The health risks of exposure to loud noises are a well-established fact and are widely addressed in modern industries. Yet, in less developed countries, it is thought these hazards receive less attention, both in the workplace and in private life. (1) Background: The aim of this study is to assess the occupational noise exposure in a developing country and identify possible risk groups for whom intervention is needed. (2) Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed among brewery employees in Lagos, Nigeria. Pure-tone audiometry (PTA) was performed, paired with a self-report questionnaire. Personal noise dosimetry (PND) was also performed with an additional group of participants. (3) Results: A total of 458 employees were submitted to PTA. The Packaging and Utilities department reported the largest shifts in hearing thresholds (18 dB [sd = 15] and 16 dB [sd = 15] @4kHz, respectively). No significant effect of department type on auditory health could be found. PND results were obtained from 39 employees. Packaging and Sales were identified as the most exposed departments. (4) Conclusions: A healthy hearing profile was found for a large proportion of the brewery employees (91.7%). However, NIHL (noise-induced hearing loss) proportions specifically among Bottling and Sales employees were elevated.

Objective: To determine the frequency and risk factors of occupational noise induced hearing loss. Study Design: Cross sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Dispensary Unit of Jaith Bhuta Sugar Mill near Rahim Yar Khan, Southern Punjab.from Aug 2017 to Jan 2018. Methodology: This study was conducted using nonprobability consecutive sampling. n=300 workers of bothgenders aged 18-40 years were assessed. Basic demographic parameters, otoscopic examination and Pure Tone Audiometry were used for data collection. The Data was analyzed by using SPSS version 21. Results: Study included 215 (71.7%) males and 85 (28.3%) females with male to female ratio of 2.53: 1 and meanage of 28.34 ± 4.61 years. The frequency rate of hearing impairment (HI) was 90 (30%) out of 300 respondents inthis study. Out of 70 (100%) of respondents were affected with duration of job of 6-10 years. There was significant association between gender, age, education, duration of noise exposure with occupational noise induced hearing loss with p-value <0.001. Conclusion: There was high frequency of occupational noise induced hearing loss (ONIHL) with significantrisk factors being level and duration of exposure to noise (ETN), age, gender, education and hearing protectivedevices (HPD)’s.

Objectives To evaluate the quality of life of patients with ongoing tinnitus. Study Design This was a cross-sectional study of patients with ongoing tinnitus. Setting The study was carried out in a tertiary hospital in southeastern Nigeria. Subjects and Methods Subjects are adults who presented to the otorhinolaryngology clinic with tinnitus as their primary complaint. Pure-tone audiometry, tinnitus pitch, and loudness matching were done. The Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) questionnaire was used in assessing their quality of life. Results There were 63 participants within the age range of 16 to 74 years; 20 (31.7%) were male and 43 (68.3%) were female. The mean duration of tinnitus was 26.7 ± 38.1 months. Nineteen (30.2%) participants had bilateral tinnitus while 44 (69.8%) had unilateral tinnitus. The mean THI score was 36.6 ± 19.7. The most reported handicap was anxiety and difficulty with concentration followed by depression and irritability. There was no correlation between the disability shown by the THI score and the age, sex, duration of the tinnitus, the tinnitus pitch, tinnitus loudness, or the laterality of the tinnitus. There was a significant positive correlation between the grade of hearing loss and the level of disability reported in the THI ( P = .01). Conclusion Tinnitus sufferers appear to have poorer quality of life compared with nonsufferers. This quality-of-life affectation is likely to be worse in those with disabling hearing loss but does not appear to be related to their age, sex, symptom duration, or the loudness and pitch of their tinnitus.

Introduction: Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) is an occupational health hazard linked with noise exposure of more than 85 dB. Aircraft noise and other occupational noise exposure cause military aviators more susceptible to NIHL than commercial jet pilots. Aim: To find out the prevalence of noise induced hearing loss among different military aircrew population with special emphasis on identifying the associated risk factors. Materials and Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted on Kuwait Air force pilots those who came for annual medical checkup from July 2010 to July 2012. Audiometry of all subjects was done by ENT specialist and necessary data were collected by structured questionnaires. All data were analyzed by SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) version 17.0 Results: Out of 221 aircrew 32 (14.48%) developed NIHL. Hearing loss was mild to moderate and predominately at high frequencies. Most affected group was helicopter pilots. Pilots of more than 40 years of age and those who had more than 1000 flying hours had mean hearing threshold more than other groups. The right ear was affected in majority of cases than left ear. Conclusion: Noise exposure to aircrew is inevitable so hearing loss prevention strategies might play a pivotal role to save aircrew hearing. Active surveillance of hearing protection practices might have beneficiary effect. Steps can be taken for early detection of NIHL and hearing conservation program. AbstractHearing loss is often associated with the phantom sound of tinnitus. However, the degree of the association between severity of hearing loss and tinnitus loudness taking into account the impact of other variables (e.g., emotional disturbances) is not fully understood. This is an important question for audiologists who are specialized in tinnitus rehabilitation as patients often ask whether the loudness of their tinnitus will increase if their hearing gets worse.To explore the relationship between tinnitus loudness and pure tone hearing thresholds.This was a retrospective cross-sectional study.445 consecutive patients who attended a Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Therapy Specialist Clinic in UK were included.The results of audiological tests and self-report questionnaires were gathered retrospectively from the records of the patients. Multiple-regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between tinnitus loudness, hearing loss and other variables.The regression model showed a significant relationship between the pure tone average (PTA) at the frequencies 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz of the better ear and the tinnitus loudness as measured via visual analogue scale (VAS), r (regression coefficient) = 0.022 (p < 0.001). Other variables significantly associated with tinnitus loudness were tinnitus annoyance (r = 0.49, p < 0.001) and the effect of tinnitus on life (r = 0.09, p = 0.006). The regression model explained 52% of the variance of tinnitus loudness.Although increased tinnitus loudness was associated with worse PTA, the relationship was very weak. Tinnitus annoyance and impact of tinnitus on life were more strongly correlated with tinnitus loudness than PTA.

