Anti-smoking advertisements are widely used to demonstrate to smokers the harm of smoking, and graphic health warnings (GHWs) are expected to have a positive effect on the intention to quit smoking. This study investigated which type of GHW (health-related threat (H-GHW) vs. social threat (S-GHW)) is more effective. Two types of GHWs for tobacco were shown to 28 daily smokers and 25 non-smokers while measuring their eye movements using an eye tracker. The time spent fixating on the GHWs was measured as an index of attentional bias. Participants were also asked to evaluate the unpleasantness of the images. They stated their intention to quit smoking in response to each image in a separate session. Multiple regression analysis was used to identify the effects of psychosocial factors on the intention to quit smoking in smokers and the intention to remain as non-smokers in the non-smokers. Both smokers and non-smokers reported greater unpleasantness and cessation intentions in response to H-GHWs than to S-GHWs. Non-smokers found both types of GHWs more unpleasant than smokers did. No differences were found in gaze fixation on GHWs between the two groups. When smokers viewed S-GHWs, the intention to quit smoking was greater as they felt more unpleasant. For non-smokers, the intention to remain non-smokers was greater when they felt more unpleasant and when the attention to H-GHWs was lower. Different psychological factors in anti-smoking advertisements are involved in the intention to quit smoking in smokers and to maintain a non-smoking status in non-smokers. Different approaches should be used according to the types of warning (e.g., warnings emphasizing a negative influence on others or on their own health) in anti-smoking campaigns.

Abstract Background We performed a follow up study about willingness and behaviors to quit smoking among smokers with schizophrenia in Japan. Methods Participants were outpatients with schizophrenia aged 20–69 years who had been visiting the hospital for ≥1 year as of April 1, 2016, and had visited the hospital more than once in the previous 6 months. A baseline survey on smoking behaviors including current smoking status and smoking cessation stage, was administered in 420 participants that were randomly extracted from a patient pool (n = 680) in 2016, and a follow-up survey was administered in 2017. We calculated the distribution and change in smoking cessation stage, number of smokers and nonsmokers after 1 year, and quitting rate from a naturalistic 1-year smoking-cessation follow up. Results The number of baseline respondents was 350; 113 current smokers and 68 former smokers. Among the 113 current smokers, 104 (92.0%) were followed for 1 year, 79 (70.0%) were interested in smoking cessation, and only 7 had received smoking cessation treatments at baseline. Among the tracked 104 participants, only 6 (5.8%) stopped smoking after 1 year. Among the 25 participants who had intentions to quit smoking within 6 months at baseline, 6 (24.0%) maintained their intention to quit smoking for 1 year, and 16 (64.0%) did not maintain their intention to quit smoking. Conclusions Our findings showed that many smokers with schizophrenia were interested in quitting smoking, but few patients received treatment and actually quit smoking. Timely intervention, including the option to receive smoking cessation treatment, is necessary for those patients with schizophrenia who smoke. Abstract Objectives Nonsmoking status and physical activity have, individually, been shown to be associated with health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The objective of this study was to assess whether the relationship between smoking status and HRQoL is modified or influenced by physical activity. Methods Data were extracted from the 2014 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey dataset (N = 332680) in 2015. Logistic regression models were used to address study objectives. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL), measured using eight domains (general health, physical health, mental health, activity limitations, pain, depressive symptoms, anxiety, and vitality), was regressed on smoking status without and with adjustment for age, race, gender, education, marital status, income, employment, healthcare coverage, comorbidity, body mass index, flu vaccination, alcohol use, and physical activity. Smoking status by physical activity interaction term was added to the adjusted model and evaluated for significance. Results There were significant smoking status by physical activity interaction effects on general health, physical health, activity limitations, and depressive symptoms domains. Among those who exercised, relative differences in the odds of a high HRQoL was smaller between former smokers and nonsmokers and larger between current smokers and nonsmokers when compared to those who did not exercise. Similarly, there were sharper relative differences between those who exercised and those who did not exercise among former smokers than among current smokers. Conclusions Smokers who successfully quit smoking (former smokers) may benefit from enhanced HRQoL that tends towards that of nonsmokers if they adopt physical activity in their daily routine. Implications Behavioral interventions that combine smoking cessation and physical activity may be more effective than either smoking cessation or physical activity alone in improving the quality of life measures such as overall, physical and mental health, and degree of limitation to activities due to poor health. Health care providers can support patients who successfully quit smoking to add exercise to their daily routine with the expectation of enhanced HRQoL.

