In this paper, the performance of a warm-mixed porous asphalt mixture (PAM) with steel slag as aggregate and crumb-rubber–SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) modified bitumen as a binder was studied. Two kinds of warming additives were used, namely ethylene bis stearic acid amide (EBS) and stearic acid amide (SA). The mixtures were investigated for their permeability, Marshall stability, low-temperature crack resistance, and underwent a rutting test, water sensitivity evaluation and Cantabro particle loss test. Then, the viscoelastic and dynamic characteristics of the mixtures were also analyzed. The results showed that the addition of the warming additives allowed the decrease of the manufacturing temperature by 10 °C. Thus, the addition of warming additives significantly improves the low-temperature crack resistance and slightly reduces the water sensitivity, weakly increases the permeability, and has little effect on the resilient modulus. Since the addition of SA significantly improves the low-temperature crack resistance and rutting resistance of the PAM, SA is therefore recommended for pavement engineering in seasonal frozen regions.

Additives on low temperature compaction and performances of compacted mixtures, the author devised low temperature environment compaction test, and then, comparison tests of volume parameters, high temperature stability, low temperature crack resistance and water sensitivity were conducted. Tests results showed that the wax additives and the surface-active additive can significantly contribute to mixtures low-temperature compactibility. The wax additive helps to improve high temperature stability obviously, and has no significant contribution to low temperature crack resistance and water sensitivity. The surface-active additive directly reduces water sensitivity, the wax additive indirectly plays the role of reducing water sensitivity by increasing the density of mixture, and the foam additive has no obvious effect on the water sensitivity.

This paper studies the mechanical properties of porous asphalt concrete with styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymer modified bitumen as the binder, steel slag as the aggregate and crumb rubber and basalt fiber as modifiers. First, the appearance, mechanics, chemical composition and high-temperature stability of steel slag were studied by some equipment. Then, three kinds of porous asphalt concrete with SBS polymer modified bitumen as binder were produced, Namely, crumb rubber modified porous asphalt concrete (CR-PAC), basalt fiber modified porous asphalt concrete (BF-PAC), and basalt fiber and crumb rubber composite modified asphalt concrete (CM-PAC). Finally, the properties of the three kinds of modified PACs were studied through the Marshall test, freeze-thaw splitting test, low-temperature splitting test, permeability test, and creep test. The results showed that the crush value and abrasion value of steel slag are 15.1% and 13.5%, respectively; it has excellent strength and abrasion. In addition, the steel slag shows a porous structure and it provides an interface basis for a better bond with bitumen. For the three PACs, the results showed that the Marshall stability, water stability, and low-temperature crack resistance of CM-PAC are all the best Furthermore, CM-PAC has better rutting resistance than two single modified PACs, based on creep test results. The CM-PAC in this study can be used as a new type of pavement material.

Road construction consumes great amounts of high-grade natural resources. Using low-grade natural rocks or some solid wastes as substitute materials is a hot topic. Considering this, the feasibility of using low-grade granite aggregate, solid waste-based filler (desulphurization gypsum residues, DGR) and binder (waste tire rubber modified asphalt, RMA) simultaneously in asphalt mixtures has been fully investigated in this research. The commonly used base asphalt and limestone powder (LP) filler were control groups. Material characteristics of raw materials mainly including micro-morphology, functional group, mineral phase, chemical composition and thermal stability were first evaluated in order to recognize them. Four asphalt mixtures (two asphalt binder and two filler) were then designed by standard Superpave method. Finally, a detailed investigation into the pavement performance of asphalt mixtures was carried out. The moisture damage resistance and low-temperature crack resistance were detected by the changing rules of stability, strength and fracture energy, and the high-temperature stability and fatigue performance were determined by wheel tracking test and indirect tensile (IDT) fatigue test, respectively. Results suggested that RMA and DGR both showed positive effects on the low-temperature crack resistance and fatigue property of the granite asphalt mixture. DGR also strengthened moisture stability. The contribution of RMA on high-temperature deformation resistance of the granite asphalt mixture was compelling. It can offset the insufficiency in high-temperature stability made by DGR. A conclusion can be made that asphalt mixture prepared with granite, DGR and RMA possesses satisfactory pavement performances.

It was based on laboratory test, in order to study on the high temperature stability, water stability and low-temperature crack resistance of AC-16 reclaiming asphalt mixture with different proportion of old material, this test takes into account 9 kinds of these asphalt mixture. The results show, with the old material blending ratio increased, the high temperature stability of asphalt mixture changed for the better, water stability and low-temperature crack resistance deteriorated. The pavement performance meet the requirements of secondary road or less, when old material content is within 70%. The research results provide reference for the application of reclaiming asphalt mixture.

According to the phenomenon of pavement cracking in low temperature in Northeast China, AC-13I and AK-13I of the two gradations, SBS, Methyl Cellulose fiber and steel fiber are adopted to research the mechanics parameters of reinforced asphalt mixture by Indirect tension test at minus 10 degrees centigrade entering on pavement material. Improvement of the low-temperature indirect tensile strength, stiffness and deformation capacity of asphalt mixture is analyzed and mechanisms are revealed. The results indicate that low-temperature crack resistance of steel fiber-reinforced AC-13I asphalt mixture is improved significantly, it is better for the cold area in Northeast.

In order to improve the low temperature evaluation, on the basis of the low temperature bending test unit volume destruction to evaluate the low temperature crack resistance of asphalt mixtures. Since the destruction can be indicators of unit volume mixture critical flexural tensile strain and flexural strength of two indicators integrated. Therefore, use it to assess the low temperature crack resistance of asphalt mixture is more scientific, the indicators has also become a new method of low-temperature research areas.