Background. Exposure to noise from mobile devices is suspected to affect hearing. Data are limited, particularly in less developed countries. We assessed noise levels from mobile phones and user audiometric status at University of Ibadan, Nigeria, in an initial cross-sectional study. Methods. Fifty-eight staff and 45 young adult students owning mobile phones were selected. A pretested questionnaire assessed demographics, phone attributes, and predominant ear used for making and receiving calls. Noise was measured in A-weighted decibels. Pure tone audiometry was conducted at varying frequencies. Statistics computed included Chi-square and t-tests. Results. Certain phone brands used by students were commonly reported. More utilized right ears to make or receive calls. Mean reported mobile phone use duration by students was 2.9±1.7 years, lower than among staff, 3.4±1.9 years (P<0.05). There were differences in use of head phones (22.2%, 12.1%) and speakers (51.1%, 15.5%) by students and staff, respectively (P<0.05). Mean measured noise levels of phones when ringing, per user settings, were high 91.9±16.1 dBA (students) and 93.3±10.9 dBA (staff). Audiometry suggested 22.2% students and 28.0% staff had some evidence of hearing impairment. Conclusions. Mobile phones noise levels were high, but exposures though frequent were of short duration. Larger, longitudinal studies are needed on phone use and hearing impairment.

A cross sectional study was done in the department of otolaryngology of Central Police Hospital. Rajarbagh, Dhaka., during the period of January 2005 to December 2007 to find out noise induced hearing loss of traffic polices and to raise awareness for early diagnosis and treatment and also preventive measures of noise induced hearing loss. 'Thirty patients who were diagnosed as a case of hearing impairment by detailed history, clinical examination and related investigations were included in the study who were exposed to noise 0-20 years. Common chief complaints of the patients were impairment of hearing (100%), Minims (50%), dizziness (20%), aural discharge (6.66)%. Medical history of 11w patients were diabetes (6.66%) and hypertension (26.66 %). 40 % patients were smoker and 60 % patients were non smoker. A ssoc jar ed other disease like chronic supporative otitis media (CSOM) t vas present in 13.33 %. Pure tone audiometry revealed normal hearing 3.3 %, conductive hearing loss 10 %, sensorineural hearing loss 73.33 %, mixed hearing loss 13.33 % and normal hearing 6.66 %, mild hearing loss 50 To, moderate type of hearing loss 36.66 % and moderately severe 3.33 %, severe hearing loss were 3.33 %. Treatment of the patients were given by vitamin 13,, Lli, B6, cochlear vasodilators such as vinpocetine and hearing aids. Patients were advised to Hume to other department of police service. those traffic police persons are vulnerable of noise induced hearing loss determined by patients complain, clinical examination and investigations like PTA, were advised to be changed to other department of police service.

