In this study, the influence of rotary-die equal channel angular pressing (RD-ECAP) processing on the mechanical properties and rolling formability of AZ91 alloys was investigated. The as-cast and pre-homogenized AZ91 alloys were pre-processed by RD-ECAP for 16 passes at 573 K and subjected to post-ECAP rolling at 573 K with a rolling speed of 10 m/min. The microstructure and deformation characteristics of the AZ91 alloys were characterized. Results demonstrated that fine-grained AZ91 alloys with improved strength and ductility were obtained via the high-pass RD-ECAP processing, indicating a good plastic formability. The ECAP-ed alloys were easily rolled at 573 K from 4.5 mm to 1.1 mm in thickness without edge cracking. After rolling, heterogeneous grain structures were observed with large numbers of twins and shear bands that created strong basal textures. The rolled AZ91 alloys exhibited higher tensile strength and appropriate elongation. The post-ECAP rolling was successfully used in the high productivity of AZ91 rolled plates with good mechanical properties.

The addition of Nd significantly improves the mechanical properties of magnesium alloys. However, only limited amounts of Nd or other rare earth (RE) elements should be used due to their high price. In this study, a low-alloyed Mg–1% Zn–1% Nd (ZN11) alloy was designed and processed by hot extrusion and subsequent equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) in order to achieve a very fine-grained condition with enhanced strength. The microstructure, texture, and mechanical properties were thoroughly studied. The microstructure after 8 passes through ECAP was homogeneous and characterized by an average grain size of 1.5 µm. A large number of tiny secondary phase precipitates were identified as ordered Guinier–Preston (GP) zones. Detailed analysis of the Schmid factors revealed the effect of the texture on deformation mechanisms. ECAP processing more than doubled the achieved yield compression strength (YCS) of the ZN11 alloy. Significant strengthening by ECAP is caused by grain refinement and the formation of ordered Guinier–Preston zones and particles of a secondary γ-phase.

Mg and Mg alloys are promising materials for light weight high strength applications. In this paper, grain refinement of pure Mg using severe plastic deformation was tried to enhance mechanical properties of the hard-to-deform metallic material. The microstructure and the mechanical properties of Mg processed by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) at various processing temperatures were investigated experimentally. ECAP of channel angle of 90o and corner angle of 0o was successful without fracture of the samples at 300 oC. The hardness of the ECAP processed Mg decreased with increasing ECAP processing temperature. The effect of temperature on the hardness and microstructure of the ECAP processed Mg were explained by the dislocation glide in the basal plane and non-basal slip systems and the dynamic recrystallization and recovery.

The effects of equal channel angular pressing (ECAP), further heat treatment and rolling on the structure and room temperature mechanical properties of the commercial aluminum alloys 6061 (Al-0.9Mg-0.7Si) and 1560 (Al-6.5Mg-0.6Mn) were investigated. It has been shown that the strength of the alloys after ECAP is higher than that achieved after conventional processing. Prior ECAP solution treatment and post-ECAP ageing can additionally increase the strength of the 6061 alloy. Under optimal ageing conditions a yield strength (YS) of 434 MPa and am ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 470 MPa were obtained for the alloy. Additional cold rolling leads to a YS and UTS of 475 and 500 MPa with 8% elongation. It was found that the post-ECAP isothermal rolling of the 1560 alloy resulted in the formation of a nano-fibred structure and a tensile strength (YS = 540 MPa and UTS = 635 MPa) that has never previously been observed in commercial non-heat treatable alloys.

Equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) method was used for achieving very fine-grained structure and increased mechanical properties of AZ31 magnesium alloy. The experiments were focused on the, in the initial state, hot extruded alloy. ECAP process was realized at the temperature 250°C and following route Bc. It was found that combination of hot extrusion and ECAP leads to producing of material with significantly fine-grained structure and improves mechanical properties. Alloy structure after the fourth pass of ECAP tool with helix matrix 30° shows a fine-grained structure with average grain size of 2 µm to 3 µm and high disorientation between the grains. More experimental results are discussed in this article.

The shear deformation behavior of the course-grained Cu-8wt%Ag alloy processed by one pass of equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) was revealed through the metallurgical microscope and the scanning electron microscope. Through the macro-level and micro-level synthesis analysis, it is confirmed that there are two shear deformation during the ECAP processing: the one along the intersection plane (IP) and the other along the vertical plane to the IP. And it is estimated that theoretical ranges of two shear angles are-32°<θ1<0° and 43°<θ2<58° respectively. Finally, it is also proved that the evolution of the shear bands is affected by the parallel and vertical shear to the IP of the ECAP die, and that, besides the shear along the IP, the shear along the vertical plane to the IP also plays an important role during the plastic deformation.

This work presents the possibility of strength enhancement in the -alloy Ti-6.8Mo-4.5Fe-1.5Al via equal channel angular pressing at room temperature without precipitation of a secondary -phase. Influence of the initial structure of the alloy and ageing temperature on the density of precipitations and dimensions of the secondary -phase is revealed. It has been stated that combination of the solid solution treatment with the subsequent ECAP processing and final ageing is an effective way to achieve superior strength and ductility.

The microstructures and mechanical properties of unidirectional deformation structured Al alloy during ECAP with various deformation routes were investigated. In order to fabricate unidirectional deformation structure for Al alloy, hot extrusion was carried out. It was found that the deformation route A in ECAP routes is the dominant route for the grain refinement and strengthening. In deformation route A, the high strength ultra-fine grained Al alloy with a grain size of ~ 200 nm was obtained due to the accumulation of consecutive strain process. In contrast, the strength of ECAP’ed Al alloy produced via deformation route C was greatly increased after one pass because the grains were strained and cancelled each pass. By contrast, the equiaxed grains were obtained in deformation route BC because the sample was rotated 90 O in the same sense in each pass. The deformation route BC was superior to the deformation route C because the deformation route BC was more favorable than the deformation route C in the accumulation of consecutive strain. It is also found that unidirectional deformation structured Al alloy via hot extrusion shows similar grain refinement tendency with equiaxed structured Al alloy during ECAP processing.

This work is focused on the effect of the combination of natural aging and severe plastic deformation (SPD) produced by Equal-Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP) on the microstructure and strength of supersaturated AlZnMg alloys. Following a solution heat-treatment and quenching into water at room temperature, samples were naturally aged for different time periods and then processed by ECAP. The microstructure and mechanical properties of these samples are described and discussed. This investigation leads to proposing an interesting application of ECAP for supersaturated alloys. Using the shear bands created by ECAP in only one pass and applying appropriate subsequent aging treatments, composite-like microstructures can be achieved in conventional age-hardenanble Al alloys.
