It is a key issue for the Chinese government to improve eco-efficiency and realize green development. As a spatial organization mode of industrial labor division, industrial agglomeration has a complex impact on eco-efficiency. However, it is still debatable which industrial agglomeration modes have a positive impact on eco-efficiency. This paper employs a panel threshold model, enterprise micro-level data, and relevant economic environment data from 283 cities in China from 2004 to 2012. It tests the nonlinear effects of specialized, related diversified, and unrelated diversified agglomeration on industrial eco-efficiency. The results show that the impact of specialized and related diversified agglomeration on industrial eco-efficiency is first inhibited and then promoted. The unrelated diversified agglomeration has a significantly negative impact on industrial eco-efficiency, but the negative impact weakens when agglomeration reaches a certain level. Furthermore, the impact of the three agglomeration modes on industrial eco-efficiency depends on city size. The impact of specialized agglomeration on industrial eco-efficiency is insignificant in small- and some medium-sized cities, but it has a significant inhibitory effect on industrial eco-efficiency when the city surpasses medium size. The role of related diversified agglomeration in promoting industrial eco-efficiency is further enhanced with the growth of city size. The impact of unrelated diversified agglomeration on industrial eco-efficiency gradually changes from negative to positive, but it plays a promoting role only when the city reaches the scale of super-large and mega-cities. Finally, this paper suggests that policymakers should formulate differentiated agglomeration policies according to changes in industrial agglomeration level or city size to improve industrial eco-efficiency.

Abstract The new energy vehicle enterprises is a strategic emerging industry in China, so more and more government subsidies to promote innovative development are being accepted by new energy vehicle enterprises. What is the innovation efficiency of new energy vehicle enterprises receiving government subsidies? With the acceleration of the process of global economic financialization, whether financial support can promote the innovation efficiency of government subsidies and how enterprises should allocate financial assets have become issues that need to be deeply considered. Based on the annual report data of China's domestic listed new energy vehicle enterprises from 2015 to 2020, the relationship between government subsidies and enterprise innovation efficiency is empirically tested, and the impact of financial support on enterprise R&D innovation efficiency is investigated. The empirical results show that government subsidies are wasteful and fail to effectively promote R&D innovation, and the innovation efficiency of government subsidies is positively influenced by firm nature and firm age, while the total asset turnover ratio, operating cycle and firm size have a negative impact on innovation efficiency. Further research found that there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between financial support and the innovation efficiency of government subsidies. A certain degree of financial support has a positive impact on the innovation efficiency of government subsidies, but excessive financial support has a negative impact on the innovation efficiency of government subsidies. The conclusion provides empirical evidence for the Chinese government to improve the subsidy policy and standardize the development of new energy vehicle enterprises, and has a certain reference value for guiding new energy vehicle enterprises to reasonably allocate financial support.

Focusing on the 311 Chinese firms listed in the global markets from 2008 to 2019, based on the trade-off theory and the resource slack theory, using panel vector autoregressive model and panel threshold model, this paper explores the impact of fulfilling ESG responsibility on firm performance. The study reveals that in the short run, fulfilling ESG responsibility presents a “Substitution Effect,” whereas, in the long run, it presents a “Promotional Effect.” On the other hand, the improvement of firm performance has a significantly positive impact on ESG fulfillment investment, even though there is a strong hysteresis effect. Significant heterogeneity exists regarding the relationship between ESG fulfillment and firm performance. ESG fulfillment has a negative impact on firm performance in the short run, with the most affected firms being those small and mid-sized firms listed in the Mainland China markets. In the near term, the impact of firm performance on ESG fulfillment is positive, with those listed in the overseas markets and large firms being affected the most. The study reveals that firm size and the factors affiliated with ESG fulfillment tend to cause the differentiation effect in the inhibitory influence of ESG fulfillment on firm performance in the short run. This study could be used as a guideline for the social responsibilities of nonprofit organizations.

