Background and objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic has had an unprecedented reliance on informal caregivers as one of the pillars of healthcare systems. The aim of this study was to assess the quality of life of informal caregivers during the COVID-19 epidemic in Serbia. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among informal caregivers during the COVID-19 epidemic in Serbia. Physical and mental quality of life was measured by the 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey. Additional data included sociodemographic characteristics, caregiver and care recipient characteristics, and COVID-19 related concerns. The qualitative component was performed using focus groups and individual in-depth interviews. Results: Out of 112 informal caregivers enrolled, most were female (80%), and the average age was 51.1 ± 12.3 years. The majority was delivering care to one person, who was a family member, on a daily basis (86.4%, 92%, and 91.1%, respectively). In multiple regression models, significant predictors of caregivers’ physical health were delivering care to a family member and a higher level of care complexity, while significant predictors of caregivers’ mental health were a higher level of care complexity and increased concerns about self-health and the health of the person being cared for due to the COVID-19 epidemic. Conclusions: Informal caregivers are experiencing negative physical and mental health outcomes during the COVID-19 epidemic in Serbia.

Thalassaemia is a disease of abnormal development of red blood cells which manifests as anaemia. This chronic disease may cause mental, social, financial burdens on the families, care givers and also on health care system. To assess the quality of life (QOL) of the caregivers of thalassaemic children and to identify the predictors of quality of their physical and mental health.Institution based descriptive cross-sectional study conducted in the Thalassaemia Control Unit (TCU) of North Bengal Medical College (NBMC) from December 2018 to April 2019. Total 136 caregivers of children (≤12 years) with thalassaemia were included by complete enumeration method. Physical and mental health of the caregivers were reported in Short Form-36 (SF-36) Health Survey. Collected data were entered into MS-Excel, analysed with the help of SPSS (Version 22).Mean age of caregivers was 34.3 (SD ± 1.4 years). Most of caregivers were female (89%) and had educational qualification up to Primary school (45.6%). Majority (70.6%) of the caregivers were the mothers of the children. Most of the study participants (60.3%) had favourable Physical health Component Summary (PCS) but 64.7% of the caregivers had unfavourable Mental health component Summary (MCS). Educational status was found to be the predictor for PCS but age and relationship with the child were the predictors for MCS.Counselling, psychotherapy, social support for family members or caregivers of the thalassaemic children and community involvement with their full participation should be emphasized to reduce stigma related to thalassaemia.

Abstract Background Facial appearance and expressions influence social interaction. However, few studies have reported on the stigma associated with spasms from facial dystonia. This study investigated the stigma and quality of life for these patients. Methods This cross-sectional study included 90 patients with facial dystonia (hemifacial spasm [HFS], blepharospasm [BSP], and blepharospasm-oromandibular dystonia [BOD]; 30 patients per group) and 30 individuals without dystonia (control group) from October 2019 to November 2020. All participants underwent stigma, quality of life, and mental health evaluations using seven questions related to stigma, the 36-item Short Form Health Survey, the 14-item version of the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA), and the 24-item version of the Hamilton Depression Scale. Results Nineteen patients (21.11%) felt stigmatized. Patients with BPS and HFS had more difficulty finding a job and were more susceptible to discrimination than healthy individuals. The role-physical and social function scores were significantly lower in the dystonia groups than in the control group. The vitality score of the BPS group and the mental health scores in the BPS and BOD groups were significantly less than those of the control group. The HAMA scores in the BPS and BOD groups were significantly higher than in the control group. Regression analysis demonstrated that the disease course influenced depression. Conclusion Enacted stigma from a negative public attitude may be the main factor triggering stigma in patients with facial dystonia, with detrimental effects on psychosocial outcomes, including social rights, quality of life, and mood.

