This paper investigates the relationship between the bitcoin price and the hashrate by disentangling the effects of the energy efficiency of the bitcoin mining equipment, bitcoin halving, and of structural breaks on the price dynamics. For this purpose, we propose a methodology based on exponential smoothing to model the dynamics of the Bitcoin network energy efficiency. We consider either directly the hashrate or the bitcoin cost-of-production model (CPM) as a proxy for the hashrate, to take any nonlinearity into account. In the first examined subsample (01/08/2016–04/12/2017), the hashrate and the CPMs were never significant, while a significant cointegration relationship was found in the second subsample (11/12/2017–24/02/2020). The empirical evidence shows that it is better to consider the hashrate directly rather than its proxy represented by the CPM when modeling its relationship with the bitcoin price. Moreover, the causality is always unidirectional going from the bitcoin price to the hashrate (or its proxies), with lags ranging from one week up to six weeks later. These findings are consistent with a large literature in energy economics, which showed that oil and gas returns affect the purchase of the drilling rigs with a delay of up to three months, whereas the impact of changes in the rig count on oil and gas returns is limited or not significant.

The paper aimed to formalise the relationship between the level of Ukrainian energy efficiency from 30 indicators of social, ecological and economic development of the country. The main purpose of the study is to identify the impact and dependence of socio-ecological and economic indicators on the level of energy efficiency using multiple correlation-regression analysis. The systematisation of the analysed results allowed identifying the core directions to overcome the issues of the slow pace of energy efficiency improvement and the development of carbon neutrality of the country. The relevance of this scientific solution to the problem is that the level of energy efficiency is influenced by a large number of socio-ecological and economic factors sometimes independent of each other. The authors analysed the relationship between the level of energy efficiency and socio-ecological and economic indicators of country development. The investigation consisted from the following stages: conducting polynomial-regression analysis of energy efficiency development in Ukraine; development of correlation-regression multiple models of relationships between energy efficiency indicator and socio-ecological-economic indicators; explaining the conclusions and providing recommendations considering the findings. The object of the study was the processes of energy efficiency relationships with 30 indicators of socio-ecological and economic development, namely how much they affect the energy development of the country. The conclusions were theoretical and practical in terms of the impact on the level of energy efficiency of interdisciplinary indicators. The conclusions which proved by the empirical findings allowed identifying weaknesses in the development of the national economy, as well as to improve and increase the energy potential of the country through energy efficiency development strategies due to the studied determinants that have a strong impact on the level of energy efficiency. The article is devoted to the quality of well casing at the Pyakyakhinskoye oil and gas condensate field. The issue of improving the quality of well casing is associated with many problems, for example, a large amount of work on finding the relationship between laboratory studies and actual data from the field; the difficulty of finding logically determined relationships between the parameters and the final quality of well casing. The text gives valuable information on a new approach to assessing the impact of various parameters, based on a mathematical apparatus that excludes subjective expert assessments, which in the future will allow applying this method to deposits with different rock and geological conditions. We propose using the principles of mathematical processing of large data sets applying neural networks trained to predict the characteristics of the quality of well casing (continuity of contact of cement with the rock and with the casing). Taking into account the previously identified factors, we developed solutions to improve the tightness of the well casing and the adhesion of cement to the limiting surfaces.

We investigate the relation between financial development, energy consumption, and economic growth in the economy of Lebanon over the period 2000M2–2010M12. Our findings confirm the existence of cointegration among the variables. The results indicate that financial development and energy consumption contribute to economic growth in Lebanon. The impact of energy consumption on economic growth is positive showing the significance of energy as a main stimulant of economic growth. Financial development is also found to play a vital role in enhancing economic growth. Financial development and economic growth also result in further increase in energy consumption. We offer some policy implications specific to Lebanon considering the recent discovery of large oil and gas reserves in the country and the historical importance of its banking sector which remains a center of Lebanon’s service-oriented economy.