PurposeThe purpose of the study is to explore how financial leverage influences profitability of 1,503 listed manufacturing firms in China.Design/methodology/approachThe sample of the study is composed of the listed manufacturing firms in China. For the manufacturing firms, the annual financial information from 2008 to 2016 is obtained from the ORBIS database. In this study, initially a simultaneous equation approach is used to control for potential endogeneity. Then, additional regression analyses are conducted with panel data over the period of 2008-2016 using OLS, Fixed-effects, First-difference, Random-effects and Arellano and Bond’s (1991) two-step Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) methods.FindingsThe results reveal that the impact of leverage on profitability is inverted U-shaped. In this inverted U-shaped relationship, the positive impact of financial leverage on profitability could be attributed to tax shield, whereas the negative impact might be because of bankruptcy cost, financial distress, severe agency problems and information asymmetry that the listed Chinese firms suffer from because of some institutional characteristics of China.Research limitations/implicationsFirst, this study focuses on only listed manufacturing firms in China. Second, ownership types are not taken into account in this study.Practical implicationsFirst, the Chinese government should direct its efforts toward developing the bond markets and promoting alternative privately owned loan creditors to state-owned banks. Parallel to this, the transformation process toward market economy should be accelerated to facilitate the privatization of state-owned enterprises (SOEs). In addition to this, development of the bond market and privatization of SOEs will also mitigate the agency conflict between creditors and managers and between shareholders and managers.Originality/valueTo the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first study which investigates the impact of capital structure on profitability of the listed firms in China.

Kebjakan penghentian perizinan sementara (moratorium) kapal kapal yang pembuatannya di luar negeri (kapal eks asing) berdampak langsung pada nelayan yang bekerja pada kapal-kapal eks asing berupa penurunan pendapatan hingga hilangnya mata pencaharian. Di sisi lain, kebijakan moratorium tersebut dirasakan memberikan dampak positif bagi usaha perikanan tangkap skala kecil khususnya di Kota Bitung. Tulisan ini bertujuan menggambarkan dampak kebijakan moratorium pada pelaku usaha perikanan tangkap skala kecil di Kota Bitung Provinsi Sulawesi Utara. Tulisan ini merupakan bagian dari Kegiatan Kajian Khusus yang dilakukan secara cepat pada bulan Maret 2015. Penelitian tentang hal ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif, dengan teknik pengumpulan data yaitu wawancara mendalam dan observasi terhadap para pelaku usaha perikanan, baik perikanan tangkap, pengolahan dan pemasaran ikan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kebijakan moratorium telah memberikan dampak negatif terhadap usaha perikanan tangkap berupa penurunan pendapatan sampai hilangnya mata pencaharian, dalam usaha pengolahan berdampak pada berkurangnya bahan baku sampai berhentinya produksi ikan olahan, dalam usaha pemasaran berdampak pada berkurangnya ikan untuk dipasarkan. Meskipun demikian, kebijakan ini berdampak positif pada usaha perikanan tangkap skala kecil yaitu peningkatan produksi, makin seringnya melaut, makin dekatnya fishing ground, peningkatan harga ikan, mudahnya akses memperoleh BBM dan peningkatan pendapatan.Title: Policy Impact moratorium on Business fisheries sector in BitungTermination of the licensing policy (moratorium) ships whose creation abroad (foreign ex ship) have a direct impact on the fishermen who work on the ships of foreign ex a decrease in revenue to the loss of livelihood. On the other hand, policy moratorium perceived a positive impact on small scale fishery business, especially in the city of Bitung. This paper aims to describe the impact of the moratorium on the perpetrators of small-scale fishery business in the city of Bitung in North Sulawesi province. This paper is part of a Special Assessment activities undertaken quickly on 18-20 March 2015. Findings of study used a qualitative approach, with data collection techniques are in-depth interviews and observations of the perpetrators of fisheries, both capture fisheries, processing and marketing fish. The results showed that the moratorium had a negative impact on fishery business as a decrease in revenue to loss of livelihood, the business processing time reduces the raw materials to the cessation of production of processed fish, the marketing efforts led to a reduction of fish to be marketed. However, these policies have a positive impact on the fishery business, the small scale of production increases, more and more often at sea, the nearby fishing ground, the increase in the price of fish, easy access to obtain fuel and increased revenue.

