Ethanol extracts of two types of pepper (sweet and hot) were separated into fractions with increasing lipophilicity. After drying the extracts and fractions, their chemical composition, anti-radical activity in the DPPH radical system, and cytotoxic activity against PC-3 and HTC-116 cells were determined. A detailed qualitative analysis of the fractions was performed with the LC-QTOF-MS method. It was found that the chemical composition of pepper fractions did not always reflect their biological activity. The highest antiradical activity was detected in the fraction eluted with 40% methanol from sweet pepper. The highest total content of phenolic compounds was found in an analogous fraction from hot pepper, and this fraction showed the strongest cytotoxic effect on the PC-3 tumour line. The LC-MS analysis identified 53 compounds, six of which were present only in sweet pepper and four only in hot pepper. The unique chemical composition of the extracts was found to modulate their biological activity, which can only be verified experimentally.

A great influence on human health is exerted by substances exhibiting an antioxidant effect, largely contained in raspberries and their juice waste products, specifically in fresh-frozen berries, fresh squeezed juice, water extract, raw and dried pomace and concentrated juice. The aim of the work was to study chemical composition and antioxidant activity of raspberries and their juice waste products, monitor changes in the parameters of the studied characteristics during mechanical and thermal processing of raspberries and select the optimal option. The following methods were used during the research: determination of the total content of anthocyanins; determination of the total content of phenolic compounds; determination of the total content of flavonoids; determination of antiradical activity; determination of regenerating power; study of antioxidant properties using a model system of linoleic acid. All methods for determining the content of antioxidants were carried out on ethanol extracts. It was established that using of extraction for berries and juice waste products made it possible to determine more precisely the content of the studied indicators. It was also revealed that the highest antioxidant activity of 94.5% - 98.4% was observed in raspberries and their water extract.

Punica granatum L. is one of the species enjoying growing interest due to its complex and unique chemical composition that encompasses the presence of anthocyanins, ellagic acid and ellagitannins, gallic acid and gallotannins, proanthocyanidins, flavanols and lignans. This combination is deemed responsible for a wide range of health-promoting biological activities. This study was focused on the analysis of flavonoids, anthocyanins and phenolic acids in eight pomegranate varieties (Punica granatum) from Macedonia, in two consecutive years. Fruits from each cultivar were washed and manually peeled, and the juice was filtered. NaF (8.5 mg) was added to 100 ml juice as a stabilizer. The samples were centrifuged for 15 min at 3000 rpm and analyzed using an HPLC/DAD/MSn method that was optimized for determination of their polyphenolic fingerprints. The dominant anthocyanin in all pomegranate varieties was cyanidin-3-glucoside followed by cyanidin and delphinidin 3,5-diglucoside. From the results, it can be concluded that the content of anthocyanins was higher in 2016 compared to 2017. But in contrast, the total content of non-colored polyphenols was around 10 times lower in 2016 compared to the amount found in the same samples in 2017.

Flavonoids are valuable polyphenolic compounds that accumulate in plants and have various biological activities. Koenigia Weyrichii (F. Schmidt) T.M. Schust. et Reveal is one of the plants with high flavonoid content in aerial parts. The aim of this work is to compare the total content of polyphenols, flavonoids, the total antioxidant and antiradical activity of ethanol extracts obtained from different parts of the K. Weyrichii plant growing in the Arctic zone of Russia, to compare the efficiency of ultrasonic extraction and maceration, and to determine the optimal extraction conditions. The determination of the total content of polyphenolic components was carried out using the Folin-Chocalteu reagent, the total content of flavonoids - using the complexation reaction with aluminum chloride, the total antioxidant activity - using the phosphomolybdate method, and the free radical scavenging - in the reaction with 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). An increased yield of flavonoids is observed when maceration is used. According to the data on the total content of flavonoids, the optimal conditions for maceration (time and ratio of the components of the water-ethanol mixture) were determined. K. Weyrichii can be considered as a promising source of flavonoids and cultivated in the Arctic for further use.

Micromeria frivaldszkyana is an endemic species found only in Bulgaria. Its essential oil (EO) composition is unknown. This study assessed the EO yield and composition of M. frivaldszkyana as a function of the location and of drying prior to the EO extraction. M. frivaldszkyana was sampled from two natural habitats, Uzana and Shipka in the Balkan Mountains; the EO was extracted via hydrodistillation and analyzed on GC/MS. The plants from the two locations had distinct EO composition. The EO content (in dried material) was 0.18% (Uzana) and 0.26% (Shipka). Monoterpene ketones were the major group of the EO constituents. Also, hydrocarbons predominated in the EO from Shipka, and alcohols predominated in the EO from Uzana. The EO from Uzana had a greater concentration of menthone (56% vs. 17% from Shipka) and neomenthol (7.8% vs. 2.4%). Conversely, the EO from Shipka had greater concentrations of pulegone (50% vs. 20% from Uzana), limonene (10.1% vs. 2.6%), and germacrene D (3.4% vs. 1.1%). Drying prior to the EO extraction altered the concentration of some constituents. This is the first report of M. frivaldszkyana EO yield and composition. The EO showed some similarities with the chemical profile of other Micromeria species, but overall, it has an unique chemical profile and may have distinctive applications.

Greek oregano and common oregano were compared in respect of the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of the corresponding essential oils and hydroethanolic extracts in relation with their chemical profile. The chemical composition of essential oils was determined by GC-MS and GC-FID, while extracts (phenolic acids and flavonoids fractions) were analyzed by HPLC-DAD. Based on given volatiles, the investigated subspecies represented two chemotypes: a carvacrol/γ-terpinene/p-cymene type in the case of Greek oregano and a sabinyl/cymyl type rich in terpinen-4-ol in common oregano. Within non-volatile phenolic compounds, rosmarinic acid appeared to dominate in both subspecies. Lithospermic acid B, chlorogenic acid and isovitexin were present only in Greek oregano extracts. However, the total content of flavonoids was higher in common oregano extracts. The essential oil and extract of Greek oregano revealed visibly stronger antibacterial activity (expressed as MIC and MBC) than common oregano, whereas the antioxidant potential (determined by DPPH, ABTS and FRAP) of these extracts was almost equal for both subspecies. In the case of Origanum plants, the potential application of essential oils and extracts as antiseptic and antioxidant agents in the food industry should be preceded by subspecies identification followed by recognition of their chemotype concerning both terpene and phenolics composition.

The purpose of this study is the chemical investigation of the composition of Tragopogon orientalis volatile constituents (VC) and studying of its biological activity. This article presents the results of research on the study of the chemical composition of species Tragopogon, as well as data of antiradical and cytotoxic activity. To study the dried and crushed aboveground part of the plant (leaves, flowers and stems) was taken. The raw material was collected in the flowering phase, growing in Northern Kazakstan. The VC was isolated from the plant of Tragopogon orientalis by hydrodistillation method on the Clevenger type  apparatus. The chemical composition of the VC was determined by GC/MS. The cytotoxic activity of the VC was determined by the survival rate of sea shrimp Artemia salina. VC of T. orientalis in all studied concentrations (1–10 mg ml-1) exhibit acute lethal toxicity - all larvae die. Antiradical activity was determined by the method of colorimetry of free radicals (DPPH). The experimental results showed that the VC of T. orientalis at all tested concentrations (0.1–1.0 mg ml-1) exhibit low antiradical activity compared with the butylhydroxyanisole standard drug.