Abstract: Learning the problems faced by women in the concept of women empowerment makes it important to always get a solution. Women's arisan groups become one of the place of empowerment for women to grow and develop in order to increase prosperity and equality. The issue of women's activeness in arisan groups is one of the problems that causes less successful empowerment to be implemented. Through survey methods conducted on housewives and professional groups who joined as members in arisan groups in Pekanbaru City by using questionnaires distributed to 31 members of the arisan group taken proportionally and analyzed by using multiple regression analysis and assisted with the program WarpPLS. The result of the research shows that education factor, status and amenability factor give significant influence to women activity in arisan group (P-value: 0,02, 0,03 and 0,01). Educational and status factors have a negative influence on liveliness and amenability factors have a positive effect. 26% of women's activeness in the arisan group can be explained through education factor, status and amenability. This longitudinal study investigated the factors that determine the effectiveness of graphic health warnings (GHWs) by comparing 246 South Korean smoker’s responses before and after the introduction of the country’s new tobacco control policy wherein GHWs were placed on all cigarette packaging. Even though introducing GHWs did not cause immediate changes in smokers’ intention to quit smoking or perception of smoking’s health risk, GHWs eventually motivated smokers to quit smoking when they experienced negative emotional responses to the newly introduced graphic warnings on cigarette packaging. More importantly, this study found that positive changes in smokers’ perceived risk associated with smoking due to the introduction of GHWs mediated a positive relationship between changes in smokers’ negative emotions (NE) from text-only warnings to graphic warnings and changes in their intention to quit smoking during the same period. Based on these results, the authors suggest that, for GHW policy to be more effective in motivating smoking cessation, the warnings need to convey images sufficiently unpleasant to induce negative emotional responses among smokers.

ABSTRACTIntroductionGiven the popularity of e-cigarettes, it is important to know who vapes, why, and whether different reasons for vaping are associated with vaping and smoking status.MethodsIn a UK cohort of young adults (23-26 years), we explored the characteristics of vapers and whether different reasons for vaping were associated with later vaping and smoking status. We used multinomial logistic regression to assess the association among ever smokers and vapers.ResultsEver and never vapers differed in numerous demographic and behavioural characteristics. Vaping out of curiosity was associated with lower likelihood of being a current vaper (adjusted relative risk ratio [aRRR] = 0.26, 95% confidence interval [95%CI] = 0.12 to 0.57, p < 0.001) but a higher likelihood of being a neither user compared to a current smoker at 24 years (aRRR = 2.13, 95%CI = 1.44 to 3.17, p < 0.001). Vaping to quit smoking was associated with higher likelihood of being a dual user (aRRR = 3.21, 95%CI = 1.74 to 5.90, p < 0.001) or a current vaper (aRRR = 3.26, 95%CI = 1.62 to 6.54, p < 0.001) but a lower likelihood of being a neither user (aRRR = 0.53, 95%CI = 0.34 to 0.82, p = 0.004) compared to being a current smoker at 24.ConclusionsIntention to quit smoking may be necessary for young people to effectively stop smoking using e-cigarettes.ImplicationsAlthough various studies have explored associations between reasons for vaping and both vaping and smoking, there is limited evidence from the UK. Particularly, evidence is limited among young adults as most research either focusses on adolescents or older adults. Among young adults in the UK, curiosity is a common reason for vaping but intention to quit smoking may be necessary for young people to effectively stop smoking by vaping.

Few studies have simultaneously considered the effects of significant others and medical professionals’ advice to quit smoking on smoking cessation intention. The present study involved 3841 current adult Korean smokers, divided into four groups with an intention to quit within 1 month, within 6 months, someday, and without intention to quit. Multinomial multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted according to smoking cessation intention level, adjusted for potential confounders, including past smoking cessation attempts. Smokers who had been advised to quit smoking by both significant others and medical professionals, significant others only, and medical professionals only were 2.63 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.62–4.29), 1.84 (95% CI: 1.17–2.89), and 1.44 (95% CI: 0.70–2.94) times more likely to intend to quit within 1 month, respectively, than those who were not advised to quit. The odds ratios of an intention to quit within 6 months were 2.91 (95% CI: 1.87–4.54), 2.49 (95% CI: 1.69–3.68), and 0.94 (95% CI: 0.44–2.05), respectively. To promote smokers’ intention to quit, the role of significant others should be considered. Medical professionals’ advice to quit smoking remains important, increasing the effects of significant others’ advice.
