing special foods as souvenirs and drinks for tourist visitors. Alternative foods that can be done are processed crispy monitor fish and lime syrup drinks because these two things have very high potential in Kampar Regency, and can provide added value to people's lives. The purpose of the activity is to empower the people of Teluk Kenidai Village, to process various crispy monitoring fish and to increase the attractiveness of the island of love for visiting tourists. The benefits of the activity are opening up people's insights in increasing the potential of natural resources, gaining skills and abilities in making crispy monitor fish and lime syrup to improve the economy. The method is carried out by demonstration and hands-on practice in the manufacture of crispy monitoring fish and lime syrup. The target communities are the people living in Teluk Kenidai Village and village customary leaders and the Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) totaling 15 people. Evaluation is carried out by giving questionnaires to all participats before and after the delivery of counseling materials and practices. The results of the evaluation of the community service activities that have been carried out show that the increasing desire of the community in practicing extension activities to earn additional income by opening this bussines, especially in the tourist area of Pulau Cinta in Teluk Kenidai Village.

Many people around the world struggle with the problem of an insufficient supply of iodine (I) and selenium (SE) in their diet. Food enriched with these elements is a good source of iodine and selenium. Juices made from four carrot (CJ) cultivars and biofortified with iodine and selenium (BCJs) were investigated to determine their I and Se contents, their impact on the supply of these elements to the diet, and losses in the production process. Other juice parameters important for consumers health were also determined. A significant increase in I and Se content relative to CJ was observed for each BCJ. The losses of I and Se (relative to raw material) during juice preparation were depended based on variety and added elements. Carrot biofertilization with iodine and selenium contributed to decreased contents of dry matter, total soluble solids, protein, sugars, and β-carotene in the juices and lower antioxidative activity as compared with CJ. Biofortification had little effect on the color and pH of juices. Finally, six polyphenolic compounds were identified and determined. Despite the reduction in the content of some ingredients in BCJ, they still remain their valuable source. Their added value is the increased content of iodine and selenium, which largely cover the daily demand for these elementals.

Once a biorefinery is ready to operate, the main processed materials need to be completely evaluated in terms of many different factors, including disposal regulations, technological limitations of installation, the market, and other societal considerations. In biorefinery, glycerol is the main by-product, representing around 10% of biodiesel production. In the last few decades, the large-scale production of biodiesel and glycerol has promoted research on a wide range of strategies in an attempt to valorize this by-product, with its transformation into added value chemicals being the strategy that exhibits the most promising route. Among them, C3 compounds obtained from routes such as hydrogenation, oxidation, esterification, etc. represent an alternative to petroleum-based routes for chemicals such as acrolein, propanediols, or carboxylic acids of interest for the polymer industry. Another widely studied and developed strategy includes processes such as reforming or pyrolysis for energy, clean fuels, and materials such as activated carbon. This review covers recent advances in catalysts used in the most promising strategies considering both chemicals and energy or fuel obtention. Due to the large variety in biorefinery industries, several potential emergent valorization routes are briefly summarized.