The present work deals with the impact crusher energy efficiency at San Andres Zeolitic Plant. Varying the operational parameters levels (rotor velocity, hammer row number and crusher capacity) were carried up two experimental series: First series was aimed to obtain the influence of the operational parameters on the power consumed by the crusher motor; the second series evaluated the crusher specific energy consumption behavior. First series empirical model obtained describes the influence of operational parameters on power consumption. Also the relationship among specific energy consumption and crusher speed and capacity were obtained. The most efficient operational regimen corresponded to 1100 rpm of the rotor velocity, 2 hammer row numbers and 15 t/h of crusher capacity.

With the discovery of the Pre-Salt reserves, exploration of oil and gas is being strongly extended in Brazil, contributing to the recent increase of the demand for drilling capabilities. This paper discusses the impact of this oil discovery by assessing the relationship among the growth of proven reserves, the financial position of firms, and patent applications in the Brazilian upstream oil and gas industry. We provide empirical evidence indicating that firms with a lower financial performance prior to the pre-salt discovery were more aggressive in increasing the number of patent filings addressing technologies of the upstream oil and gas domain.

The main objective of this paper is to estimate the tourism demand for Mexico and Uruguay, two very different countries, but for both of which tourism is an important activity, and mainly originating from a large neighbor. We try to analyze whether the determinants of tourism demand differ depending on the size of the country, or if being a neighboring country is the main determinant. So, we analyze the relationship between the number of American tourists visiting Mexico and Argentinian tourists visiting Uruguay, and the inbound tourists’ income and the bilateral real exchange rate (RER) between the visiting country and the hosting country, following the Johansen’s methodology. We found one cointegration relationship for each country, where the income-elasticity was greater than 2 for American tourists visiting Mexico, and nearly 3 for Argentinian tourists visiting Uruguay. Bilateral RERs were also significant in both models. Moreover, forecasts show the impacts of institutional changes on the tourism sector. The impact of arrival of President Macri to power was positive for Argentinian tourists visiting Uruguay, but President Trump's arrival in the US was negative for American tourists visiting Mexico.

Abstract One of the five far-reaching goals of the European Union is climate change and sustainable energy use. The first step in the implementation of this task is to reduce energy demand in buildings to a minimum by 2021, and in the case of public buildings by 2019. This article analyses the possibility of improving energy efficiency in public buildings, the relationship between particular indicators of the demand for usable energy (UE), final energy (FE) and primary energy (PE) in buildings and the impact of these indicators on the assessment of energy efficiency in public buildings, based on 5 variants of extensive thermal renovation of a school building. The analysis of the abovementioned variants confirms that the thermal renovation of merely the outer envelope of the building is insufficient and requires the use of additional energy sources, for example RES. Moreover, each indicator of energy demand in the building plays a key role in assessing the energy efficiency of the building. For this reason it is important to analyze each of them individually, as well as the dependencies between them.

Abstract Evaluating the effects of asymmetric stress distribution around a lateral can greatly help optimize completion techniques and overall production from in-fill horizontal wells in unconventional shale and tight reservoirs. Several factors affect long-term production from in-fill drilled wells including but not limited to pressure depletion from produced wells, change of effective stresses in the depleted formation and interference between hydraulic fractures when the new in-fill wells are drilled, stimulated and brought into production. The study addresses a variety of key challenges that the unconventional oil and gas industry is looking to understand. These include understanding: How the presence of a depleted wellbore affects hydraulic fracture propagation from a nearby newly drilled wellHow refracturing considerations in a producing well are affected by hydrocarbon drainage and modified stress contrastsHow fracturing/refracturing pumping designs and volumes should be optimized to address the challenges surrounding the wellbore Under circumstances mentioned above, pressure distribution around the wellbore from hydrocarbon drainage was estimated by history matching production data over a certain period of time. Then the impact of various types of fracturing treatments on pressure depletion profiles from offset wells was studied using a fully numerical fracture simulator that is capable of handling asymmetric stress distribution around the lateral. Fracture geometries from this study were either asymmetric due to depletion on only one side of the lateral or longer due to increased stress contrast. These fracture geometries were fed to a production model to forecast long-term production from in-fill wells and study drainage patterns over time. Understanding these challenges provided a sub-surface perspective of how completion techniques should be optimized to get maximum hydrocarbon recovery from reservoirs consisting of laterals that have already been on production.