This study aims to explore if objectively and subjectively measured sleep parameters are associated with physical and mental health-related quality of life in a multiethnic working population in Singapore. We performed a cross-sectional analysis with data from 329 full-time employees enrolled in a workplace cohort study in Singapore. The Short-Form 36v2 (SF-36v2) survey was used to assess health-related quality of life, in terms of physical and mental health. Subjective and objective sleep parameters were measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and wrist actigraphy, respectively. Generalized linear modeling was performed to examine the association between sleep parameters and health-related quality of life. After adjusting for confounders, subjectively measured sleep disturbances were associated with a lower physical health-related quality of life, whereas higher, objectively measured sleep efficiency was associated with greater physical health-related quality of life. Subjectively measured daytime dysfunction was associated with impaired mental health-related quality of life. Using both objective and subjective measurements of sleep, the current study suggests that there is an association between sleep and health-related quality of life. Workplace health-promotion planners in Singapore should consider programmes that educate workers on better sleep hygiene practices in an effort to improve sleep and health-related quality of life.

ABSTRACT Context: In the spring of 2020, schools closed to in-person teaching and sports were cancelled to control the transmission of CoVID-19. The changes that took place to the physical and mental health among young athletes during this time remain unknown, however. Objective: Identify changes in the health (mental health, physical activity and quality of life) of athletes that occurred during the CoVID-19 pandemic. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Sample recruited via social media. Patients or Other Participants: 3243 Wisconsin adolescent athletes (age=16.2±1.2 yrs., female=58% female) completed an online survey in May 2020 (DuringCoVID-19). Health measures for this cohort were compared with previously reported data for Wisconsin adolescent athletes (n=5231, age=15.7±1.2, 47% female) collected in 2016–2018 (PreCoVID-19). Main Outcome Measure(s): Demographic information included: sex, grade and sports played. Health assessments included the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 Item (PHQ-9) to identify depression symptoms, the Pediatric Functional Activity Brief Scale (PFABS) for physical activity, and the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory 4.0 (PedsQL) for health related quality of life (HRQoL). Univariable comparisons of these variables between groups were made via t-tests or chi-square tests. Means and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for each group were estimated by survey weighted ANOVA models. RESULTS: Compared to PreCoVID-19, a larger proportion of the During-CoVID-19 participants reported rates of moderate to severe levels of depression (9.7% vs 32.9%, p<0.001). During-CoVID-19 participants reported 50% lower (worse) PFABS scores (mean:12.2 [95%CI: 11.9, 12.5] vs 24.7 [24.5, 24.9] p<0.001) and lower (worse) PedsQL total scores compared to the PreCoVID-19 participants (78.4 [78.0, 78.8] vs. 90.9 [90.5, 91.3] p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: During the CoVID-19 pandemic, adolescent athletes reported increased symptoms of depression, decreased physical activity and decreased quality of life compared to adolescent athletes in previous years.

