In tilting-pad journal bearings (TPJB) with a non-flooded lubrication concept, higher maximum pad temperatures occur than with a flooded bearing design due to the lower convective heat transfer at the pad edges. In this paper, we present an approach to influence the thermal behavior of a five-pad TPJB by active cooling. The aim of this research is to investigate the influence of additional oil supply grooves at the trailing edge of the two loaded pads on the maximum pad temperature of a large TPJB in non-flooded design. We carry out experimental and numerical investigations for a redesigned test bearing. Within the experimental analysis, the reduction in pad temperature is quantified. A simulation model of the bearing is synthesized with respect to the additional oil supply grooves. The simulation results are compared with the experimental data to derive heat transfer coefficients for the pad surfaces. The experimental results indicate a considerable reduction of the maximum pad temperatures. An overall lower temperature level is observed for the rear pad in circumferential direction (pad 4). The authors attribute this effect by a cooling oil carry-over from the previous pad (3). Within the model limits, a good agreement of the simulation and experimental results can be found.

A series of four-start spirally corrugated tubes has been subjected to heat transfer and hydrodynamic testing in a double-pipe heat exchanger. The study has been focused on the non-symmetric nature of the corrugation angles along the longitudinal direction. Both friction factors and heat transfer coefficients inside the tubes have been correlated against various process parameters. It can be shown that by altering the internal non-symmetric wavy shapes of the tubes, one is able to manipulate heat transfer and friction characteristics. The experimental results have been compared with some popular correlation models developed previously for both friction and heat transfer for corrugated tubes. Considerable differences between the experimental results and the predictions made using the existing correlations have been found and the probable causes have been discussed. Performance evaluation criteria are presented using the standard constant power criterion. A neural network modeling approach has been taken so that, based on the limited data, one can generate the contour showing the effect of corrugation angle on heat transfer coefficient for geometry optimization purposes.

Abstract In this paper, optimization of the location and the geometry of a vortex promoter located above in a finned surface in a channel with eight heat sources is investigated for a Reynolds number of 12,500 < Re < 27,700. Heat transfer rates and the corresponding Nusselt number distributions are studied both experimentally and numerically using different vortex promoter geometries (square, circular, and triangular) in different locations to illustrate the effect of vortex promoter on the fluid flow. Optimization study considered a range of following parameters: blockage ratio of 0.30 < (y/C) < 0.45 and interpromoter distance ratio of 0.2277 < (x/L) < 0.3416. Results show that fins over which rectangular and circular promoters are integrated perform better in enhancing the heat transfer. According to the numerical and experimental results, higher blockage ratios cause significantly higher heat transfer coefficients. According to the observations, as the interpromoter distances increase, shedding gains strength, and more turbulence is created. All vortex promoters enhance heat transfer resulting in lower temperature values on the finned surface for different (y/C) and (x/L) values and Reynolds numbers. The use of promoters enhances the heat transfer, and the decrease in the maximum temperature values is recorded on the finned surface changing between 15% and 27%. The biggest decrease in maximum surface temperature value is 500 K–364 K and observed in circular promoter case with (y/C) = 0.43, (x/L) = 0.3416, and Reynolds numbers of 22,200.

Local and average heat transfer coefficients and friction factors were measured in a test section simulating the trailing edge cooling cavity of a turbine airfoil. The test rig with a trapezoidal cross sectional area was rib-roughened on two opposite sides of the trapezoid (airfoil pressure and suction sides) with tapered ribs to conform to the cooling cavity shape and had a 22-degree tilt in the flow direction upstream of the ribs that affected the heat transfer coefficients on the two rib-roughened surfaces. The radial cooling flow traveled from the airfoil root to the tip while exiting through 22 cooling holes along the airfoil trailing edge. Two rib geometries, with and without the presence of the trailing-edge cooling holes, were examined. The numerical model contained the entire trailing-edge channel, ribs and trailing-edge cooling holes to simulate exactly the tested geometry. A pressure-correction based, multi-block, multi-grid, unstructured/adaptive commercial software was used in this investigation. Realizable k–ε turbulence model in conjunction with enhanced wall treatment approach for the near wall regions, was used for turbulence closure. The applied thermal boundary conditions to the CFD models matched the test boundary conditions. Comparisons are made between the experimental and numerical results.

Quasi-local absorption heat transfer coefficients and pressure drop inside a horizontal tube absorber have been investigated experimentally, with R-22/DMA as the working pair. The absorber is a counterflow coaxial tube-in-tube heat-exchanger with the working fluid flowing in the inner tube while the water moves through the annulus. A large temperature gliding has been experienced during the absorption process. Experimental results show that the heat transfer coefficient of the forced convective vapor absorption process is higher compared to the vertical falling film absorption. A qualitative study is made to analyze the effect of mass flux, vapor quality and solution concentration on pressure drop and heat transfer coefficients. On the basis of the experimental results, a new correlation is proposed whereby the two-phase heat transfer is taken as a product of the forced convection of the absorption and the combined effect of heat and mass transfer at the interface. The correlation is found to predict the experimental data almost within 30 percent.

