In this work, we continued our systematic investigations on synthesis, structural studies, and electrochemical behavior of Ni-rich materials Li[NixCoyMnz]O2 (x + y + z = 1; x ≥ 0.8) for advanced lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). We focused, herein, on LiNi0.85Co0.10Mn0.05O2 (NCM85) and demonstrated that doping this material with high-charge cation Mo6+ (1 at. %, by a minor nickel substitution) results in substantially stable cycling performance, increased rate capability, lowering of the voltage hysteresis, and impedance in Li-cells with EC-EMC/LiPF6 solutions. Incorporation of Mo-dopant into the NCM85 structure was carried out by in-situ approach, upon the synthesis using ammonium molybdate as the precursor. From X-ray diffraction studies and based on our previous investigation of Mo-doped NCM523 and Ni-rich NCM811 materials, it was revealed that Mo6+ preferably substitutes Ni residing either in 3a or 3b sites. We correlated the improved behavior of the doped NCM85 electrode materials in Li-cells with a partial Mo segregation at the surface and at the grain boundaries, a tendency established previously in our lab for the other members of the Li[NixCoyMnz]O2 family.

Lithium-ion batteries are based on the principle of intercalation of lithium ions in host materials, both at the anode and at the cathode. These materials are in general crystalline and, during the operation of the battery, they undergo numerous phase transitions and structural rearrangements, often amplified by the presence of an applied potential difference. Whilein situX-ray diffraction is an established technique in this field,in situneutron diffraction is still in its pioneering stages and only a few attempts have been made to design an electrochemical cell suitable for these experiments. The technical development of such a device, along with a discussion of its serviceability to combine electrochemical measurements with neutron diffraction experiments, is hereby presented.

High-performance robust CNT–graphene–Si composites are designed as anode materials with enhanced rate capability and excellent cycling stability for lithium-ion batteries. Such an improvement is mainly attributed to the robust sponge-like architecture, which holds great promise in future practical applications.

The platelike Co3O4/carbon nanofiber (CNF) composite materials were synthesized by the calcination of β-Co(OH)2/CNF precursor prepared by a surfactant-free hydrothermal method. As negative electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries, the platelike Co3O4/CNF composites can deliver a high reversible capacity of 900 mAh g-1 for a life extending over hundreds of cycles at a current density of 100 mA g-1. The high Li-storage capacity and excellent cycling performance for Co3O4/CNF composite materials may mainly attribute to the beneficial effect of the CNFs addition on enhancing structural stability and electrical conductivity of Co3O4 platelets.

ABSTRACTAn efficient microwave-assisted polyol (MP) approach is report to prepare SnO2/graphene hybrid as an anode material for lithium ion batteries. The key factor to this MP method is to start with uniform graphene oxide (GO) suspension, in which a large amount of surface oxygenate groups ensures homogeneous distribution of the SnO2 nanoparticles onto the GO sheets under the microwave irradiation. The period for the microwave heating only takes 10 min. The obtained SnO2/graphene hybrid anode possesses a reversible capacity of 967 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C and a high Coulombic efficiency of 80.5% at the first cycle. The cycling performance and the rate capability of the hybrid anode are enhanced in comparison with that of the bare graphene anode. This improvement of electrochemical performance can be attributed to the formation of a 3-dimensional framework. Accordingly, this study provides an economical MP route for the fabrication of SnO2/graphene hybrid as an anode material for high-performance Li-ion batteries.

A binder plays an important role in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), especially for the electrode materials which have large volume expansion during charge and discharge. In this work, we designed a cross-linked polymeric binder with an esterification reaction of Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) and Fumaric Acid (FA), and successfully used it in an Sb2O3 anode for LIBs. Compared with conventional binder polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and CMC, the new cross-linked binder improves the electrochemical stability of the Sb2O3 anode. Specifically, with CMC-FA binder, the battery could deliver ~611.4 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles under the current density of 0.2 A g−1, while with PVDF or CMC binder, the battery degraded to 265.1 and 322.3 mAh g−1, respectively. The improved cycling performance is mainly due to that the cross-linked CMC-FA network could not only efficiently improve the contact between Sb2O3 and conductive agent, but can also buffer the large volume charge of the electrode during repeated charge/discharge cycles.