Abstract Background The appearance of multidrug-resistant Gram-positive bacteria is a major challenge in clinical care. Omadacycline is the first aminomethylcycline antibiotic (semisynthetic compounds related to tetracyclines) in late-stage clinical development for acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI), and demonstrates potent in vitro activity against many pathogens. Methods Seven hundred thirty-five patients were enrolled in the OASIS-2 randomized controlled trial comparing omadacycline and linezolid for the treatment of adult subjects with ABSSSI known or suspected to be due to a Gram-positive pathogen, with 368 and 367 enrolled in each group, respectively. Subjects completed the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey Version 2 (SF-36v2), a validated questionnaire on physical and mental health, at both screening and post-treatment evaluation. Results of the SF-36v2 were analyzed in accordance with established norm-based standards for the survey (Ware 2000) for the intention-to-treat population. Results Subjects who received omadacycline experienced a 3.25 point mean improvement in overall physical health (P < 0.001, Figure 1) and reported significant improvements across all but one component parameter of overall physical and mental health, including physical functioning, bodily pain, role physical, vitality, role emotional, mental health, and social functioning (Figure 2). In contrast, while overall physical health improved for subjects who received linezolid, the improvement in vitality, role emotional, mental health, and general health was not significant (Figure 2). Although omadacycline achieved greater increase from baseline than linezolid across all domains analyzed, the difference in scores was not statistically significant at the P < 0.05 level (Figure 1). Conclusion Omadacycline provides significant improvement in the physical component of quality of life over baseline for adult subjects with ABSSSI known or suspected to be due to a Gram-positive pathogen. Although the OASIS-2 trial was neither designed nor powered to measure differences in quality of life following treatment, trends identified in this analysis merit further investigation. Abstract Background With increasing importance, health-related quality of life (HRQoL) has become a crucial outcome measure of cardiac surgery. The aim of this study was to assess the dynamics of HRQoL change within 12 months after surgery and to identify predictors of deterioration in physical and mental health. Methods The cohort of this prospective study included 164 consecutive patients who underwent elective surgery. HRQoL was assessed on the basis of the Short-Form 36 questionnaire at three different times: upon admission and at 3 and 12 months after surgery. The minimal clinically important difference (MCID) was used to determine whether the surgery resulted in deterioration of HRQoL. Results In general, physical and mental health status improved within the first year after cardiac surgery. However, after 12 months, 7.9 and 21.2% of patients had clinically significant poorer physical (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS) scores, based on the MCID approach. The results of multivariate analysis identified preoperative health status, age < 70 years, coronary artery bypass grafting, and a previous neurological event as predictors of deterioration in postoperative HRQoL. The greatest risks for deterioration were higher preoperative PCS and MCS scores. Conclusion Although we were able to demonstrate a general improvement in the HRQoL following cardiac surgery, in one-fifth of patients, there was no recovery of mental health status even after 1 year. As this effect is mainly determined by preoperative functional status, HRQoL should be an integral part of medical consultation, especially in younger patients with a positive perception of quality of life.

The most prevalent diseases within the world related to major illness and mortality are chronic liver diseases. The developing pervasiveness of chronic liver disease has resulted in increased interest in health-related quality of life, which incorporates the physical well-being of a patient and his emotional and social well-being. This study aimed to define the quality of life of patients with chronic liver disease. This study used the Quality-of-Life Short Form 36 Indonesian version to examine 102 patients with chronic liver disease from two hospitals with a descriptive design. The quality of life of the patients was comparatively low (M ± SD: physical, 42.4 ± 18.33; mental, 48.44 ± 17.19). On both the physical and mental health dimensions of quality of life, the patients in this study scored less than 50 on a scale of 0 to 100, with low scores indicating the low quality of life both physically and mentally. Improving quality of life necessitates a multidisciplinary strategy that combines physical and mental health screening and management. Surrounding support will encourage adaptive coping mechanisms to manage the illness for improving quality of life. AbstrakPenyakit Hati Kronis Menurunkan Dimensi Kesehatan Fisik dan Mental. Globally, diabetes is ranked as the 4th leading cause of death in terms of disease and places a huge strain on public health funding. Quality of life (QOL) is an important and understudied topic in the diabetes. Most studies reports that quality of life among people with diabetes is worse than QOL in general population. Thus, this study is aimed to assess health related quality of life of diabetic patients. We conducted a hospital- based non experimental prospective study. Total 50 diabetic patients were enrolled in this study by using purposive sampling technique. Short-Form 36 questionnaire was used to assess the QOL of diabetic patients. Among 50 respondents, 27 were female and 23 were male. In physical health, 56% respondents had obtained score above 50, 2% respondents had obtained score 50 and 42% respondents had obtained score below 50.Similarly, in mental health, 56% respondents had obtained score above 50 and 44% respondents had obtained score below50. This result indicates that majority of respondents (56%) had better QOL. It concludes that majority (56%) of respondents had better QOL in both physical and mental health and in physical health 2% had average QOL and 42% had poor QOL and in mental health 44% had poor QOL. So, the family, physician, nurses and policy makers can use this finding to identify and implement appropriate interventions for better management and ultimately improving QOL of diabetic patients.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/jcmc.v4i3.11933Journal of Chitwan Medical College 2014; 4(3): 13-16
