The age hardening response of a high-purity Al–4Cu–1Li–0.25Mn alloy (wt. %) during isothermal aging without and with an applied external load was investigated. Plate shaped nanometer size T1 (Al2CuLi) and θ′ (Al2Cu) hardening phases were formed. The precipitates were analyzed with respect to the development of their structure, size, number density, volume fraction and associated transformation strains by conducting transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) studies in combination with geometrical phase analysis (GPA). Special attention was paid to the thickening of T1 phase. Two elementary types of single-layer T1 precipitate, one with a Li-rich (Type 1) and another with an Al-rich (Defect Type 1) central layer, were identified. The results show that the Defect Type 1 structure can act as a precursor for the Type 1 structure. The thickening of T1 precipitates occurs by alternative stacking of these two elementary structures. The thickening mechanism was analyzed based on the magnitude of strain associated with the precipitation transformation normal to its habit plane. Long-term aging and aging under load resulted in thicker and structurally defected T1 precipitates. Several types of defected precipitates were characterized and discussed. For θ′ precipitates, a ledge mechanism of thickening was observed. Compared to the normal aging, an external load applied to the peak aged state leads to small variations in the average sizes and volume fractions of the precipitates.

AbstractEpitaxial single layer (001) SrTiO3 films and an epitaxial Yba2Cu3O7-x/SrTiO3 multilayer were dc and rf sputtered on (110)rhombohedral LaAIO3 substrates. The microstructure of the films was characterised using transmission electron microscopy. The single layer SrTiO3 films exhibited different columnar morphologies. The column boundaries were due to the lattice mismatch between film and substrate. The boundaries were associated with interfacial dislocations at the film/substrate interface, where the dislocations relaxed the strain in the a, b plane. The columns consisted of individual subgrains. These subgrains were misoriented with respect to each other, with different in-plane orientations and different tilts of the (001) planes. The subgrain boundaries were antiphase or tilt boundaries. The individual layers of the Yba2Cu3O7-x/SrTiO3 multilayer were relatively uniform. A distortion of the SrTiO3 unit cell of 0.9% in the ‘001’ direction and a Sr/Ti ratio of 0.62±0.04 was observed, both in correspondence with the single layer SrTiO3 films. Areas with different tilt of the (001)-planes were also present, within each individual SrTiO3 layer.

ABSTRACTLithographic techniques have been used to prepare transmission electron microscopy samples of MoS2, allowing examination of the edge surface with single-layer resolution. We observe that these surfaces are easily disordered by chemical treatments common in the catalysis industry. In some cases treatment in H2/H2S leads to an exfoliation of the layered structure, a process which can be observed as it occurs in the microscope.

Objective. This study aimed to investigate the effects of Ang-1 on neovascularization of diabetic organs by subcutaneous Matrigel angiogenesis model, established in type 1 diabetic rats. Methods. Ang-1 adenoviral vector was constructed. The rat model was established by STZ and divided into four group. The Matrigel was inserted subcutaneously into the abdominal cavity of rats at 8 weeks, the treatment group was injected with Ang-1 adenovirus vector via tail vein, and the rats were sacrificed at 10 weeks. Neovascularization of Matrigel was observed with transmission electron microscopy. The marker of vascular endothelial cell and pericyte were detected by immunofluorescence. Immunohistochemical detection of the neovascular endothelial junction protein was performed. RT-PCR was used to determine protein expression of neovascular in Matrigel. Results. Vascular cavity-like structure could be seen in subcutaneous Matrigel of diabetic rats, and the cavity was filled with a lot of red blood cells. Transmission electron microscopy showed that neovascular endothelial structure of the Matrigel was incomplete, while the Ang-1 treatment group had more vascular cavity-like structures, intact vascular endothelial structure, and reduced inflammatory cell infiltration in Matrigel. Additionally, the integrity of vascularization improved, and the marker of pericyte and the cell tight junctions protein was upregulated in Ang-1 treatment group. Conclusion. Hyperglycemia could induce pathological angiogenesis in subcutaneous Matrigel of diabetic rats, and Ang-1 could upregulate the expression of intercellular junction protein in subcutaneous Matrigel of diabetic rats and promote the integrity of neovascularization in the subcutaneous Matrigel of diabetic rats.

We have used conventional and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy to investigate the microstruture of epitaxial, ferroelectric PbTiO3 films grown by pulsed laser ablation on (001) MgO single crystals, and on MgO covered with epitaxial Pt or SrTiO3. Pronounced variations are found in the widths and lengths of a-axis-oriented domains in these films, although the volume fraction of a-axis-oriented material varies only weakly for the different types of samples. In addition, the films deposited onto Pt-coated MgO have a larger grain size than those deposited onto bare MgO or SrTiO3/MgO. Possible reasons for the variations in the distribution of a-axis-oriented material in these samples include differences in the elastic properties and electrical conductivities of the different substrate combinations.

The higher mechanical strength of Al87Ce3Ni8.5Mn1.5 nanophase amorphous composites has been obtained with two methods. The first nanophase amorphous composites are directly produced by the single roller spin quenching technology. The method taken for the second nanophase amorphous composites is at first to obtain amorphous single-phase alloy, followed by annealed at different temperatures .The formative condition, the microstructure, the particle size, the volume fraction of α-Al phase and microhardness of nanophase amorphous composites etc have been investigated and compared by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The microstructure of composites produced by the second method is higher than the former, the fabricated material structure of the system is more uniform and the process is easier to control.

ABSTRACTNi/NiO interface structures were investigated using TEM, and the observed structures were compared with current heterophase interface models. Relative magnitudes of Ni/NiO interfacial energies were obtained from measurements of dihedral angles at triple grain junctions between Ni and NiO grains. Extra reflections in diffraction patterns from oxide grains adjacent to the Ni/NiO interface were compared with kinematical structure factor calculations for several proposed structures.

ABSTRACTThe results of transmission electron microscopy studies of iron implantation into high purity aluminum foils are described. For both 50 and 100 + 50 keV incident ion energies, modulated structure has been detected in the as-implanted foils. Upon annealing at 793 K the modulated structure decomposes into the Al matrix and Al3Fe precipitates for the 50 keV implantation. A similar annealing treatment for the 100 + 50 keV implantation indicates that the modulated structure is more stable, although some Fe3Al precipitation occurs.

Samples of Ti-15Cr and Ti-15V-3Sn-3Al-3Cr (wt%) containing controlled additions of carbon up to 0.2wt% and different oxygen contents have been quenched and aged at temperatures between 400 and 600°C. Optical, scanning and analytical transmission electron microscopy have been used to characterise the microstructures of the quenched and aged samples. Hardness testing has been used to follow the kinetics and extent of age hardening, which are accelerated in Ccontaining samples. The addition of carbon results in the formation of Ti(CxOy) precipitates which pin grain boundaries in forged samples so that the grain size in the quenched C-containing samples is about a factor of ten less than that in the C-free samples. In the C-free samples coarse grain boundary alpha tends to form, but in the C-containing samples alpha precipitation is more uniform throughout the beta grains. The extent of omega precipitation is very different in the two alloys; the Ti-15Cr alloy forms athermal omega in the as-quenched samples and large omega precipitates are formed on ageing at 400°C. No evidence for omega has been obtained in the Ti-15-3. The hardening responses and microstructural observations are interpreted in terms of the different grain boundary oxygen contents in the C-containing and C-free samples and the different roles of omega and of carbon in the two alloys.