Thermal issues of gas turbine blade trailing edge are complex and challenging, due to limited space for effective cooling. The trailing edge cavities are usually large aspect ratio ducts with lateral ejection. The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of different rib configurations and lateral ejection on heat transfer characteristics inside a trailing edge channel. The investigations were conducted on a large aspect ratio wedge-shaped channel with square ribs of e/Dh = 0.05, under Reynolds number 15,000. Twelve different configurations were tested: 1)three rib types, including a symmetry V-shaped rib configuration and two non-symmetry V-shaped rib configurations, of which the rib angles are 60 degrees, 2) two rib pitches, P/e = 10 and P/e = 5, 3) two flow directions, with an open tip outlet or with lateral ejection. Spatially resolved heat transfer distributions were obtained using the transient thermochromic liquid crystal experimental method. The configurations were also investigated numerically for the detailed flow field and for the validation of CFD codes. Results show that with lateral ejection, the heat transfer coefficients decrease from inlet to outlet. The heat transfer near the ejection holes is enhanced while heat transfer coefficients near the wall opposite to the exit holes decrease. The curvature of the streamlines creates a large separation area near the end of the channel and thus results in low local heat transfer coefficients. The P/e = 10 configurations have higher average heat transfer compared with P/e = 5 configurations. Average heat transfer coefficient is the highest with the center of the V-shaped rib placed at the middle of the channel, and is the lowest when the V-shaped rib center is located near the narrow part of the channel.

Airfoil trailing-edge cooling is the main focus of this study. The test section was made up of two adjacent trapezoidal channels, simulating the trailing-edge cooling cavity of a gas turbine airfoil and its neighboring cavity. Eleven racetrack-shaped holes were drilled on the partition wall between the two channels to produce 11 cross-over jets that impinged on the rib-roughened wall of the trailing-edge channel. The jets, after impinging on their respective target surface, turned toward the trailing-edge channel exit. Smooth target wall, as a baseline case, as well as four rib angles with the flow of 0 deg, 45 deg, 90 deg, and 135 deg are investigated. Cross-over holes axes were on the trailing-edge channel center plane, i.e., no tilting of the cross-over jets. Steady-state liquid crystal thermography technique was used in this study for a range of jet Reynolds number of 10,000–35,000. The test results are compared with the numerical results obtained from the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes and energy equation. Closure was attained by k–ω with shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model. The entire test rig (supply and trailing-edge channels) was meshed with variable density hexagonal meshes. The numerical work was performed for boundary conditions identical to those of the tests. In addition to the impingement heat transfer coefficients, the numerical results provided the mass flow rates through individual cross-over holes. This study concluded that: (a) the local Nusselt numbers correlate well with the local jet Reynolds numbers, (b) 90 deg rib arrangement, that is, when the cross-over jet axis was parallel to the rib longitudinal axis, produced higher heat transfer coefficients, compared to other rib angles, and (c) numerical heat transfer results were generally in good agreement with the test results. The overall difference between the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and test results was about 10%.

To improve operational safety and/or achieve a higher load capacity of turbine tilting-pad bearings, an axially concave pad profile is presented. The thermal and mechanical stress of the loaded pads of a test bearing in load between pivot configuration has been analysed. Both film thickness and pressure distribution have been measured at a very high resolution. A fluid film calculation program in combination with a finite-volume-based structural mechanics program is used to simulate the deformation of a single pad under high circumferential speeds. In this context, the axial and tangential heat transfer coefficients of the pad surface, which act as boundary conditions for the calculation of the 3D temperature distribution, are determined using an optimization process. Herein, the match of predicted and measured pad temperatures is the goal. It can be shown that there must be a huge difference in heat transfer in axial and tangential direction in order to match the large measured temperature gradient in circumferential direction. Based on the measured deformed profile the program code is used to derive a concave pad profile, which will result in an axially non-arched sliding surface under the expected thermal load. Therefore, an iterative simulation procedure is used. By decreasing the axial arching of the pad and thus the large film thickness at the axial ends using an improved profile designed for a specific operation point, the minimum film thickness and maximum pad temperature can be influenced beneficially. The comparison of measurement data and calculation results shows very good agreement regarding the pad deformations. The results indicate that by axially concave profiling of the loaded pads of a large tilting-pad bearing for a specific operation point, the static characteristics in the form of temperature, film thickness and load capacity can be improved.

To enhance the internal heat transfer around the airfoil leading-edge area, a combination of rib-roughened cooling channels, film cooling and impingement cooling is often employed. Experimental data for impingement on various leading-edge geometries are reported by these and other investigators. Effects of strong crossflows on the leading-edge impingement heat transfer, however, have not been studied to that extent. This investigation dealt with impingement on the leading-edge of an airfoil in the presence of crossflows beyond the crossflow created by the upstream jets (spent air). Measurements of heat transfer coefficients on the airfoil nose area as well as the pressure and suction side areas are reported. The tests were run for a range of axial to jet mass flow rates (Maxial/Mjet) ranging from 1.14 to 6.4 and and jet Reynolds numbers ranging from 8000 to 48000. Comparisons are also made between the experimental results of impingement with and without the presence of crossflow and between representative numerical and measured heat transfer results. It was concluded that the presence of the external crossflow reduces the impinging jet effectiveness both on the nose and side walls, even for an axial to jet mass flow ratio as high as 5, the convective heat transfer coefficient produced by the axial channel flow was less than that of the impinging jet without the presence of the external crossflow, and the agreement between the numerical and experimental results was reasonable with an average difference ranging from −8% to −20%.