A large number of countries have enacted laws aimed at making it easier for firms to invest in their country, while many countries offer various monetary incentives and tax incentives to encourage inward Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). The desire to attract FDI is due not only to the fact that FDI brings in new investment boosting national income and employment, but also due to the expectation that inward FDI would also provide additional spillover benefits to the local economy that can result in higher productivity growth and increased export growth. This study aims to examine the impact of foreign direct investment on innovation in developing countries. The estimation of a panel threshold model on a sample of 54 developing countries for the 1980-2009 period shows the presence of non linear effects in the relationship between FDI and innovation. We find a threshold value of technological development below which FDI has a negative impact on innovation and above which FDI has a significant positive impact on innovation. We conclude that it is not enough for economic policy to attract foreign investments, it is still necessary to support domestic firms to build an absorptive capacity allowing them to enjoy the benefits of multinational firms.

Recently, the number of published works devoted to the processes of synanthropization of fauna, is growing like an avalanche, which indicates the extreme urgency of this theme. In our view, the process of forming devices to coexist with human and the results of his life reflects the general tandency of the modern nature evolution. Urbanization is characteristic for such a specific group of animals like amphibians, the evidence of which are numerous literature data. Many researchers use this group to assess the bioindicative quality of the environment. For this aim a variety of indicators are used: from the cellular level of life of organization up to the species composition of the group in different territories. At the same time, the interpretation of the results is not always comparable for different areas and often have significantly different interpretations by experts. Urban environment, primarily due to the contamination is extremely aggressive to amphibians. As a consequence, the urban populations of amphibians may be a change in the demographic structure, affecting the reproductive ability of the population, the disappearance of the most sensitive species or individuals, resizing animals, the appearance of abnormalities in the development, etc. At the same time play an important amphibians in the ecosystems of cities, and some species in these conditions even feel relatively comfortable. Therefore, it is interesting to understand the mechanisms of self-sustaining populations of amphibians in urban environments. To assess the impact of natural and anthropogenic factors on the development of amphibian populations were used cognitive modeling using the program Vensim PLE. Cognitive map of the model for urban and suburban habitat conditions were the same. The differences concerned the strength of connections between individual factors (migration, fertility, pollution) and their orientation. In general, factors like pollution, parasites, predators had negative impact on the population, reducing its number. The birth rate, food and migration contributed to raising number of individuals. Some of the factors affected on the strength to of each other as well: the majority of the factors affected the structure of the population, had an influence on the fertility. Thanks to it the model reflects the additive effect of complex of factors on the subsequent status of the population. Proposed and analyzed four scenarios differing strength and duration of exposure. In the first scenario, a one-time contamination occurs and not subsequently repeated. The second and third scenario assumes half board contamination, 1 year (2 scenario) and two years (scenario 3). In the fourth scenario, the pollution affected the population of amphibians constantly. In accordance with the results of simulation, much weaker than the natural populations respond to pollution - have them as an intensive population growth and its disappearance at constant pollution is slow. Changes to other parameters of the model showed that this pollution is the decisive factor -only the constant action leads to a lethal outcome for the populations. All other components of the model have a corrective effect on the population dynamics, without changing its underlying trand. In urban areas due to the heavy impact of pollution maintaining the population is only possible thanks to the migration process – the constant replenishment of diminishing micropopulations of natural reserves. This confirms the assumption that the form of existence metapopulations lake frog in the city. In order to maintain the number of amphibians in urban areas at a high level it is necessary to maintain existing migration routes and the creation of new ones. Insular nature of the placement of suitable habitats in urban areas causes the metapopulation structure of the types of urbanists. Therefore, the process of urbanization is much easier for those species whicht are capable of migration in conditions of city. In the initial stages of settling the city micropopulationis formed by selective mortality of the most susceptible individuals to adverse effects. In future, maintaining the categories of individuals is provided mainly due to migration processes metapopulisation form of the species of existence is supported). It should be noted that the changes in the previous levels are always saved in future. In the case of reorganizations of individuals we of morphology can assume the existence of extremely adverse environmental conditions that threaten the extinction of the micropopulations.