Abstract: Hearing loss is the inability of a person’s sense of hearing in listening range of sound that can still be heard by people with normal hearing. With the growing popularity of entertainment venues (discos, karaoke, music concerts, internet cafes, etc.) as well as the use of portable music player, leisure noise have become the primary source that causing increased incidence of adolescent noise induced hearing loss (NIHL). Attitudes towards noise needs to be assessed at a young age, this is because the attittude is the basis of behavior, and behavior (towards leisure noise) can affect the amount of noise exposure of each person. Chronicity of NIHL symptoms often make adolescent tends to ignore the serious long-term problem that can arise and not take steps to resolve it. Objective: The purpose of this study is to obtain data from students of Manado 2nd Vocational Senior Secondary School concerning attitudes towards noise. Method: This research used descriptive observational with cross-sectional study. The subjects are students of Stone Concrete’s majors in Manado 2nd Vocational  Senior Secondary Schoolthat have passed initial hearing screening. Result: Of the 20 respondents who willingly take part in this research, obtained 5 respondents (25%) had negative attitude, 10 respondents (50%) had neutral attitude, and 5 respondents (25%) had positive attitude. From audiometric examination, obtained 4 respondents had a mild decreased in hearing threshold. Of the 4 respondents, 2 (50%) of them had a neutral attitude and 2 other respondents (50%) had positive attitude. Conclusion: Respondents with positive attitude towards noise are vulnurable to hearing threshold changes caused by daily noise exposure.Keywords: adolescent, hearing, noise, attitudes towards noise     Abstrak: Gangguan pendengaran merupakan ketidakmampuan indra pendengaran seseorang dalam mendengarkan rentang suara yang masih dapat didengar oleh orang dengan pendengaran normal. Semakin berkembangnya popularitas dari tempat-tempat hiburan (diskotik, karaoke, konser musik, warung internet, dan lain sebagainya) serta penggunaan pemutar musik portabel telah menjadi sumber peningkatan angka kejadian gangguan pendengaran akibat bising (GPAB) pada usia muda. Sikap terhadap kebisingan perlu dinilai pada usia muda, hal ini dikarenakan sikap merupakan dasar dalam berperilaku, dan perilaku (terhadap kebisingan sosial) dapat mempengaruhi derajat paparan bising masing-masing orang. Kronisitas dari gejala (GPAB) membuat kaum muda kurang menanggapi serius masalah-masalah jangka panjang yang dapat ditimbulkan, serta mengambil langkah untuk mengatasinya. Tujuan: Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk memperoleh data sikap terhadap kebisingan pada siswa sekolah menengah kejuruan (SMK) Negeri 2 Manado. Metode Penelitian:Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif observasional dengan menggunakan metode cross-sectional. Subjek penelitian adalah siswa jurusan Teknik Konstruksi Batu Beton (TKBB) SMK Negeri 2 Manado yang sudah melewati screening pendengaran awal. Hasil: Dari 20 responden yang bersedia menjadi responden penelitian, didapatkan 5 responden (25%) mempunyai sikap negatif, 10 responden (50%) mempunyai sikap netral, dan 5 responden (25%) mempunyai sikap positif. Dari pemeriksaan audiometrik, didapatkan 4 responden mengalami penurunan ambang dengar derajat ringan. Dari 4 responden tersebut, 2 (50%) diantaranya mempunyai sikap netral dan 2 responden (50%) mempunyai sikap positif. Simpulan: Responden yang bersikap positif terhadap bising (pro-bising) rentan terhadap terjadinya perubahan ambang dengar yang akibatkan oleh paparan kebisingan sehari-hari.Kata kunci: usia muda, pendengaran, bising, sikap terhadap kebisingan

Obesity is an increase in total body fat, that is if found to be overweight > 20% in men and 25% in women due to fat. Increased obesity cannot beseparated from lifestyle, such as decreased physical activity.    One complication   that   can   be   caused   by   obesity   is   hearing   loss, especiallysensorineural hearing loss caused by microangiopathic abnormalities, especially in the inner ear. But the relationship of events between obesity withhearing loss is still often a debate, because there is no definite consensus. The purpose of this research determine the relationship of obesity with sensorineural hearing loss. This research is an analytic study by obtaining cross-sectional study, with data obtained from the assessment of bodyweight and height to see the status of the mass index, physical examination of the ear, and audiometric examination. Data analysis techniques using the chi square test statistics. Research result obtained relationship between obesity with sensorineural hearing loss as much as 49.09% and the highest degree of hearing loss is mild degrees as much as 27.07%. Research conclusions there is a significant relationship between obesity with sensorineural hearing loss. Introduction.Although quarry operations have high economic significance, the effects they cause to the workers in terms of excessive noise production cannot be overlooked. This cross-sectional study assessed the extent of noise exposure and its influence on hearing capabilities among quarry workers in Ashanti region.Methods. The study involved 400 workers randomly selected from five quarries in Ashanti region from April to June 2012. Data was collected using structured questionnaires, physical examination, and audiological assessments. A logistic regression model was fitted to assess independent predictors of hearing loss.Results. All the machines used at the various quarries produced noise that exceeded the minimum threshold with levels ranging from 85.5 dBA to 102.7 dBA. 176 (44%) of study respondents had hearing threshold higher than 25 dBA. 18% and 2% of these were moderately (41–55 dBA) and severely (71–90 dBA) impaired, respectively. Age, duration of work, and use of earplugs independently predicted the development of hearing loss. Use of earplugs showed a protective effect on the development of hearing loss (OR = 0.45; 95% CI = 0.25, 0.84).Conclusion.This study provides empirical evidence on the extent of damage caused to quarry workers as a result of excessive noise exposure. This will support the institution of appropriate protective measures to minimize this threat.