Gelendzhik is the resort town, there aren't a lot of industrial enterprises here. The main pollutant is transport. The work purpose is the assessment of a condition of the artificial landings of a pine located along the Federal highway "Don" and landings, which is nearly the sea coast. Researches were conducted to a standard technique of the General vital state (A. S. Bogolyubov). The assessment of a condition of pines was carried out during 6 years: from 2010 to 2015. For carrying out research we used 6 experimental grounds on the Markotkhsky spine and 2 control grounds within the town. We investigated 24 trees on each platform, middle age of the trees were 30 - 40 years. Results. 1. The condition of trees in the pine forests located in immediate proximity with the Federal highway "Don" (No. 1, 2, 3) is unsatisfactory. As even weak influences of the majority of atmospheric gaseous pollutants (sulphurous gas, nitrogen oxides, etc.) give effect of a necrosis and hloroz of pine needles, the condition of pines is connected with technogenic pollution. So near the Federal highway "Don" the air environment is strongly polluted by exhaust gases. Information of 2012 confirm that negative influence of the route on Markotkh's vegetation decreases at reduction of load of the route. 2. On the sites located above on a slope (No. 4,5,6) thanks to remoteness and the wind mode intensity of influence of pollutants is lower and a condition of pines the quite satisfactory. 3. Trees on the sites located near the sea (No. 7,8) are in a good shape. Small deterioration of a state is noted in very droughty years. Conclusion. Results of six years' research show that the condition of the plantings which are in close proximity with the road worsens. It is explained by increase in intensity of the movement on the road, especially during a resort season. Gelendzhik is the city with a good ecological shape, but the damage to environment is already caused. If not to take measures, we can lose a unique part of the nature in the future, recreate it will be impossible. Measures of reduction of negative impact of exhaust gases were offered. Results of researches are transferred to ecological department of the City administration of Gelendzhik.

Abstract Introduction Sleep loss has a range of detrimental effects on cognitive ability. However, few studies have examined the impact of sleep restriction on neuropsychological function using an experimental design. The goal of this study was to examine the extent to which maintained insufficient sleep affects cognition in healthy adults compared to habitual adequate sleep. Methods This study used a randomized, crossover, outpatient sleep restriction design. Adults who regularly slept at least 7 h/night, verified by 2 weeks of screening with actigraphy, completed 2 phases of 6 weeks each: habitual sleep (>7 h of sleep/night) or sleep restriction (habitual sleep minus 1.5 h) separated by a 6-week washout period. During the sleep restriction phase, participants were asked to delay their bedtime by 1.5 hours/night while maintaining their habitual wake time. Neuropsychological function was evaluated with the NIH Toolbox Cognition Battery at baseline (week 0) and endpoint (week 6) of each intervention phase. The NIH Toolbox evaluates a range of cognitive abilities, including attention, executive functioning, and working memory. General linear models with post hoc paired t-tests were used to assess demographically-adjusted test scores prior to and following each sleep condition. Results At the time of analyses, 16 participants were enrolled (age 34.5□14.5 years, 9 women), 10 of whom had completed study procedures. An interaction between sleep condition and testing session revealed that individuals performed worse on List Sorting, a working memory test, after sleep restriction but improved slightly after habitual sleep (p<0.001). While not statistically reliable, the pattern of test results was similar on the other tests of processing speed, executive function, and attention. Conclusion In these preliminary results from this randomized experimental study, we demonstrated that sleep restriction has a negative impact while stable habitual adequate sleep has a positive impact on working memory, or the ability to temporarily hold information in mind while executing task demands. This finding contributes to our understanding of the complex interplay between different aspects of sleep quality (i.e., both sleep restriction as well as the maintenance of stable sleep patterns) on cognition and underscores the importance of routine sleep screening as part of medical evaluations.
